Chapter 8
Riddick and Logan stalked through the corridors taking care to avoid any Necros that may have been wandering the basilica. Riddick just didn’t want to deal with anything wearing black leather at the moment. He was too pissed off at the Necro bastard that tried to rape the only female alive he trusted. Funny. He never thought he’d find himself thinking
that way so soon, especially about a merc.
Suddenly, Riddick came to a halt. He turned around to look over his shoulder and his silver-shined eyes instantly locked onto Logan’s brown. He saw her muscles tense and her breath catch in her throat. Was she trembling? Could she still be that shaken up over what had happened with that Necro? The bastard would certainly pay so long as he still lived and breathed and so long as he himself was the one who could deliver the payment. He then motioned for her to continue following and he finally led her back to her room.
*+*+*
“You okay?” Riddick asked.
Logan just looked up at him. “Yeah, I’m fine. How’d you get in there anyway?” She asked trying to change the subject. She then clasped her hands to hide the fact that they were still shaking.
Goddammit!
“I have my methods and that’s how they’ll stay. Mine.”
Logan looked down at her feet. She felt ashamed, but there was a small urge she felt deep inside her core nagging at her to defend herself. “I would’ve had it under control in a few more minutes, you know.”
“Sure you would’ve.” His voice was dripping with sarcasm and that cut the merc girl right to the bone.
Riddick suddenly took a hold of her hands and inspected them.
“Stop that, I’m fine.” She could feel those tears prickling the backs of her eyes, but she wasn’t about to give in so easily. Not yet. Not ever. Not with
this man.
“Then why are you shaking? I can smell your fear, Eve.”
“I’m fine. I can handle myself. Always have.” Why she felt so uneasy about herself and her work with this man around was more than upsetting. Before that fateful day on Helion Prime, she had been one of the best female mercs in the galaxy.
Riddick just smirked. “That’s just like you, princess. Trying to act tough. I can see the woman underneath that exterior.” His gaze was intense.
“So what? What do you care?” Her words were sharp. Sharper than she had intended. But she didn’t like being reminded of what she longed for yet knew she could never have.
“Never said I did.” The Furyan was still holding onto her hands. “Just making an observation.” He breathed in her scent.
“Well, I’d rather you didn’t.” She knew her eyes were wet, but she hoped that would go either unnoticed or unspoken about. At least they weren’t spilling out all over her face. That was the last thing she needed. She was sick of looking weak in front of him. It wasn’t her way or style. If only he could’ve seen how she was before she met
him.
The man dropped her hands, but his gaze wasn’t any less intense. “Sure, Eve. Whatever you say.”
The merc girl just heaved a sigh. “So what now?”
“What now? You stay clear of that asshole. He has a death sentence comin’ his way and I know exactly who his executor is gonna be.” Riddick let out a low growl.
Logan’s face flushed, she suddenly felt very hot, almost faint. This man was so confusing, so cryptic. Everything he did and said made her head spin. One moment he was cold and distant, the next he was willing to ghost someone to avenge her. More than anything she wanted to know what he was thinking, what he thought of her. That
also confused the hell out of her. But she knew all too well that he’d never open up, never tell her his inner most secrets, his desires, his wishes. She was at her wits end, ready to just scream.
Suddenly, those dreadful tears spilled down her cheeks. Her breathing became erratic. Before she knew it, she was hyperventilating, chest heaving as her lungs grasped for air to fill them.
Immediately, she spun around on her heels so that she was no longer facing the man. She didn’t want him to see her like this. Weak. It was infuriating.
“Get out.” She sobbed. “Get out.”
Riddick just stood there, motionless.
Logan choked on her tears. “I said get out.” She fell to her knees, her face buried in her hands. Why was her body reacting this way now? Of all times!
The merc girl just couldn’t stop herself from crying. Though she tried, it was as if her body was disconnected from her brain. It just would not comply with what she wanted it to do. She felt like she was suddenly becoming one of those girly girls she had always mocked in her youth. Hell, even mocked as an adult.
“That motherfucker
will pay, Eve.”
At his words, Logan only cried harder. Didn’t he understand that her tears were not because of Lord Vaako, but because of
him? Surely he couldn’t be that clueless. In Logan’s take on life there was only one thing that could truly ever break a woman, well one like her at least… didn’t he get that?
*+*+*
Riddick couldn’t help but stare at the merc beauty crying on the floor. For the first time, she looked like a helpless child, not a merc, not someone who could survive the cutthroat world of such a line of work.
She looked almost surreal in the Necro dress, shivering, sobbing. He inhaled deeply. He could smell not just her typical scent this time, but something more. It was something he couldn’t quite define. It was definitely Logan, but it was as if he could smell a part of her that she hadn’t let out before, a scent that no one else had had the luxury of breathing in before save himself right here and now. He liked that. That he could instill such a scent to emanate from her body. It was as if this particular scent of hers was meant only for him. It was intoxicating.
Another growl escaped his lips. His muscles tightened and his jaw clenched. Suddenly, he swooped the girl up into his arms and he carried her over to her bed. With great tenderness, never before witnessed by anyone, he gently laid her down. She continued to cry, trying miserably to cover her face. It was obvious, even to him, that she didn’t want him seeing her cry. He understood that, respected that. She was a merc after all.
Riddick placed a blanket over her and smoothed the hair around her face. Her hair was so soft, her skin so perfect… even if it was red and blotchy from crying. He suddenly wondered how many men had actually gotten to see this woman cry. Probably not many, he mused.
Ever so quietly, he whispered into the merc girl’s ear. “You still want me to get out?”
Logan removed her hands from her tear-stained face and looked up into his eyes. “I don’t know what I want anymore.” Her voice was almost inaudible, quavering.
Riddick closed his eyes and looked away from the girl briefly. Something struck him just then. He didn’t understand it, couldn’t begin to describe it. Finally, he turned back towards her again.
“Why don’t you rest now, princess? I’ll check on you later.” Then, without knowing why, he was compelled to brush his fingers against her cheek. Her skin was as soft as her hair.
Beautiful.
Logan reached for his hand and he instantly took hold of it. He gave it a squeeze.
“Sleep,” he said. And at that, he released her hand and quietly backed away leaving her alone to rest.
*+*+*
Toombs paced back and forth in his room mumbling curses under his breath. Just then, his door swung open and Riddick stormed in.
“Jesus Christ, you don’t
ever knock.”
“Cut the bullshit, what did you learn?”
“Fuck you! Where’s Logan? Why ain’t she with you?”
“She’s resting right now. Vaako is useless, so that plan is dead in the water, got it? So no more questions about it. You bring it up again and I’ll hurl you out so fast I won’t care whether we’ve hit atmo or not.”
“Easy there… pal.” Toombs smirked. “Just askin’. You don’t gotta get all freaky and shit.”
Riddick just let out a grunt. “So?”
Toombs began pacing again. “There’s some serious shit goin’ down and that fuckin’ Elemental is at the center of it.”
“I’m listening.”
“For shits and giggles I decided to follow ‘er and see that she did her part properly with that Necro. Let’s just say that there’s been a change in plans. A change she never told us and a change I don’t think she ever planned on tellin’ us neither.”
Riddick grimaced. “I seem to remember a couple of mercs thinking themselves wise for taking the initiative at one time too.”
“Fuck me, Riddick. This is different. I’m not that stupid. I know better than to cross you in a situation like this. After all this crap is over with, then maybe, but not now.”
Riddick let out a laugh. “See your point. So what’s her change in plans.”
“Well, she told that Necro that she had two choices - one where they let you lead everyone to the gates and one where they kill you and do it themselves. She was good. She got them believin’ that they need you to lead, which’ll keep us at the helm like we planned.”
“Go on.”
“But, she said that they needed to kill some girl in a preservation chamber too.”
Riddick went rigid.
“Hit a nerve, I see.”
“No. But I know who they’re talkin’ about.” He paused. “It’s just that she’s dead already.”
“Why the hell they want to kill someone who’s already dead? Makes no fuckin’ sense!”
“It has to do with the gates.”
“Oh yeah, that Underverse bullshit. Well, that Elemental bitch said something about you crossing the girl over and shit and something about reuniting. But if she’s dead, then that just seems stupid. Maybe I heard her wrong.”
Riddick didn’t answer. He just stood there, expressionless.
“Anyway, she also said something about how Necros who cross into Underverse before their due time can cheat death.”
At first Riddick didn’t respond. His look turned thoughtful. “How interesting.”
*+*+*
Logan just lay there staring at the ceiling in her darkened room. Her heart was racing, but the tears finally stopped. After several minutes, she stood up. She felt so dirty in the Necro dress. She needed to take it off, to wash off everything that just happened.
She slipped out of the dress and went into the shower. The hot water felt so good as it caressed her skin. She had to admit that one of her favorite things about living on the basilica was the fact that she actually had her own room and could wash regularly.
Once done, she reached for her towel. The steam was still heavy in the air. She patted her hair first and then dried the rest of her body off. Immediately she grabbed her old merc clothes. She couldn’t wait to put those back on. And that dress? It needed to be burned.
*+*+*
Riddick quietly slipped into the merc girl’s room. Upon entering, he immediately turned around so that he was facing the door. She was in the middle of changing and he didn’t want to invade her privacy. He had already glimpsed too much and the urge to turn back around and watch was great. At that, he swallowed hard and slipped back out of the room undetected.
He stood outside her door and grabbed the back of his neck with his left hand. He felt strange just standing there and a weird sort of anxiousness washed over him. At that, he knocked lightly on her door.
“Just a minute.” It was Logan’s voice.
A minute later, the door opened and Logan stood there in the doorway. Riddick just stood there, unable to talk. She was no longer in the Necro dress - a good thing, but in her merc clothes. Despite that, he couldn’t help but see the flesh that was
her beneath the cotton covering her skin. Though his glimpse of her naked body mere moments ago was quick, it was enough to burn the image of her into his brain forever.
Logan looked up into his silver-shined eyes. “Hi,” she said softly.
Riddick just continued to stand there.
“You can come in.”
The merc girl’s hair was still wet and he could smell the soap on her skin. He breathed in deeply as he entered the room. Everything smelled of Eve.
“Feelin’ better?”
“I guess.”
“You look better.”
Logan shifted back and forth on her feet. He could see that she was feeling awkward. It was probably because she had broken down in front of him earlier.
Fuckin’ merc pride. Suddenly, she walked over to a crumpled heap of clothing that was lying on the floor. She picked it up and walked back over to the man.
“I want this burned. I don’t ever want to wear one of these freakin’ dresses ever again.”
Riddick smiled. “I think that can be arranged.” He took the dress from her. “Besides, it didn’t suit you, princess.”
Logan’s cheeks turned red. “Thanks,” she whispered.
The tension in the air was thick, suffocating. And Riddick couldn’t help but stare at the merc standing before him. He really liked what he saw, almost too much. Suddenly, he looked down at the dress in his hands. “You okay to walk around?”
Logan arched an eyebrow. “Uh… sure.”
“Aereon’s a traitor, Eve. A fuckin’ traitor. You, me and Toombs need to meet. Can’t let that calculating bitch have the upper hand.”
Logan nodded. “Let’s go then.”
*+*+*
Toombs needed to let off some steam. He was still agitated by the scene he saw between the Elemental and the Necro woman. And he was anxious about what sort of plan Riddick was scheming up after he found out the whole deal. So, he got on the floor of his room and started doing push ups. Exercise kept you fit and was a great way to clear your head and shake off your nerves.
“Twenty-three, twenty-four…”
Suddenly, his door swung open.
“Twenty-five. Fucking Christ!” Toombs got up. He saw the Furyan standing in the doorway, Logan close behind him. He looked at the merc girl. “He do this to you too?”
Logan just looked confused and smiled weakly.
“No such thing as privacy anymore.”
“Shut it.” Riddick paused. “Now that we’re all here we can talk.”
“So start talkin’ and make it fast. I was on a roll.” The sweat was dripping down the sides of Toombs’ face.
“Why don’t we start with you updating Eve on everything you heard.”
Logan glanced at Riddick and then at Toombs and then back at Riddick once again. “This is how you found out about Aereon?”
Riddick nodded. “Toombs used his head for once and did something smart.”
Toombs just scowled though he was glad to see that he was finally gaining some respect from the Furyan.
“Yeah, well, I got lucky and found out some interesting shit. Looks like Aereon has her own agenda and it ain’t necessarily jiving with ours. She and that Necro bitch are workin’ together now, far as I can tell.”
Logan sat down on the edge of Toombs’ bed.
“Aereon got the Necro believin’ that Riddick needs to stay in charge of them while we get to Valhalla, so that’s good. But she brought up some strange stuff. Said that once at the gates they needed to kill that girl down in the preservation chamber.”
Logan’s insides turned to ice. She knew that the Furyan cared deeply for that girl. That she was probably the only human being he truly loved or would ever love. It was plain as day that time she saw him watching over her lifeless body.
Toombs just continued talking. “She said something about how killing the girl would help the Necros and get rid of Riddick and probably us, I’m guessin’.” He paused. “Though I still find it weird that they want to kill a girl who’s already dead.”
“Just finish up,” Riddick interjected.
“Yeah. Well, somethin’ else was said. That Necros who pass through the gates before they die actually can cheat death. Not sure what that means, but they both seemed to think it was important.”
“It is,” said Riddick. “I have a theory.”
Toombs chuckled. “This oughta be rich.”
Riddick growled causing Toombs’ face to go serious once again. “Their Lord Marshall was a holy half-dead. And they said that the first of them to go beyond the gates was the one who first gained that holy power.” Riddick began pacing. “Obviously, on this side of the gates, he was mortal. I was able to kill ‘im.”
Logan stood up just then and walked over to Riddick. The Furyan came to a halt in front of her and looked down into her brown eyes.
“So, you think that in Underverse they achieve immortality?”
“Exactly.” A small smile crept over his lips. “But I think that there’s a way we can still destroy them even if they pass through.”
“Destroy the gate…” Logan whispered.
“Smart woman.” Riddick looked over at Toombs. “Very smart woman.”
Toombs just smirked. “Okay, so we lead ‘em to wherever and destroy the gate. Great.”
“No.”
“No? What the fuck you mean by that?”
“We still have a problem. We don’t know where Valhalla is.”
*+*+*
The Furyan’s voice sounded sad, Logan thought. She knew he was thinking of that girl, the fact that he’d probably never be able to reunite with her. That he either had to give her up to the Necros or give her a proper funeral on this side of the gates. She felt for him.
“Well, aren’t there stories about a planet with a gateway to the other side of the universe? I kinda remember hearing such stuff as a kid.”
Riddick and Toombs looked over at the merc girl, giving her their full attention.
“Ummm… well, I remember hearing something about it being near the center of the galaxy. Where time began. But on the other side of the universe, beyond the portal, it’s supposed to be nothing but chaos and warfare.”
“Sounds like a Necro’s wet dream,” Toombs mused aloud.
Logan could feel Riddick’s eyes burning into her soul. She couldn’t even meet those silver-shined eyes of his, he was staring so intensely.
“So the center it is,” Riddick stated, his eyes, unblinking, never looking away from her once.
