Xavier put the paperwork down for a moment, to clear his head. But that only made the memories stronger.
He'd come to the hospital hoping to get some first aid. Monsters had wrecked his truck, so he'd ran. Monica was still unmoving on his back, the only sign of life her breathe and tears. He'd entered the hospital, only to see someone he didn't want to in the emergency room, when he got there. _Her_. The woman in red, or Eve as that cop, Aya, had called her. "Interesting. It seems she's resistant. And _you're_ in control. Fascinating." She waved a hand, and it morphed into a claw once more, frightening everyone around her. Xavier raised his gun, but far too slow to do anything. People changed into monsters or goo again before his very eyes, and he couldn't stop it. They came at him, too many for him to get them all before they got Monica. Something, anything...
He felt it for the first time then. A burning sensation in his eyes. And everything seeming to slow down. A mental trigger for the first time. Xavier _moved_. Shot after shot, dodging and running with Monica on his back, he moved faster than a human had any right to.
This is what she meant by in control. Whatever had caused them to change had changed him too. He just didn't lose his mind. Nausea rose in his mouth. Did those people still know, still sense everything? Monica shifted. It didn't matter if they did, they weren't in control anymore. Maybe it was a relief for them, when he killed them. Xavier didn't know. He did know that he had to, if Monica was going to live. And that mattered. All he had left of his brother was her, and he wasn't gonna lose her.
Xavier pulled himself out of the memories, and continued looking. He'd find the guys who backed Hans, and make them pay one way or another for what they fueled.
