Emily constantly spoke of devoting herself to the church and becoming a nun. Sammy constantly tried to write to Emily only to have her letters be sent back unopened and unread. She didn't let it bother her too much. She had other matters at hand. While in the doctors house, she educated herself in many different aspects that interested her. Like stars and the way people believed they could fortell the future. She smiled and thought about this when Miss Harper wasn't in her company or Nate wasn't giving her all the good loving that he could supply.

Sammy watched her stomach grow by the day and talked to her stomach once she knew she was pregnant. She stroked it and told it how even though she would not be keeping it she would be sending it to a couple who would make sure it would be properly fed and happy. She spoke to her stomach when she was sure it was in private. Pouring out all her feelings and emotions towards the child. Knowing that somewhere, deep in the forming brain, the child would understand. It was a suprising day when Dr. Carson came in and sought the companionship of Sammy. He wasn't a bad lover. She found that even though he had a strange smell that many of her other lovers didn't have about them, she loved the warmth and the soft skin of his hands. His hands were so very delicate but strong. It would be those hands that she remembered for a long time.

It was freezing cold when Sammy was sitting on her bed. It was in the middle of the night. She couldn't sleep. She sat looking at the moon. Gripping her stomach, she flinched and gasped leaning forward whimpering. She stood up and was about to call for help but something inside her released and suddenly she was drenched in water. Something in her began to panic and tears rolled down her face as she began to whimper. She had become so conscious of how she looked because she was so round and heavy with child. She whimpered and bit her lip trying to be quiet to avoid waking Old Nate. She gripped the wall as pain gripped her and she panted hard.
 
Sammy may have wished not to wake Nate, but he wasn't a heavy sleeper. He woke when Sammy was in pain, standing near the foot of the bed. Nate sat up, thinking that perhaps she was going to the bathroom. As the fogginess slipped away from his eyes. The older black man could see Sammy was going into labor. He'd seen the same thing when Aubrey went into labor when she visited. Nate leaped from the bed, rushing to Sammy's side. He was calling for Doctor Carson & Miss Harper. Both came running quickly and found Sammy was on her way to delivering the baby. Miss Harper started breathing like she'd seen her mother do before her baby brother was born. Sammy was taken downstairs to where the exam room was. There, she was have her child.

Once Sammy was up on the table, the doctor checked her over. She was dilated 10 centimeters. Doctor Carson was very pleased. He told Sammy to keep breathing as Miss Harper instructed her. When it came time to push, Miss Harper told the teenager. Nate stood off to the side, watching. He's been telling Sammy for weeks how beautiful she was. Sammy did look very sexy being pregnant. It only made her natural beauty standout. Doctor Carson & Miss Harper also spoke of how amazing the teenager looked. Her sexiness was enhanced by being with a child. The labor went on for several hours before Sammy gave birth. Doctor Carson checked the baby over after cutting the cord. He told Nate that the baby and Sammy were doing fine. Neither had any problems. He did say Sammy would be tired and sore for a while. So Sammy wouldn't be having sex for a few days. Once the baby was crying and wrapped in a blanket. Miss Harper carried it and placed the child in Sammy's arms. She may not be keeping the child, but she was it's mother.
 
Sammy began to breath as instructed. Her whole body ached. She was sweating and she gripped Old Nates hand, trying to hold and keep him close. But when he was obviously comfortable further away, she let him go. She bit her lip and shivered whimpering almost to herself, as if letting discomfort be known would null and void the sacred contract that all prostitutes had with the costumers.

She looked into the eyes of the little boy. She sighed. As if they both knew that he belonged to someone else and knew that like everything in Sammy's life, they silently regarded each other. Sammy sighed and stroked the childs face. He was a cute little boy. He looked a lot like Old Nate. He would carry on the name of the young couple who couldn't do so themselves. He would bring honor to them instead of living with the poor lifestyle Sammy did. Sure she wasn't ashamed of being a whore, but thanks to Dr. Carson, she didn't have to worry about starving while she was pregnant. She guided the child to her breast and let him feed as she stroked the childs head. She smiled at the soft mocha color of his skin and then looked up at Dr. Carson.

"I guess you have your answer, Dr. Carson."
 
The child was going to a good home. The new parents would arrive in about a week to pick the baby boy up. Until then, Sammy could get to know her son. The child would always be her son. Even if the boy was raised by other people. Old Nate couldn't have been happier. He never dreamed of having a child, let alone a boy. The older black man also never dreamed of getting a young white woman pregnant with his child. He was very happy with how things turned out. Nate knew the boy would go to a good home. Somewhere he could grow up happy. The boy would become the son of a doctor. A friend of Doctor Carson. This meant that even during these hard times. The boy would grow up in a home without want.

Doctor Carson smiled when Sammy spoke. He told Sammy to rest, let her son feed and enjoy what time she had with him. Doctor Carson said Sammy & Nate did a wonderful job. He was pleased with how the project turned out. He had a lot of information to go over. Doctor Carson would be writing a special paper on the subject for a medical magazine. The doctor left the room for the time being. He would return when it was time to take Sammy back upstairs. Miss Harper stood watching as the hungry baby boy was feeding. She congratulated both Sammy & Nate on having such a beautiful baby. In a perfect world, Sammy wouldn't have to worry about letting people know she & Nate were lovers, or that they had a baby together. This world was far from perfect, and certain truths were better left unspoken of. Sammy & Nate would always have great memories of being together and of the life they created. In time, Sammy was returned to her room, along with her new son. There was a bassinet placed next to her side of the bed. It was placed there by Doctor Carson.
 
She smiled and nuzzled her childs head and kissed his forehead gently when she was out of the sight of everyone else. She tried to be strong and silent. She stroked his face and looked into his eyes. Wondering if he would be the kind to buy whores, or the kind to settle down. She wondered of all the possibilities in his future. She kissed each of his little fingers and inhaled the fresh clean scent of him. It was Nate's precious gift to her. She nuzzled the boy and sighed softly. She remained awake and watched the baby sleep all through the night just touching the soft skin and reveling in everything that she and Nate had created. When she was sure the child was asleep and would not awake, she laid the baby in the bassenet and curled up into a ball close to Nate.

She kissed his cheek and shut her eyes and smiled and sighed softly and wondered what else her life would bring to her.
 
A black couple arrived a few days later. They were introduced as Doctor Alvin Richardson and his wife Dianna. They were a couple in their early 30's. Dianna couldn't have children. She was so happy that Sammy & Nate had agreed to have a baby for her and her husband. Dianna cried while kissing both of their cheeks. This was a great gift. Both Alvin & Dianna told Sammy if she ever wanted to see the baby. She was free to visit them. They made sure Sammy had their address in Los Angeles. The couple was moving there. Alvin was opening a new office in that area. The couple didn't plan on hiding the truth from the boy. He would know who his biological mother & father were. The Richardson's left with their new baby. Sammy & Nate stayed a could days longer. Doctor Carson was very happy and reward them with a longer stay and a little more cash.

Charlie returned to the doctor's house a few days later. He picked up Sammy & Nate for the trip back home. Doctor Carson spoke of how well both Sammy & Nate had done. He spoke of hoping to see Sammy again sometime in the future. The doctor had enjoyed his limited sexual time with Sammy. He was looking forward to being with her again, if that was possible. After their goodbyes. Charlie pulled the truck, heading for home.
