Helena frowned as she watched her charge. It had been quite some time since she'd last seen him quite so excited to be going anywhere. She got a bad feeling about that. She stood next to him, invisible to his eyes as they waited for the charter bus to come. The angel folded her beautiful wings in agitation as she watched out for him, careful to protect him from wandering thieves. Her golden hair was pushed out of her face as she finally sat next to him with a sigh, her light blue and white dress hugging her body and flowing in just the right places.

"Where the hell is that bus?" she murmured, growing impatient.

Devlin had always felt a strange presence around him, but his mother told him as a joke that it was his guardian angel. She had no idea how truly right she was. Helena had been surrounding him since he was a baby, and he'd grown up into a very amazing young man. He was only 19, but he was perfect in form and just as amazing in personality. He was about 6'3'' and he weighed around 200 pounds of pure muscle. He'd played football in high school, and he'd been working out since his freshmen year to become as perfect as he was. He too was growing impatient waiting for the bus as he looked out onto the road and walked up and down the street.

Helena sighed and then finally saw the bus heading toward their stop. She made sure his bags were still standing there. Devlin seemed so happy to finally get up that he couldn't have sensed what she had. As the bus came to a stop before them, a car came careening over across the street, the driver asleep and acting as dead weight. In mere seconds, the bus would be hit and her charge would never have enough time to get out of the way. She put her arms around him, opening her wings to protect him as best she could. Her body wasn't there, but she had enough magic to protect him from severe internal injuries.

He walked out to see if the bus was coming and when he saw it he smiled as he turned around to grab his bags. By the time he was going to get onto the bus he was struck by it. The other driver had collided with the bus forcing it to go flying into him and knock him forward. He survived, but he was barely alive in the hospital. He was to the point where he woke up and it was completely white, "Oh shit...I'm dead..' He said with tears in his eyes as he looked around and there was only a woman there. He looked at her, "Who are you...I feel like I know you..where am I?"

Helena frowned, tears in the corners of her eyes. "I failed you....I'm so sorry, Devlin." She closed her blue eyes and took a step forward. "My name is Helena and I'm your guardian," she said, her wings opening just a little bit. "You're not dead, but you're close enough that you can see me. I'm sorry I couldn't protect you," she said, taking a few steps closer. "I'll do what I can to send you back though."

He looked at her very confused, "You failed me?" He asked as he stood there, "My guardian?" He asked still confused about what was going on. "Send me back?" he asked as he looked very worried, "Are you an angel or something? This can't be heaven.." He said softly as he looked into her eyes, "You couldn't protect me from what? I don't remember. I guess I almost died or something?" He asked as he sat there.

"A charter bus slammed into you and your body is still alive, but you're in something of a coma. It's my job to make sure you get back to your state of consciousness," she said, sitting near him. "In order to do that, you need to remember today and why you want to go on living," she said, cupping her head with his hand. "I am your guardian angel. I've been protecting you for as long as I can remember. This time, I couldn't."

He thought about it and he nodded, "I remember it now. Oh God it hurt so much..." He said as he looked at her, "Well I sure hope you can bring me back to my consciousness." He said softly as he thought about why he wanted to live, "Well I haven't done a lot of things that I really want to do. Does that count?" he asked as he felt her head in his hands and he felt her like he had all his life. "You're the presence." He said softly.

"At least you remember," she said with a little smile. Helena wondered what he meant by his last statement, but just let it go, focusing instead on getting him back to reality. "I'm afraid you'll need to do better than that, darling. Why do you want to do those things so badly? Who do you want to do them with?" she asked, her heart aching as she watched him. She really didn't want him to die. It hurt so much to know that she was responsible for this kind of pain, this situation. It was all her fault.

He looked at her smiling, "I've wondered what that was all my life, and my mom always told me that it was just my angel watching over me. I wonder if she knew how right she was." He said laughing as he looked at her, "Um well because I feel like my life isn't really complete without having done them. I'd love to do them with a woman whom I've yet to meet you know, my future wife." He said as he looked at her, "If I didn't I feel like no one would remember who I was."

She smiled softly as he told her about his feeling and his mother. She listened and shook her head. "You need to think deeper, Devlin. Why would those things define you? Why do you want to do them? When you remember that, you'll go back," she said, taking his hand in hers.

He looked at her, "Well because the things you do in life define you don't they?" He asked as he looked at her, "Without her I wouldn't be remembered by a single person. I need to do them to fulfill my hopes and dreams. I've wanted it since I was young."

She smiled and the white around them began to dissolve into a hospital setting. "Welcome back," she said kissing his forehead. Her image wavered but then clarified and she moved to sit on a chair to the side while his mother came back in from talking to the doctor. "Open your eyes," Helena said softly.

He slowly opened his eyes and she was still there, "How can I see you?" He asked as he looked around the room and his mother was there with his doctors. "Mom?" He asked as he tried to sit up but the doctors told him to stay lying down. He needed to rest, "Am I going to be okay?" He asked sitting there.

Shocked that he could see her, she only looked at him in disbelief. He called out for his mother once he saw her and she practically came running to her son, gently putting her arms around her baby. "Oh, Devlin, I was so worried you wouldn't wake up!" she cried softly into his paper gown and the doctors looked at him.

"It's miraculous that you're awake now. Your body will heal given time. You've a broken arm and leg, but other than that, you've just got a lot of scratches and bruises. We stitched up the worst of them and bandaged the rest. You have a burn on your right arm, but they got there soon enough to make sure that you won't need a skin graft. It will take time, but you'll be alright."

Helena was visibly relieved and smiled softly at her charge as his mother cared for him. Helena merely stayed in the corner and watched.

He smiled as he looked at them, "Well that's really good to hear. I was worried that I might have died or something." He said as he looked over at Helena. When everyone had left he motioned for her to come closer. "So what exactly is going on? How come I can see you now?" He asked looking around.

He didn't want to be caught talking to thin air, so he was on alert for whenever a nurse or anyone came by. The last thing he wanted was to be checked into the mental part of the hospital because he'd gone crazy. He looked her up and down, "You know, for a guardian angel you're quite petite." He said chuckling to himself as he looked into her eyes. "I wish I could have seen you before this though. It would have been nice when I was all alone."

Helena shrugged and came closer when everyone left. "I'm sorry. I don't know what's happening; you shouldn't be able to see me," she said worriedly. "Then again, you did almost die. Maybe that's why you can see me..." she frowned and then made a face at his "petite" comment. "It's not always size that matters," she said with a little smile. "I'm sorry I couldn't be there for you. I wanted to be, but you're not supposed to know I exist."

He shrugged, "Maybe it's better now that I know you exist right? Maybe it's easier for you this way. Now you can tell me what to avoid or what might happen if I do this. That way I know the risk in certain things before I do them." He said smiling as he looked at her, "And I was only kidding about the petite thing. You're actually quite pretty. So, how did you come to be my guardian?" He asked looking at her.

"I've never heard of something like this happening before," she said with a little smile. "I don't know if it will be better or worse." The angel moved his hair out of his face and kissed his forehead. "Just rest for now. I was randomly assigned as your guardian. But from the moment I started protecting you...I liked it." I liked you, was what she'd meant, but she couldn't tell him that. Not now. Especially because it would never work between them. He couldn't feel her...the hair only responded because she willed it to. And even if he thought she was pretty, she couldn't say anything to him.

He nodded, "Hmm well hopefully it will all work out for the better. I mean how could it possibly get worse?" He asked as he felt her kiss his forehead, but it was a weird feeling. It wasn't like a normal kiss on the forehead. It was more of a tingling feeling on his forehead. "Okay, that seems logical enough." He said laughing as he looked at her, "Well I'm glad you like protecting me." He said as he closed his eyes and tried to get some sleep. He tossed and turned a little bit as he slowly drifted off.

While he slept she was called to the heavens by other high angels and told why she was visible and given the ability to take physical form and use magic to protect him in that form as well, but she was to use it sparingly, and her position would only last while she was still in her position--she could not fall. Helena accepted the responsibility and came back to his side still as an angel.

He woke up screaming as he looked around and tears were in his eyes, he had relived the accident but this time he saw and felt the whole thing. "God did it look as bad as I saw it just now?" He asked as he looked over at Helena. "You're still here?" He said looking at her, "Don't you get bored watching me all the time? I mean I feel like I'm not all that interesting to be around anyway."

"That's not the point of my job," she said, taking a seat on the side of his bed. "It was horrible to watch," Helena told him, sadness clear in her face. "It was the first time I'd ever failed you that way. I really thought I might lose you." She wished she was invisible again because she was sure that her face was showing a great amount of pain. "I'm sorry," she said, looking away from him.

He shook his head, "No worries Helena. I'm alive and fine now, it's no big deal." He said smiling at her, "You only fail me if I die right? So you haven't failed me." He said laughing as he looked at her. "You know I wonder though, if you didn't exist, would I be alive?" he asked softly as he tried to get her attention so that he could get an honest answer from her.

"It's possible," she said with a chuckle. "You haven't done many stupid things in your life, so you probably would be. But you probably would have gotten hurt more often." The angel smiled and looked down again. "And I fail you whenever you get hurt. I'd say I seriously messed up this time." She closed her eyes and looked back at him. "I've been given the power to protect you with a human form as well. It only seems fair that I should be able to really interact with you now that you can see me."
