Senka Deshinov looked somewhat disconnected with the world as she walked around the camp. The snow fell down slowly from the heavens, occasionally landing on her but she didn't mind, she liked the snow, expect when it was stained with the blood of fallen comrades and enemies. She looked about herself; everyone else was probably in their quarters or in the mess hall. She sighed to herself her hot breath creating a mist in the coldness of the outside air. She walked over to one of the snow covered benches. Clearing away some of the gather snow she made a place for herself to sit.

She sat down gently on the bench and leaned back in the chair and looked up at the sky. She wasn't the only women at this camp, but offcourse in the army the men would always outnumber the women. She wasn't a front line solider, no. That "privilege" was only given to the men and with good reason. She was a sniper in the Russian army. At first she had worked alone, having no partner with her on tasks and missions. She was probably one of the best snipers in the army, or at least this camp, with a confirmed 77 kills. The men had taken to calling her "Hawk Eye". However most of them stayed away from her as she was cold and disconnected, it seemed, of having any emotions. The men saw this as somewhat irrie. Pretty soon the high ranking officials got word of it and assigned her a partner for some sort of companion ship and perhaps a vent for any emotions that she had. So far it hadn't really helped. She'd manage to crack a smile or to, or chuckle once in awhile but not much else. Still, they considered that her psychological health was at a higher standard than it had ever been before and to this day she still had a partner.

Why had she joined the fight in the first place? Women tended not to be known for their service on the battle field. The Russian army was one of the first to allow women to join their ranks. When the war fist began, the Nazi's had invaded her town. The burnt the whole town to the ground and slaughtered all the men of their village right before their eyes. Even the smallest of male children were spared. Any women that objected was captured and most likely raped. Those that kept their mouths shut, lived and escaped. She was one of those. She had managed to escape with a few other women, however once they had escaped, they had nowhere to go. So instead of standing around waiting for the Germans to capture the again, they ran to the nearest army base. They were given food and shelter and offered the chance to join the fight. They were probably the easiest people to enlist. The hurt they felt in their hearts would have them lust for vengeance. The out of the 7 that had escaped, 4 of them joined, including her. The rest were sent back to safe areas of the country to begin new lives.

The 4 of them grew very close. They were all trained in how to use a sniper rifle, and a hand gun. They learnt tactics, how to move around silently and other skills that would assist them. Then they were shipped of with other female soldiers to the camp they were in now. During this time, the four of them had grown quite close. Their reasons for joining were one in the same after all. Senka had lost her father, brother and Fiancé in the bloody massacre. She and her mother were the only ones left in their family. She and her mother had escaped with the 7 women. Her mother now resided in Moscow, working as a seamstress.

Senka sighed to herself. She was dressed in her military uniform, designed to combat the harsh Russian winter. Her red hair was up in a messy bun and stuff up inside her fury woollen cap. Her uniform was marked with a few decals, denoting her rank of lieutenant. Her uniform consisted of a large over coat, then a jacket, a shirt, a pair of thick trousers and black boots. Hardly faltering, however that was not its purpose. Its purpose was to keep her alive in the cold.

Looking around, she wondered exactly where her partner had actually run off to. He was probably inside stuffing his face as usual. She sighed a little and looked at the snow falling making her content once more. She reached inside her shirt and pulled out a ring on a chain. It was her engagement ring, only simple in design, but what it represented way the complete opposite. It was made of a sliver band with a large green stone in the middle and smaller white ones around it. He had told her he had chosen green because he loved her eyes. She held it in her gloved hands for a moment, her mind drifting back to those somewhat happy days before the war, in a somewhat blissful state for a moment. However, footsteps approaching made her quickly put it away from view once more and she was back in reality, in the cold snow.

A soft sigh escaped the lips of the lieutenant, watching as the smoke passed through and upwards at the sky. He returned his cigarette to his mouth, took a deep drag, and breathed the smoke out through his nose. Things were going by pretty slow in the baseâ?¦ Not like Desya was complaining, of course. It wasnâ??t like he was waiting on baited breath for the next chance to throw his life on the battlefield, looking for any excuse to fightâ?¦ but with each day of inactivity, the thought seemed more and more appealing.

The war was beginning to be a bit drawn out, if you asked him. Damn Germans had to not only throw off the balance of the entire damn globe, but took a long time doing so. Had Russia ever started a campaign like that, the war would have been fought and won by yearâ??s end. But oh well. There was no use in complaining or thinking about it. Not a soldier here would turn an ear to a man whose words were mere bellyaching- least of all, his partner. Senka Deshinov. God, that woman was an iceberg. He could recall the first time they met- he looked at her as if she were a diamond in a coal mine and she looked at him as if she would kill him in his sleep. And for a while, he somewhat believed that. That womanâ??s attitude was colder than the Russian winters they learned to endure and most men from the base kept away from her. There were a rare few who were brave enough to approach the sniper, but soon learned to stay away. Desya supposed they were given the same treatment he was given upon their first encounter. When he learned that they were to work as partners, he was a bit nervous- not so much at the fact that he had to work with the iciest being on the base, but- how the hell was he going to communicate and work with a partner who barely acknowledged his existence?

It was a bit rough, at first. Heâ??d scout out the area and set up tracks and traps to corral troops within Senkaâ??s sight and that would be all there was to it. He did his job, and she did hers. Desya tried to get her to warm up to him. Heâ??d sometimes ignore her obvious tell-signs to get him to go away and heâ??d persist. Crack a few jokes, evenâ?¦ which often didnâ??t rouse much of a response for her. But the rare grin or chuckle that resulted seemed to be enough to keep him trying.

â??Desya, put that damn thing out or smoke outside. I want to eat without your smoke in my face,â? one of the soldiers huffed. The male responded with an apologetic grin, pushing the cap that the complaining soldier wore down so that his eyes were covered before standing up and heading out.

Desya Iakov was an ideal soldier- tall, and well-built. He had his fatherâ??s genes to thank for thatâ?¦ not to mention the intense training all soldiers had to put themselves through at their initiation into the army. He came from a family of soldiers- for as long as his family history existed, a son was in service to the czar. He was the eldest of four- three sons and a daughter. Only two of the three sons enlisted in the army- the youngest son was an intellect and the daughter, only fourteen years of age. You could say he fought for their safety as well. His russet hair was kept somewhat short- a bit shaggy and a little past his earsâ?¦ but it was hidden for the most part under the military-issued fur cap.

He gave a small huff as he exited the warmth of the cafeteria, passing through the doors into the wintery air. Gray-blue eyes shifted to gaze around his whitened surroundings before his focus settled on his partner. Solitary, as usual. A knowing grin crossed his features as he made his way over to her. She probably wanted to be alone and would make that obvious as soon as he approached herâ?¦ but heâ??d kindly ignore it, as usual.

He walked over, seating himself on the bench beside her. A hint of his grin still played upon his features, looking out at the falling snow and then back at Senka. â??Anything interesting out here, or are you just avoiding me again?â?

Senka looked up to see who was coming. It was none other than her partner. She looked at him with an expressionless look on her face as he walked around and sat next to her. Senka heard his question and for a moment she said nothing in reply. She then breathed in and said "Watching the snow fall is far more peaceful than the babble of voices inside the mess hall". She then said "and yes, if you must know, I was seeking some relief from that odour of cigarette smoke that you seem to carry everywhere" she said grimacing for a moment before sighing.

She breathed out, her hot breath evaporating in the cold again and she looked over at him for a moment before she looked down at the snow. She remembered when she was a child, how she and the other children would make snow men and angles and throw snowballs at each other. The only thing that mattered then was just the next thing you were going to do to have fun. There was no war to think about, nothing to be afraid of. A part of her missed those times. Had the war never come, she might be in a very different place.

She most certainly would not be sitting next to Desya in the snow, and would probably be far away from a military camp that was for sure. She might have even been happily married, perhaps with a child. However the war was a harsh teacher. It stomped out any naive thoughts you may have once had, it showed that man could be his own worst enemy. It showed the cruel acts that people were capable when placed in a position of hate for another. The war taught you how to survive in the worst of times.

She then looked over at him and said "Do you miss it, your home?" she asked him. She asking him something was very unusual. Most of the time he would be the ones asking the questions, trying to get her to talk to him. She looked at him, an inquisitive look on her round face. She looked away from him a little and said â??Do you ever, miss your family?â? she asked him looking down in the snow once again.

Cold, as usual. Youâ??d think that heâ??d be suffering from frostbite after hanging around her so much. He was a strange sort of man- almost like a dog, even. The more you yelled at him, the more he would want to come back and make you happy with him. Despite her jabs at him, Desya continued to grin slightly, puffing away at his cigarette. â??Well, youâ??ve got to eat sometimeâ?¦ or do you just snipe out your food and cook it, yourself?â?

He gave a small roll of his eyes at the comment she made about his cigarette. Jeez, heâ??d think that being surrounded by soldiers, no one would really give a damn about smoke. It wasnâ??t like it was the most dangerous or unpleasant thing they had to endure. However, he refused to waste a good cigarette. Instead, he flicked out the embers into the snow and stuffed it back into a small, metal case full of other cigarettes. Heâ??ll just save that for later. â??Happy?â? Sheâ??d probably never be satisfied with anything he did.

Desya took off his hat for a moment to scratch the back of his head slightly. Ugh, now what was he going to do without a cigarette? By this point, he was a chain smoker and if he didnâ??t have a cigarette between his lips, he needed to find something- anything- to keep himself occupied so he wouldnâ??t be tempted to stick another in his mouth. He placed the fur cap back upon his head, contenting himself with twiddling his thumbs and tapping his foot lightly against the snow.

Now, he expected silence, which usually followed him greeting her. Heâ??d say something, sheâ??d say something backâ?¦ thereâ??d be a long, awkward silence until Desya would come up with another comment to which Senka would either give another comment or ignore him. So when she started a conversation, he was quite surprised. Plus, all the conversations he had were usually banters. Nothing serious. So for her to come out with a question like this was strange but still welcome.

â??Of course I do,â? he said bluntly, â??Everyone does. Itâ??s human.â? He leaned back a little, thoughts drifting to little Liza, his youngest sibling. She cried the day he left. He fished in his chest pocket for a moment before withdrawing a doll barely two inches tall, showing it to her. It was small, flat, and a little misshapen. â??My little sister made me this for good luck. Thereâ??s not a day that goes by that I donâ??t think of them all.â? There was a short pause before asking, â??What about you?â?

Senka looked over at him as he spoke. She listened and watch him fish out a doll from his pocket. She looked at it for a moment. It was a cute little thing, only small and insignificant to others but she knew it symbolized a whole lot more to Desya. She made no comment about the small doll. She looked down for a moment and closed her eyes for a moment, thinking to her self it seemed.

Her thoughts were interrupted by his question. She opened her eyes and looked at him and said "Yes..I do...but when the war ends, there is no home for me to return to" she said. She knew the higher ups had shown him her file when he was partnered with her, she wasn't stupid. He would probably know about the details of her past and how she came to join the armed forces. She looked at him and said "I don't miss home, I miss the times before the war, the times when in the winter you could have snowball fights and not have to worry about air raids and ...when we all had the naive notion of a dream we aspired for one day and we knew, one day, we would get there. Then the war came and like a fly, those dreams were squashed by a big black booted foot" she said in a cold tone.

She looked down at her hand for a moment and said "We walk this earth together, and yet we still kill each other, rape each others women with no remorse. Why? Because everyone has a dream, it just so happens the bad guys are getting what they want this time" she said. She looked at the snow and sighed a little.

"The snow is peaceful, till it turns red..." she muttered to her self.

Of course, he knew about her history. Before they were partnered for good, they gave him all the dirty, little secrets about her past. It even included her dead fiancé, which in Desyaâ??s mind, was a bit of too much information. A simple background was all that was necessary- but the military seemed to want to know and share all of its soldiersâ?? life stories. He wasnâ??t sure if Senka was aware of how detailed her files were, but he wasnâ??t going to ask. He was dense, but not stupid.

â??There are places in the world that still have snowball fights and children without worry. Just because it isnâ??t here doesnâ??t mean it doesnâ??t exist anymore,â? he replied, â??Itâ??s just our job to return things back to normal in our own home. Of course, it will never be like the way it was before. But eventually, it will return to normal. Youâ??ve still got your mother. Iâ??m sure she misses you and when the war is over, you should go to her. Youâ??re the only family sheâ??s got.â? Of course, although he knew her history, he wasnâ??t able to understand the depth. Senka had been through hell and back. Desya didnâ??t know the pain of the loss she had to suffer

â??You know, youâ??re not innocent to those crimesâ?¦Iâ??m not, either. Everyone is a bad guy to someone. Think of all the men youâ??ve killed. The ones Iâ??ve killed. Most of them have families. A wife and kid of their own. What did those kids do to deserve their father to be taken away from them? Just like your dreams were crushed by them, you crush theirs with your own hands as well. As do I.â?

Desya sighed, shaking his head a bit. â??Snowâ??s always peaceful. Colorâ??s got nothing to do with it.â?

Senka heard him speak and said "I never said I was innocent of such crimes Desya, and I wasn't talking about fighting on the battlefield, more the massacre of civilians" she said with a hint of disgust in her voice. She paid no heed to his very last comment, she wasn't about to get into an argument with him over nothing, specially so early in the morning.

She stood up and said "I'm going to go get something to eat before they stop serving breakfast" and slowly began to make her way back inside. She walked in through the wooden doors of the hall and passed the rows of soldiers and moved to the front. There she grabbed whatever they were giving out today, usually it as a stew or brought of some kind.

She walked away with her bowl and moved over to the side and sat with some of the females who were chatting about one thing or another, a topic that Senka cared not to delve into at this point in time. All she did was focus on getting her food down. It warmed up her insides as she had been sitting out in the cold for sometime now.

Then one of her closest friends here on the camp, Aleksandra, she just called her Aleks, spoke to her.

"Senka, you seem awfully quite today"

Senka just looked at her and said "When am I never quite"

"No today it's different, more than usual, did something upset you?" she asked

"Don't worry about is Aleks, It's nothing"

"Alright then, if you won't tell me" she said with a shrug.

Hmph. She didnâ??t even give him time to explain himself. Instead, she just stormed off, leaving him nothing else to say to her. Typical woman. Desya huffed slightly, withdrawing the metal tin of cigarettes and lighting up once more. The once chance he had to really have a conversation with her was ruined now. He wasnâ??t sure when the opportunity would come up again, but by the anger and disgust in her voice, it didnâ??t seem like sheâ??d forgive him enough to talk to him any time soon. It wasnâ??t his fault that her family got slaughtered. It wasnâ??t like he was excusing the murder of civilians. But hell, she hardly gave him a chance to say anything before going off on him.

â??Eh,â? he muttered, giving a small shrug of his shoulders. It wasnâ??t like this was the first time she had given him attitude for little reason, though this time was a bit more justified than others. He didnâ??t think too much of it.

It wasnâ??t much longer later that one of the higher-ups spotted him out, giving him an order that at nightfall, he and Senka would have to set out on another sniping mission. Ugh, he hated scouting in the dark but at least it guaranteed him some more safety. He was given some paperwork on their target and was asked to relay it to his partner. Sheâ??d probably bite his head off if he went up to her so soon after their disagreement, so he loitered for a few minutes before going to the mess hall. She usually sat with the other women, so it didnâ??t take too long for him to pick her out of the crowd. He sidled over to the group, pulling away her tray of food and placing the paperwork in front of her. â??Your new target.â?

Senka hadn't noticed her partner come into the mess hall, right now foo and a full stomach was the first thing on her mind. So when someone suddenly puled her food away from her she almost cried out in protest like some child that had just been refused a treat. However her eyes caught the paper work first and she proceeded to skim over the details, she'd read it in full a little later.

"Tonight I see, Some notice they give us" she muttered.

Aleks looked over and said "They're sending you out on your own again, just the two of you, better be careful, don't get your head blown off" she said.

Senka looked at her and said " We'll come back, We always do" she said.

She put the file away inside her coat and once more food was back on the agenda. "Thank you desya, for the file" she said to him as she ate. It sounded like the so called "fight" they had , had never even occurred. She could switch moods in an instant making her a very hard person to read. She looked at Aleks ad said "Do you know when they'll send you out?" she asked

She replied with a single "Nope", Senka sighed.

Desya shrugged slightly, propping his elbow on the table and resting his chin in the palm of his hand. â??Itâ??s not like you had a candlelight dinner planned for tonight, anyways,â? he teased. But at the same time, trekking through snow and woods wasnâ??t as appealing as getting a good nightâ??s rest in a warm bed. Well, as good of a nightâ??s rest in as warm of a bed as a soldier could get, that is.

His gaze shifted to Aleks when she spoke, listening patiently to the two women talk. Strange, she was the only person that Senka seemed to tolerate well enough to talk with regularly. Desya couldnâ??t help but feel a little envious, knowing that she was comfortable with talking to Aleks but not with her own partner. But on the other hand, he could understand that. Women had their own natural connection and pouring their hearts out to each other was a lot easier than talking to a man. A small grin appeared upon his features once again. The thought of Senka pouring her heart out to anyone seemed far-fetched in itself.

â??Hopefully, theyâ??ll give us time for dinner, first.â?

Senka heard his comment about dinner and she seemed sigh for a moment to her self and continued to eat while Aleks gave her a somewhat cheeky grin. Senka just rolled her eyes and looked back down at her food and began to spoon up the last of her soup.

Senka then pushed the tray away a little from her and she pulled the file out once again and began to read the file more thoroughly this time. She had to , well they had ti take out a higher ranking member of the German army to cause some disconnection in their ranks. She looked up at Desya and said "You know what you have to do right" she said to him.

She stood up for a moment and said "I'm going to start getting ready, I'll see you two later" she said. She then turned and began to walk swiftly down the rows of tables and back outside into the snow. She turned in the direction of her own quarters. She pushed open her tent flap and she walked over to the sink and washed her face. She took of her overcoat and put in on the bed and sighed to her self. She'd spend this time memorizing the file and prepping her self for the field.

Desya considered himself lucky. To be honest, Senka did most of the work in the mission. As scout-spotter, all the guy had to do was find the ideal place to set up, know an escape route, and make sure that their target will pass through their line of fire. After that, all that was left was looking through a scope for their target if eye fatigue ever plagued his partner. But that part never came. That woman was like steel and it seemed as if the day she would ever let any mortal ailments affect her would never come.

He gave a small chuckle at her question before replying, â??Donâ??t I always?â? The man fell silent as she left, giving a small nod of his head to acknowledge her leaving. Desya would rather not trail her around like a pup. Although she always tended to be alone, she always seemed even more anxious for solitude whenever she was preparing herself for a mission.

Instead, his gaze shifted over to Aleks, shrugging his shoulders slightly. â??Sheâ??s so wound up. That woman never relaxes.â?

Aleks watched Senka leave and she looked over at Desya with her brown eyes and said " Do you really blame her? We only met up in training, but we both know what happened to her. All the other women from that place are the same as her, Quite and solitary, all four of them" she said.

Aleks sighed and said "Just take care of her, it's your job" she said looking at him sternly for a moment.

Senka was sitting on her bed looking down at the file in her hands, memorizing every minute detail. Her face was scrunched up in a look of concentration as she did. After having committed the entire file to memory she got up and left the file on her bed before she walked out of her tent. She then sat outside one more, repeating the entire files contents to her self making sure she knew every little detail..

Well, she did have a point. If Desya had his entire family massacred, he wouldnâ??t be bubbly, either. But hell, it was as if Senka had no feelings. Although he knew that was far from the case, her actions were so coarse that he couldnâ??t help but think that she wasnâ??t giving this new style of life a fair chance. It was as if she was using the military as an excuse to live- a thing to do to make up for the abrupt emptiness. It was probably the case.

â??Yeah, yeah,â? he muttered, dismissing the thought with the wave of his hand. â??On a mission, our lives are tied. If she dies, I die.â? Desya managed a playful grin despite the sternness in her tone and the obvious distaste in his attitude, â??And I rather like living.â?

With that, he stood up and headed to the line to get his rations- he already ate, but he was still allowed a hot drink. He usually only got it just to hold and warm his hands up- they only served tea and he wasnâ??t particular to it. Once given the mug, he left the tent to walk to Senkaâ??s quarters, but found her absent. After a bit of walking around, he managed to find her. The tea was a bit cooler by then, but still warm. Desya sat down beside her, offering the tea. â??You may not be able to get anything warm the next few days. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts.â? After all, a sniping mission could last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Weeks, even.

Senka heard footsteps approaching once more but she ignored as she recited the files contents in her mind. She was interrupted by him when he held out the mug of tea. She knew he wouldn't shut up if she didn't take it so she just took the mug of him and said a quite "Thanks" she took a sip of it just to please him for the time being.

She looked down at the snow again and began to recite the files contents in her mind before he closed her eyes trying to remember the face of the man that they had to go and kill now. She remembered his face. It was imparative that she knew what their target looked like.

She sighed a little to her self and she looked at him for a moment before looking up at the sky. She closed her eyes before she looked at him and wondered what he did before missions. She wondered but she didn't ask.

The soldier inhaled deeply, wondering whether it was worth it or not to try and talk to her. Of course, Desya had no problem babbling for hours to anyone who was willing to sit in front of him and endure his never-ending monologue. And at the same time, he was always willing to listen, as well. However, he didnâ??t want to disrupt Senka too much. He was never the type of guy who recognized or acknowledged personal bubbles or privacy. If he got yelled at, so be it. At least he wasnâ??t letting opportunities go by.

He rubbed at his chin a bit, gazing over at the other. Oh well. He already pushed his luck with her so many times, what was another attempt? â??What do you plan on doing once the warâ??s over?â?

Senka looked back at him when he spoke to her once more. She thought for a moment "I don't know, I might go to my mother in Moscow...but other than that, I have no other plans". She looked down again. "I might go back home and give the dead a proper burial ceremony and mark their graves" she said. The german would have just dumped all their boddies in a mas grave. No markings, no ceremony, nothing. She would honor them.

She looked at him and said "What about you?" she asked him curious. he would probably go back home to his family. He had one that was not dismantled to go back to. She only had her mother, and she was growing older. The war would take it's toll on her and pretty soon Senka would be alone.

She looked down at the snow and began to dig a hole with her foot out of boredom really. For a few hours she would have nothing to do. When it got later into the day they would have to change, go to the armory, pick up some supplies and perhaps some dinner before they would be transported.

Desya smiled a bit. â??Thatâ??s good. Do you right to your mom at all?â? However, a confused look crossed his features. A proper burial? He had never been to a funeral- both of his parents were alive and his grandparents died before he was bornâ?¦ and all their family friends were in good health. â??Whatâ??s the point in that?â? He questioned, raising an eyebrow. â??By then, thereâ??ll be no bodies left and theyâ??re long dead, anyways.â? Tactless as ever.

The male gave a small shrug and said, â??I dunno. Go back home, I guess. But besides that, itâ??s all up in the air.â? He may retire from the military- no point in serving for two wars in a lifetime. However, he didnâ??t know what sort of job heâ??d pick up in place of service to the country. His dad tailored. Maybe he could pick up the trade once he got back home.

He watched her idly as she continued to make a hole in the snow. â??Sucks, doesnâ??t it? They get you all excited to go on a mission and make you wait almost forever to set off.â? A soft chuckle escaped his lips, â??And yet they complain about lack of productivity.â?

Senka could not even believe the words that had come out of his mouth. Tactless was an understatement. She just rolled her eyes and said "Idiot" to her self , not even to him, just her self becouse she wasn't even bothered to insult him back. She heard what he wanted to. Seemed reasonable, half the soldiers here would do that to.

She continued digging a hole in the snow as her spoke to her. "Better not let them here you say that, they might replace you with someone else" she said smirking a little to her self. She sometimes wondered why they had chosen him. They had the entire Russian army to pick from, yet they had to choose the most annoying of the crop. Was this some kind of trick to get her to be suddenly happy and jolly? Well she was sorry to say that it would not be happening anytime soon. Not until those responsible for all of her sorry got what they deserved.

She looked down at the snow she had dug up and decided it was enough being silly and put the snow back into it's rightful place with her foot.

The soldier responded with a small grin at her comment. â??Iâ??m sure youâ??d like that, wouldnâ??t you?â? he teased, elbowing her in the side. He knew that he was a pain in the ass. Chatty, obnoxious, and always so god damn cheerful. Youâ??d think that he was at a playground instead of a warzone by the way he acted. â??Could you imagine a mission without me around? Youâ??d miss my charm and infectious charisma.â? Yet another attempt to get her to laugh. Smile. Anything.

His eyes lowered to the hole she was now filling up. The woman must be really bored. Desya waited for her to finish filling up the miniature crevice and just to be a scootch, began to re-dig the hole with his foot.

â??Iâ??ve always wanted to fall asleep in the snow. But at this temperature, I donâ??t think Iâ??d wake up if I did.â?

Senka hear his comment and she seemed to smile a little before she grinned and said "Hardly". Senka rolled her eyes when he was just being a pain in her backside and began to dig the hole again.

She heard his last comment and said "Oh believe me, You'd be doing the entire camp a favor" he said in a lighter tone, indicating she was joking, something rare to here. he chuckled a little to her self and sighed looking at the sky. She just hoped it didn't start storming tonight. No way she could snipe anything in a blizzard.

She looked over at him and said out of the blue, "Why do you try so hard with me?" she asked.

Woah, did she actually crack a joke? Desya was so surprised at the fact that she actually made a teasing comment at him that he hardly took it as an insult. He laughed a bit, shaking his head at her. â??All of Russia will mourn my absence,â? he replied, rolling his eyes. The male kicked the snow a bit, growing bored of just digging holes in the stuff.

Her question caught him a bit off guard, too. She seemed to be in a forgiving mood today. Not only was she actually smiling at his jokes, but she was actually talking to him, too. Not just at him. He couldnâ??t help but feel a bit proud of that.

He responded with a small grin. â??Well, somebody has to,â? Desya stated, shrugging his shoulders. â??Why do you try so hard to be tough? I know youâ??re a softie on the inside.â?

Senka grinned a little at his reply and she smiled a little at it. She sighed a little when he kicked the snow and looked up at the sky held out her hand, catching some of the snow in her glove. She looked at it for a moment before she droped down onto the floor,

Senka looked at him when he replied to her question. She saw his grin and she said and said "I'm not a softie, and I don't try either, I just am" she responded looking down at the hole he had dug. She began to fill it in again with her foot. "Your the softie around here" she said.

The look on Desyaâ??s face showed blatantly that he didnâ??t believe her answer. Sure, he was a bit of a mush but hell, he knew that she wasnâ??t as cold as she made herself out to be. There was no way a person could be born so detached with a need to be alone and unbothered by anyone and everyone.

His hand moved to the bit of the chain she wore that was exposed. Since her uniform covered most of it, the chain was only visible towards the back of her neck. He had seen her toy with it a few times when she thought he wasnâ??t looking. Even today, he had saw her holding it out and looking at it before he walked over. Desya gently tugged the rest of the chain out, exposing the engagement ring. He knew that he was probably crossing many lines with this action, but his face had a strange seriousness to it as he did so. Even when he spoke, it wasnâ??t in his usually, upbeat tone. It was a bit quieter. Softer, even. â??Youâ??ve got feelings beneath the shell youâ??ve made for yourself. Youâ??re just as human as the rest of us.â?

Senka wondered what in the world he was doing when he reached behind her neck. However when the metal on the inside of her shirt began to move she realized he had grabbed the chain she always saw. She looked at him with an expression of shock on her face. She was a little angry even. He had no right to do that. He probably knew how important ti was to her.

She looked at him as he spoke. She half expected him to make some stupid joke about it but he didn't and he was serious and somewhat kind to her. She looked away from him when he spoke and looked down at the snow. She said nothing to him, she was caught a little of guard by it and she seemed to be deeply moved by it. She even looked a little sad.
