Urgh. I discovered the "Don't make compliments to a child because he'll be vain + evil eye" still exists. My parents were told that, though they didn't really keep it. Just read about it again. Someone mitigated it and said, ok, intellectual compliments or compliments about values/behaviour/good things you do are ok, but not about looks because how you look is not a choice. While I'll take any compliment thrown at me, I love those about looks.
I guess this could be "bad advice" too.
