Clarke Griffin was one of the few who knew the truth: that the Ark would run out of air sooner rather than later, and that they had precious little time to find a solution to their problem. That was how, at seventeen, she found herself in lockup so that she couldn't so much as breathe a word about the Ark's true fate to another soul. Her punishment was light compared to that of her father's, whose secret had cost him his life.
She didn't know what had become of her boyfriend, Aiden. The pair had spent almost two years at each other's side, only shy by a couple months. He was her first everything as she was his, and they had been inseparable. The last time they had seen each other had been the night her father was floated: on the Ark to commit any crime was to sentence yourself to death, and Jake Griffin's wish to reveal the truth had counted as treason. While his death had come quick, it had not come easily to Clarke. She had known that her mother had been the one to report Jake - her own mother had sentenced her husband to death, and had Clarke been a few months older she would have followed suit. Instead, as a juvenile, when the "best interests" of the citizens of the Ark were for what she knew to stay a secret, she had found herself in lock up. The last thing she had seen of the station was Aiden succumbing to the guards as she was being pulled away kicking and screaming. Clarke had little hope that she would see him again: there was no doubt in her mind that as soon as she hit eighteen and aged out of the juvenile system, she would meet her father's fate.
Today things changed, however. Today she got forced out of her cell and, when she refused to cooperate, got forced unconscious. When she came to she was strapped in to a pod with many other faces, some of whom she recognized as other offenders and some of whom she had never expected to see. It was only when Chancellor Jaha's voice rang out through a screen mounted to one wall that she discovered what was going on - despite the fact that the Earth was considered uninhabitable, the delinquents were being sent to the ground. Expendable - that was what they were to the Ark. Her first thought was not of how she was going to survive, but whether or not Aiden had found himself in the same ship as her. Because she wasn't around to see if he had been locked up like she was, the blonde didn't know whether or not to expect him there. A cursory glance around the shuttle proved negative - it appeared he either wasn't there or he was out of her sight.
They lost a couple lives before they hit the ground - two idiots who had thought it was cool to try and take a space walk when their pod was about to enter the Earth's atmosphere. There was nothing she or anyone else could have done to save them. Would it even be worth it? Would their first breath on the ground be poisonous and mark the start of the end for the hundred, now ninety-eight? Impact was rough and everyone was left dazed, though it was Octavia Blake, known to all as the girl who lived in the floor, who took the first steps outside but not before reuniting with her brother, Bellamy. As everyone began to depart the ship, and there appeared to be no signs of immediate radiation poisoning, Clarke simply waited just inside the doorway. Each person who walked by that wasn't Aiden made her heart sink a little further in to her chest. As much as she wished that he was safe on the Ark (as safe as one could be on a space station that's just months shy of running out of air), she had also been hoping that she would be given a chance to reunite with him.
