Fact: Basic is the hardest part of being in the army, aside from war.
Just make sure you talk to him as much as possible, and tell him to keep his head down and try to not get noticed. It'll save a-lot of trouble.
As for the random, pointless, stupid smokings, just remember to tell him that all the Drill Sergeants are trying to do is help them get stronger.
