Minnesotans and Canadians sound a lot alike. I've also noticed that Canadians tend be more polite than a lot of Americans outside of that part of the Midwest so it's easy to mistake one for the other.

I do that all the time in Chicago. I think it's my attitude about it, like it's perfectly normal for me to do that, and don't think anything of it. Folks seem to just go with it, for some reason.
