Atem yawned as he relaxed at the pokecenter. It was still somewhat early, at least by his standards. He glanced around idly. This would be the day he challenged the gym leader, Roark. He smiled, and stood, and walked out. He walked the rather short distance to the gym. Hopefully he'd manage to get there before anyone else, because the day before he'd had to wait, and Roark had deemed his pokemon too tired to battle.

He approached the large doors to the gym, and waited. He knew he was there before the gym "Opened", so there'd be a few minutes to wait and loaf around. He smiled. "It's shady over here, if you want to come out." He said. A single eye appeared in the air, a yellow circle filled with red, and slowly a pokemon came into view. It had a blackened body with yellow markings on it, much like a second face had been painted on its torso. He smiled. "Ready for this, Dusknoir?" He asked simply. The pokemon noiselessly nodded. However, it then perked, the antenna on its head twitching, and it faded from view as it sensed someone.

Atem looked around for the person who had come.

Eva had been at the gym early last night. Of course Roark wouldn't battle at that time anymore. She wasn't surprised. But at least she'd be the first today. This twenty-five year old woman had been a trainer for fifteen years. She'd never wanted fame before, got really nervous in front of a group of people, but she'd always loved pokémon. It had taken years before she'd gotten over the worst of her fear. It had been so bad she'd shut down, had fainted once too. The jidders she felt now the counselor said was normal. But one thing she knew, she was a damn good pokémon trainer. That course had given her the self confidence boost she needed to be able to handle herself in front of crowds. And most jidders disappeared once it got started.

She stood about 5'3ft tall, had a lean, sort of muscular build and pretty nice curves. She was dressed in dark green pants, hiking boots a dark red, somewhat tight t-shirt and carried a big backpack. She had long straight black hair with a blue-ish shine to it. It currently hung in a braid over her left shoulder and reached just apssed her E-cup breasts. Her eyes were almond shaped, a bit big and black. Her skin was pale and didn't really tan. She spent a fortune on sun block for that reason. She wore a velvet dark green color with a small pink pearl in front.

She walked into the gym. "Aah Miss McCoy right on time." Ian said. He took care of the pokémon there and had called Roark who should be down soon. "Hello Ian." She said. She noticed a young man there. He had to be around her age. It was time for her battle now.

Atem looked at the person who had come. After the initial stunned reaction to her looks wore off after a little bit, he smiled simply. "Early riser as well, eh?" He asked simply. He walked in just after her. He had seen her before, or so he thought, and since she'd been there before he had been yesterday, it was only fair that she got the first shot. He waited simply by the door, looking around at the gym. It was rocky, almost an indoor mountain. Of course, considering that it was Oreburgh, it didn't surprise him, especially when he knew that Roark was a rock-type trainer.

He relaxed against the wall, his shadow stretching a little as Dusknoir hid in it and shifted a little to get a better look. Atem stretched and yawned silently, wondering when Roark would show up. Hopefully soon, because the sooner that this battle ended, the sooner that he'd get to battle with him. Even Dusknoir, easily the most patient of the two, was getting a little antsy. They hadn't battled for almost three days as it was, mostly to save energy for this battle.

Atem surveyed the inside of the gym once more, then let his eyes wander over the female. Gods she was beautiful. He couldn't take his eyes from her. Luckily she didn't seem to be paying attention to him.

Roark walked inside and saw the two trainers. "Good morning everyone." He said.
"Good morning." Eva replied politely. She felt his gaze on her but ignored it for now.
"Are you ready Eva?" Roark then asked her.
"Yes." She replied.
"Then please follow me." He said and walked with her to the battle field
Eva followed and wasn't surprised to see a rock type field. This would be great. Roark had quite a reputation in Oreburg city.
"Alright everyone. The rules are the following. Both trainers can only use three pokémon. Only the challenger can change pokémon in between battles. Begin." Ian said.
"Alright here's my first pokémon." Roark said and released a geodude.
Eva took her pokédex out, not to find out what pokémon it was, but to scan it and check its arsenal. Then she released her venusaur. When she'd left bulbasaur had been her first choice.
"Wow a venusaur. That's a real challenge in a rock type gym. Please, the first move is yours." He said.
"As you wish. Venusaur flash." She said. A moment later a flash was aimed at Geodude, but would be bright for Roark too. Geodude was a bit confused and its eyes closed. "Alright, now leech seed." Eva replied.
"Dodge it." Roark ordered, but geodude didn't know where it was coming from and moved up. It didn't help and leech seed hit its target. Geodude now opened its eyes again, annoyed as hell. "Alright Geodude rollout." Roark ordered.
"Frenzy plant, restrain geodude." Eva ordered. The Frenzy plant first stopped, then restrained a struggling geodude before it could hover away. "Sleep powder." Eva ordered. Venusaur aimed and fired sleep powder at Geodude who was forced to breathe it in it didn't take long before the small rock type pokémon was in dreamland.
"Geodude can no longer fight." Ian said. And that was round one. Venusaur hadn't moved from its spot and looked like it was warmed up.

Atem simply shrugged to himself. Sure, she was using a type advantage, but really, that wasn't going to help her pokemon get stronger. Strength through adversity, he would have said. Dusknoir watched as well from its vantage point. It seemed to share the same sentiment, as it quickly lost interest and floated about near Atem.

"I completely agree." Atem said to the pokemon. It hadn't said a word, yet it had communicated quite a bit to him from its mannerisms. "Maybe we should come back another time. I don't think she'll leave anything left for us to fight." He said, looking up at the pokemon. This was sometimes considered dangerous, as Dusknoir was said to steal the soul of anyone who looked it in the eye long enough. But it had never happened to Atem. He had raised this pokemon from Duskull to what it was now, and knew that he would never harm his trainer. He only smiled, and relaxed, eyes closing. "Maybe in a minute, though."

However Roark's next pokémon she'd never seen alive, only on pictures. He released a rampardos. She scanned it read through its arsenal and it was impressive, especially the flamethrower was something she would have to watch out for. And the match was on. "Rampardos, headbutt." Roark said.
Rampardos was incredibly fast. "Vine whip." Eva ordered. She didn't have to tell venusaur how to use it because the vines moved to make a leg sweep and not a moment to soon and rampardos fell onto his side. However it didn't do much damage.
"Flamethrower." Roark ordered, if that could make contact up that close....
"Light screen." Eva ordered. The Light screen blocked the flamethrower. But he had her on the defensive now.
"Zen-headbutt." Roark ordered.
"Bite." Eva replied. Venusaur's large mouth and strong jaws closed around rampardos' head, the creature was outraged and couldn't move that well now and venusaur got pushed back. "Bullet seed." Eva now ordered and that made contact with rampardos' head from close range. It stumbled back before falling over, but just got up again. This one was incredibly strong.
"Sunny day, then solarbeam." Eva ordered. Venusaur launched sunny day. Roark thought it was odd she used sunny day, it would only help rampardos' flamethrower after all. He had to go all out. "Rampardos head smash." He said, afterall charging a solarbeam would take a little while.
"Jump with vinewhip, then fire solarbeam." She said. Venusaur launched itself into the air with the vines. Rampardos jumped up, venusaur fired the solarbeam and it struck at close range and an explosion followed. Venusaur had a bit of a rough landing and rampardos had a harder landing. But it seemed to just get up again, although with much more difficulty.
"Alright, flamethrower." Roark ordered. It was supercharged thanks to the sunny day Eva had used to power up the solarbeam faster.
"Hidden power." Eva ordered, knowing a supercharged flamethrower might break through light screen. Venusaur summoned hidden power, but instead of launching it the small energy balls started flying around venusaur really faste in rings and creating a shield around venusaur that repelled the flamethrower.
"Secret power." Eva ordered.
"Dodge it." Roark said, but venusaur made it fill the whole field and there was no dodging it and on a rock type envirement the effect was the one hit would be paralyzed by fear. "Sleep powder." Eva ordered. Venusaur launched the sleep powder at rampardos who was frozen in place by fear and it soon fell asleep. "Synthesis." Eva said as the referee said that rampardos couldn't fight anymore. Roark released onix next. Even with synthesis Eva knew that venusaur would be tired and recalled her. Instead she released a pikachu.
"Start." Ian said.....and the last round was on.

Atem smiled. Now Roark was quite a trainer, to go head-on against a venusaur and actually hold it off for a time. The flamethrowers just seemed to get more intense. Atem looked to Dusknoir. "I think I may use a different pokemon first." He said. Dusknoir nodded, not bothered much by the fact that it wouldn't be the first to fight. Atem stood, and found something else to do for the time, as he thought over which of his pokemon he'd send out first. There were quite a few choices for him, and all seemed like they would be fine. However, he finally decided who he'd use first. He smiled. Hopefully he'd still get his battle against Roark.

Eva scanned the onix, it had a nice repertoire. Roark thought of it as odd that she chose for pikachu. "Alright onix, double edge." Roark said. Pikachu used its tail to jump without any order. "Rain Dance." Eva ordered. Pikachu lainched it and it started raining. Onix didn't like it much and before Roark could give an order went under ground. "Magnet rise." Eva ordered. Now that pikachu was floating around Onix couldn't hit her. But onix didn't surface and Roark seemed to be waiting until the rainy dance would stop. "Pikachu you know what to do." She said and signed a wave at the little yellow pokémon. Pikachu moved to the whole onix had made and landed about three feet behind it, then performed a surf attack. Roark hadn't figured it out and onix appeared topside looking drenched and exhausted. "Thunder." Eva ordered and that knocked the onix out.
"Onix can no longer battle and the winner is Eva." Ian said
Eva smiled and thanked pikachu before recalling it. She accepted the badge, nice. She walked over to the boy that had been watching.

Roark walked over to the other boy. "I think we can battle in the late afternoon, my pokémon should be fine then." He said.
"They can be fine a lot faster." Eva said and released a blissey. "She can help and a few berries can get them their energy back." She told them. Roark nodded and let them out. Blissey went to work with aromatherapy. All three got one berry after that and they felt like new. Eva recalled blissey now and took a seat on the bleachers.
"I guess we can battle now." He said and recalled rampardos and geodude while onix would be up first this time.

Atem smiled as he watched hte blissey go to work. It was amazing, how pokemon could do such amazing things without the aid of any technology. He nodded to the woman. "Thank you, I was hoping I wouldn't have to wait too long." He said to her, smiling. He walked over to the area where he would stand for the battle. "My first pokemon will be Dusknoir." He said. His shadow seemed to perk up, and the ghost-type rose up, cackling happily. It slid forwards into the arena, the lone red eye looking over the onix.

"I assume the battle will be the same as you did before, so... I am ready." He said to Ian. Ian nodded, looked between the combatants. "Begin!" He shouted.

"Dusknoir, double team." Atem commanded. Dusknoir faded from view a moment, and several of it reappeared, surrounding the Onix.

Roark nodded. "Onix, use Rock throw." Onix lashed at some nearby rocks, and sent them flying at the images. Some dodged, others vanished, and all of them cackled.

"Will-O-Wisp." Atem said. Normally, it was difficult to strike with this attack, but with the many clones, it was impossible to miss with eight. It could be seen that Onix's skin, regardless of how tough, was in blazing pain as the fiery spirit dug into the pokemon.

"You're welcome." Eva said and sat down in the bleechers and watched. Any ghost type pokémon was always a pain in the ass. This would be interesting. She relaxed on the bleechers with Blissey next to her watching. This young man was intriguing.

It was clear that the cackling dusknoir had an advantage. The burns that the will-o-wisp inflicted were distracting to the Onix.

"Onix, Iron tail!" Came the order from Roark. Onix paused, and seemed to shine a moment before slamming its tail straight through some of the Dusknoir. It made contact with the real one, and the ghost shot across the arena. It rose again, the single red eye flaring. It was mad.

"Shadow punch." Atem said, smiling. Dusknoir cackled, fading from sight.

Onix's shadow twisted, and suddenly a fist shot up from it, hitting an area where a wisp had burned the Onix. Three more punches shot out from the shadows before Dusknoir reappeared.

Onix looked to be in quite a lot of pain. It was obvious that Dusknoir knew just where to hit things to make it hurt. Roark growled. "Enough of this, Onix, come back." He said, recalling the pokemon. He sent out geodude next.

Atem made a gesture. "Dusknoir, come back. That's enough for now." He said. Dusknoir drifted back to its master's side. Atem pulled a pokeball from his side. "Here goes." He said, releasing a Larvitar.

Eva watched the battle. Most of Onix's move were normal type so a ghost was perfect. Now a larvitar vs a geodude. That could get interesting, both were rock types and she knew the screech of a larvitar could really make one's ears hurt.

Larvitar looked about as it came out. "Larvitar, you're up against the Geodude." He said, pointing out the rock pokemon. Larvitar nodded, and seemed to ready itself. It reared back a little, and atem quickly plugged his ears as a piercing screech filled the arena. Had Larvitar been any stronger, glass would have shattered from the sound. The effect was obvious, though. It stunned the geodude long enough that the large rock that Larvitar threw hit it dead on. Atem smiled. "fire at will." He said simply, and Larvitar charged its opponent, sharp teeth bared, Larvitars had amazingly strong bites, and this one would be no exception.

"Geodude, Magnitude!" Roark said. Geodude had managed to recover a bit, and the arena shook as a rather vicious tremor ran through it, knocking Larvitar over.

Eva had plugged her ears too. She'd heard the screech of a larvitar before. It was going quite well. The larvitar looked adorable, really adorable. She wondered how it would end.

Larvitar got up after a moment, still a little wobbly, but not seeming too hurt. Well, it seeme dlike that until it was hit head-on by Geodude's rollout attack. Rock collided with rock, and Larvitar was knocked aside by the spinning Geodude.

Larvitar rose again, and looked mad. It was getting rather frustrated. It burrowed underground without hesitation.

Geodude screeched to a halt, and looked around. It never knew what was coming, as Larvitar burt out from the ground beneath it, launching it upwards along with multiple large rocks. Larvitar grabbed a rock and threw it at Geodude while in the air, knocking the smaller rock pokemon away before grabbing and throwing a bunch of the other boulders at it, making quite an effective Rock Slide attack. As soon as it touched ground again, it was off towards the stunned geodude. There wasn't much of a chance to dodge the vicious bite as Larvitar tossed it like it was nothing. Geodude simply rolled to a stop, apparently unconscious.

Atem smiled as Larvitar moved back and Roark recalled Geodude. He then sent out Rampardos. This fight didn't exactly look fair.

Eva was glad larvitar had won. But this was not going to be fun for the little one. Rampardos was incredibly fast, much faster then geodude. Hopefully He would have a good strategy ready or use a different pokémon all together. It had been fun to watch though.

"Larvitar, let's see how we can do here. Rampardos is tough, but you can show that you're tougher." Atem said. Larvitar nodded, and turned to face Rampardos. Its eyes flashed, and a black wave of energy lashed out at the Rampardos. The Dark Pulse struck it squarely in the face. The rampardos only seemed to get mad at this. It began to charge at the little pokemon. "Larvitar, dig under it. If you can hit it and get out of the way, it will run out of energy." He said. Larvitar quickly dug under ground, only narrowly avoiding getting plowed into the ground by the angry Rampardos. It looked like it would become a game of whack-a-larvitar, with Larvitar popping up and either throwing somthing or firing dark pulse at Rampardos, then disappearing underground before the other pokemon could reach it.

Roark was not pleased. "Rampardos, stop chasing it and use flamethrower." He said. It wasn't going to be too strong against the rock-type, but it would catch the Larvitar. And indeed it did. As Larvitar popped up, it didn't expect to have intense flames shot over it. Larvitar didn't look like it was doing too well after that. "Larvitar, to me." Atem said. He wasn't going to let his pokemon just get toasted now. He recalled Larvitar, and let it go again so it could sit at the sidelines and either watch or tend to the burns it had.

He smiled, and tossed another pokeball. Wobbuffet was not too strange of a choice, given what it could do to an attack-oriented pokemon like Rampardos. It simply stayed still, watching Rampardos. And as predicted, it charged. It never saw what was coming as a shield appeared in front of Wobbuffet, and struck the Rampardos hard before it could even touch Wobbuffet.

And there was a moment of silence. "Challenger wins!"

Eva watched amused. It was like cat and mouse. Once it was done Blissey and Eva aproached the wounded larvitar. "That was really good larvitar." Eva said. For such a small and young pokémon it most certainly had held its own. "Blissey can help with your injuries." Eva said. She hoped larvitar would allow it. She was glad when it did. It looked much happier when the burns were all healed.

She looked at Atem. "That was a great battle." Eva told him. He got his badge at least. "Maybe we can travel together?" She then suggested.

Larvitar looked up at Eva and Blissey. It seemed to hesitate a moment, but it got up and walked closer, allowing Blissey to heal it. It was happy, and thanked Blissey with what was unmistakably a hug before wandering over to Atem again. Wobbuffet waddled over as well, and Atem recalled it before going to gt his badge, leaving Dusknoir and Larvitar with Eva.

He came back with the badge and looked at Eva. "You battled well as well, so I should congratulate you as well." He said. "And that sounds good. It's nice to have more company." He said. "Also, thanks for healing Larvitar." He said, recalling the little pokemon. Dusknoir popped up out of Atem's shadow and simply waved. It seemed pleased with the idea of having company as well. It then went about fixing its antenna, which had been slightly bent from the Iron Tail that it had been hit with.

Blissey was glad with the happy reaction and returned the hug. Afterwards Eva recalled her. She had never met a trainer who had a wobbufet before. But those were a big pain in the ass alright. "Thanks." Eva said and smiled a little. "You're welcome and I'm glad you want to come along. Do you just do gym battles or also contests? Have you ever tried a contest?" Eva asked. It was time they were on their way. She said goodbye to Roark and looked back at Atem.

"I've never tried a contest. I haven't gotten much chance to, since I never really seem to go by the contest hall. It's on my 'to-do' list though, and as it is I think I'll need a pokemon to enter. I'm not sure how well the ones I have now would do." He said. He said goodbye to Roark as well, and walked out with her. "Were you headed to a contest or something? As it is, I tend to just meander around a bit." He said, laughing softly. He shuffled around in his belt pouches a bit and pulled out a large, spiky green berry, and fed it to Dusknoir, who seemed overjoyed to get the simultaneously incredibly bitter and slightly sour Durin berry.

"I want to try it and I think larvitar would do great in the first round. Dusknoir could be great in the second. Wobbufet would be way to risky. If your opponent uses a defensive move to attack you're done for. I've been looking through tapes of contests in different libraries and it's been very educational." Eva eplained. "I hear there's one in Jubelive city, then one in Floroma town and one in Hardhome city not too long after that." She told him. "It doesn't matter which pokémon you use as long as you can show them off and their qualities." She said.

Atem simply nodded. "I see. Well, I will see what I can do then." He said, smiling. "I can only assume you were headed to one of those cities. Probably Jubilife, since it's closest?" He suggested. There was a pause. "So, how long ago did you become a trainer, if you don't mind me asking?" He asked her.

"I was indeed. The contest in Jubilife city is in one week." She told Atem as she continued to walk. "About fifteen years ago, what about you?" She asked him. They would be spending a lot of time together and they had almost a whole day left in which they could travel quite a lot.

Atem nodded. "Twelve years for me. I started a year late, though." He said, nodding. Dusknoir was my first pokemon, when he was still a wee little duskull." He said, ignoring the slight glare from the pokemon. They did indeed have all day to travel, and it wouldn't take too horribly long to get to Jubilife City, if he remembered correctly.
