~~Two weeks later~~
Gabriella had received letter's from both the Queen of Halston with her prized knight Sir Finn and the King of Bhel Garom with Sir Harold were personally coming. Leopold had taken great time to ensure his queen was up to speed with customs and mannerisms required of her for this meeting. M was always near by all things considered. No matter how hard Gabriella had tried, she could never pinpoint the woman. But if a noble woman could find an assassin than they were a bad assassin no? All of the servants were on edge as Leopold waited with his queen for their esteemed guests.
"Now my Queen, there is no need for you to be nervous, you did a stellar job in memorizing so much in such a short amount of time. Your etiquette is beyond superb and you are a quite the queen. You will do fine." Leopold smiled to her with the warmth of a proud father. He was an older man; learned, wise, patient and in his mid 70s. He has assisted the Hughes family for his entire life and he is one of the longest living members of the household who has some recollection with the entire affair as to why Hammerhold and Rothenburg hold such hatred against each other. "I am sure you will remember the Queen of Halston is a woman who has no concept of personal space and considering that she cannot have children of her own. So if she touches your stomach it is all in fair love. Lastly, I am sure you remember the old king from Bhel Garom is an old man of tradition, if you thought breaking through James was tough, you have seen nothing yet." Leopold warned her as he remained stalwart with his queen.
They arrived in what seemed to be a carriage made of am almost wondrous glass. The carriage itself was pulled by what looked like some lovely black horses. Sir Finn stepped out and helped a woman come out of the carriage. She sported rich, smooth, caramel skin and the kind of bust that put any she had seen to shame. She was a tall woman as well, statuesque with black hair that put the night to shame. She wore a lovely white dress with a long slit down which exposed her beautiful leg. She strode over to Gabriella with Finn next to her. Finn who was no small man, was a little shorter than she was. Finn looked to all three of them with a winning smile as he bowed before them all and turned to his queen with a bow and then introduced her.
"Allow me to introduce you Queen of Rothenburg Gabriella Eloise Huges to the Queen of Halston to the South, The Dragon Empress, The Queen of Unmatched Martial Strength, The Sun Goddess, Queen Alizansa Ignasna Solun." Finn had introduced her properly as they had a chance to properly be seen by the queen but he was the definition of a handsome rogue. Long black hair with that same warm skin but athletically toned from what seemed to be years of swimming, a smooth and powerful jaw line and haunting blue eyes. Alizansa walked over and carefully hugged Gabriella as she looked down to her. She looked at her stomach with a deep sense of longing.
"That looks as precious as you do. But look at you, you have the glow of a mother... not that I would know. But all things considered, it is wonderful to invite me. And to see how a woman can truly improve this castle after the men have run it into the ground." Alizanza spoke as she looked around. Halston is from the lush and bright south, it is known for its beaches, fruitful times, beautiful woman but also their occasional dragon attacks. At least according to the old legends. Halston is supported by a vast sea trade and fishing trade and beauiful textiles. Rothenburg and Halston are frequent trading partners.
"Yes, break down what men have spend their lives building." An older man with a cane walked forward. His face looked warn and broken from years of strife, He looked exhausted to even be alive but he still was. His skin was pale and yet his eyes still sharp, his body seemed to be more stubborn than the stone itself. He had a long, white beard and his hair had long since quit. However, even in his advanced age he still looked to be a strong man, if anything the size of his body alluded to the fact that in his younger days he looked much more like Julian in terms of being rather large. Harold had walked out and bowed to everyone involved.
Harold was a gruff, yet handsome man. Aged and experienced. He was a respectful knight who had seen many battles, who wears his heart on his sleeve as he assisted his much older king, who seemed to stubborn to die. Harold still carried his sword and shield and it looked like their carriage was one of functional design and it was pulled by some other beast of burden. Those were most likely oxen. But now Gabby was face to face with royalty from other countries and this little meeting held the lives of so many as allies were important in times of war.
"This is the Iron Back Emperor Sven Kongslang of Bhel Garom. Fourth of his name, seventh of his bloodline, the iron blood, the stone heart king and the guardian against the damned." Bhel Garom was a prosperous ore mining city built into a massive mountain and volcano to the north. It's people were hearty and stout. Built for war and battle and for little else. They are all very practical and have the most defensible position among all the kingdoms and arguably the post powerful army. Except for the supposed demons that live beneath the volcano that wait to come eat the people of Bhel Garom.
And this was Gabby's war.

The journey to Hammerhold was long and quite boring. Not to mention without his lovely wife around, James had no way to release his pent up sexual energy. It made for a rather rough trip. But soon enough he reached the mountainside that held Hammerhold. It went on for miles until at the very top of a mountainside there was a massive keep with high walls and several ominous towers that stood as a testament to defiance. He would have to be defiant of his own loins as even trusting a whore here could prove fatal, no doubt there could be an assassin at every corner of this walled city.
As they reached inside, it already looked as if Hammerhold had prepared for war. There were guards everywhere, all of the stalls were hidden away and James soon enough felt the pressure of being in a foreign land where everyone wanted to murder you. It was quite the harrowing experience as he felt countless eyes of hatred all over him. It was nothing new actually, hate was a common emotion towards him. If anything, he felt more at home here. But these tight city spaces were different, they added more buildings. It seemed the city was expanding and they planned to keep everything hidden within the walls of Hammerhold. Their armor was thicker than before as well, who knew what other things were hidden inside of the houses.
The normally vibrant trade center that kept this castle town alive was set down to a grave silence that made a cemetery seem vibrant. They eventually reached the massive monolith of the theocratic kingdom of Hammerhold, The Unending Spire, a rotund man soon walked out surrounded by a rather vile entourage of religious nutbags all surrounded him. The Round man and James have a very intense stare as they meet in the middle, all of the formalities aside, they shake their hands and only glare into each others eyes with the fury of a tyhpoon meeting with a volcano erupting.
"James, it is good to see you." The large man spoke as he tried to over power him. James only looked up to him with a look of disgust. The man was blind in one eye but he had thick, innocent cherub cheeks and a wholesome yet sinister smile. He was a little taller than James as he looked down to him like the oppressive god he thought he was. James always believed that Hammerhold was always built as a display of human decadence hidden away in piety. He hated the hypocritical of this place. He may have been asshole, but at least he was an honest asshole about it.
"Raphael, I guess it is good to see you as well." James flexed a little strength as they remained in stare down that was colder than steel but more fiery than lava. James knew he had to be careful, his life was truly on the line here. He was always glad he chose to chase down Julian as a child. He brought his rapier with him. He had no doubt that these men were going to die by the end of this journey and he might have a new scar to show for this visit. It might be why his brain decided to give him a beard in his dream. How did that even happen.
"I have a lovely me-"
"I am not hungry Raphael, just show me too my room. I am exhausted from travel." And with that curt meeting, the duel among kings began.
~~~~~
The sex between them came fast as furious, as came their spring-like whirlwind romance. They picked up their official paper work, she soon officially had access to Julian's finances -being a thrifty knight had its benefits- and they spent their evenings together.
It was truly blissful, until that last week. The knight took over and he became understandably distant and militant. He was never once short with Lydia but the warmth she grew to expect cooled. Their intimacy cooled as he came home more and more exhausted from the preparations. And though he never once mentioned it, he was afraid. Who wouldn't be?
He slept in a cold sweat, he was barely able to rest, he woke up in the middle of the night and only held onto Lydia in a desperate attempt to feel her as what felt for the last time. He never stopped telling Lydia how much he loved her at every moment he could, especially as the day for his deployment came closer. He made sure to clear out a room as much as he could have before he left. His eyes spoke of a longing deeper and wider than the sea as he kissed her one last time and that morning...
He was gone. He only left a note with his will and a note of his undying love just incase. The will was freshly written, no doubt taking into account their recent marriage. But he was soon at the front lines.
Rows and rows of men on horseback were prepared as ordered by James. Siege weaponry was prepared and there was something else set by James but that was for a separate plan. The army soon marched forth for Hammerhold for a surprise attack. War was only a spark away.
