    Prologue: June 10th, 2046

Earth wasn't dying, but it was certainly doing its best to kill off the latest infestation of creatures that were making uninhabitable to even its own kind. While the uneducated masses told themselves they would adapt, the highest echelons of science knew better, or at least they thought they knew. So the Resolute was built and the careful selection of families was made to ensure humanity would survive. The cost for each family was almost unimaginable, few would be able to afford it themselves, so corporate and governmental interests conspired to test and select only the best and the brightest families with the most potential for renewing the human race beyond the reaches of Earth's star system.

Each family unit was housed in a short range Jupiter space craft which was capable of orbital travel and landing on the host planet, Alpha Prime. The Jupiter craft would also serve as their homestead until more permanent homes and buildings could be produced locally. Each Jupiter included a Chariot land rover along with various other options and amenities. The 70 short range Jupiters of the initial colonization were housed and transported by the Resolute through interstellar space. The crew of the Resolute were not selected to be colonists and would return with the Resolute for the next wave. At least that was the plan.

The first indication anything was wrong was an alarm blaring and announcement for "all colonists to return to their Jupiters immediately". Before many of them could make it, explosions rocked the Resolute, throwing people to the deck and adding to the chaos. There was no time to lose as parents frantically did head counts before initiating the emergency separation programs of their Jupiters which were now life boats for the doomed Resolute.

When all was said and done, only 3 Jupiters survived, 3 families out of 70 and they were no where near Alpha Prime. Fortunately, they were close enough to a star with nearly a half dozen planets, and 2 dozen moons. It was the last act of the Resolute bridge crew, to get them a chance at survival, not just for them but perhaps for all of humanity. Now if only one of the planets or moons was habitable, they might have that chance.

    A New Plan:

The smallest planet, and one of the larger moons, looked promising from orbit. In the end it was decided there was enough fuel to land and take off from the moon but the planet would be a one way trip. They opted to try their luck on the moon with the planet being a backup if things couldn't work. There appeared to be plant life though animals couldn't be directly imaged. The atmosphere was friendly enough, at 23% oxygen, combined with a slightly lower gravity than Earth they would actually all likely feel a bit of spring in their steps, perhaps literally.

The three remaining Jupiters landed on a vast grass plain in a triangular pattern each about a mile distant from one another. To the east was a thick forest with potential for some diverse animal life if they were fortunate. While the immediate question of survival was of prime importance, the weight of perpetuating the human race still hung heavy on the heads of the three families.

    Meeting Starts - Early Evening
  • Who: dr. Smith
    Where: Robinson Jupiter
    Relevant: @Motoharu (Judy Robinson)

"Yes. Something similar. We have to think of the next generations, the sooner the better, while we can still teach them our level of technology, and it is still working. But there is also another concern. Do you remember how often people could not live with whoever they choose? And what it was like trying to date? There was a lot of people you could choose from, and if it does not worked, then you could just choose another, and wouldn't have to live with the previous one... I am all for lifelong choices, but we are still human. If we keep to the family structure we started out with, we just can't make this work even medium term. What I see, there would be two choices, but living like a big family does not work without outside tribes. So, the other choice is some kind of commune, but that rarely works without strict rules. While I have faith in everyone doing their best to keep us living, the genetic problem need us to follow every lineage very strictly. There must be some incentive, so, I propose that while we have to give every female and male a pool to choose from, whoever successfully gets pregnant could open to people not in her pool. But we also have to strictly prohibit anyone with confirmed fertility to keep away from his or hers pool of people. There is another thing. For this to work, nobody can stop with just one partner. Neither can we let anyone stop with just one pregnancy either.... Fortunately we can follow nature, and give this some time... Unless you came to a different conclusion?"

    Where: The Robinson’s Jupiter
    Relevant: The adults

After she gave the punch and the planned welcome for everyone, dr. Smith nodded towards Judy Robinson, and started.
"Welcome everyone, again. We choose to adress the people who are considered adults by our old culture first, but we have to speak with the whole colony. There are facts, and there will be different feelings and thoughts, but unfortunately not much choice. I will be blunt. We are it. While we can hope to have other colonists turn up, or to get off this moon and search the remnants in space, the only other place we can try to find a future is on the planet. And that is one way, for now. So, I ask all of you to keep an open mind, and hear out what Dr. Robinson is most concerned with about the future."

Zoe turned to Judy, smiling, but it was obvious that she just threw her to the wolves here. Not that she wouldn't help her, and dr. Smith did have some more ideas to share, but first the doc had to drop the bomb. Hopefully Catherine and Allen Stevensen would see the truth in Judy's words. If not, well, they would need some extra talking to.

Meeting Begins to Break - Evening
  • Who: Allen
    Where: Robinson Jupiter
    Who Else: Everyone, @MsBloom (Kat)

In spite of how absolutely insane the entire thing was, Allen couldn’t help but breach the stony facade of his facial expression with a hint of a grin as Kat told Dr. Smith just what she thought about their “frequency of intercourse”. At least they were on the same page.

He let her hand go, only to cross to the punch bowl and pour a second cup. He returned to her at the front door of the Jupiter, and handed her the cup. He touched his own to here in a mock toast, and tipped it back until there was nothing left. He waited for her to do the same. “I’ll have to disagree... there’s nothing left to discuss” he told them, voice tinged with a certain finality. He took his wife’s hand in his again, and led them out to their Chariot.

He took the drivers seat this time, one hand on the wheel, the other on his wife’s thigh, as if that gesture alone could protect her from everything that was going on. As they rolled over the terrain, halfway home, he finally felt himself relax some, the choking tightness in his chest easing. “So... three times a day huh?” He said to her, raising an eyebrow in an attempt to put the discomfort of the meeting behind them.

The Need to Breed: June 20th, 2046

As extraordinary as the breeding plan was, the survival instinct of those chosen for the original colony kicked in, and most would come around to it. Key was the family matriarchs and patriarchs who simply didn't see any alternative if their bloodline, not to mention humanity itself were going to survive. Some of the younger members had a bit more resistance, if that were the right word for it, conditions might be better. There were certainly hints of enthusiasm, especially among the males who suddenly had the whole problem of finding a mate taken from them. One thing the younger members did agree upon was that sweet little Mei, still unsure of her own sexuality, would be given time to come to grips with the arrangement. Not excused entirely, but delayed with hopes that some time with Dr. Smith might help her come to accept her fate. Dr. Smith, having convinced at least Dr. Judy Robinson that she was infertile, was left out of the program as well, though there were some that had their doubts about Dr. Smith, on many levels.

Maureen Robinson, not wanting her daughter Judy to take the brunt of any resistance or hostility, not the least of which from her younger daughter Penny, led the next meeting. Maureen explained how they had located information on animal husbandry from the O'Donnell's library, and some articles on earth zoo species preservation programs from one of the youngster's library to come up with a plan for them. It wasn't exactly flattering to be compared with cattle and monkeys, but it did lend a certain dispassionate voice to decisions that were fraught with too much passion. In the end, each of them received on the electronic devices a set of rules, as simple and straightforward as they could be made:

    Rules of Breeding
    1. All colonists 16 years or older shall be assigned a breeding partner based on the genetic needs of the colony.
    2. All female colonists shall make themselves available to their breeding partner at all points during their fertile cycle as determined by medical staff.
    3. No colonist may have reproductive sex with anyone but their designated breeding partner. Other forms of intimacy are allowed provided fertility or virility are unaffected.
    4. Counseling is available through Dr. Smith if needed.
    5. Failure to follow these rules shall result in banishment from the colony.
The last one was perhaps the most controversial, but there was no other way to make the rules stick. It was all about survival.

They all knew it was coming so discussion of the rules quickly led to the big question for everyone, who. With a few keystrokes, each members electronic device was sent a single name, the name of that person's breeding partner for the original pairings. Looks were quickly exchanged, some looked immediately to their partner, others first looked to their spouse or sibling or perhaps another. They could share the information if they chose, but that was up to them. Obviously each partner knew the other at this point. As difficult as the meeting was, it was the easy part, now they needed to make it work.
