Trent could believe how stupid he’d been. First he’d made the mistake of bringing Chloe to the one place he’d endanger himself, and then he’d let Elissa blabber on about the exact thing he’d wanted to keep secret. What was worse was that she’d not only revealed Charlotte as his ex-girlfriend, but additionally dug him a deeper grave by mentioning that she wasn’t the only ex he had. The way Elissa had phrased it had made it sound like he just had an odd fetish for girls with dark hair and blue eyes. Chloe meant a lot more to him than just her traits, and the thought that Chloe might think less of him or his feeling for her as nothing more than a physical attraction. He dreaded the thought of facing Chloe again, but at the same time he didn’t want to leave her to her own thoughts and conclusion. So he quickly scolded the waitress, explaining as little as he could to the young woman who just smiled at him knowingly the whole way through. Making Trent feel even more annoyed and embarrassed than he was already. Plus, there wasn’t anything he could help Elissa with seeing as how she hadn’t even taken their order yet. And even if she had, the only thing Trent would have been able to do is open a few tightly closed bottles, or shift around heavy sacks of food.
Returning to the table, he looked at Chloe nervously, afraid of whatever question would be shot his way. One arm stretching over his front and rubbing his other elbow as he glanced around the room sheepishly. “Uh, about what just happened….” He started, not knowing how to continue, he figured she’d want some sort of explanation, but there was no way of doing so without stirring up her brother theory again. “I know that probably looked really bad, and I’m sorry you had to hear it from someone else but….” He paused, walking over beside her chair and kneeling on the floor. Taking her hand with both of his and squeezing down on them reassuringly. “You’re the only person I want Chloe, the only person I’ll proudly state that I love” his face going as bright as his hair. He’d slept with several women and heard those words whispered to him countless times, but this was the first time he’d said it himself, and for a second he felt a bit guilty for brushing off the confessions of love he’d received in the past, as admitting such directly to the person’s face wasn’t an easy task. Opening his mouth to add to his comment, he was about to go all out, already as embarrassed as he could get, he figured he had no dignity to lose when he was once again interrupted…. By the same person.
“Hey lovebirds, I don’t mind you getting all mushy in my store but could you order something first?” the bubbly young girl chirped, poking her head out from the doorway that led to the kitchen out the back. It was clear from her expression she’d been listening in on the whole thing. Not having received an order, she didn’t have any work to do, and watching Trent and Chloe was certainly more interesting than hanging out the back and reading up on recipes she might not ever have the chance of using unless she started scraping in a few customers that would actually buy something.
