Adrianna Detroit awoke that morning not to the blaring sound of her alarm, but to the sound of someone banging on her dorm room door. She groaned and got out of bed slowly, slipping on a fluffy pink robe as she did. She opened the door, looking weary, only to be greeted by the smirking face of her ex, Adrian. She seemed to immediately awaken and she frowned at him and said "What do you want?" she said in a cold voice.

His smirk only seemed to widen as he replied. "Is that the way you greet an old friend?" he said in his charming voice, one that had not so long ago, had been one of the ways he had broken through her hard shell. Now her shell was back, and stronger than ever before.

"Youâ??re no friend of mine" she said glaring at him and moved to close the door. He stopped it with his arm and said "Your right, we were much more then friends, Adrianna" he said grinning at her.

"Leave, Now" she said coldly. He pulled away and seemed to chuckle. "For now, see you in class" he said and walked away from her dorm. She watched him leave and closed the door, locking it. She turned and leaned back against the door and sank to the ground. The cold front she put on was how she protected herself from him. She was broken inside. Using his charm, wit and good looks he had clawed his way inside her heart, and when she had thought she had spat him back out again, he was trying to claw his was back in. She could feel the tears welling in her eyes but she pushed them back, wiping her eyes with her hands and walked into the bathroom and washed her face. From inside her room she could hear the sound of her alarm. Well at least she had not lost to much sleep.

Back inside the room, her roommate was awaking. Her name was Elise, and one of the kindest people she had ever met. At first she had refused to tell her anything about herself. Adrianna had decided to never put her trust in another ever again. The walls that Adrian had broken down, she had built back up, stronger than ever. Her studies were a distraction, and she achieved top grades in every class, except for one, politics. It had never been her strongest subject, but with Adrian in the same room, tormenting her in their lectures, it had only reflected badly on her performance.

Elise got up and walked into the bathroom. She looked at Adrianna and her face shifted into a look of worry. "Adrianna, have you been crying?"

She looked at her and said "No, I just got something in my eye, I was trying to rinse it out" she said. A believable lie, since she was a medical student. "I'm going to get ready for class" she said walking past her and to her wardrobe. She got dressed in the red skirt and top that was uniform for all female students at Starfleet academy. She pulled her hair back into a simple loose pony tail, her bangs hanging around her face and said "I'll see you at breakfast Elise" she said walking out of the room.

In about ten minutes she had already made her way over to the mess hall. There she sat alone, untill Elise joined her and they both began to eat together. Elise knew not to ask questions about what was upsetting Adrianna, but it did not make her any less worried. After a meal in silence, Elise spoke and said "You know Adrianna, you can tell me whatâ??s wrong...I might even be able to help you" she said softly. Adrianna looked at her, and then seemed to look past her and around her at their surroundings. The people here seemed so happy. They chatted with one another, laughed, joked, they wanted to be here. This place was supposed to be her escape, but it seemed that even Starfleet could not keep Adrian away from her. She looked down at her watched and stood up. "I have to get to class" she said and walked back to their dorm to pick up her laptop and walked to the lecture hall and sat down.

Her first class of the day was a medical subject, for which she was thankful for. Lucky enough for her, Adrian had been grouped in a different class. She prayed he would not find a way into her own. She remembered that today a new lecturer would be coming to teach them. His name was Doctor McCoy, Chief of medical staff on the enterprise. Any student would have felt honoured to have him to teach them; perhaps if she was her old self, Adrianna would have shared that sentiment.

The invite to teach at the academy had been highly flattering for Dr. Jim 'Bones' McCoy. The chance to teach was one he loved dearly and he had accepted the honour with willingness. When he heard the boys challenging girls around the academy to go on dates or play pranks or any of a number of choices he was a little disgusted by it. As a boy he himself had been very loyal to the women he chose to date and he hated the fact that now boys thought cheating was a good option.

Lately he had been struggling to understand why men were now such cheats. Of course he had been working on a starship and was loyal to both his captain and his place within the community on his ship. He had been wandering the corridors for a long time before he entered the classroom, aware of the hush as he settled to teaching, finding that his voice was stronger than he usually let it be. As he was teaching he was aware of a boy sneaking into the lecture and continued despite it, watching the boy move closer to the girl he had been about to ask a question, he had changed the person he questioned but his gaze remained on the boy. It was clear to him that this boy was bothering the girl, the young woman, and he didn't like it.

His question had been answered clearly and he turned his attention to the girl now, knowing he was making the right choice.

"Alright, now let's see just how much you know about healing a wounded eye."

He glanced down at his notes before calling up the holographic eye, an eye infected by a seed in the corner affecting the cornea.

"What's wrong with this eye, and how would you fix it?"

Adrianna had not noticed Adrian enter the room. Perhaps it was a good thing; otherwise she would have choked when asked a question. She paused for a moment, looking at the eye, examining, coming to a conclusion, then finding a solution. She seemed to smile a little. Class was the only time she felt the least bit happy. She spoke confidently and said "The eye is infected, a suitable remedy would be an eye wash" she said. She wondered what the Dr McCoy would say to that. She was confident she had said the right answer. "One such wash could be a dilute boric acid which cleanses the eye" she said.

Adrianna was feeling pretty pleased with herself before she heard a very silent whisper from behind her, one that only she could hear. "Well done Adrianna" whispered Adrian. If the Doctor had been watching, he would have seen an expression of discomfort and perhaps fear flash across her face for a second, before it was replaced with her previous expression.

"Nicely done."

McCoy could see the girl's discomfort and spoke quickly.

"Would you like to come down and demonstrate what would happen if we used an eye-wash?"

The offer was mainly to get the girl down to where he was and well away from the boy who seemed to be cause of it all. He had never liked boys who picked on girls and when he looked the boy over he found himself taking an intense dislike to the boy. His anger must have shown in his tone and he swallowed twice to get a control over himself again, looking back at the girl and speaking softly.

"What's your name lass?"

Adrianna was happy she got the doctors approval, but having Adrian breathing down her neck was un settling. When the offer to demonstrate to the class was presented and quickly got up and walked down to the front. He asked for her name and she responded "Adrianna Detriot, Sir" she said softly.

She turned to the eye and began to punch a few buttons into the console, the hologram now showing how the eye wash could be used to remove the infection. She looked at McCoy and and once more waited for his approval.

Bones, Leonard as his mother had called him smiled warmly at the girl. She was clearly the smartest in the class and one of the bravest. "Good work Miss Detroit." He knew the class was due to leave soon and found himself wanting to see the girl was safe. "Top marks." As the bell rang to let the class leave he gently pulled the girl to one side, speaking softly.

"Is that boy bothering you?"

((You know his first name is Lenord, not Jim ))

Adrianna nodded when he told him his name, but she already knew it. She was pleased when he said she had recived top marks. "Thank you sir" she said, before walking back to her seat till the end of the lesson. She was a little curious as to why he was pulling her aside and she looked at him when he spoke. She faked a smile and said "What boy sir...No ones bothering me" she said. She smiled and said "Excuse me sir, I have to get to my next class" she said and turned leaving the room. The second she walked out her smile faded and she walked swiftly down the hall.

"Whats the hurry Adrianna?" cooed Adrians voice from behind her. "Go away!" she said turning a sharp corner and making her way over to her history lesson.

((Dangit, that's what happens when I type late at night, I'll switch it in a moment, hope you don't mind me fast forwarding?))

As he watched her leave he felt a hint of worry, she seemed worried and he couldn't help but hope she would make it to the end of classes that day. His attention returned to his next lecture and he watched as the students enter his mind went back to Adrianna, he'd have to ask around later. His next lecture was slow and he was glad once he finished it. As he waited for his transport back to the ship he found himself worried about the girl. She had seemed bugged by the boy and yet she hadn't complained. She had enough good qualities that he was glad she was brave enough to stay at the academy despite the boy.

When he had returned to work he was determined to apply for a second medic on board. He had been forced to leave the crew in the care of a nurse and she had clearly done her best but the medical area was still full of complaining patients. He knew there was only a few more months before he could request a fresh medical student and he knew exactly who that would be. Still he had to keep working until then.

After another few weeks he had been pleased to see it was nearly the graduation for the academy. He had been quick to send in his request for a new medical student. He had made a point to ask for a female medical student, knowing that he could ask for the girl by name but deciding to see if chance was on his side. If it was he would be very happy indeed and if not then he could request a switch with the student he did get. There were only three females in the class he had taken and the selection had been clear for him. He just hoped it was as clear for the academy when they saw his request.

((its all cool dude))

Adrianna didn't change very much over the coming months. She remained the same as usual, keeping to herself. Elise did manage to get her to open up a little but not much. Adrian seemed to be hell bent on making her life miserable, more so then he already had done. He seemed to always be watching her from afar, or just right up in her face. She only take guesses at the sick thoughts that went through his head.

A week before graduation, she was summoned to the Deanâ??s office. There she was notified of her selection to serve on the star ship enterprise, along with Dr Leonard McCoy. She was a little surprised by this. She may have been the top student in her medical class, but she had not expected placement on a star ship so soon. She thought she would have years of work ahead of her before that ever happened. She felt a feeling of victory inside her. Adrian would not be able to follow her onto the enterprise, unless by some miracle, he did.

"You are our top student Adrianna, do us proud" the dean said. She nodded and graciously thanked them before turning to leave. She had a glow about her, for the first time, she looked, well even if it was just a little, genuinely happy. She walked back to her room where she informed Elise and they both waited for the day of graduation.

Graduation came and went, and every student at the academy was assigned a place in Starfleet. As she was packing her things, Elise looked at her. She then took a breath and said "We have been assigned to the same ship; I'm to be a junior engineer. I'm glad that I'll get to be with you a little longer...I know there a lot of things I don't know about you, but, I consider you a friend Adrianna, and I hope that one day you'll be able to tell me all of the things you have locked away inside you". Adrianna was a little surprised at this. She looked down a little and said "Maybe".

The next morning Adrianna got on her transport, along with Elise which would take them to the dock, which the Enterprise was currently docked at. They got off the transport and were escorted aboard. They were shown their living quarters. Later they were to meet their new captain and those they would be working with.

((Fixed it anyway, cause elsewise it'll bug me.))

Bones had been working hard on the latest rash of problems, barely seeming to notice the incoming academy group. He knew he had a new staff member coming but he didn't know who it would be and hoped it was at least someone smart. He could use the company, especially if the group coming aboard caught the new virus that seemed to be affecting people. Once he had finished working he had moved to change into his dress uniform and headed towards the meeting place they had agreed on. He was a little wary of these situations and he knew why, he was never quite sure where he stood in those situations.

His arrival was the last of the major staff members and he paused to look around, noting that James Kirk seemed to be making a point of bugging Spock as best he could. The idea was of no real surprise to him, Kirk and Spock were often like cat and dog, arguing but eventually settling on an agreement. Uhura seemed to be expecting someone she knew and seemed far more relaxed than the majority of the crew. It had taken only moments for the buzz to spread. He had smirked when he noticed James Kirk pulling himself upright. Clearly he had a new bridge crewman and was looking forward to it. Security was tight as they waited and he smiled a little, amused by the calm and unease that several of the crew.

As the doors opened he had smiled and moved to welcome the group, noting that the three women in the group had drawn him to a stop. Clearly he was unsure but Bones had the guts to make his moves anyway. He had smiled to see the young brunette he had welcomed into his class who had shown herself to be the smartest of the group.

"Welcome aboard... come in and enjoy yourselves, tomorrow you'll be starting work."

Elise was a little bit surprised when she saw a familiar face. When the Dean had told her that she had been requested, she didn't know by whom. She must have made and impression on him, after all, he had only taught them for a few lessons, but she did feel realived that she knew atleast one person here, aside form the captain. His reputation preceeded him.

Elise looked at him after he had spoke and said "Thank you sir" she said. Elise smiled, she seemed more interested in the ships construction and fucntions. No wonder she was an Engineer.

((bleh, brain fart)

((No worries, I'm sure I'll get one or two eventually))

As Elise and the group entered Bones had found himself smiling. "Your quite welcome." He had spotted the girl's new colours and smiled. "I see we have an engineer." He had turned his attention from Elise to Adrianna and spoken softly. "You must be my new medic." He smiled warmly and offered the girls an arm each.

"Would you like a tour?"

The offer was quiet and he smiled as the two seemed to hesitate.

"I don't bite you know."

His voice was softly spoken and he was calm, relaxed and happy to see that the new members of the crew were mingling successfully. It seemed the new bridge crewmember had already made an impression on Kirk and he smiled, almost to himself as he spoke.

"It might be an idea to get away before the flirting starts to get louder."

Elise and Adrianna did hesitate when he offered them a tour. Adrianna looked at Elise. Eventually Elise cracked a smile and they took an arm each and Elise that "Thank you". She had the gleam in her eye which soon meant she would be asking the poor doctor about every detail about the ship, when it was comissioned, how quickly it could get to warp, what its weapons were like. Adrianna sighed and she soon began.

Adrianna stopped her and said "Elise....he's a doctor, you can ask the chief engineer later" she said. Elise seemed to pout a little as her thirst for knowledge was left unquenched.

Bones had barely hidden his smile as he released Elise's arm to use his combadge, effectively calling the chief engineer to join them. "I'm sure the chief engineer will be happy to answer all you're questions." He smiled slightly at the girl then turned his attention to Adrianna. "Shall we continue and let the engineering fans meet up?"

((blah... sorry, I got stuck))

((its okay))

Elise looked at him and said "Really, WOW! I really get to meet then man who invented the transwarp theory???!" she said with eyes wide. Adrianna sighed and Elise spoke again. "Adrianna, youâ??re so lucky to have such a nice guy to work under" she said. Adrianna gave her a look and said "He has a name Elise, he's not just some guy". Elise smiled and said "Oh stop being such a stiff Adrianna, you can go on with "Dr Lenard McCoy" she said exaggerating his name to prove a point. "I'll wait here" she said grinning.

Adrianna sighed and said "I suppose, Call me when you not acting like a crazy science lady" she said.

McCoy had smiled slightly as he lead Adrianna away, his touch light on her arm as he did so. He had taken his time to lead her away down the hall, staying silent until they were further down the hall and had to turn off. "Let's see the bridge first..." He suggested softly, knowing that that was the most impressive part of the ship and wanting to impress her.

He had lead her up to the bridge and shown her around. After they had taken in engineering and the many other areas of the ship, all except one. The place she'd be working in. Sickbay. He had left it to last wanting to be able to spend plenty of time answering any of her questions about it.

"So, this is the sickbay."

He sounded proud as he lead her in, pausing to code his personal time-keeper, noting the time that had passed.

Adrianna followed him through the hallways of the ship, looking around as they moved. The first place he showed her was the bridge and well, if he wanted to impresses her, he had. She looked around for a few minutes before they moved on to other parts, till finally they came to the one she would be spending most of her time in.

She looked around the sickbay. It had world class facilities. Even the academy did not have the newest equipment, that was reserved for starfleet itself she supposed. It looked like she had been correct. She looked back at him and said "This is nothing like what we had at the academy" she said

"Yeah, the academy gets old stuff." McCoy sighed softly, speaking with warmth. "You did pretty well however, despite the lack of new equipment, all this means is that the new stuff is going to be a lot easier for you." He was smiling as he moved to tidy up the slack that had been left behind before, pausing to look over at Adrianna before adding. "For all of us really." He was smiling as he added the words, seeming to enjoy watching the way she looked around the sickbay.

Adrianna looked back at him and said "We made do with what we had" she said. She looked back at him before looking back around and said "Are there any patients here, now?" she asked him. She couldn't see anyone here right now, and being unfamiliar with this particular sickbay, she did not know where they patients stayed. She seemed to crack a small smile. It seemed that being far away from Adrian, even if it was only for a few hours, was doing the world of good for her. Without him around to constantly remind her of the past, no he didn't just remind her of it, he rubbed her face in it, was allowing her to be able to move on, albeit slowly.

"No." He paused before speaking again. "They were all cleared out about an hour ago." He paused again then smiled vaguely and shrugged, speaking mildly. "Of course we may have an influx of crew at any time." He wasn't that surprised by it actually, he fully expected it by now. His words were soft as she smiled. "I'm sure you can handle whatever comes in." He seemed a little pleased and proud of her, almost as if she was his wife or someone related to her. He couldn't help it. She struck him as smart and he had no doubts about her being the right girl to join them.

Elise nodded. Well she was a little glas that she wouldn't be thrust into work on her first day here. His vouch of confidence for her did make her feel a little better. "Thanks for the support" she said softly. She walked around for a moment, just familiarising her self with the palce before she looked abck at him and said '"So what happens now? Has the enterprise been assigned a mission?" she asked him.

"We have a day of rest then we're off." McCoy couldn't help but smile. "I think they want to be sure we match up right before we go. Some of us may want out and some of your friends may find themselves wanting to leave which is why we always get a day to see how people settle." His explination was soft and he smiled across at her. "Don't you dare go quitting on me." His words were softly playful and he turned his attention back to the screen in front of him, calling up staff records. "Speaking of which... we'd best get back to the party."

Adrianna looked at him and nodded and said "I see" when he explained the days break they had. She looked at him and said "Don't worry sir, I think I'll be here to stay" she said. She nodded in agreement when he said that they should get back to the party. She made her way to the door and said "Lets go, lead the way" she said, still unfamiliar with the ships layout.

He had moved quickly to join her at the door, offering her his arm again before leading her back, smiling at the sound of Elise and the chief engineer talking as he entered the room, clearly Elise and the engineer were getting on just as much as he was with Adrianna. The two had walked for a while before the two entered the party again, Bones still trying not to leave her side, not wanting to. Something about the girl was slowly drawing him to her but he does what he can to hide it, not wanting to push. He'd let their relationship grow as it happened.

"I hope you enjoy it here."

Adrianna smiled and it seemed the party was getting in full swing. She knew to enjoy this opportunity as she doubted they would have many chances to let loose after today. Elise was having a ball of a time, as she and scotty seemed to be enagaged in a coversation only the two of them could understand. Adrianna looked at bones and said "I hope so to" she said. She could not help but feel a little awkward. She had not partied in such a long time. She looked around the room, observing the rest of the crew. After a few minutes the captain walked over to her and looked at McCoy and said "So bones, do you think your new doctor can handle the pressure". Adrianna seemed to furrow her brow. How dare he doubt her! His words only left her wanting to prrove her self. Jim chuckled and said "Relax, i was only kidding, I'm sure you'll serve our crew well' he said grinning at her.

"Well if you wanted my attention you got it....sir" she added on at the end, paining her to say it. The man wasn't even that much older then her and she was already working under him. She wondered if that said more about him then it did her.
