Fenice smiled up at him, “I’m glad you know them, I just wished you had a bit more of your homeland with you. The blacksmith was happy to make both of them for me.” She kissed him back, lacking a bit in passion, still worried over what would happen were she accused of murder. Nodding to Mathilde, she rose and prepared the small dinner for them while they talked. Some things she had mentioned to her father about her thoughts of the lords.
“I wish for him to be a lord, perhaps a second in command to Ne’ebo… I know he must be knighted first but I know he is a trustworthy and loyal man that looks up to you and fights well from what I have observed. His wife worries, she is expecting and they are in need of money. This would provide and it wouldn’t be given to them, he would earn it.” She squeezed his hand appreciating that he even took the time to ask. Some men never considered a woman’s thoughts.
Fenice takes the plate offered by Mathilde, her stomach is rumbling and she has barely eaten all day so the food is welcome. The continued talk is interesting and she isn’t needing to input save a bit. A lord of education intrigued her and she found it was a good idea. “I feel that would be an essential part of our kingdom, to make us a thriving nation of educated and well versed people that can defend their home, their women and their family.”
She finished eating listening to them carry on about all the old lords and the positions they held. Whether they were important or not, most divvied up their various tasks and took all the money for themselves. She was surprised to learn that they had cheated; she had been so caught up in the chess games she barely remembered the conversations going on around them. Her jaw dropped as she found out how much money there was in the vaults and it was only part of it. Her eyes landed on her father as shocked as he was.
“He chose me…” Her lips mouthed back before returning Ne’ebo’s easy smile. “That is truly remarkable my knight.” She handed her plate off to Mathilde and placed her head against his shoulder. Smiling at her father, she made a request. “Father, why don’t you challenge Ne’ebo or the Archbishop to a game of chess?” She smiled up at him, her fingers wound into Ne’ebo’s as her father and the Archbishop moved away to try out the new chess set.
“You will not leave me tonight? I will have you stay in my room, I will dress first and then you shall come in. Mathilde will peek in on us and you will wake me before you go… but not too early. You have no competitions tomorrow and can take breakfast with me, yes?” Her fingers lifted and traced his jaw, she would beg him but tonight she didn’t want to be alone. Yes the lords were being threatened but that still didn’t make her feel safe knowing that the man she killed would have had his way with her if given the chance.
Sighing she settled against him, the dress uncomfortable. Corset digging into her tender flesh, even though they made her breasts a lovely display. “Ne’ebo, my wedding dress will cause you to melt into a puddle at my feet,” She whispered the words softly into his ear before kissing his cheek and rising to leave. “I am exhausted, too much excitement today… Ne’ebo, will you escort me to my rooms and watch over me?” Elias looked up from his game watching the duo. It was safer for them to part ways but he understood his daughter’s fears and nodded to the couple.
Fenice hung to his arm and showed him into her sitting room; leaving him there, she moved through the doors and changed as quickly as possible. Practically ripping the corset off her trim body, she dressed in a thin nightdress and left herself bare beneath save a thin pair of panties. She called him in when she was brushing her hair at her vanity. Eyes shimmering as she gazed at her mother’s crown on the edge of her vanity. She felt so blessed in that moment and completely exhausted as well.
