"You can be strong for this. It's probably nothing." She then glanced at Christine. "Roscoe outta arrest YOU. That had to have ABSOLUTELY been the worse ever impersonation in the HISTORY of impersonations. For one thing his accent is southern country not Outback Australian... I mean, yikes, Christine!"

Kara gave a sad smile and pulled away and went with the head nurse just out of earshot. Shortly, she was back in with a long face. "Got good news, bad news and ugly news." One could almost hear the theme to the popular spaghetti western.

Jeffery tried to keep Noel’s attention off Kara as she left the room.
”Hey Tiny, you hear that? It sounds like someone else is almost as bad at accents as you are” he smiled, hoping for a reaction from her. But he didn't get what he was expecting.
”Oh, okay, umm thanks” she somberly nodded as she waited for Kara’s return.

Once she had returned Noel was the first to reply,
”umm ugly, bad than good,” she asked a clear look of worry as the movie reference went over her head.

Kara nodded. "Well... The ugly news is that 50s thing I wanna do won't happen on this floor. There's no place up here it can be done. It'll have to happen in the cafeteria, and only mobile patients can attend... But ALL mobile patients can attend... So I gotta extend the invitation to all floors save floor six ... Or fug-gedaboutit. So I okayed the invitation to all patients. So... The bad news is I was informed on what was asked and because I'm 17 and not 18... Not til New Year's Day... I can't spend the nights with you... Mom can, however. The good news is that if you continue to show improvement... And get through tonight... You can go home tomorrow afternoon, so... Y'know... Keep your nose clean?"

Noel paused for a moment as she listened to the list, the ugly news actually made her feel a little better, as though she was thinking the 50’s show would make her happy it wasn't something she was super worried about. The bad news, however, made her more concerned
”Wait what? I thought I was going to go home today, that's what they said yesterday, I mean if I was going to stay another night I would have wanted you to stay, but I umm.. I” she started to breathe heavily seeming to be starting a panic attack.

”Hey! Tiny! Listen, you spent a lot more time than that in a hospital a lot worse than this one, plus you get all night to get to know your future mother in law” he smirked. This pulled Noel from her freakout into tomato faced embarrassment.

”Oh my goodness! We haven't even had a real first date yet!” she covered her face and shook her head.
”Jeff how could you say that!” she barked laying back onto her pillow hands still over her face.
”Plus it's not that I mind spending time Pat, it's being here another full day, and they did say I would be able to leave today, I heard them.” she argued.

”Well then don't go Bruce Lee on the staff maybe?” he teased leaning toward her.
”Hey, I don't even remember doing that, okay, I mean I just like, okay maybe I did but I, things were wrong and I, I maybe panicked a little and got a little confused, I had just woken up from a bad dream and it was like seamless I swear” she defended.

”Oh? What was the dream about?” He asked to hope to get a little more from her now that she was distracted from her original panic.

”I was, I umm, Don’t remember it fully, but I think it was about the uh, the kidnapping...”

Dr. Brinker was right there with (she hoped) a calming shoulder squeeze, yet letting Noel fall back without hindrance. "Thanks Jeff." She said nodding to him. "Noel... Sweety... That's usually how it goes when things like last night happened. I felt just horrible when I learned what happened when I got here this morning. I've had to cancel my other appointments, and truthfully, the only one I was sweating about missing was Penny's mandatory visit to me from OnePP*"

When she heard the nightmare could have been about the kidnapping, she paled, but didn't turn completely white. "That should have been expected. That's almost always a side effect of this kind of trauma. Either this happens or the brain blocks it from memory as a defensive mechanism. What you can't remember can no longer hurt you." It looked like she was mentioning this to Jeffrey as that's where her attention actually was. She did smile at Noel, "And before you apologize for interrupting my schedule... Ask yourself what's more important: The welfare of a traumatized kidnapping victim that suffered other things at the hands of the perps... Or a strong willed young policewoman who got spooked by an attempted kidnapping and probably needs nothing more than to talk it out?"

*-OnePP is police code for One Police Plaza or Internal Affairs, who would be involved in Penny's mental health after the attempted kidnapping

As she gave Noel a helpful squeeze it did seem to help, though at first, she turned to look who had done it, she reached up and placed her hand over hers. Jeffery had nodded at the thanks, giving a nod back and letting her take over.

Noel turned and looked at Dr.Brinker as she spoke, having an almost lost puppy dog look on her face as she listened. Even though she seemed like she was talking to Jeffery the words helped her as well. She didn't feel like she was crazy for going through what she was, hearing that what she was doing was a natural response and not a relapse of her diagnosed mental illness let her take in a deep sigh of relief.

As Brinker turned back to her again she was about to apologize for interrupting her schedule, but just as she did Brinker seemed to read her mind and beat her to the punch. She paused before answering ”The umm, the victim, but uhh, Maria was their victim for much longer than me, I didn't even spend a day there and she had been there for several, I can't imagine how she is. Plus I had like self-defence training to fall back on, I knew I could defend myself once I got a chance” she replied now more concerned for Maria than herself.
”How is she?”

Just as she asked this there was a man in a suite at the door.
”What perfect timing, I am here to discuss just such a thing, the men you assaulted have hired me to both defend them in court and would like to officially sue you for assault and battery, they have had both been hospitalized for their wounds, and would require compensation” Jeffery turned and looked at the man with an eyebrow raised.
”You can't be serious”

Christine frowned. "They have their nerve when your clients have committed a heinous crime against the bodies of two young ladies, and we have their DNA all over on the inside of both. Both were virgins, and we haven't gotten all tests back... But I'm also willing to assume there's DNA of other victims on them."

"We've got two missing victims that we'd like the whereabouts of." Brinker stated calmly, "Furthermore, if a certain young officer who also was approached, positively identifies your clients as the ones who attempted to grab her... They won't have a legal leg to stand on. Both current victims in this room are actually protected by the Detective you have in front of you. Might I remind you... These two are legitimate victims of your clients. Self defense even works in civil court as well as criminal. Keep THAT in mind if you wish to continue down this path."

When Brinker finished, leaving Christine to continue blocking the way to either victim, she walked over to Jeffrey. Calmly, she whispered, "I STRONGLY suggest you find a lawyer and explain this ugly situation and see if he/she will defend the girls. Especially Noel. And use self defense. Those criminals cannot be allowed to even think they can try this."

Christine smirked. "Here's a fun fact you can take back to your clients... WHEN they are found guilty of the felonies they have against them... They wouldn't be able to collect even IF they could win their civil case... Because they will no longer have a right to it as they'll no longer be civilians but future inmates. Felons at that."

The lawyer rolled his eyes at her as she spoke. ”Tell it to the court, the only defensive wounds found so far are on the older male victim while the younger was struck with violent intent by a branch. However the injuries on this girl we're her own doing as she fled from the scene of her crime, and implied sexual activity was agreed to by both parties according to my clients, any claims otherwise are hearsay” he took out some papers and put them down on a nearby table.
”However I am simply here to deliver the papers, see you in court” he turned and walked away.

Jeffery waited for him to leave before replying.
”Don’t worry, we have a good lawyer already from her case against Steve, which was similar and we won, though he may have been an even harder case as it was only implied attempt at sexual assault, where this seems like it may have been, a lot worse” he said sounding confident.
“They even tried the no defensive wounds on Noel part, and claimed we couldn’t prove her wound wasn’t self inflicted, since the weapon went ‘missing’. I think the jury will take one look at the girls and one look at them and know the truth.”

Brinker nodded. "Good." A pat to the shoulder. She turned to look at Christine. "I'd like a private word with you out of the room, Detective." If one was really paying attention... Brinker did NOT have her counselor face on, but the stern look of a fellow police officer.

Kara practically growled at the papers laying on the table, before walking back over to her chair to sit with Noel. The room was starting to feel tense for those not with a mental issue as an orderly walked in... And decided it best to walk right back out.

Shortly, Brinker was back in, and walked over to the head of the bed chair and sat down. "We're not even going to give them a chance at intimidation tactics. We're going to have a police officer stationed right outside, and they and anyone associated with them, will not be allowed near the girls. If they get to the door... They'll be turned away."

Jeffrey nodded at her acceptance.
”Only issue is we would have to let our father know what is happening, I can't afford thisguy and he doesn't do pro bono.” He added before walking to the door, planning to act as a sort of guard for the moment.

Noel hadn’t really been keeping up with everything, her mind still swimming a little as she looked around at the now tense room. Luckily Kara had sat down beside her before she started to panic. Noel reached over to hold Kara’s hand.
”I umm, I think some of the hospital's drugs are still making my head fuzzy, what's going on?”

When Brinker sat down at the foot of her bed and started to tell everyone about their precautions Noel just looked over to her confused, perhaps she was just pretending to not know what was happening as a defence mechanism?

Brinker noticed what Jeffrey was doing. "That's a temporary fix until the officer Wainwright sends." She noticed Christine talking at length to the nurse's station and all the nurses and orderlies about what just transpired. As Christine left for the elevator and eventually the police station, the PA system donged to life and a security detail was sent to the other room where the men were on a different floor. The ICU was all of the floor right above them... And the room started with a seven! They were indeed pretty messed up... But not in an ICU. Seven nine (and certain numbers in five) were reserved for prisoners. Both, including the younger of the two, were breathing on their own and speaking (complaining about damage, trouble breathing, and NOT being in the ICU). So apparently this had been expected. They would be told in no uncertain terms that they and their lawyer were not to even be on the fourth floor again.

Kara squeezed the hand and seemed to be just as confused as Noel, and she was hearing everything clearly. She even showed her confusion. "Wait. 722? The way that guy was talking... They would both be in the ICU!" She then had another look on her face. "Seventh floor is the prisoners ward. Bad shape without need of ICU!"

And the prisoners in question were NOT being babied, however, their injuries were being tended to just as efficient as everyone else's.

Lenard appeared at the door. "Uh... Ladies... Hate to be a bother with all the commotion... But wouldn't the celebrity need a detail if these girls get one? I mean they find out SHE'S in here, too... Who knows what "friend" may be called. I've had that girl in my home. A real sweetheart. Not counting the pop idol to millions part. She could be snookered into all this."

Leave it to Kara's dad to innocently tense the room farther... Brinker even groaned, "Shit. Didn't think of that. These two girls were top priority." She then finally explained calmly, while petting Noel through her hair why all the commotion and Lenard's question which seemingly came from left field to anyone (like Noel) who was out of the loop.

Jeffery knew he would be a temporary fix, but until someone else was there he would stand guard, his large size would likely scare off any would-be threats.

Noel looked around lost until Brinker finally explained it to her while petting her head, which actually seemed to help calm her as she explained it. Though the situation she found herself in certainly didn't help her nerves, especially since she had to spend another night here, what if friends of the criminals came after her? Try to silence their victims?

”Wait is there a chance they might come for us? Wait you said Pat was going to stay right? Will it be safe for her?” she asked starting to panic again.

Brinker nodded. "That's why the security detail for both of you in this room. Your door will even be shut after visitor's hours, so you and Pat will be safe as long as you stay in the room." This basically meant Pat would have to share the room's bathroom. Detail also meant two armed officers per shift. Brinker continued to pet Noel in an attempt to keep her calm.

She glanced at her phone which chimed with a message. "Let's not worry about that now, as I understand the cafeteria lunch crowd has been cleared out. They're setting up for Kara's concert. She's singing to everyone invited to it." She glanced at Kara. "Number one hits of the 50s? Why'd you pick something so far back?"

Kara just smiled.

Noel seemed to relax a little hearing about how they would be kept safe. She had also seemed to like her head pats.

Noel smiled as well hearing the genre she Had picked.
”Well it is my favourite, but I don't know if that had anything to do with it. Also, I can't believe how brave you are to sing in front of so many people, heh I can't even imagine how you manage that. Though I suppose if I sang as well as you it wouldn't be so bad” she smiled as she looked lovingly at Kara.

It seemed the concert was also a good topic to distract her from all.the negative ones at the moment.
”So are you going to sing with anyone? Or is it like a one-woman show?” She asked looking into Kara’s blue eyes.

Kara shook her head. "Just me, as I didn't know Miss Candy was even here... Besides... She wouldn't be able to sing. I'm sure she'll be up there in the front... And I want you up there on my other side."

Soon enough, it was time to head down. Maria nodded about going down, and they took her down as part of Kara's chosen entourage.

Candy had been given a notebook to write in, and as the college student in her wheelchair was right next to Noel's and Jeffrey. She handed the notebook to Noel with this written on the first page: If you've never seen or heard her sing... You're in for quite a treat. But only if Kara did what I told her and kept practicing. Btw? My ears are fine... My nurse has forbidden me from talking, to rest my tonsils until they can get removed in a few days.

She gave Jeffrey a smile and nod.

Noel smiled, secretly happy it was just Kara up there. She didn't want others singing over her. As they were escorted down Noel had assumed she would end up beside Maria, which she hoped would give her a chance for them to talk a little between or before the songs began. To her surprise, however, she ended up beside the celebrity. She was too nervous to speak to her until she was given the notebook she had written in.
”Oh, heh I have heard her sing a few times, and she mentioned practice before so I think she has, but you are right she really is an amazing singer, very talented and I think that is in large part thanks to you right?” she asked handing the book back.

Meanwhile, Jeffery nodded and returned her smile with a light wave.
”Noel I had no idea you were dating a famous person how did you manage that?” He leaned in and asked her in a whisper.

”Heh, she approached me.” she said seeming really happy with that fact.

”Was that before or after you lost the fight to a bleach bottle?” he asked rubbing her hair.

”Shut It! It was after if you must know, I did this almost immediately after I moved here.” she told him.

”And why you did that is another story I need to hear,” He told her though his usual joking tone was gone.

”Umm, later okay, I just want to enjoy the show, like Mrs. Umm Candy here said, Kara is really good.”

Candy, blushing, waved a hand at her in a pshawimg motion. She then started jotting something down, and handed it back.

Please. She had the talent all along. She just lacked direction. She studied under me as one of my backup and background singers for three straight summers. And... Not married so not a Mrs... Who is the tall drink of water next to you? And is HE married? Candy had a little bit of a smirking "nudge wink" look on her face.

Apparently Candy, who was bi liked Noel's brother

Noel took the note pad again and as she first started to read it had a soft smile on her face, happy to read more about Kara. Then as she read about Jeff she scrunched her nose. She looked at him before back at her with a face that said Really?! She wrote back down on the notepad as he had not yet noticed and didn't want him to overhear.

Eww, that's my youngest older brother and he isn't married and wasn't dating last I heard but haven't really checked in on in months.

Candy nodded, kind of giving a silent chuckle at the expression before reading the explanation. She then pointed to the spot where Kara was standing at the microphone. She thanked everyone for wanting to attend that was mobile enough and explained what she was going to do. Finally she started with the Ronnie Milsap hit.

Close your eyes, baby
Follow my heart
Call on the memories
Here in the dark

We'll let the magic
Take us away
Back to the feelings
We shared when they played

In the still of the night
Hold me darlin', hold me tight, oh
So real, so right
Lost in the fifties tonight

These precious hours
We know can't survive
But love's all that matters
While the past is alive

Now and for always
Til time disappears
We'll hold on to each other
Whenever we hear

In the still of the night
Hold me darlin', hold me tight
So real, so right
Lost in the fifties tonight

Oh so right, say
So real, so right
Oh so real, so right

We've gone back through time now... It's January 7th, 1950. Here's the number one song that week, by Gene Autry.

Now you know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen
Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen
But do you recall...
The most famous reindeer of all?

Kara started swaying and dancing in place as she started.

Rudolph the red nose reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games
Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say

She pointed to Noel, wiggling her finger to come up... Not out to embarrass her, but to act as the recipient of the beckon. The nurse and Brinker both encouraged her, and Candy even nodded with a silent shoo wave of the hands.

"Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won't you guide me sleigh tonight?"

Now with an arm around her shoulder, Kara finished.

Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee
"Rudolph the red nose reindeer
You'll go down history!"

"Everyone, together!" Kara encouraged, getting all to sing the last two lines in unison.

Rudolph the red nose reindeer
You'll go down in his--toe-ree!

"Unfortunately, Rudolph, you only get to stay number one for one week... But oh, what a week, amirite?"

She paused for the applause and a drink of lemonade.

Noel was about to make another comment on her thoughts about her dating her brother when Kara drew her in and she quickly got entranced in the show. During the first song, she couldn't help but tap her foot and hum along quietly to her, she was quiet enough that it was unlikely anyone would hear her. Though as that song drew to a close she wiggled excitedly in her seat as she set up the next song, thinking for a moment as she set the date and time, not knowing what the song would be singing until the first few lyrics. In which she immediately recognized it.

Noel couldn't take her eyes off Kara as she sang and danced, her infatuation was clear for anyone who would look at her. Though as the mid some came along and she was gestured up her face turned red, it was not Kara's intent to embarrass her, but it happened anyway. She most certainly would have just nervously shaken her head no if not for the encouragement of the nurse, Brinker, Candy, and Jeffery, who's Jaw dropped when she actually went up there.

At first, as she sang with Kara the nervousness was clear in her voice, but she started to focus on Kara more and the crowed less and started having fun, though clearly she was not in the same league as Kara was talent-wise. However, her voice would never be heard over Kara and she would end u being more of a back singer for her.

Once the song finished and Kara drank her lemonade, Noel didn't know if she should get off the stage or stay? ow did this work, was she supposed to sing the next one as well? what if she didn't know it? Even the small pause between songs was enough to get her nervous again as she basically froze on stage.

As Kara swallowed, she looked at Noel. "I can't ask you to do this next one. It's tricky... You can go back and have a seat. I might call again, so be ready." She faced the audience. "January 14th was the next number one, and it stayed there until February 11th when the third number one hit of 1950 took place. There's only one set of Andrews Sisters... And I hope to do them justice. She then sang I can Dream, Can't I? with a feel of actually having a touch of the Big Band Era. Candy clapped as Noel would return as Kara crooned the next number one hit.

Candy jotted something down in her notebook and handed it over. You're a bit higher pitched than her. If she hasn't said anything yet, try listening to the Beatles, Air Supply and Cyndi Lauper. Sing with them, even if it's just a little above Cyndi... Okay? You'll get there. Oh... You froze... Keep focussing on whatever you did prior... My guess it was Kara. Ignore the people until you do it a few more times and get used to them. She gave a back pat.

As Kara went into her next song, first stating the date of February 11, 1950, She said, "Nobody say nothing about my bad grammar... I'm just singing the lyrics!" Everyone quickly learned why she had said that.

M
I say M O
M O P
M O P P
Mop
M O P P
Mop mop mop mop

R
I say R A
R A G
R A G G
Rag
R A G G M O P P
Rag Mop

Doo doo doo DAH dee ah dah
Rag Mop
she repeated this three more times before continuing
Doo doo doo DAH dee ah dah
R A G G M O P P
Rag Mop

Candy produced a harmonica and did the musical interlude for Kara... Since that didn't mess with her inflamed tonsils.

Kara was back at it.

A
I say A B
A B C
A B C D
A B C D E
A B C D E F G H

I
and she repeated the rest of the lines leading to the harmonica except for the M, once again misspelling both mop and rag... Because that's how the song went.

Again she went for a drink of lemonade and finally it dawned on the pop artist what Kara was doing!

Noel took a moment but once her mind registered she was to get off the stage and everyone's sight she made her way back to her chair. She took a few deep breaths as Candy wrote on her paper then read it, smiling happily and writing down on it to not interrupt Kara's singing with her talking.

That is the same thing that Kara told me! And yeah, I don't think singing and performing is my thing, as soon I realized where I was, I was so scared that I blanked out a little.

Though her back pat seemed to help Noel calm down a little, though Candy could tell both from the handwriting and how she was sitting now that she was shaken up pretty good, as she was still shaking a little.

A large hand was placed on her head as Jeffery gave her head a rub. He leaned in and whispered something in her ear, in which she shoved him lightly, both of them having a smile on their face. Noel shushing him.

Candy nodded after reading, and looked up as Kara said, "That only stayed number one for one week as well. My guess? The lousy spelling!" She got some chuckles and giggles, before she continued, February 18 and the fourth number one hit of 1950 came along. She proceeded to sing Red Foley's, Chatanoogie Shoe Shine Boy having a rag that she snapped at the appropriate times during it.

Candy handed the notepad over as Kara talked about the fifth number one hit and the date it was number one, starting March 18, before she nodded to a nurse who started playing a jazzy instrumental piano intro that the old timers in attendance would definitely recognize, before singing Teresa Brewer's Music! Music! Music!

Before the song, the new message to Noel was four simple words, Believe in yourself, Noel. this was followed by a hand drawn smiley face emocon.

She then motioned for it back before Noel could respond and began clapping the beat with Kara through the song, after she asked, What was that all about? That whispering and shoving your brother? Candy had no siblings, just her parents who came to visit. So she really had no idea what to make of what she saw.

Kara went on to the sixth number one hit, and as always, gave the date and original artist first. April 15 (she made a crack about it being tax day) and Eileen Barton, before singing, If I Knew You Were Coming, I'd've Baked a Cake Kara wasn't holding the mike like previous, for the last two songs she was leading everyone in clapping the beat.

Noel happily listened and interacted as Kara continued to sing and name off the number one hits. She did intend to write something down before she was asked to give the notepad back, which she did immediately.

When Candy asked her about the interaction with her and her brother. She once again took the paper to write her response.

He was just teasing me about how I used to be really shy and nervous around other people. It wasn't anything important.

While Kara grabbed some more lemonade in between the sixth and seventh number one hits of 1950, Candy further showed she had no siblings as she mouthed the words, Aawww! That's so sweet! looking between the two of them. Then she wrote a seemingly odd question. She knew why Kara was stopping every few songs and drinking lemonade... She wanted to know if Noel did. Do you know why Kara is stopping every few songs to dampen her throat and why it's lemonade? I'll give you a clue, it's an old trick done by singers especially, throughout history at informal gatherings. I have a bottle of water onstage with me at all my concerts but I can't grab a drink as often. Oops, that's two clues. She handed it over, just as Kara mentioned they had only gone forward a few weeks to April 29 and Anton Karas had taken the number one spot from the fun song, she then pulled out her phone and let The Third Man play as she held the phone up to the mic and let the jazzy style song play it was no wonder she hadn't sung it... No words! After she put the phone down, she said, "That song stayed at number one the longest in 1950 up to that point. It will come as no surprise what finally toppled it. Fast forward to July 15, and Nat King Cole."

Mona Lisa
Mona Lisa men have named you
You're so like the lady with
The mystic smile
Is it only cause you're lonely
They have blamed you
For that Mona Lisa strangeness
In your smile.

Do you smile to tempt a lover
Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way
To hide a broken heart?
Many dreams
Have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there
And they die there
Are you warm, are you real
Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely,
Lovely work of art?

(Music interlude)

Do you smile to tempt a lover
Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way
To hide a broken heart?
Many dreams
Have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there
And they die there
Are you warm, are you real
Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely,
Lovely work of art?
Mona Lisa
Mona Lisa!

Kara probably got her largest applause from the older patients yet.

"Thanks... That..." Kara blushed and tried to quiet the clapping. She cleared her throat as the clapping stopped. "That wasn't even the song of the year... This next one was. It took over the number one spot on August 19th. Gordon Jenkins and the Weavers won the year with this hit:

Irene goodnight
Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

Last Saturday night I got married
Me and my wife settled down
Now me and my wife are parted
I'm going to take another stroll downtown

Irene goodnight
Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

Sometimes I live in the country
Sometimes I live in town
Sometimes I take a great notion
To jump into the river and drown

Irene goodnight
Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

Stop rambling, stop your gambling
Stop staying out all night
Go home to your wife and family
Stay there by your fireside bright

Irene goodnight
Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams
Goodnight Irene goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams
Goodnight Irene goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

Almost like clockwork, Kara went for some lemonade and held up three fingers to the nurse, who nodded.
