Batgirl Begins (dbspock/WendyTheRed)

Barbara nodded thoughtfully at Chloe's counter offer pausing in the midst of washing the soap off of her thigh as she considered it, staring at the wall but not really seeing it. Not seeing much really since her glasses were on the counter next to the sink. "That would be fun. I'd have to ask dad. How big is the air mattress in case he says no? We could share it maybe."

She smiled at Chloe's reply about Waynetech. "I'm really good with computers and computer programming. My dad said he can get us into some gala and maybe get me a meeting with Bruce Wayne. All I have to do is get him my resume and maybe a sample program to impress him. I have a couple of ideas..."

She looked embarasseed suddenly. "I guess that's not fair is it? If my dad helps me like that?" She bit her lip and finished rinsing that leg before switching to the other. Lifting that leg would reveal she was indeed a natural red head should Chloe look. "So if I stay overhear I can sleep on the air mattress by your bed..."
..

Chloe shook her head at Babs suggestion, having no idea how blind Babs was without her glasses. "Not unless one of us wants to sleep on top of the other." She said, and while that certainly might prove interesting...especially as Babs unintentionally showed off her red hair...that wasn't the kind of night Chloe wanted to have.

"I'm not bad with computers myself, but they have a building full of tech geeks over there." Chloe complained, then her eyes widened as Chloe talked about the gala. "You are going to the Mayor's gala?" She asked in amazement as she tried not to be jealous. Less than a day in Gotham, and her friend was already getting together with the people who controlled the town. Chloe couldn't help but wonder how long it would be before her friends social life left her in the dust. But she shook her head once again as Babs started talking about being fair.

"Nothing is fair in life, especially not in this town. I bet half the people in town got the job because they know someone. If you can get Bruce Wayne, of all people, to look at your resume, go for it." Chloe told her, then nodded. "Yeah...we can have a camp out in my room and talk about your dad...though we may want to leave that part out when you ask him." Chloe laughed.

She laughed at Chloe's reply. "I doubt that'd work. And dad would probably get the wrong idea." She finished rinsing her leg and lowered it then turned and rinsed off her hair.

She shrugged at the question about the gala. "I don't know. Dad mentioned it when I was talking about jobs. It was when I was telling him maybe I could get a job as like a receptionist at the GCPD." She paused in mid-rinse. "Sneaky. I bet he doesn't want me working at the police station and was trying to distract me."

She turned off the water and leaned out, feeling around for a towel while squinting. "Maybe if I get an internship there I can get one for you too eventually." She grinned at the idea for the sleepover. "Good advice."

"Not if you actually wanted to sleep tonight." Chloe agreed, then frowned thoughtfully. "I don't know what else it could be. I need to make sure he has his tux ready for the Mayor's gala this weekend, and it's at Wayne Manor, so I would guess Mr. Wayne would be there as well. And yeah...after the Riddler bombing attempt and the Joker anthrax scare, I doubt he'd want his daughter anywhere near the place." It wasn't hard to guess what Babs was feeling around for, and Chloe picked up a towel and handed it to her. She smiled broadly when Babs made her offer. "That would be great. Or at least you could make sure my resume got sent to the right pile." All Chloe knew to do now was send it to Human Resources. Having an actual specific name would be a great help, she was sure.

She smiled when she got the towel and began to dry off. "Yeah sleeping would be hard that way for sure. Well for the one on bottom at least."

She stiffened though when Chloe gave more details about the gala. "This weekend? That's not much time. Not if I want to have a program ready to show off to Mister Wayne!" She dried faster like she thought it was imminent until she realized what she was doing and laughed. "You know, I dont know how he is getting me in. Or why he is there. I guess it's because he's a captain? And I guess he has a plus one he wasn't using. That's kind of sad..."

She nodded as Chloe listed reasons why her dad wouldn't want her around the station and moved to drying her hair as she heard her comments about the resume. "If I get on I'll do what I can to help."

"And for the one on top too. You look kind of bony." Chloe teased her, then laughed as Babs began hurrying to dry off. "There's no rush. Your dad will drive you, it's not like you have to walk." Then it registered what Babs was really worried about. "Well, if it helps you can use my computer set up. It's not top of the line or anything, but its better than that relic your dad uses." Chloe offered, then shrugged. "I doubt he's there as a guest. Ever since that Scarecrow thing, the Captain runs most of Mr. Wayne's security for these things. And if you control the guest list, well, I guess getting your daughter in isn't a problem." She then grinned broadly at Babs promise to help. "I know you will." She said, and she had little doubt about that. She had an impulse to hug her friend, but held off on it as Babs was still naked and it would have been more than a bit awkward.

Barbara wrapped the towel around herself and reached for her glasses. Sliding them on she smiled as the world came back into focus then looked at Chloe thoughtfully. It occurred to her that she hadn't considered something in some of her plans for the computer program she was going to try to write. "That would be great. The program I have in mind, well, it might require me to uhhh...check some files on the GCPD's computers. Without, you know, having the passwords? I just wanted to warn you in case, that is a problem. I'll cover my tracks and I'm not going to damage anything or you know...do anything illegal. Other than the whole not being invited into their computer systems." She grabbed the bikini bottoms Chloe had loaned her and wiggled into them as she kept talking.

"I had this idea about a program to track criminals using the traffic cams at stop lights. Actually...maybe not criminals either. Your bulletin board made me think. Couldn't you use the traffic cams to track the Batmobile and see what Batman is up to?" She grinned at the other girl and then thought about what she had said about the gala. "Hmmm...you're right. He probably can get in guests as long as they're not troublemakers. I wonder, maybe two teenage girls wouldn't be much more problem than one. Or one teenage girl who accidentally opens a side door or something so her friend can also slip a resume to Bruce Wayne..." She winks at Chloe and then drops the towel so she can tug on the t-shirt.

"If it's not a problem for the Captain's daughter, it won't be a problem for me." Chloe said then after a brief pause decided to go for it. In for a penny, in for a pound as they said. "And I may have...overheard...some of those passwords you don't need." Chloe couldn't help dropping her voice into a whisper even though she knew no one else was in the house. She found herself nodding at the rest of Babs statement. What was a little hacking for the greater good, right? If they system worked all the time, there wouldn't be a Batman. You could bet he bent the law every now and then.

Any further thoughts on that were put to the side as Babs wriggled into her borrowed bikini bottoms. Even covered by the towel it was an interesting sight, especially as it was shortly followed by Chloe's first up close look at Babs breasts after the towel hit the floor. But the view didn't last long once Babs grabbed her shirt, and Chloe could focus on the conversation again. She started by shaking their head. "They've tried that before...right when he showed up. The Batmobile...just doesn't exist as far as the traffic cameras are concerned. They think it's got some weird sort of cloaking device on it or something...or that's what I heard." Chloe finished with a blush, certain Jim was unaware of just how much she overheard sometimes while doing the dishes.

The prospect of being allowed into the Mayor's gala made Chloe's mouth open in shock. Hand her resume in to the CEO of Wayne Enterprises himself? If that didn't work, Chloe might as well just resign herself to a life of flipping burgers. But she had to shake her head at the idea of slipping in the side door. "It wouldn't be that simple. I don't think I could even get TO a side door without being on the list." And she did NOT want to be caught by the Captain sneaking in uninvited. That would get her fired from her part time job quicker than anything. "No...I'm afraid you might be stuck with me as your plus one." Chloe laughed. "Maybe we should practice our pouty faces for when we ask him. The Captain won't be able to withstand our combined power."

Barbara gave Chloe a surprised look when she said she had passwords. She debated it, having an idea what level of access she might need and smiled. "Well, those might come in handy. I just will want to be careful so if I poke my nose into things I don't get the user in trouble." She blinked and a horrified look passed over her face. "Oh god. Please tell me my dad doesn't have his passwords on sticky notes on his computer desk or something..."

Barbara ran her fingers through her wet hair, doing her best to at least make it look presentable, then rolled her eyes at herself when she spotted Chloe's brush. She lifted it and gave Chloe a questioning look, not wanting to use it without permission. That was all forgotten at Chloe's next reply. "That makes sense..." Barbara said, the brush hanging loosely in her hand, unused for the moment. "I see. Well, it's not like he can make it invisible. So he must be overwriting the footage or something. All I have to do is find out his known movements recently then check traffic cam footage from cameras he should have passed. Something will show up." She pursed her lips. "I won't be able to give this program to Bruce Wayne though. I'll just have to prove it works, maybe show him an example of how I could track the Batmobile by showing some kind of restored footage on a day where witnesses saw the Batmobile in a certain location. You know, show it works but not give him the program. I don't think I want to take chances on accidentally exposing Batman."

She nodded thoughtfully at Chloe's next statement and grinned, still loosely holding the brush as her mind was focused on the discussion for now and not brushing her hair. "Right...good point. I doubt he'll turn down my plus one request when I tell him who it is."

Chloe snorted a bit. "Well...not anymore. They're encrypted under fingerprint lock on his phone." Chloe assured her, then nodded with a smile as Babs silently asked permission to use the brush. "Keep it." Chloe offered. She had a few more stuffed in a drawer someplace.

Chloe laughed when Babs said the Batmobile wasn't invisible. "According to some reports, Batman turns into smoke and goes up the chimney. Or he has a transporter in his belt. An invisible car would be a pretty tame rumor in this town." Not that Chloe believed a word of it, and she frowned thoughtfully as Babs presented the problem. "Tracking his movements isn't usually a problem. Just look for the surge of arrests." She said thoughtfully. "And there's a Batman sighting board as well, though I don't put a lot of stock into a lot of that. Some of the regular posters seem pretty reliable, though. And I wouldn't worry about exposing the Bat...the amount of resources they city has expended on trying to track him down, and they can't even agree he exists? And maybe you don't need an actual working program...maybe just a proof of concept thing?"

Chloe grinned so wide it looked like her face might split in half, and she held up her right hand. "I solemnly swear I will not be any trouble. He won't even know I'm there."

She smiled at the girl's generous offer and began to comb her hair, looking relieved when she heard her dad's passwords were on his locked phone. It wasn't perfect but it was better than what she had feared. She snorts at her reply about Batman and the rumors about him. "Even in Chicago there are rumors about him. My favorite is that he is actually a vampire and most of the criminals he catches are used for his blood supply."

"I only worry about exposing him because there's a reason he is hidden on traffic cams. If I had to guess, it's so people don't try to triangulate where he comes from when he appears. That's why I will have to do a proof of concept or show only the results but not the program. The idea is to show I can solve a problem others can't so I get that internship. Not risk showing some rich guy how to track Batman."

She laughed at Chloe's joke as she finished brushing her hair and turned to look at the other girl. She motioned to herself as they stood there. "Well, am I less...disgusting to look at and smelly at least?"

Chloe laughed at the theory Babs related. "Do they have any idea how much blood that is? Vampires don't drink that much." She said with a definitive nod before she broke into goggles again. "Besides, everyone knows he's a robot." She kept a strait face for almost three seconds before breaking into giggles again. She then shrugged at Babs reasoning. "Maybe. Or maybe he's just paranoid because that's how he stays alive." She said. If the Penguin couldn't bring down the Bat, she doubted a couple of teenagers could. But there was really no reason to talk Babs out of her plan, so Chloe let it go.

At Babs next question, Chloe leaned forward and experimentally sniffed at her. She could smell the strawberry scent of her shampoo, but she made a show of curling up her nose anyway. "I suppose that will have to do. The pizza will drown you out anyway. As for your looks..w.ell, I suppose its the best we can do with what we have." Chloe giggled again, then checked the app on her phone. "The pizza is on the way. We'd better get to your house before he does, and your dad eats all the pizza." Chloe warned as she turned and headed into the living room again. She grabbed the bag she'd packed for Babs, but left the air mattress for now. No pint in hauling it around until they decided where they were going to sleep.

She rolled her eyes at Chloe's teasing but smiled when she walked out of the bathroom. They seemed to get along and that was great but what caused the smile to grow even more something Chloe had casually said. 'Your house'. Maybe it would be assuming all went well when her dad called this Harvey guy. She followed her out of the bathroom. She saw Chloe grab the bag and moved over, holding out a hand. "Let me take it, no reason to have you carrying the stuff you loaned me like my maid or something." Once the bag was handled one way or the other she left to go over to her dad's house with Chloe, pausing as she realized she didn't have a key or anything and had no idea if he'd locked the door.

She decided to play it safe and knocked on the door, turning to smile at Chloe as they waited for him to come answer it. "I can't believe how fast this day has changed. It went from scary as hell to amazing in just a couple of hours."

Chloe had been expecting the eye roll and found herself giggling again when she was proven right. It seemed she'd laughed more in the last few minutes than she had in the past month, and it was a good feeling. She totally missed Babs reaction to the mention of 'your house' as it didn't seem that big a deal to her. Nor was carrying the bag, but Babs interrupted that plan. "But I am at your service, My lady." Chloe protested, but she quickly began laughing again as she surrendered the bag.

The trip next door didn't take long, of course, and Chloe was a bit surprised when Babs knocked on the door of her own house. Had Jim asked her to do that for some reason? But she didn't want to call attention to the perceived weirdness so she didn't say anything about that. She Babs with a broad smile when she said the day was amazing. "I know how you feel...about the amazing part, at least." Chloe claimed as Jim opened the door.

"Can I help you?" Jim asked as he saw the two teens on his doorstep, but he quickly stepped aside for fear Babs would take the joke the wrong way. He reached out to take her bag from her, then froze as he realized he wasn't sure where to put it. "Oh...I...um...I guess...you can use my room tonight." He determined.

She saw the confused look on Chloe's face as they waited on the door to open and shrugged slightly. "I don't have a key yet and well, I've only been here for a couple of hours. I don't really know..." She made a frustrated gesture. "how things are, like, do I just walk in? Do I knock?"

She stopped and turned when the door opened and for a second she froze at his teasing question then smiled and stepped in when she realized it was a joke. She saw him freezing and took a bit of pity on him as she realized he probably had some of the uncertainties she did. "Chloe loaned me an air mattress I can use. She also offered for me to sleep over at her place tonight while we get stuff figured out. And just because, you know, I think we're friends now." She grinned at Chloe and looked back at him. "Which is why she is my plus one for Bruce Wayne's gala."

She walked over and set the bag down in a convenient corner and glanced around the house curiously since it was her first time seeing it, let alone being inside.

"If he's expecting you, you can just walk in." Chloe explained the rule she and the captain had established many years ago by this point. She felt a bit guilty over the fact that she had a key and Jim's own daughter didn't, but she was reluctant to give hers up. "I'll show you where the spare key is, until we get a chance to make you one." Chloe promised, the thought Jim might not want her to have a key not even crossing her mind.

Jim blinked and stared at the deluge of information Babs poured out on him as she stepped inside, and he glanced over at Chloe uncertainly, just in case Babs had invited herself over to Chloe's house. But the look on the blonde's face and her enthusiastic nod convinced him it was a mutual decision. "Well...it seems I missed out on a lot while you were over there." Jim said with a rueful chuckle. "But that would simplify things a bit for tonight. "I'll get the office...your room...cleared out tomorrow." That was going to take a bit of a shift of thinking, but Jim was happy to do it.

A quick glance around the room made it clear which photos Chloe had been referring to when she met Babs. There were a half dozen on the wall, the first showing Jim cradling a baby, presumably Babs, then an almost identical picture every year until Babs was six. There were no pictures of Babs mother visible. The room did look tidy, the layout almost identical to Chloe's house. A sofa, an easy chair, and a coffee table was the furniture in the room.

Chloe, who had clearly been here many times, made a beeline for the fridge. "Root beer time. Want to make it a float?"" She asked.

Barbara listened as Chloe explained the rules as she knew them and nodded , smiling when she offered to show her where the spare was. "I would be surprised if he didn't do it himself, assuming he's not still in shock from me just essentially showing up on his doorstep unannounced."

Later in his house she smiled after she dumped all the information on him. She was amused to see that he was racing to catch up and realized she really had just blurted it all out. She thought back to all the events at Chloe's house and shrugged one shoulder. "She helped me and also reminded me I'll need to go bra shopping. I figure the two of you can go with me. You as, you know, the buyer and her to help with the more girly parts of it." She glanced at Chloe and subtly winked, wondering if the other girl remembered her joking request to go on such a trip so she could watch Captain Jim Gorden totally out of his element.

She watched Chloe make a beeline for the fridge and called after her. "Not this time, Pizza'll be here soon. I just need something refreshing to drink." She wandered closer to some of the pictures to look at them more closely. She reached out and trailed her fingerstips over one of the latest ones, remembering the day it was taken. She looked over her shoulder at her dad and smiled sadly. "I know there's a gap but maybe you'll be able to add new photos soon with a slightly older me in them. If you want."

“If he remembers that he has a spare. “ Chloe said with a roll of her eyes. It seemed the Captain spent so much time keeping Gotham in order, he often forgot about his own home.

The odds of him remembering plummeted sharply when he heard the word ‘bra’. “Ummmmm….” He was still trying to process the fact Babs had a date for the gala and wasn’t ready for that. Chloe, however, was totally on board and gave Babs a thumbs up in response. She didn’t respond to the request for a drink either, not wanting to interrupt the father/daughter/picture moment, but figured her actions would speak for themselves as she poured two glasses of root beer and one of coke into the Star Trek glasses she had gotten the Captain for Christmas last year.

Jim reached out and placed his hand on her shoulder, squeezing it gently. “Absolutely. “ he said softly, then chuckled lightly. “ Though we may have to change the pose a bit. “ he said. In all the current pictures, Jim was holding Babs cradled in his arms.

That proved unacceptable to Chloe however as she recognized a potential bonding moment for the pair. “Nonsense. “ she claimed with a laugh as she got out her phone. “You just need to sit on the couch, and she can sit in your lap. “ she pointed out as she brought up the camera app on her phone.

Barbara bit her lip to keep from grinning as she saw how her dad reacted to the bra shopping proposal. She saw now why Chloe had cheekily suggested it and she began to feel a bit sorry for her dad, thinking he might regret having introduced them. She wondered if he'd just give them some cash and shoo them away to do the shopping or bite the proverbial bullet.

She smiled when he replied about the picture and laughed at his joking about the pose. "Well, I think something like us standing next to each other with sort of awkward smiles like every family photo ever works." She blinks as Chloe pipes up and adds her own suggestion, her cheeks flushing slightly but she decides to play along, figuring Chloe is just trying to get a rise out of one or both of them. "Well, I'm up for it if dad is. What do you think dad?"

Jim wasn't normally one to avoid a situation, but when it came to his teenage daughter and her fiend talking about bras, that warranted an exception. So he was more than happy to have the subject change to awkward family photos. Standing next to Babs with an awkward smile on his face sounded fine to him, but it seemed Chloe wasn't going to let them get away with that. Jim thought Babs was going to strike the idea of her sitting in his lap down, but it seemed she was up for it. And Jim was not going to be known as a party pooper, or whatever it was kids called a wet blanket these days. "Sounds good." Jim agreed with a nod and a grin as he moved to sit on the couch. "Never too old to sit in Dad's lap, I guess." He stated, wondering if Babs would feel the same way. Chloe, for her part, could not stop grinning. She was going to want a copy of this photo as well, if all went well.

Barbara had been sure her dad would say absolutely not but when he didn't she found herself trapped much like he had before her. She watched him move to the couch then moved to follow. After a moments debate she sat across his lap, one arm wrapped around his neck as she looked at Chloe.

"Is this good?" She plastered a smile on her face as she waited for Chloe to snap the picture."

Jim didn't have to force a smile onto his face as Babs settled into his lap and put an arm around his neck. Sure, she was a little...a lot...heavier than last time they had done this, but that wasn't a surprise. He HAD forgotten that she was wearing what he hoped were bikini bottoms and not just underwear, but he put that thought out of his mind. At least he was wearing pants, so it wasn't a problem. He smiled down at Babs as another thought occurred to him. Was she still ticklish? When she was a baby, he could often reduce her to laughter simply running his fingers along her ribs, so he decided to try it again. He raised his hand up, and lightly ran them over her side.

Chloe, for her part, simply grinned as her plan went into effect, and she had the phone on burst mode, not wanting to miss a second of this. So whatever Babs reaction to the tickling was, it would all be caught on camera.

She held the smile for as long as she could and was about to ask Chloe if she had taken any pictures yet when she felt a teasing touch along her ribs. She stiffened and the smile turned into a lip bite as he ran his hand along her ribs. She realized what he was trying to do but her skin had changed since she was a child and what was once purely ticklish was now sensitive to the touch. His touch was light enough that it was right on the border between ticklish and extremely pleasant and she looked at him and then at Chloe.

"Chloe, uh...did you take any pictures?" She wiggled slightly in his lap as that touch sent shivers right on the edge of tickling along her spine.

Jim couldn't help but let out a small sigh at Bab's complete lack of reaction, at least as far as he could tell, to his tickling. That used to reduce her to giggles. That, more than the fact his daughter now needed a bra, somehow drove into him how much she had changed, and how much he had missed out on over the years. It didn't help that she was making sure Chloe got the picture, with the implication she wanted to get up as soon as possible. She used to fall asleep in his arms...not anymore. He dropped his hand with disappointment as Chloe answered.

"Got it." She promised. Jim's expression, from years of practice on the force, completely impassive as Chloe put her phone down right as the doorbell rang. "I've got it." Chloe said as she took two steps to the door and opened it, sure it was the pizza guy. Sure enough, it was, and as Chloe (or rather Jim with Chloe's help) had had already paid for it, the exchange took little time at all and Chloe then walked into the kitchen with the pizza box. She placed it on the table and with the ease of someone who had done this many times before, got out the plates and napkins and began setting the table.

She heard her dad's sigh and while Chloe answered the door she turned and impulsively kissed him on the cheek, whispering. "It sort of tickled but you know how us teenagers are. We don't like to let that stuff show and look like little kids." She gave him a playful wink and a tight hug before she got up.

She waited for him to stand then moved towards the kitchen, seeing Chloe setting the table and without having to ask where anything was. She smiled even as she felt a slight twinge of irrational jealousy. She was surprised to feel a surge of anger at her mother. She didn't know stuff like where her dad had his plates because of her mother and she glanced at him, feeling guilty even if it wasn't her fault that her mother had taken her away. She moved to one of the chairs and sat down, smiling at the other two. "Shall we?"
