As time passed, the townspeople began to notice wolves inching closer and closer. Which was odd, because they had never done that before. They didn't fear the farm dogs, who snarled and threatened them, and before long livestock began to disappear. There was no blood, no gore; they simply vanished.
"What should we do? There's too many for our hunters." Some of the men had gathered to discuss the steps needed to protect the town.
"We can't afford to let them steal more chickens and sheep."
"May I offer aid...?" They turned, seeing Aileen standing not far. She was making her way hoke from the market, it seemed.
"And what aid could a woman offer?" One man sneered. She merely smiled, unbothered by the distrust.
"Wolfsbane - fresh or dried. Hang it near things that you wish to ward the wolves from and you needn't fear any more." She said, "An old trick from my home. I promise it works." She gave a small bow of her head and bid them farewell before heading home again. The men scratched their heads before hurrying after her.
"Wait, Aileen, hold on!" They called and she stopped to look at them, "That really works?"
"Aye. Saved many a sheep back home. If you give me just a moment, I can get things set up for you?"
"How do you know wolves don't like this...bane thing?" One asked. She smiled.
"They avoid it, obviously. It's common sense. Please, just one moment, and I'll help you." She said and continued to her home. They all passed suspicious glances at one another. No normal woman would really know such things.
