What are you reading?

Slowly making my way through the Song of Fire and Ice series. Slowly making my way through the Game of Thrones TV series as well.

Alright, still a slow reader; but so far this year I've managed to finish three books.

First one was that I finally read the Hobbit, I had previously started and then dropped the book; but this time I got all the way through. I enjoyed it, but feel like as soon as Smaug decides to go burn down Laketown the whole story just falls apart and lose focus, like Tolkien was unsure how to end things.

Second one was The Hand Solo Adventures, these were fun but never really consistent narratives. Some entertaining scenes though and old EU.

Third, this one was a bit of a slog due to the writing. Hit List: An In-Depth Investigation into the Mysterious Deaths of Witnesses to the JFK Assassination. The writing was repetitive and because they covered so many different cases none of them were really in depth. I didn't expect much from it though, I was mostly interested in strange stories it would make me aware of to go pursue elsewhere.

As to what I'm actively reading at the moment, Strange Tales of the Parapolitical: Postwar Nazis, Mercenaries and Other Secret Histories. Deep Politics continues to be a fascination of mine and a never ending source of inspiration for table top ideas.

On the lighter side of things I am working my way through Requiem for a Ruler of Worlds, a sci-fi story where future earth has become isolationist and xenophobic to an extreme, to even other humans living off world. When one day a wealthy guy who ruled over many worlds ends up dead and lists a terran in his will and an earthman is forced to go on an adventure and learn that the universe isn't so weird.

There's other books I'm dabbling in, but those two have been receiving most of my focus currently.

Currently on my third re-listen of the Stormlight Archive books by Brandon Sanderson. Want to be ready for this December when the fifth book drops. Though I don't know if I am ready for the almost ten year wait for the sixth one 😅

Alright, been a while since I posted here. Can say I did finish Stranger Tales of the Parapolitical and Requiem for a Ruler of Worlds. The first was interesting, but felt more like a summary of information I had already come across. Though it was nice to have it organized together. The other book was entertaining and I will eventually read the sequel, don't know if there's more books beyond that but I'll look when the time comes.

I have also finished reading the kindle book Life in a Tank which was a first hand account of an officer who volunteered to be a tank crew member. Has the distinct of having been published prior to the end of the war. Honestly doesn't give much in the way of details about the tanks and is more events between actions of traveling to and from one location or another. It's pretty much just gentlemanly british propaganda.

Also read my first Thomas Pynchon with The Crying of Lot 49 about a woman who finds herself trying to track down the legitimacy of a collection of forged stamps and discovering what seems to be a century spanning conspiracy between rival postal services; but she can never find the definitive proof as her own world falls apart. It's something that I feel I will need to read again. For Pynchon next of his I'll read The Gravity Rainbow as I've a copy somewhere.

Next up is A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine, sequel to a Memory Called Empire. It's a good book that and where I felt like the first book had a young adult quality to the writing I get none of that here. Though I will say that I found the story of the first book more compelling because this one seemed to wrap things up too neatly. I hope to see more books in the setting; but I'm not sure in what ways it could develop.

Just today I finished Translation State, the Fifth book set in the Imperial Radch setting of Ann Leckie; but a standalone like Provenance which I don't feel like reading before hand would be required. The original trilogy would be useful to understand the wider setting and each book does seem to build off one another as they move the time line forward. I'm not sure how I would describe the book; but it was a joy to read and had trouble putting it down at times. I would love to read a lore bible for this setting and want to read more of it.

As to what I am still reading, I'm slowly working through The Fortress: The Siege of Przemysl and the Making of Europe's Bloodlands, The Night Land by William Hope Hodgson and American Tabloid by James Ellroy.

The Boyfriend by R.L. Stine.

it was all a prank AGAIN

Just finished the Eragon series for a second time and now got The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse by Charlie Mackery. A brilliant and really inspiring book. The movie of it is awesome as well!

I've read 3 books this week!

The Sinner by Shantel Tessier as well as Sabotage by Shantel Tessier and The Housemaid's secret by Freida McFadden is what I've read.

Now I've started Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros.

Recently decided to read the next Wayfarers book, A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers. Found it to be a light and breezy read which held my attention and was a fun story. The ending felt a little shaky and is a bit abrupt; but as an example of slice of life sci-fi it's a very good book.

I remember really enjoying that trilogy, only read a couple of the standalone books.
I was so disappointed when I finished the third book and discovered that was all there was for those characters. I really wanted more of Nine Fingers and Glokta. Glokta might be the best character ever.

I'm reading The Stand as part of a Stephen King Book club. They're doing all of the King/Bachman books in chronological order. Lucky for me I've already read it so I'm just doing a refresher. I also have a book by Stuart Turton that's on hold on my libby.
