Office Romances don't work...do they? (Nightstalker x Candi)

Claire climbed back into bed with him and asked for a blanket once. She slept with him and made sure that none of his monitoring sensors came off. She kissed his cheek and stayed close, wanting him to wake up with her at his side.

Chris woke only partly once during the night, the smell indisputable but why. She had made it clear where they stood. Shrugging it off he slept soundly until morning, eyes opening a little as the sensors in his fingertips beeped a couple of times, the ones monitoring his heart stayed at the normal speed they had been since given the sedatives. His body was relaxed as he spoke softly and slowly. "Claire is that really you."

Claire woke not long after she heard him speak. Surprised that it wasn't a dream, she looked up at him and nodded. "I'm here," she said softly, her face full of concern and what appeared to be regret. "I'm so sorry I left..." She leaned up and kissed his forehead, sitting up and on the edge of his bed. She smoothed out her hair and watched him.

Chris's eyes opened a little more taking note of her facial features as he listened to her words. Trying to reach for one of her hands he spoke in a whispered tone. "No it is my fault, always has been but this has seen me re-evaluate everything."

She took his hand and held it in her own. "I should have tried harder," she said softly. "But it didn't seem like you wanted to listen...Well, that's not important anymore. The doctor says you need a change of scenery. I agree. Will you trust me with this?" she asked.

She kissed his knuckles and nodded, leaning up again to kiss his forehead. "I need to go pick up a few things and make sure I feed the dog. Poor guy's all alone. But I'll be back really soon, I promise. So you just rest here. Relax. I'll be back, okay?"

Chris smiled but at the same time felt guilty, head nodding slowly his words softly spoken as he tried to reach for his water. "Will see you when you return."

She frowned and got the water for him, holding the straw and the cup for him so he could hydrate. "Actually, I'm just going to ask a friend to check on the dog and have a messenger get my laptop for me. I'm going to stay here. I just need to used the ladies' room."

Chris noticed the frown but he was not going to be pushing himself anymore, the monitors that were checking over his body would be triggered if he even attempted too. Taking the drink and a few long sips of it he nodded to her words. Thoughts were almost null and void right now, the sedatives had worked like a charm on him.

It pained her to see such a brilliant, talented, wonderful man reduced to this state, but she simply couldn't leave him. "I'll be back, sweetie." She smiled and ran her fingers through his hair and then picked up her purse and headed to the bathroom, asking a nurse to check in on him since he was awake now. Claire made the calls for the messenger and her friend. Both would be at the hospital soon: one for the keys and one with her things. She made a call to the work place and gave Chris's work to employees who'd needed it. When that was done, she freshened up and met the messenger in the lobby for her computer, and her friend a few moments later for the keys. Then, it was back to his room.

Chris knew it was his own fault, what he really wanted though right now he would not get. That was peace, tranquility and alone time with just her and back on that island. Picturing it all in his mind again his head sank lower into the pillow, sipping his drink like he would if he was on the beach there. Everything was peaceful there for him, he felt like he did not belong where he was right now.

Claire had only thought of one place after the doctor had suggested a change of scenery. Their island. Now that she had her laptop, she could look for a place for them to stay. She returned to Chris and sat in a chair next to his bed. She was going to look for a more permanent place on the island, and that would be that. She could find work there, and Chris, for all of his love of literature, could find another line of work that wasn't so stressful. "Hey. How are you feeling?" she asked softly. "Ben's going to take care of the dog today, and make sure everything there is taken care of."

Chris looked and to a lesser extent felt like he had swallowed a whole bottle of sedatives, his body for the first time in weeks felt totally at peace. Not hearing her footsteps, his eyes moved from the bed over towards her meekly nodding at the words before smiling warmly. "Best I have felt in ages, when we going back to the Island."

"As soon as we're out of here, if I can arrange it," she said, with a little smile. She sat on the edge of his bed and rubbed his head as she held her computer in her lap. "Won't be quite as extravagant as last time, but then, we'll be looking for a house there if I can find one. We don't have to make a decision right away about whether or not we stay, but I'm only booking a room for a week or so."

Chris smiled and transferred his drink to his other hand, the other hand lightly touching hers before supporting the laptop more. His words softly spoken but also well thought even in his current condition. "Claire I know your Boss would love to open up another office, with that as option they would most likely buy the house for us."

She looked at him and frowned. "We have been talking about it...but, Chris, if I do open a new office there, I can't let you work there. You worked yourself into a hospital bed," she said, her voice breaking a bit at the end. "I need to know that I can trust you not to do that again."

Chris noticed the frown and turned slightly in the bed to face her a little more, his eyes sparkling just a little as he spoke softly. "Claire are you saying that you will not let me take one piece of writing per week."

"I know how you feel about what you do, but I can't let you have more than one piece at a time. Not until I know I can trust you not to overdo it...and I don't know if you can. Besides, you need to take a break." It pained her to have to end his career like this...or nearly do so, but it was absolutely necessary to limit him.

Chris listened to her words, nodding sagely and meekly smiling as he ever so lightly touched his fingers to hers. "I do understand that and thank you for showing me the love and care."

She smiled and nodded. "Of course. And you know, you might decide you want to try something else with your free time. I think just being back on the island will make you want to be outside more." She smiled and kissed his cheek. "I love you so much, Chris. I hope you know that."

Chris smiled and already knew that he would wish to spend time outdoors. his eyes sparkling as he spoke softly. "Oh Claire I do believe you are so correct there, time spent in the outdoors and with the most beautifulest woman in the world is all I will ever need for the rest of my life."

She laughed and hugged him gently. "So, I'll have to set up a lot of stuff for us, so I better get started." She smiled and kissed his lips, booking their tickets and hotel rooms for one day after they got out of the hospital. "Okay, I have to make a lot of calls, but I'll just be out in the hall if you need me, okay?"

Chris smiled at the combination of her laughter, the hug and words. His own softly spoken. "Go do what you need to do, I will still be here when you get back, nowhere else I can go until they let me leave."

She smiled and kissed his lips softly. "I love you Chris. I don't have any work on my computer, so why don't you go ahead and play solitaire or something while you wait? It's a little more engaging than tv." She kissed his forehead and then headed out to the hallway to start making a myriad of calls. At the end of two hours, Claire had a job transfer in and she would be managing the new branch in Hawaii with her fiance with the new work limitations in place for him. They were willing to pay for her house if it stayed under a certain amount, and the office was already owned, so all that was left was to help create the workspace and get things done as far as hiring went.
