Batgirl Begins (dbspock/WendyTheRed)

Barbara awoke the next morning and quickly discovered Chloe wasn't in the room. A quick sniff of the air told her the other girl was making breakfast and she smiled as she felt for her glasses, putting them on as she yawned and stretched. She stripped off the bikini bottoms and placed them in the bag Chloe had packed for her, replacing them for the moment with some black sweatpants. She tugged off the Superman shirt and looked at it briefly before tucking it away as well. Her eye caught on the black Bat logo sweatshirt and she pulled it out, holding it up before herself.

She quickly slid it on and padded over to the a nearby mirror to look at herself. She turned slowly, looking at herself from several angles and then struck a pose, hands on hips, feet shoulder length apart and her back ramrod straight. She looked at herself critically, mind flashing back to her thoughts about how no one had helped as she muttered to herself. "He would have helped. Batman would have stopped them. But he wasn't there. He can't be everywhere. Gotham needs more protectors like him..."

The pancakes were just about ready, and Chloe padded down the hall to check and see what was up with Babs. Dod she need to plate the pancakes for immediate consumption, or cover them and sabe them for later? She opened the door of her bedroom and saw the air mattress Babs had been sleeping on and saw it was empty. It was a small room and Babs wasn't trying to hide, so it didn't take long for Chloe to spot her. She watched with amusement as Babs posed in front of the mirror, but she couldn't hear what she said. "Good morning, sleepyhead." Chloe said with a slight giggle, despite the fact she'd woken up less than an hour before. "Breakfast is served, Milady." Chloe made a slight bow before she turned to get back to the kitchen before the pancakes burned. "And don't forget Inky." Chloe giggled again.

Barbara jumped slightly when the door was open and Chloe busted her living in a brief fantasy. She blushed and smiled at the other girl then rolled her eyes at her 'command' to join her for breakfast. She grabbed the stuffed octopus and headed for the kitchen, her nose twitching when she smelled the food. She sat down at the table, making a point of plopping Inky down on it as well. She almost drooled at the site of the pancakes and smiled at Chloe as she settled down to begin her breakfast.

"So, other than being dragged shopping at lunch, if you want to go of course, what are your plans for today? I was hoping to borrow your computer and get started on my project but if you need to do stuff, I can use dad's instead so I'm not in your way or alone in your house or whatever." She poured a generous helping of syrup onto her pancakes and began to apply butter to them in a fairly methodical fashion, starting with the bottom one and working her way up.

Chloe had just been about to ask Babs if she liked pancakes or would rather have something else (though Chloe was at a loss as to what that might be unless they raided the Captain's fridge) when Babs began to dig in. Well, I guess that answers that question. Chloe said to herself as she playfully put a plate complete with pancake in front of Inky, then sat down across from Babs with her own plate of pancakes and orange juice.

"If I want to go? You mean miss out on the chance to join the fearless Barbara Gordon in her quest for underwear? That's not happening." Chloe laughed, then shook her head. "If your program is going to take the memory I think it is, no, you can't use your Dads." Chloe stated. "And yeah...we can work on your program until the Captain picks it up. And you can be alone in my house whenever you want." Chloe couldn't come up with a reason for that happening at the moment, but she wanted Babs to know that was an option.

Barbara finished her pancakes and sat back to sip her orange juice. Today she was far more ladylike as she wasn't nearly starving, though she was still hungry as she'd really only had the one meal yesterday. She smiled at Chloe as she took another sip of her drink. "So, I've been thinking. I don't want to share what I've been thinking, not all of it. It' still just a rough idea in my head but one part of it is, I need to get in shape, especially if I join that Dojo that dad mentioned. Now, gym memberships cost money and I'm already going to put a strain on my dad's finances."

She tapped her fingers on the rim of her glass as she thought for a moment. "I haven't had a chance to look and see what size his backyard is, or if he's using it but, well, Darrell, he's my step-dad, he used to watch this game show called American Ninja Warrior. They'd do an obstacle course, climb rock walls, swing on ropes, stuff like that. And some of the contestants made their own backyard versions to practice on with gymnast bars and boards in the air with hand holds to do simulated rock climbing, ropes to swing over foam pads and more. And most of that stuff can be found in a junkyard. I just need to measure my dad's yard and do some sketching. And talk dad into it..."

She looked at Chloe as she finally paused to take a breath after just blurting it all out, curious what Chloe would think of her idea.

Chloe blinked rapidly as Babs changed the subject from shopping to computers to gyms all before she could finish one pancake. She didn't know Babs well, of course, but she was already getting the idea the girls brain worked a million miles a minute and her mouth sometimes seemed to skip a connecting thought or two. Not that Chloe minded, though. She was a big Sherlock Holmes fan, and it made her feel like Dr. Watson trying to keep up with the great detective. Thus she didn't mind Babs not sharing the details of her idea...like Holmes, Babs probably didn't want to give away her plan just in case it didn't work.

"Gym memberships are over rated." Chloe opined when Babs paused and seemed to wait for her input. "They seem more for networking than getting into shape it seems. And his backyard isn't big, and neither is mine, but if you use the fence as part of the obstacle course, you could get a workout. Of course, you'll probably need more than that. Calisthenics and running will cover a lot of it. I've never seen Ninja Warrior, but there was a Macgyver episode once where he made a gym out of spare parts. Maybe we could do something like that." Chloe shrugged. After what Babs had told ehr about her arrival in Gotham, it wasn't a surprise Babs wanted to get into shape.

Barbara smiled at Chloe, not surprised she hadn't seen the show. She'd only seen it because of her stepdad and she often found it annoying women struggled so much compared to the men in the show. She contemplated. "Well, the obstacle course, all we really need is six or eight tires I can run through to get balance. We'd need, this thing I saw that's like a ladder with hooks on it and you have a bar you use to work your way up the ladder by jerking your upper body. It's hard to describe. We'd also need some kind of stable wooden surface with holes drilled in it. You then find wooden or metal bars that fit in the holes and you use them to climb up the wooden surface. That might not be doable, I might have to find one of those rock climbing places instead. We'd also need to make something like gymnastics bars which I could also use for high jumps and stuff...."

She paused to take a breath and blushed slightly. "I'll uh, draw some sketches or something. I'm sorry, I just feel like I have so much I need to get done!"

"There's a salvage yard on the edge of town. Since we don't need good tires, we can probably get them for pretty cheap." Chloe theorized. "We can probably find a metal bar there as well, though transport might be a problem." Chleo not only didn't own a car, but she didn't have a driver's license yet. She wasn't sure how to get the hook board, or whatever Babs was talking about, so she left that part out. "I've seen boards like that in the gym at school." Chloe agreed, though once again she wasn't sure how to build one, and she'd never seen anyone actually use one before. "There are rock climbing places in town, though I think they cost as much as a gym membership. You could try just climbing the rocks outside town, but I'm not sure how safe that is." Chloe clearly wanted to help whatever scheme Babs was hatching, but what Babs was proposing was way out of Chloe's league so she wasn't sure how she could help.

Chloe finished off her juice, then walked across and opened a drawer. She took out a pen and pad of paper, then walked down and set them down next to Babs. "Maybe you need to make a list." Chloe said with a light shrug. It often helped her when she was feeling overwhelmed.

Barbara nodded and then laughed as something occurred to her. "Are we overthinking it? I bet you anything Waynetech has a gym on site for employees. Still I can't count on interns being able to use it."

Barbara looked gratefully at the pen and paper and didn't hesitate to start writing. The first page she titled "Waynetech internship" and started listing steps to accomplish that goal, some of them with substeps below them. It wasn't long until she was totally focused on making her lists and jotting down ideas.

Chloe chuckled. "No bet here. They probably have some virtual reality simulator that lets you go to muscle beach or something." She agreed, then shrugged. She had no idea how the intern thing at Wayne Enterprises worked beyond the fact it was very hard to get into. Unless you had an invite to a Wayne Gala or something.

it seemed a pad and pen was a formidable weapon in Bab's hand, and her friend seemed to forget she was there. Not that Chloe really minded, she was used to being alone. She cleaned up the used dishes as quietly as she could, which don't take too long as she just put them in the dishwasher, then headed down the hall to her computer room. While Babs was working on her list, Chloe figured she would check up on her email.

Barbara finally stopped writing and looked around, blinking owlishly when she realized Chloe had left at some point. She looked around and saw that Chloe had cleaned up all of the dishes and felt a bit guilty as she gathered her various writings and stood, heading off in search of her new friend.

She found Chloe in her little computer room and smiled as she saw the other girl checking her email or surfing the web or something. She moved down the hall to Chloe's bedroom and took off the sweat pants and sweatshirt. She looked over the toiletries that Chloe had provided her, hoping to find perhaps a spare toothbrush among them. If she did, she'd lay it aside to brush her teeth after she got dressed.

First though she put on whatever bra and panties Chloe had loaned her, then looked crouched, looking through the various tops and bottoms Chloe had loaned her, debating which ones to put on.

Chloe wasn't so focused on her task that she missed her new friend poking her head in the door. She quickly finished off the text message she was composing, then rose in search of Babs. It wasn't a large house by any means, so Chloe didn't have much of a problem finding the red head.

She discovered Babs in the bedroom looking over the toiletries she had provided, glad that she did have a stash of extra toothbrushes she could share. Chloe couldn't help but stare at Babs but for a few moments, recognizing the underwear the other girl was wearing. along with the sports bra that seemed to be elastic enough that Babs larger bust was still accommodated. Chloe crossed her arms and leaned against the door frame before she spoke. "I got a chat message from a friend this morning. I was just curious if you'd be interested in seeing a movie this afternoon? My treat." Chloe assured her. She did kind of want to go see the new sci-fi movie, but she wasn't about to abandon her new friend, or leave her feeling strapped for cash when Chloe had at least enough money set aside for both of them to see the matinee.

Barbara had heard Chloe's approach so didn't jump or anything when she spoke. She looked over her shoulder and smiled warmly at her. "I'd love to. Assuming it's not a date. I don't want to be a third wheel or anything." She winks at Chloe and lifts out one of the shirts with a low cut neckline along with a skirt that would probably come to mid-thigh on Barbara since she was taller than Chloe.

"What do you think? I could wear these today. I think my dad might pass out but he'll just have to deal. Uhhh...unless you want me to dress down for the movie so your 'friend' doesn't get distracted." She teases Chloe a little though in truth she has no idea if the friend is male or female and if it is anything more than friendship.

Chloe burst out laughing at the implication the outing was a date. “Not at all. Just a movie. “ Chloe promised, just in case the laughter didn’t tip Babs off.

Chloe raised her eyebrows a bit at the outfit Babs chose. After her experience on the bus, Chloe would have expected her to be a little more low profile. But then, maybe this was Babs way of making a statement, that she wasn’t going to let a bad experience define her wardrobe.

“I think you are going to send your Dad to an early grave. “ Chloe teased her. “And I doubt Dave will even notice. “ A bit naive on Chloe’s part, perhaps, but she’d known the boy for years and had a hard time thinking along those terms.

She laughed at Chloes reaction to the movie. "Alrigjt as long as I'm not getting in the way I'd love to go to a movie with you."

While Chloe had no way of knowing it, she was spot on with why she chose the clothes. Barbara was determined not to let them win even a minor victory like her being afraid to wear revealing clothes.

Barbara nodded and began to pull the outfit on as she grinned at Chloe. "I'll do my best not to give my dad a heart attack. Besides he's a police Captain he can take it." She spun slowly when she got dressed. "Well? How do I look? And whose Dave? Your date for the movie?"

“You could never get in the way. “ Chloe declared with a large grin. She then shook her head. “With an outfit like that you could have fooled me. “ Chloe declared. She doubted the Captain would actually say anything, he’d probably have no idea how to deal with a daughter in a revealing outfit, but Chloe had little doubt he would notice. “And yes, I’m sure he’s seen worse. “

Chloe clapped lightly while Babs spun. The redhead certainly filled the clothes out better than Chloe ever had. “You look stunning. “ she declared before adamantly shaking her head. “He’s just a friend who is a guy. Your allowed to do that in Gotham. “

She smiled at Chloe as she she gave her approval of the clothing. She nodded and walked over, giving Chloe a big hug should she allow it. "Thank you Chloe. Between you and dad, you've made my first day in Gotham infinitely better." She pulled back from the hug (if it happened!) with a small smile, looking at her. "And of course he is just a friend, I was just teasing you." She thought about Chloe's comment about him not noticing what she was wearing. "I'm guessing he's gay?" She was just curious but if he wasn't interested in Chloe and wouldn't notice her own clothing she somewhat arrogantly made some assumptions about him.

She stepped to the door to Chloe's bedroom after grabbing the toothbrush. "I better go take care of this. After that, we can do whatever. Assuming you don't, you know, have job stuff to do." She suddenly looked horrified. "Oh wow, I've just been monopolizing your time and not even thinking about stuff like that. I'm sorry Chloe!" She looked embarrassed and hurried off to the bathroom to brush her teeth.

Chloe not only had no objection to the hug, but she returned it, wrapping her arms around Babs and squeezing her tightly. “Well, considering how your Gotham adventure started, that isn’t saying much. “ she teased. “And just don’t tease him like that. His head would probably explode at the idea. “ she chuckled softly at the thought. “And no, not gay, I don’t think, just a guy who doesn’t pay much attention to that stuff. “ Of course that may have just been Chloe having a blind spot.

“Don’t worry about it. “ Chloe called after her, not wanting to chase her into the bathroom but wanting to reassure her that she wasn’t an inconvenience. “The grass can wait another day or two. “

Barbara came back a few minutes later and put the toothbrush away. She definitely seemed to be in much better spirits than she was when she first met Chloe. She looked at Chloe thoughtfully. "Well, I don't want you to lose any income. If you need to mow, I can either do my research or even come keep you company, bring you lemonade and stuff." She winked playfully and stretched.

"Or we can just waste some time until it's time for the shopping trip if you like. I'm really quite open."

Chloe shrugged at first when Babs offered to keep her company, then she couldn't help but giggle. "My own personal servant who brings me lemonade on demand? Who can turn down an offer like that?" She said with a wink, then shrugged as she grew more serious. "It's kind of hard to visit with the lawnmower running." She pointed out. "So I can set you up on my computer so you can start your project. And you said you had some questions about your Dad. Don't tell him...it would probably embarrass him even more than your outfit. ...but I've been making a little scrapbook of Gotham Gazette articles about him that you might enjoy looking at." Wasting time was clearly not in Chloe's personality.

Barbara smirked at Chloe's comment about her own personal servant but nodded when she mentioned setting her up on the computer. "That would be nice. I'd really appreciate that. I need to get started, there's not a lot of time until the gala." She actually perks up, looking excited when Chloe mentions the scrapbook. "Oh! I would love that. I uhhh...sometimes checked up on him online but didn't follow it all." She looks away, letting out a sigh. "I should have come here long ago, he didn't deserve what happened, my mother taking me and leaving." She shook her head, then seemed to force herself to put it out of her mind for the moment as she looked at Chloe.

"Well, let's get started."

Chloe nodded in understanding when Babs said she didn't follow all her dads exploits. "He likes to keep a low profile." She tried to justify it, but quickly moved on. Thankfully Babs seemed to have a laser focus when she wanted it, and playing with Chloe's computer and looking through her scrapbook seemed to occupy her time until Chloe appeared at the doorway of her office, freshly showered and dressed in an outfit similar to Babs, except she didn't fill it out as well.

"What happened to my lemonade? I'm parched." Chloe complained as she dramatically leaned against the doorway and held a hand to her forehead, before she broke down into giggles. "Come on, your dads waiting." She said as she led Babs out of her house, carefully locking it up and setting the alarm behind her. If Jim noticed the outfits the two girls wore, he knew better than to say anything about it, but simply started driving towards the mall as he asked about their day so far.

He not only made no comments about the clothing items Babs chose, but he didn't even look at them, having no desire to know what kind of underwear his daughter wore. After that, he had to head back to the station after Chloe promised to get them back to the house safely via the bus system.

Chloe and Babs were then sitting in the food court, waiting for Dave to show up, when a trio of boys, perhaps their age or a bit older, formed a rough circle around a teenager who was trying to eat her meal in peace.

"You need more catsup, Lapusso." A boy with a blue mohawk taunted the dark haired teen, and putting action to words he grabbed a catsup bottle off a nearby table and sprayed it into the girl's hair. And once again, no one seemed inclined to step in and help.

When Chloe summoned her Barbara actually seemed surprised to see her for a moment. "Lemonade? Hmmm?" She absently responded to Chloe's tease. She simply blinked at the other girl as she looked away from the monitor but then her eyes focused on Chloe and she smiled. "Oh. Right. Dad. Shopping. Got it." She stood from the computer, looking a bit embarrassed at how focused she'd been. "Sorry, I can get a bit...intense when I'm focused. You look nice. We'll be almost twins today..."

She was somewhat surprised her dad didn't stay with them but she knew he had work to do and she understood. She soon found herself in the food court with Chloe, picking at her food when she looked up, watching the trio of boys surround the other teenager. She frowns at what she sees and glances around, seeing no one stepping in to help she empties her tray of food and calmly stands.

She lifts the tray and approaches calmly, casually even and when she gets close she lashes out, attempting to hit Blue Mohawk in the back of the knees with the tray, hard enough to hopefully buckle his knees and bring him to a kneeling position. If she succeeds she'll wrap her fingers tightly in his mohawk while he is still surprised and hiss out. "You owe the girl an apology." Her other hand is curled into a tight fist and she glares at the other two as if daring them to try something.

Wow. Chloe knew how to concentrate, but Babs seemed to be in a world of her own, and to have totally forgotten their conversation earlier. She shook her head at Babs comparison. "Sure, the blonde and the red head. You find that in every family tree." She laughed.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Chloe saw the girl being picked on, but knew there was nothing she could do. Any attempt at intervention would just make things worse for everyone, but Babs didn't seem to see it that way. Before Chloe could stop her, or even decide if she wanted to try, Babs was already in way over her head, and had actually taken mohawk man down with impressive skill.

Hawk had no idea who had hit him from behind...he hadn't expected anyone to get involved. This was Gotham, after all. The other two boys hadn't seen Babs coming either...they were focused on their initial victim. One had managed to grab her arms and hold them behind her back, while the other had gleefully reached out and pulled her shirt open...a technique Babs would be a bit familiar with by now. But when they heard Babs speak, both turned their attention to her, then exchanged a glance of surprise. One kept a hold of their initial victim, not wanting to lose that advantage, while the other went into a standard karate defensive stance, unsure how big a threat the new player was if she didn't have the element of surprise.

Unfortunately for Babs, she wasn't the only one with the element of surprise, as there was a fourth member of the group who had just joined them, and he reached out and grabbed Babs by the hair, the same trick she had pulled on Hawk. Hawk didn't exactly give up either, as he still had both arms free, and he lashed back with an elbow in an attempt to strike hsi unseen assailant.

The situation almost looked like something out of one of those comedy martial arts movies. As the fourth one grabbed her hair and pulled her back she didn't let go of Hawk's hair, pulling him back with her. Somehow, she managed to see his elbow coming back and did the only defensive maneuver she had available in that moment.

She brought the same tray she had used to hit him in the back of the knees in between them, letting him slam his elbow into it. She only has one hand on it as the other is in his hair but hopefully it deflects the elbow strike to the side and away from her. If she is supremely lucky he might hit at a bad angle and slam his own funny bone, numbing the joint.

As she did that she attempted to stomp down on the foot of the man behind her, wanting little more than to get his fingers out of her hair if she manages to cause him some pain with the stomp. "Let go of me you...you thug!" She yells out.
