It wasn't amazing that Jack immediately jumped to the 'I don't believe you' mindset. Rather, it was the logic - why
exactly he refused to acknowledge her words may have held some truth - that took her aback. He wasn't wrong; Fayth knew he was right. Hacking duel disks was indeed very doable. Back in Maiami City, there were probably loads of people who had the potential to do just that. But to outright try to suggest
she would do such a thing?
That was what made her scoff.
"Really, Jack?
Really? You are right about me possessing fortes outside of dueling. But that most definitely is
not one of them. Failing to acknowledge something you don't understand ... fine. I get that. But don't just throw over wild accusations like that.
Especially without proof. I don't give half a shit if you're king here or not; even
you have to follow procedures and heed by the same rules I do. That being said, if you're trying to legally threaten me, fine. But that's something I definitely will beat you in."
Fayth paused, repeating one of the last sentences that just passed her lips ... and then snickering as she continued thinking more and more on them.
" ... You know? That attitude is less akin to a king's and more similar to a tyrant's. A cowardly one, at that rate. You're no different back home either. Shame. But ... I guess you are whom you are. Selfish, naive, and refuse to even consider that someone just happens to know more than you about a particular subject. A child trapped in a young adult's body .... pathetic."
Sliding her feet along the ground, Fayth felt the concrete. She had noted that the path she'd walked down earlier had a certain feel to it. So once she detected where it was, she stepped down on the area, beginning to walk away. "Hmph. Don't worry. I have no intention to. I was just the messenger. That's why you aren't supposed to shoot them, as the proverb goes. You don't like what I got to say? Fine. But know it wasn't me that wanted to relay this to you. Unfortunately, they're busy with their own things and couldn't tell you themselves. You two are eerily alike ... "
The last sentence was mumbled under her breath. Her own "Hmph" passed her lips as Fayth began walking away, navigating herself to a small apartment she'd taken shelter in since arriving in the Synchro Dimension.
"The difference, though, is Reiji knows when to give people benefit of the doubt. You don't know jack shit ... heh. Figures."
A disappointed sigh now resounded, mingling in with the air. This was basically what she had expected ... but it didn't make things any less disappointing.
Ten minutes later, she finished her trek home, opening and closing the front door behind her. Plopping into the nearest chair, she tapped a few buttons and activated the phone function. Though she couldn't see the face appear, she knew it was Reiji simply by the greeting she received within mere seconds of the call being answered. "So? How'd it go?"
"How do you think?"
Now it was Reiji's turn to sigh. "I suppose it can't be helped. Even Yuya had to work on getting Jack to listen to him, and that took quite a while. Unfortunately, we don't have time to try to convert him." He pushed his red-rimmed glasses up, something Fayth detected with her ears. "At least you did what was asked of you. Come back over, then."
"With pleasure. Ugh. This is by far the worst dimension."
Her fingers lowered as she pushed down on the button again, ending the call. Reaching into a hidden compartment of her disk, she pulled out a card. Now
this one was something Jack could have tried to accuse her of. He'd be partly right. It was fake ... in the sense of not an official playing card. But
that was because it wasn't meant to be used in decks. It was how she got around and traveled through all of the dimensions. Holding it in between her fingers, she slid it into the middle trap and spell slot.
... But felt ... nothing?
"Hmm?" she questioned, tilting her head. Slowly, Fayth pulled the card out and re-inserted it ... feeling her heart beat faster as the same thing happened. Nothing. No change in how her body felt, no sensations to imply the device was working ... not a goddamn thing. "What in the fuck?! Don't ... don't tell me .... " After trying at least ten more times, all of which had the same result, Fayth felt her body begin to tremble. Her fingers hastily danced across the keypad once more.
"What's up? Did something come up?" Reiji asked, his tone holding a slightly taken aback one. Which made sense; Fayth didn't expect him to be called by her again, let alone so soon.
"It's not working!"
"What isn't?"
"My disk! It's not letting me return back!"
Reiji's eyes widened then narrowed. "Oh? Try again. Let me watch." Sure enough, even thirteenth time wasn't a charm. "Hmm," he mused, the sounds of him working on his own disk able to be heard. "Something is broken, it seems."
"With all due respect,
that much is obvious. Do you know what exactly though?"
"Not yet. It'd be easier to examine if I were there. Unfortunately, the situation has ... gotten worse, as you can imagine. I can't get over here myself, nor can I really send anyone else who has the ability to help over."
Fayth felt her heart sink. "Not even Reira?" she asked hopefully.
"No. He's a Lancer. All of us are in the midst of preparing for battle."
"W-Well ... isn't there anyone who isn't a Lancer and is good with this tech shit?!"
Reiji shook his head. "No. I'm sorry. There are a few things I can do. One, you can wait and give me ... time. Anywhere from one week to a few months, and I can
try to come over. I can't make any guarantees, as the ongoing frays will determine how fast or slow I can arrive, if even I can do just that. But your best bet .. is staying here for a bit."
"Stay? As in live here?"
"Should it mean anything else?"
"You can't be serious ... " Her fists clenched as Fayth angrily slammed her right down on the armchair. "What the hell am I supposed to do here?!"
"Adapt. You're smart, Fayth. And you're not weak, even with that handicap. You'll figure something out. I know this isn't your preference. I can literally hear it in your voice. It seems, however, this is the best choice. Certainly the faster one. What I can do is transfer you some money. I wasn't originally going to pay you because this was meant to simply deliver a message. Given how drastically the circumstances have changed, though, I can make an exception." Fayth heard Reiji tapping again, this time on a different keyboard, hinted by the fact the noise was slightly further away. Not much, but enough to know he wasn't using his duel disk, which suggested it was probably a laptop or computer of some sort. "This should be enough to last you a week to ten days. That's more than enough time to figure some way to earn your own income. I've given instructions for the bills to be folded in the usual ways when you withdraw it from your account."
" ... Alright. I understand."
"I knew you would. Just keep holding on, alright? In the best case scenario, you'll get money
and I - or Reira - will be able to come over in time. For now, this is all I can do. I suggest come morning, you withdraw those funds and start planning as soon as we disconnect. Good luck."
Yet again, Reiji ended their talk. This time, he left Fayth in a very desperate and distraught state.
Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit ...
"FUCK!" she screamed out, relieved there were no neighbors for her to pester. The urge to shove the table down was barely fought off as Fayth angrily stood up and stormed to the bathroom. She doubted a cold shower would cool her temper down. But damned if she wouldn't at least try. Because ...
something had to help her. And since it couldn't be Reiji, it would have to be something Fayth could do for herself.
