Onyx Landing is a place of outcasts. Those who don't fit in polite society. They sought freedom, or riches, or to escape the ever-encroaching specter of their pasts. On the edge of civilization, just outside of the reach of the US or Mexico, the people of Onyx landing are without loyalties or allegiance. Some may see that as standoffish and aloof, but the folks of Onyx Landing see themselves as fiercely independent.

But that sort of lonely existence won't last in the long run. Without someone to watch your back, you'll end up face down in a ditch, with a bullet int he back fo the head and robbed of all your earthly riches. The gangs have already figured it out. Bout time the travelers in the region figure it out for themselves.

Meanwhile, out at the mine in Dead Reach Mountain, they dug up something up. Something ancient, and unspeakable. Something that can no longer be confined within the mountain. Closing up the mines won't keep this presence at bay.

Anyhow, this is just an interest check for something in this sort of setting, and I am particularly open to suggestions and collaboration. Looking for 4-6 players interesting in contributing and progressing the story, and not just leaving it up to me.

Period: Around 1870
Location: Somewhere in the Nevada/Utah/Arizona Area. Near a large mountain with a recently closed mining operation.
Magic: Yes, but underpowered and rare to start off with.
Steam Technology: Yes, but primitive and limited.
Supernatural: Yep! I am thinking things like zombies, werewolves, vampires are all possible. The first thing I want the characters to confront and deal with in the game is this entity that's been awakened in the cursed mine. That said, typical wild west fare, like bounties, outlaw gangs, train robberies and so on, are also on the table.

Current Players: 7/8

I was thinking of a prostitute, perhaps she could work in your character’s brothel. She’ll be new in town, I was thinking. She could also help with simple medical procedures, and women’s issues....drawing from her experience, which isn’t much, but will be sufficient in some situations. I’m still working on her a bit. It will depend on who else joins, and what character they will write.

Sounds great, looking forward to her joining us.

Count me as interested! I need to develop my character idea a bit more, but I was thinking either a former or current Pony Express rider (if we don’t mind playing with history a little bit and having the Pony Express around a little longer than it actually existed), or a ranch hand who passes herself off as a young man to get the kind of wrangler work she loves to do.

History is useful so long as it informs the narrative, and minors details like that shouldn't get in the way of a good character. And I think a cross dressing cowgirl could fit in well with the group!

Great! I'll run with the Pony Express idea then and work on fleshing out the character idea a bit more over the weekend. Looking forward to writing in this world!

I did the character posting thing! Happy to take feedback on the character idea and adjust it as needed to best fit with the group, and looking forward to the story.

Eli looks great, and if you are ready, feel free to respond to the game thread. @Cozette feel free to make your character and join us when you are ready.

Tom: Ah sore am likin’ this here male ta female ratio in this here thread.

so this is more red dead redemption but with supernatural and magic? would you accept someone who is not in the group at first but will be? I am thinking she can be a healer of sorts prefering bows with drugs rather than bullets and things like that?

@xanaphia can correct me if necessary, but the feel at the beginning is a western with some weird shit going on. But then it escalates, at a pace to be jointly determined by everyone, as the Thing In The Mine (who I’ve nicknamed Satsuysena for reasons) begins to impact the town more and more.

So, Red Dead Redemption with subtle horror magic to start with, and maybe Deadlands at the end. Unless, y’know, I got the intent wrong.

Corsair captured the essence of what I am going for here. And the setting is conducive to new players at any point, considering the nomadic standard of the west, especially with the expansions of the railroads. Basically, join at any point. (If we get to 8 active players, I might not accept new players, just so it doesn't get overwhelming. But I doubt that will be a real problem.)

Your character concept sounds great, and I look forward to you adding your character to the roster.

(Oh, and @TheCorsair , I see what you did there.)

I also may have recruited a friend to come rp with us, but it'll be 24 hours before he's able to post here :)

So I am thinking about trying to run this game one more time. It was partially my fault it died last time, since I moved and lacked internet for a few weeks, and the momentum died. Old players are more than welcome to rejoin, and of course new players are more than welcome!

I wouldnt mind a darkest dungeon but in the old west setting.

Could we be some of the supernatural creatures?
