Office Romances don't work...do they? (Nightstalker x Candi)

Chris watched her leave, his mind already focussing on the island mainly as he tried to play solitaire. Managing to win it once he quit before he started losing, strangely the game had done that too many times to him before for it to stress him out now. One thought kept recurring, if he was to keep a low workload, one way around it could be to take on more of a managerial type role but would she, the doctors or bosses allow him too.

Claire came back in after a little while and delivered the good news. "We would have to ship our things over and we would have to find a Kennel for the pup--at least until we were out of the hotel and into the house, but it's a relatively small cost, all things considered. The higher-ups and I have talked about it, and we agree that you need some work limitations. One of their suggestions was a more managerial role, and since you have a lot of experience in the field we agreed you might be good for it. It'll scale back your hours and the amount of work you could take on, but you'd be making more money and we'll get to see more of each other...but I didn't want to agree to anything until I was sure of what you wanted and what the doctor thinks is best. And I'd have to see how you were in that role as well. "

Chris had long since closed up the laptop, hearing her footsteps first then her voice he smiled brightly back into her eyes. If she was reading his mind that could be good or bad. The island was almost too far and too long away for him right now it seemed as he moved slightly in the bed. The monitors gave a little beep before he spoke. "Claire sounds perfect to me, perhaps a trial roll in that position with no little or no pay could be the way to do it."

She nodded. "We'll have to monitor you, but we'll work it out when we get there. How are you doing, Chris? Feeling any better than you were? She asked, moving the laptop to the side and sitting next to him.

Chris listened to her words and fully understood them, his eyes meeting hers as he reached out with several fingers to lightly touch hers. "Feeling a lot better, this break is what I needed. Yes I know should have done it myself but better late than never."

"Next time, let's try to keep you out of the hospital, okay?" She smiled softly and kissed his forehead. "I'm going to call my mom and have her come and help me get a few things packed for our trip. She'll probably get a start on packing away our belongings too. Dad will help her haul them to be shipped. Soon, we'll be living on the island for good," she said with a little smile.

Chris listened to her words, his cheeks heating at a little at the combination of them and the kiss. One single tear rolling down his cheek as he began to think over one matter. "They might need to take my dog too especially if those on the Island do not allow him."

She smiled softly and shook her head. "They'll take care of him until we're in our house," she said softly. "But they allow dogs on the island, just not the hotel. Don't worry hun. You won't be leaving him behind." She smiled and kissed him again. "I promise."

Chris sighed a little , returning the kiss to one of her cheeks his fingers reached to lightly hold hers. "Claire if I had to leave him here I know he would be looked after well."

Chris smiled and rested his head lightly against her shoulder, wanting to be as close as he could be for now. He could not wait until they were on the island, they could fully relax more.

over the next few days, Claire rarely left Chris, and when she did, it was never for more than a few hours at a time. Arrangements had finally been made and she was able to find a few housing contenders on the island that were near work and the ocean at the same time. They would have to have their cars shipped over or sold and there was the matter of her parents taking care of the dog until it was time to move in, but it was all pretty much lined up. She'd packed two large suitcases for their stay at the hotel until their clothes could get there, and she took the liberty of packing two carry-on bags for them.

Today, Chris was being released from his room. Claire was there looking fresh and clean, smelling just as good as always. "Hey. Ready to get out of here?"

Chris felt like his legs had been cut off such was his helplessness as he lay in the hospital bed, self inflicted kept coming to mind as he occupied his days with her company and listening to a little music or the television as background noise. His writing was still something he could do as parts of an unfinished novel sat in his apartment, unless thrown out he would finish that with her help. Barely sleeping much the night before his eyes were a little blurry as they met hers, his words excitedly whispered. "You betcha, just need the doctors to fully sign me out."

She smiled and kissed his cheek. "We're gonna go ahead and get you out of here and then I'll take you home and you can play with the dog and get fresh clothes and shower and eat something that doesn't come from the hospital," she said with a little laugh.

Chris laughed a little at some of her words as he moved from the hospital bed slowly, his feet not having been used much were a little shaky as he hugged her close. "How did I get so lucky to find and keep you."

She held onto him and helped him stand. "I don't know, but you'd better start thanking," she teased. Her lips brushed against his lightly and she held him close. "Come on, now. Let's get you out of here."

Chris slid one of his long and muscular arms around her waist as they moved first towards the door of the room then out into the large open hallway. It was pretty bleak in here and he knew this was the last time he would be seeing it as he gave it a little wave, the large glass doors at the front of the hospital allowing him to once again breathe in some fresh air. It was not the same as the island but far better than feeling like he was locked up in some tiny room. His words softly spoken. "Oh Claire I do believe that will be possible, one thing that does not require too much work for me and that is the wedding on the Island."

She smiled and kissed his lips again, enjoying the fact that he really did seem to have made a turn-around. "It's work, but it's work you will do happily," she teased, putting an arm around him as well.

Chris's long muscular arm tightened its grip on her waist as he almost crushed her body to his, away from the neon lights and constant stares of the staff he kissed her passionately. Her teasing words would come back to haunt her as he had most of the wedding already planned from their stay on the island before this tragedy. His eyes sparkling like freshly cut diamonds, his own teasing words whispered. "Oh yes that work is easy, just as I am for you."

Taken by surprise, her soft body melted into his as he kissed her. Blushing, still a bit surprised, she blushed softly. "I'll keep that in mind," she said with a chuckle. "Come on, Romeo. It's time to get you home." She smiled and walked him out to the car, so relieved that he was better now. She helped him into the car since he was still a little weak and then got in and drove them home.

There were boxes everywhere, many of their things having already been packed. "We've been a little busy," she said with a chuckle.

Chris relaxed a little more on the way home, strength slowly coming back to every part of his body. His blue eyes focusing and taking in each and every one of the boxes that lay around various parts of the house. Softly kissing her cheek his muscular arm lightly brushed across her buttocks, speaking softly before walking casually towards the back yard. "I can see and thank you."

"No problem," she said, blushing just a little as he touched her butt. She walked into the kitchen and looked around for something to make for dinner. She could be an impressive cook when she wanted to be. "What would someone who just got out of the hospital want to eat..." she asked herself.

Chris had noticed the reddening of her cheeks as his legs totally found their way to the backyard, standing there for several long minutes taking just as many long breaths of the air he was almost flattened as his dog ran up fast and almost jumped into his arms. Reaching down he patted his head and threw a tennis ball for him, even after their disagreement he could not show love or attention to him. Not the dog's fault but his own and he would forever remember it.
