Dungeon of Bad Ends (Homebrew System)

With the ring in her hand, even through the cloth, Louella could hear distant echoes of screams, sobs, and moans of pleasure. A profound sense of shame began to encroach on her mind, though she remained strangely detached from it. It was someone else's emotion, not hers. But those sounds and feelings did not reveal any new power or purpose behind the trinket.

Scarlett, meanwhile, was examining a magical object of her own, and just as fruitlessly. So far, the control rune was just as it had been when the mayor had first turned it over to her--cool to the touch, a blue glow emanating from the magic sigil etched into the rock. It didn't give any insight into Kerrish's whereabouts or her current condition, but at least that meant it wasn't giving any particular sign that something had happened to her.

Scarlett and Louella approached the building cautiously; by now, everything was quiet, and through the open arch of the door they could see that everything was still. The interior was fairly well lit, though the light had a bright, violet hue that could not have come from torches or oil lamps. When they were close enough to peer into the room, they could see that it came from strange symbols inscribed on the walls.

They could also see the zombie that Kerrish had dragged away, now battered and unmoving. Only a few feet away from it was another corpse--not the dwarf's, but that of a giant spider, nearly as big as a human. It was on its back, its legs curled, though one seemed to be missing, the wound still sticky with ichor. With wounds so recent, it may well have been Kerrish's doing, but there was no sign of her. Only when Scarlett and Louella stepped into the room did a scratching sound draw their attention towards the ceiling. There, another spider crawled along the statuary carved high into the wall, dragging with it a webbed bundle about the size of a dwarf. It hauled its prize through a large hole that lay between two stone figures.

And with that, the room was still again, save for the two heroines. Long strands of thick web ran from the floor to the ceiling, but there didn't seem to be any more spiders, and with a little caution they were easily avoided. On the far side of the room were two closed doors.

---

Meanwhile, Cassie made her way back to the entrance. The city didn't seem to be shifting, at least, not yet, and she found her way without any trouble. The chamber was just how they'd left it: the door into the city still open, the doors leading out resolutely shut. The chain-wrapped corpse was still there, and the wounded dog had not yet made its escape.

The glowing vines were there too, save for the patch that Scarlett had cut away, and as Cassie stepped into the room she could feel particles of pollen settling on her skin, feel the now-familiar chill and the warmth that followed it. It was a mild sensation so far, nothing Cassie couldn't handle, but the longer she stayed in the chamber, the worse it would get.

So, seems we're splitting the party. As a reminder, here's how this works: once the groups are established, each group gets their own scene in a separate location. Neither group can start a new scene until both groups have finished theirs. When you are ready to move on to a new scene, you can decide whether to keep going separately or to reunite, but you can't reunite until both scenes are complete.

For Scarlett and Louella, you are welcome to search the room and/or interact with objects as you see fit. Objects available include, but are not necessarily limited to: the dead woman, the dead spider, the two doors, and the cobwebs.

For Cassie, you have the same options. Available objects include the door into the city, the double doors out of the city, the vines, the dead body, and the wounded dog.

Louella quickly glanced around. “Well we know Kerrish is probably alive. I think I’ve heard of those spiders.... they like their prey screaming in fear. Thankfully that means we have at least some time.” She said. “How do you want to proceed?”

The rogue stumbled back the way they’d come. Sixty paces, more-or-less…and it felt like it took her an eternity to arrive at the main entrance. The inner door was still open, the outer door still closed tight…and those vines with the slowly-falling pollen were still there. She hadn’t forgotten about them…but she hadn’t given them thought, either. The man’s corpse was still there, too, as was the badly-wounded dog. The dog looked like it had tried to leave, but without a lot of luck. Cassie let her gaze fall on the dog as she did her best to ignore the gentle flushes of warmth from the pollen falling on her…but she doubted she’d be able to ignore the flushes forever.

“Well, dog…looks like you and I are now about the same – badly injured, trouble moving around, damned to our doom.” She spoke quietly as she made her way to the main door, her eyes looking carefully for anything that might give her a clue to its mechanisms. Her left arm hung by her side, still: she could move it slightly as long as the shoulder wasn’t involved, she’d discovered, but anything involving the shoulder – which was just about everything – resulted in a lot of pain.

Maybe the keys…? They hadn’t unlocked or broken the inner door, so probably Chain Main had unlocked it. He might also have a key for the main door…although that was unlikely. But maybe…? No. Cassie wanted to avoid the keys; the anger and malevolent desire she’d felt when she’d touched them were still fresh in her mind. She remembered something about the vines, though…

She grabbed her sword from his sheath and swung it at the vines over the main door, cutting a couple of them down. Returning her sword to its sheath, she shivered as the pollen inflicted its remembered chill and flush, and she hated that she’d done that; she carefully used her left arm to wrap the illuminated vines around her right forearm to help her see as she examined the main door to see if she could see any mechanism or lock…

Cutting down vines, Cassie triggers another pollen attack; the vines rolled a 14 against her Strength defense, and she takes 1 Will damage. That said, enough pollen was shaken off of the vines you removed that they don't pose any further danger to you and may be used as a harmless light source.

The dog whined quietly at Cassie's words, more acknowledging that she'd spoken than that it understood her. It watched as she crossed the room and cut down the vines, then lowered its head again and closed its eyes as she wrapped the foliage around her arm. With her new light source, and no distractions, she scoured the room thoroughly and methodically, until eventually her search yielded results.

Most of the mechanisms connecting the two doors seemed to be embedded in the walls and ceiling of the room, inaccessible unless you could tear apart the masonry. But there was something: a metal rod, about three feet long, embedded horizontally in the mortar between the bricks. It was nearly flush with the wall, and buried beneath the tangle of vines; easy to overlook if you didn't know it was there. It was just loose enough that it looked as though it might be pulled out of its spot.

Though intent on saving Kerrish, Red was cautious to advance, first examining the room thoroughly. She searched the room carefully, but found no remaining threats, save perhaps the strands of web--they were easily avoided, but if one were careless enough to stumble into them, they might be trapped long enough for the spider to return. Still, with a little care, they could easily navigate to the far side of the room, where two wooden doors awaited them. Carefully testing the handles, Red determined the left door was unlocked, but the one on the right--closer to the hole the spider had gone through--was locked. Without Cassie's tools and expertise, the women had little hope of picking it, but they still might be able to break it down. Or, they could take the door on the left, and hope it still led where they needed to go.

Scarlett rolled a 19 to search the room, and located no traps, secrets, or dangers. There are two doors leading onward; the one on the left is unlocked, the one on the right is locked.
Cassie has inspiration

The dog was certainly not an immediate threat; the way it simply looked at her and wined before letting its head drop back to the ground was evidence enough for Cassie. She was thankful enough for that; she was in no condition to fight the dog off if it had moved to attack her. Of course, there was still the possibility of something or someone else finding her and killing her – or worse – but she knew she had to focus on trying to get the main door open.

At least her search of the room found something potentially useful. That metal bar – it looked like a lever, maybe – was possibly something that might help her get out. Of course, it might also seal the other three in if it worked, but at least she’d then be able to go and get help. She carefully worked the fingers of her good right arm in behind the rod and tested it to see if it might move…it felt like it gave a little as she tugged on it experimentally.

“Right, dog…here goes…” Cassie had no idea why she was talking to the dog – the dog that only a short while ago had mounted Red with the probable intent of breeding – but maybe it was better than silence. She braced her right foot against the wall below the rod and, hating that she only had one arm to use, pulled on the rod as hard as she could…

Louella looked between the doors. She’s heard enough stories involving brave heroes exploring dungeons and slaying dragons. “The locked door. Likely less trouble on the way.” She walks up to it and swings her hammer hard, grunting with effort as it hit the door.

7 to break the door.

Her wounds weighed mightily on her indeed, and while she was still hale and hearty, but her blow was weaker than it would have been.

The rod slid out of its place on the wall, revealing that it was affixed to another metal rod at a perpendicular angle, which still went deep into the cavity--overall, the mechanism seemed to be a crank, to turn something within. A faint light coming the crevice suggested that the vines were growing even inside the walls, but pulling out the crank didn't seem to have kicked up any significant amount of pollen.

Although its design suggested that the crank was probably meant to be handled at both ends, either with two hands or by two people, it turned easily enough with just one, at least at first. And that brought with it a series of creaking and scraping sounds that echoed from the walls, all the way to the door. It did seem that this should be able to release whatever mechanism held the massive double doors shut. She would just have to keep turning it.

However, after turning the crank about a hundred and eighty degrees, it started to get harder and harder. It didn't feel like the gears were grinding or the metal was scraping; the resistance she felt was somewhat elastic, like something was gumming up the works. As hard as she tried, she couldn't get more than one full rotation out of the crank.

If she could find some way to clear the jam, she might have been able to open the door by herself. But even in her best shape, Cassie would be hard pressed to force the crank when it the inner workings were gummed up like this. It would take somebody a lot stronger than her, or at least a second set of hands.

~~~
Louella and Scarlett took turns smashing their weapons and throwing their bodies against the locked door, to no avail. No creak of hinges or tell-tale crack of wood hinted that they were even wearing it down. It was beginning to look as though the unlocked door was the only way forward. Still, as they stepped away to catch their breath, Red turned and put a hand on Louella's shoulder. "We can get through," she said, exuding a surprising amount of confidence given their circumstances.
Scarlett rolled an 8 to break down the door. Scarlett is going to use Inspiring Beauty to give Louella inspiration.
It was hard work, trying to turn the crank; harder with only one useful arm to try and move it. And then there was the resistance that felt as if was occurring inside the wall. Cassie knew she’d never get it open on her own. Even in peak condition she’d be struggling as it was. She’d either need to find the others…or try and burn the vines out of the wall. It’d either work, or result in her demise. Better than sitting and waiting. She had the flint and steel to get sparks going...she just needed tinder to start the fire with. And something she could use to make a makeshift torch from, like a rod and strips of cloth. Chain Man’s clothing might do for the cloth, she just had to find a rod or stick or something…
She sighed softly and first moved to the man’s corpse to examine his clothing to see if it might be viable as a fuel for a fire. A rod shouldn’t be so hard to find…she hoped. Tinder, though…that could be tricky...
The dead man was clothed in little more than a soiled loincloth. It was vile to the touch, but it seemed as though it would light easily enough. If anything, it would burn too quickly--a torch made from this cloth wouldn't last for more than a few minutes.
Picking through the rubble strewn across the room, Cassie found no shortage of poles to tie the loincloth to. There were a number of legs from tables and chairs. Most of them were wood and rotting, and would burn well enough even without the cloth. There was also a remnant of what must have been a truly breathtaking work of marble; now, though, it was just a sturdy shaft of stone.
As Cassie gathered her ingredients and assembled her torch, the effects of the pollen began to weigh more heavily on her. Her eyelids felt heavy and her mind felt clouded. Still, she was able to press on.
In order to search the room again, Cassie needs to start a new scene; I rolled too low for this to trigger combat, but she takes 1 more Will damage from the pollen. She also recovers 2 Purity, and should be back to full.
Emboldened by her friend's words, Louella smashed into the door with renewed vigor. And then, everything happened in a moment. If one were to try and piece together some sort of a timeline of the next few seconds, it would go something like this...
First, the wood splintered under Louella's wrath, and the hinges gave way.
Second, although only barely, both heroines felt a swell of dread knotting their stomachs.
Third, Scarlett--more experienced in battling the corruption, and certain that sensation heralded an immediate threat--drew her blade and stood ready.
Fourth, Louella's charge through the shattered remains of the door was halted by something looped around her throat: a slimy grey tentacle, not unlike the ones that had emerged from the womb of that desecrated corpse. But this one was thicker than Louella's thigh, with a grip to match. It seemed to have come from nowhere.
Fifth, Scarlett cut through the tentacle with one valiant stroke, even as another emerged--again, seemingly from nowhere--to coil around her waist.
Sixth, Scarlett pressed her buckler against Louella's back and, with all her might, shoved her comrade through the doorway, even as more of the slimy grey appendages filled the first room.
Even looking back, Louella barely had time to process the scene in front of her. The tentacles seemed to be sprouting from thin air, but if she tried to follow them with her eyes, she could trace their path far beyond the room, to some monstrous, roiling mass at the heart of it all. It could have been miles away; it could have been in another world entirely. Whatever this thing was, it did not seem bothered by the normal ways of space or distance. As if to emphasize that, the half dozen tentacles that had caught hold of Scarlett began to pull in different directions, and for a moment it looked like she would be torn limb from limb. Instead, the disparate pulls managed to move her in a single direction, through whatever warped geometry this creature existed in, and she simply vanished.
And then everything was still again. Only the ichor-stained sword which had fallen from Scarlett's hand and the severed tentacle on the ground were evidence that anything had happened at all. Louella was alone.
The room she found herself in was small, compared to the one before, with rows of shelves along the walls and goods piled haphazardly on them--food, wine clothes, blankets. Here and there a tool could be found lying about. There didn't seem to be much of value, though, except perhaps whatever was in the locked trunk in the corner of the room. There was one door, opposite the one she had come through. It did not appear to be locked.
After some consideration, I'm taking this opportunity to remove Scarlett from the game, as we haven't heard from Rosina in several weeks. Hope you're not too let down by missing out on the fight, Jovial.
(I’m good man)
Louella was thoroughly shaken, and she made her way to Scarlett’s dropped sword, picking it up, then looking at where she’d been hanging. What.... was that thing? No matter. Louella shook her head, moving towards the chest and kneeling down, inspecting it, before jimmying the sword into the lock to try and pick it.
Pick Lock (agility): 15+2=17
She smiled. It felt almost like her friend was still helping her. No! Louella told herself, You don’t know if she’s dead.
The torch assembled out of varying degrees of useful items, Cassie paused. She’d only get one shot at this, realistically…unless she started pulling her own clothing off from under her armour to give the torch some longer life. And pulling her clothing apart was in no way an appealing thought, not here. The loincloth from Chain Man wouldn’t burn for long, so she’d have to be quick about getting a flame into the gap to try and free the handle, and she just didn’t have speed on her side right now…plus she had no idea whether it would actually work. Her broken left shoulder had started to ache badly; it wasn’t so bad if she could avoid moving her left arm, but that wasn’t always possible.
It didn’t help that she was now fighting to keep her eyes open. They felt so heavy…but she had to keep going.
She started breaking up some of the rotted wood, using her feet as the anchor point and pulling with her good arm, then took the smaller pieces and pushed them loosely into the crack where the crank disappeared. Hopefully they’d be enough to burn the vines away from inside the wall and free the crank handle so it could be turned when she applied the homemade torch to it…
Try and break wood into splinters, stuff 'em into the gap(s) where the handle goes, and try to burn the vines out. It probably won't work, but hey...ya gotta try these things. :)
I'll even drop Cassie's Inspiration into trying to make it work.
Although Scarlett's blade didn't quite have the finesse for picking locks, Louella did manage to break the lock with it. With that, she was able to pry open the chest. Whatever she had imagined being inside, it was probably not several yards of clean white linen. It didn't look like much--save that its appearance was remarkably pristine compared to anything else she had seen in this city. But when she lifted the strips of cloth from the chest, they felt oddly soothing against her skin. It was almost enough to overlook the way they slowly, ever so slowly, wrapped around her fingers.
With meticulous care, Cassie set everything up. When she was ready, she lit her torch and pressed it into the crevice. The rotted wood went up fairly quickly, and before long smoke began to seep out of the wall. Then the fire began to spread through cracks in the masonry, beginning to consume the vines clinging to the walls and ceilings as well. Acrid smoke filled the room, and despite her best efforts, Cassie couldn't help breathing some of it in. It stung her lungs, but worse than that, it carried the same effect as the pollen that had been showering down on her.
But it didn't last long. Within a minute or two, the vines had all burned away. Most of the smoke had drifted out the open door into the city, or was hanging near the cieling of the room. It might come down eventually, as it began to cool, but for now Cassie could breath easy, even if that didn't do anything about the sedative effects she had already suffered.
With inspiration, Cassie rolls a 13 on her firestarting. (+Will to represent the logistics and planning involved.)
Vines rolled a 22 on their last pollen attack, so Cassie takes one more Will damage. On the bright side--the vines are destroyed for now, so you won't be facing any more sedative attacks even if you stay in the room.
Louella has inspiration.
Louella held the bindings, observing how the behaved. The constriction may prove bothersome, but already she felt the soreness leaving her body, albeit not enough to have any notable effect. Glancing around, she tied it around her belt to make carrying it easier, although she knew it wouldn’t heal her this way. Perhaps her wounded companion would find it useful.
She’s not equipping it, but she’s bringing it with her to offer to Kerrish, since she’s beat up as all hell and could use the healing. Which also means I’m reuniting the group. Is that allowed?
The fire seemed to work well enough. Whether it was enough to free the crank she didn’t know, and she was in no condition to try it. Enough of that damned pollen had crept into her lungs, making her feel more fatigued and lethargic, but at least the fire had caught and burned most of the vines away. There might be more in the city – there probably were, in fact – but at least this room was clear of them, now.
Finding her companions was her next important task. She needed them; whether they needed her was another matter – she was, or at least felt, somewhat useless in her current physical condition. She made sure all of her belonging and equipment were secured, then leaned down to give the dog a quick scratch on the head.
“I don’t know, dog,” she muttered quietly. “At least breathing should be a little easier now the vines are gone. With luck – and Carielle knows we need it – we’ll both get out of here alive and sane.”
Then she was gone as she slipped through the doorway back into the city, her feet carrying her as carefully along the path towards the clearing where she’d last seen Red and Lou. Hopefully she’d be able to find them and they’d get out of here. Living was more important, surely.
Cassie picked her way back through the city, past corpses and rubble, and made her way cautiously into the grand building that Louella and Scarlett had gone into when they last parted. There she saw dead humans and spiders, massive webs stretching from floor to ceiling, and two doors on the far side of the room. One was open; on the floor in front of it were a couple of thick, severed tentacles. Within the room was Louella, securing a bundle of white cloth to her hip. There was no sign of Red.
Before Louella could explain what had happened, there was an unpleasant clattering sound, and long, thin black legs peeked through the doorway. A massive spider climbed in to the storage room with the two women; it was hard to tell if this was the same spider that Louella had seen carrying Kerrish away, but if it was it had left its prize behind, and was presumably looking for another.
Seeing Louella gave the rogue a spark of hope…a spark that was dimmed by not seeing Red nearby. There was little else to be said, really: Kerrish was gone, now Red…there was no point in asking if it was possible to find either. The answer wasn’t likely to be positive.
The answer was dashed by the arrival of a new combatant, and that Cassie could have done without. She was in no condition to fight, but there was no way Lou could handle this on her own. With a groan of weariness and discomfort she reluctantly drew her blade and tried to position herself behind the too-large spider in order to land a telling blow…
Louella's hammer glanced off the spider's thick carapace, but she seemed to have its attention at least as Cassie circled around it. The spider reared up, displaying fangs glistening with venom, but before it could drop down on Louella and plunge them into her flesh, Cassie plunged her blade into one of the joints of its exoskeleton. The creature unleashed a ghastly, hissing wail and fell short of Louella, though several of its long, hair legs scraped against her flesh. Harassed from both sides and battered by Louella's mighty hammer blows, the spider whirled around and pounced on the woman. This time, its was able to slip past her defenses, and its massive fangs sank into her upper arm. Perhaps worse than the piercing of skin and the tearing of muscle was the shock of venom that began to seep into her body.
With its fangs still lodged in Louella, though, the spider was less mobile, and Cassie was able to find a crack in its damaged exoskeleton, driving her blade deep into the creature's innards. It fell away from its prey, seeming slightly unsteady. From somewhere in its abdomen, it produced a thick cord of silk, which it took in two of its hind legs and attempted to ensnare Cassie. But, with only a few eyes angled to see her clearly, it was not able to catch the nimble woman in its web.
Cassie had been trying to re-position herself so she could launch another strike at the spider, but the furious onslaught from Louella had removed that need. Instead the rogue found herself looking at the corpse of the creature as yellow-ish fluids oozed from its wounds. It was far from being an inspiring sight, but it was better than looking at it when it was alive. Instead, she looked at Lou and knew that the other girl was in trouble; she’d seen the spider’s fangs bite deeply into the flesh of her companion.
“Come on,” she muttered quietly as she carefully sheathed her blade. “Let’s head back to the room we entered through. I think I’ve got the mechanism identified, but I can’t work it on my own; I need your strength as well. If we can get just a little bit of luck, we can get out of here.” She held out her good hand toward the other woman, as if offering to lead her there.
