Jinx flinched at her touch. It was something that would have bothered a week ago, before all this craziness started, when she back home on the farm. In..hold..out..in..hold..out. She focused on her breathing, no longer caring if the nurse was in the room or not. All that mattered was this woman, this doctor was near her, and she wasn’t going to hurt her.
She lifted her head and looked at the doctor. Of all the things she could have said to her she simply uttered, “Thank you.” Though her appearance may not have shown it, Jinx felt calmer now. Her powers didn’t feel like a shaky leaf on a tree limb blowing in the breeze. She felt as stable as she could be. The knowledge that the doctor had done something to her brain was still there, and Jinx struggled to not become upset. Upset would be bad at this point. This new doctor was directly in front of her, touching her. There was no doubt what her powers would do to her.
Still breathing deeply, she knew the doctor was right. She could already hear the shuffling feet approaching them fast. They were coming, and if she lost control now, they would shoot to kill. Already they had seen what her powers could do. They wouldn’t wait to see if she would reign them in. Still remaining calm was something she simply could not do. Leaning forward, she rested her forehead against the doctor’s shoulder and began to cry. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean..to kill her. I couldn’t..help it. Don’t let them hurt me. Please,” she pleaded as her body shook with her sobs. “I’ll be..a good girl. I promise.”
