"No. I heard of him, but I never met him," Deirdre lied in between shooting the monsters that grew in size and number and threatened to overwhelm them. "And as for your offer, I prefer to work alone. I mean, I'm grateful to Deirdre Division for doing everything they can to protect innocent people and deter crime in their neighborhood without getting the corrupt police involved, even if they have to kill people in self-defense. However, I am not affiliated with, nor do I know anyone in their ranks, and I prefer it that way. I think the people who see me on the streets think so too, because they could become me if only they stood up for what's right."
"I heard that, bitch!" one of the Resort Security officers yelled. "Blah, blah, blah. All you do is talk and send people to the hospital with impunity while people who are too lazy to better themselves cheer because they need easy saviors and scapegoats. You think we're robotic stormtroopers, who have it so easy, who don't feel every bullet we have to fire, or hear everyone who cries for mercy before we throw them into hard labor in our dreams, when we know to disobey even the slightest order means ruin for us and our families?! You try being one of us for a day, making the split-second decisions we do every day, and then get back up on your high horse, you armchair quarterback snowflake!"
A giant mutant bat dropped down from the ceiling, ending his counterargument with its teeth.
"Whoa! That one's new!" one of the Deirdre Division girls yelled as she shot at it, and the bullets bounced off its armor ineffectually. Then an alligator the size of a tank, who could probably only be killed by one, burst through a wall and ate her too.
"Enough talking! Shooting these big guys clearly won't work. Just run, everyone!" Deirdre screamed. That, she and Erika both knew how to do as they both parkoured on the desiccated walls of the underground.
"Get back to the security elevator! It's the only way out of here," Jane said as the monsters fought each other over the human scraps, buying everyone else a little bit more time while the IBRS led them there.
