Yukimura nodded once more, then slowly headed out the door, closing it slowly behind him. He walked outside in a haze, unable to articulate his thoughts.
"Dana? What's up? Is Aki ok?" Sasuke asked, trying to stand. Mitsunari seemed very indifferent and emotionless as he stood by the house, arms hiding in his sleeves.
He stopped a few steps outside the house, staring blankly ahead of him. “Akihime… was pregnant.” He said hoarsely, feeling his eyes burn with tears, but he couldn’t do anything but stand there.
"Wh...What...?" Sasuke couldn't believe his ears, "Wh-What do you mean...was...?"
"She had a miscarriage." Mitsunari stated coldly, "Amaya's poison caused her body to reject the child."
"Shut up!! There's no way to know it was Amaya's doing!!" Sasuke snapped at him. Mitsunari glared at him.
"How else would it have happened? Akihime is completely healthy."
Yukimura clenched his fists, turning his head away from the two fighting Hashira- how was he supposed to tell Akihime? How was he going to admit to her that he had failed to protect their unborn child?
After a while, the doctor came out, "She is sleeping comfortably now. I left some medicine for her to take and she should be well again in a few days."
Yukimura numbly thanked the doctor, giving him what money he had to pay him for his services; should he tell her? Would she already know? What would they do after?
After the doctor made his way back when the sun started to rise, Mitsunari moved briskly into the house. Akihime was asleep, pale and clammy, but didn't stir when Mitsunari sat beside her.
She didn't come around until the sun was fully in the sky. She opened her eyes slowly and looked at Mitsunari before her head turned to Yukimura, "You look like you're attending my funeral..." She said teasingly, voice weak.
Yukimura’s existing frown grew heavier at her words, still not knowing how to break the news to Akihime. “Akihime.. We think that the poison Amaya afflicted you with..”
Her brows furrowed gently, confused why his voice faltered, "The poison...?" She tried to urge him to continue.
"You miscarried." Mitsunari stated flatly. Akihime's face paled more than it already had.
"M...Mis...?"
"Yukimura...n-no, don't blame yourself...i-it was my fault..."
"Obviously." Mitsunari scolded her, and his tone made shame burn her face, "If you hadn't tried protecting Amaya, you wouldn't be here, and you would still have a child." And Shouta wouldn't be dead, he wanted to add, but bit his tongue.
Yukimura hadn’t even realized he had launched over Akihime and onto Mitsunari until he was on top of the other slayer, slamming his fist hard into the others face as he held him down by the throat. Tears poured down his face, which was flushed red with grief. “What was she supposed to do?! How were any of us supposed to know?! How can you speak so brazenly when you’ve also lost in this tragedy!!”
Yukimura got another punch in before Mitsunari slammed his palm into Yukimura's jaw, "Do not speak as if you know my pain, Sanada!! If she had done her duty, your bastard wouldn't have aborted!!"
"S-Stop! Stop, please!" Akihime panicked, pushing herself up.
“And you act as if duty would’ve saved Shouta’s life!!” Yukimura took the blow, tightening his grip on Mitsunari as he punched him again. “That we wouldn’t have lost anyone at all had we all done what we’re supposed too!!”
"Take Shouta's name out of your mouth, you rat!!"
"What the fuck is happening?!" Sasuke had come in once he heard the screaming, grabbing Yukimura and hauling him off of Mitsunari, "Dana, this won't help anybody!!"
Yukimura tried to give Mitsunari one last punch, but failed to, missing him by a hair as Sasuke pulled him off of him. “And how will blaming one another for death fix anything?!”
"She knew Amaya was a demon when she and Sasuke arrived! If she hadn't been so sentimental and childish, the baby would live!! Shouta wouldn't have...!!" His voice caught as tears poured down his face, "Date wouldn't have bothered to appear if Amaya had already died! One life for the many, you know this!!"
"Pointing fucking fingers won't bring back what is lost! Shouta knew the dangers! He wouldn't have joined otherwise!" Sasuke snapped.
“There’s no point in arguing all this.” Yukimura wiped his tears away angrily, vision still blurry. “We can’t bring anyone back, and we can’t change that Date showed up.”
A soft hiccup sounded behind them, Akihime clenching the blanket tight as she sobbed.
"Gomenasai...!! Gomenasai...!! It's all my fault...! Shouta-kun...!! My baby...!! If only I was a stronger Pillar...!! Motonari wouldn't have tried turning me...Ama wouldn't have poisoned me...!! I'm not fit to be a Slayer...!!"
"Aki..." Sasuke frowned heavily, his heart heavier now than it was the night before.
Yukimura shrugged off Sasuke, straighting out himself and taking a breath before moving over to Akihime. He didn’t know what else to do, putting his hand over hers, letting her cry in silence.
As this was happening, when Masamune left with Amaya and they were away from the Slayers, Masamune nearly dropped to his knees, gasping loudly.
"Wh-What did you do to me...?"
