He heard her banging on the bedroom door and calling his name and the fear he felt spiked harder. Someone was in there with her. He could feel them, knew they had breeched his perimeter defenses with the magical assault that had knocked him on his butt. He reached the door, calling for her, and tried to open it but it was stuck fast, the metal apparently fusing as a result of the energy that burst through the house. He cursed, then did the only thing left to him, teleporting into the far side of the room. The minute he reappeared, his eyes swept the room. He saw Susan, her back against the bedroom door, a towel wrapped around her body. Her hair was in disarray and her eyes were wide with fear as she faced the being in front of her. Alexanâs eyes swept over him next and he swore softly, recognizing him as level 2 Demon. He had no time to think, simply reacting, and with a raise of his hand, he sent a bolt of lightning streaking across the room, slamming it into the side of the demon. The bolt struck him with far greater force than Alexan had expected, his power seeming to be heightened in that moment, and the level 2 cried out, staggering sideways before crumbling to his knees. Alexan moved swiftly to Susanâs side, grabbing her arm lightly and pulling her behind him as he faced the demon on the floor. It was clear that his bolt had struck a terminal blow; he could feel the demonâs magic draining off into the house defenses slowly, but he didnât ease his guard. The demon raised his head and stared at Alexan, his eyes brightening to orange flames. âWell done, level 3â it said, its voice like crushed stones. âBut more will be coming.â Then it collapsed, face forward onto the floor. Alexan stared at it for a second, trying to figure out how heâd felled him in one blow, when he felt it. His energy was humming at a higher rate than normal. He looked inward and saw the blue and red energy mixing together, virtually vibrating, and he knew. Theyâd done it together. Turning to Susan, he grabbed her into a tight hug. âAre you ok?â he murmured, his breath on her ear. âPlease tell me youâre ok.â
