All we have is each other (Me and Friend in the shadows)

She didn't like the plan but she didn't argue knowing that it was necessary. It was taking longer for the cops to respond to her suggestion but eventually their thoughts shifted from this car and hotel to a different one. The walked away from the car and Gem relaxed but her breathing was a little labored.

"I did it...they're leaving but...that took a lot..." She said knowing she'd have to sleep.

Jett slowly opened the door and peeked out. He watched the the police moved away and went back to their own car. A second later, the cops had left and Jett let out a deep sigh of relief.

"Good work Gem. I know you're tired, so you just go to sleep while I load everything back up and get us out of here. We'll find another car in the next town and dump this one. Once we get far enough away, people will stop caring and we can figure out what to do next." He said as he went to work packing up everything they had brought in with them.

"Pass out on the bed and I'll load you into the back seat when everything else is packed up. You really are amazing my dear heart."

"Okay" She said softly.

This was risky but she knew he could handle it as she sat down on the bed. She blushed at his compliment she wasn't sure about being amazing but she didn't really care.

"Thank you my darling brother" She said with a smile as she laid down "I'll see you when I wake up".

It wasn't like just drifting off as soon as her body relaxed she was out. Her sleep was dreamless and she was completely still which was strange for her. She was always moving around in her sleep.

As much as Jett wanted to rush out of there, he knew that they couldn't do so. It took in nearly an hour to load the car, as he had to make sure that no one was thinking anything out of the ordinary was going on. Once the trunk was fully packed, he casually strolled back into the room. Not saying anything, he picked Gem up and carried her out to the car.

Once she was tucked into the back seat with a blanket and pillow, Jett slowly drove off, waiting till he was out of sight before stepping on the gas to speed away. He drove for several hours, the radio turned off and his mind not really concentration on anything other than getting as much distance between them and the city as possible. Finally he pulled over to a small dinner and reached back to wake up Gem.

"Gem? Are you feeling hungry at all?" He asked, his own stomach answering the question for him.

She groaned softly as he woke her up and opened an eye with a yawn.

"Yeah...I guess that I'm hungry" She said softly sitting up.

She stretched her arms out smiling as she looked at him happily. Leaning forward she hugged him again from behind the seat.

"Thank you for letting me sleep brother dear" She said softly.

Jett hugged her warmly, his hands lightly rubbing her back and shoulders as he spoke. "Not a problem my sister. It's getting late, so after we eat it'll be your turn to drive. I need some sleep as well. All this landscape is hard on the eyes after a few hours." After speaking, he broke the hug and opened the door of the car.

"I don't know how the food tastes, but right now I don't care. We should grab a table that's out of view, if they have one. We've got some money left, but we can't rely on it for much longer. If we can, we should find someone bad to rip off. I know you don't like the idea of stealing, but we really don't have much of a choice." He said with a sigh as he head to the front door.

"I don't mind driving while you rest" She said "I don't think we should stop at a hotel until we get another car".

She climbed out behind him and walked to the door with him listening to him.

"I know we don't have a choice" She said "I just don't like the thought of doing it".

Jett held the door open for Gem as they entered the dinner. It was early afternoon, meaning that most people were still out and about, leaving the dinner relativity empty. Spotting a booth in the back corner unoccupied, Jett moved the two of them back there. Taking a seat, he watched as the waitress came over and handed them menu's.

"We'll need a minute to look." He said to the waitress, hoping to shoe her off so that the two of them could have a minute to talk. The woman nodded and left the table, leaving Jett to thumb through the menu. "I don't know what I want. What about you dear sister?" He asked softly so that no one would hear them.

"How about splitting a burger" She said "Its the cheapest thing on the menu and I'm not very hungry".

She was hoping he wouldn't want to skip out on the check if it was cheap. It wouldn't help if they got caught either, they weren't far enough away from home yet.

"Does that sound good brother" She asked him.

"Sounds good sis. And a milkshake to go with that. I'm more worn out than hungry." He replied before letting the table go silent. When the waitress came back, Jett placed the order and waited until she was out of ear shot before speaking again.

"So we've got enough to pay for this meal, and get some gas, but we need to grab a new car before then. This one's too hot. Once we get a little farther away, we can grab a third car and use that as our transport. Like I said before, we need to target people that are the scum of the earth. The police and media won't care what happens to some drug dealer or gang banger. All we have to do his take out one or two from each city, then move on. No one will be the wiser." He said in a hushed whisper.

"I understand" She whispered back "I guess it'll be okay if its bad people...right".

She wasn't sure but then again it'd be easier to get away if its a drug dealer. They're not quick to report theft or even be found if it comes to killing them.

"Right. Only bad people." Jett replied softly before pausing again as the waitress returned with the order. He quickly cu the burger in half but let it sit on the plate. Instead of eating right away, Jett took a sip from the milkshake, feeling the cold cream run down his throat before he spoke again.

"If you run into any problems while driving, just wake me up. Once we get to the next town, and get some cash, we can find another motel to crash at. We both need to pass out for a long time before heading on this trip my dear heart. But as long as we stick together, nothing can stop us from finding happiness." He said with a soft smile.

She took one half of the burger and took a bite thankful for something good in her stomach. She listened as he spoke nodding in agreement as he spoke.

"I hope your right" She said softly.

Her mind had been open the entire time because she was so paranoid about them getting caught. She couldn't lose him to anyone no matter what, she couldn't live without him.

Jett took the other half of the burger and mirrored Gem's eating before passing the milkshake to her. Rather than waiting for the waitress to come back, Jett pulled out his wallet and left a twenty dollar bill on the table for when they were done.

"I can't live without you either dear sister. But you need to be my eyes when I'm taking out the bad guys. I'd never force you to do what I did, so I want you to act as the look out while I take care of the wet work. When your finished, we should get going. The longer we stay in one spot, the more likely someone will find us."

She finished her burger then drank some of the milkshake deep in thought about what would happen to them.

"I can do that brother" She said softly "But don't expect me to run and hide if something goes wrong".

She would protect him exactly as he'd protected her and nothing would ever change that no matter what.

"Alright let's go" She said with a nod and stood "The more ground we cover before I need sleep the better off we'll be".

"Agreed." Jett replied as he finished off his half of the meal before standing up from the table. "I'm going to sleep in the front seat just in case you need me. When you get tired, wake me up and I'll take over driving. The next city is the one we change cars at." He said making his way to the door, knowing Gem would soon follow.

"Alright" She said with a nod following him outside.

Once outside she started toward the car hating having to close her mind. If she wanted to focus on the driving she couldn't let the thoughts of others distract her. As the usual silence closed on her she immediately relaxed thankful that she'd avoided the loud orchestra of voices.

"I'll wake you up when we get there" She said to him "I should be fine driving that far".

"Thank you dear sister. I'll be fine once I've got a few hours sleep." Jett replied as he sat down in the passenger seat. His head laid back and it took a lot of effort for him to not pass out right there and then. Letting out a deep sigh, his eye's looked out the window for a moment before Gem entered the car.

"When we do reach Miami, we should just set ourselves up on the beach full time. Away from all the people with their noise. Can you image hearing nothing but the sea late at night, gently rolling onto the shore?" He said as his eyes started to close. "No more stray thoughts crashing in when you want to sleep; no accidentally reading the minds of your friends. Just the sand, and the waves, and peace." Jett finished saying as sleep overcame him and he drifted off into a deep slumber.

She got behind the wheel and started the car with a light sigh. As Jett began to spoke she couldn't help but smile it was a wonderful dream but she doubted it would ever come true. She had to hold back tears as he filled her mind with the images.

"It sounds wonderful brother dear" She said softly pulling out of the parking lot "I hope we find that place".

Her mind was closed from his so he wouldn't be able to tell her real thoughts. She looked at this from a grim perspective knowing they'd be running for the rest of their lives.

Jett only briefly heard his sisters words, his mind needing to rest along with his body. His dreams this time were normal: a random mash of images and sounds which would be forgotten once he work up. He slept on, waiting for Gem to wake him up to take over, his head resting on the back of the seat as his dreams came and went.
