Shouldn't it be up to your hubs to say "we cannot host a major holiday even on such short notice without having been consulted prior to the change, so no, we'll stick with the original plan, and anyone who comes to our house will have to wait outside until we get home after the holiday"? Because I would have thought he wouldn't like having his right to keep his own household trampled by family fiat.

Seriously. Who does that?

You guys should start mounting surprise family trips to your inlaws without telling them, and staying longer than you tell them you're going to. And not giving them any money. Hell, they do that to you, they obviously just do things that way, so fuck it, join in. And feel vindictive the whole time. :)
