All we have is each other (Me and Friend in the shadows)

Jett left her to the task of washing away the stain of the men who had hurt her. Keeping a close eye on the door, he also started looking around for fresh clothing. He would not let her body be touched by what remained of the four who had raped her.

He felt, more than heard, Gems' tears fall from her eyes. Walking back to the curtain, he stood outside and let his mind speak to her. "You are still beautiful."

She jumped feeling his mind touch her forgetting their connection for a moment.

"I don't feel that way" She replied.

She knew that it was wrong but she'd seen everything that those men projected, including the other girls. It felt a thousand times more horrible and she couldn't stop seeing them.

"I know, but you still are. You will always be beautiful....to me." Jett said as he lightly pushed the curtain aside to see her.

"Gem, I know that we'll have to run soon. Do you have any place that you want to see first before we leave? Or anyone to say goodbye to first?"

She looked at him and down at the ground he was so kind. He was the only good person in her life the only one that actually cared about her.

"No...there's nothing here" She said softly.

They needed to leave and there was nothing that would tie her down to this place anymore. Her opinions about this town and these people had been shattered.

"I just want to get dressed and get out of here" She told him "As far as we possibly can".

He nodded lightly in response. "I'll find something for you." He said, moving away from the shower. A second later, the lockers began opening.

"There's several sets out her for you to try. I don't like the idea of stealing, but we don't have a choice. When you're ready, we'll head back home and grab everything we need. We should grab a car as well. Once we're out of the city limits, we can plan where to drive to."

"That would be the most logical option" She said softly walking out of the shower.

She looked over the clothes and settled on a hoodie and a pair of sweatpants. It was so strange to think that things had changed so drastically in the span of a few minutes.

"I'm ready to go" She said softly "But I think we should from the back...noone saw us come in and they'll think its strange for us to come out of here".

Jett briefly watched as Gem came out of the shower before turning his back, making sure that she was alright. As all right as anyone could be given their situation.

"Your right. Hopefully we won't have to hurt anyone else before we take off. It's getting late and I don't know how many people are still here. The plan is: we hit home, going in through the upstairs window. We pack what we need then book. I'm not sure what we'll do for money." His eyes fell to the floor as he spoke the last part.

She listened to him and sighed softly they were in a desperate situation. It meant they might have to take the money which didn't sit right with her.

"We'll manage..." She said reassuringly "We need to go now though".

She walked up to him and gripped his arm this whole thing made her scared. They would be alone...not like before they would have noone at all to help them.

"Before anyone shows up" She added.

Jett nodded and quickly began walking towards the back door. He pulled Gem to his side and wrapped one arm around her in a vain attempt to undo what had happened. Reaching outside, he quickly scanned the parking lot. As he feared, their options would be limited. Most people had already left for the day, taking their vehicles with them. Still, a few remained behind unattended.

"Pick one. I'll drive. You lay down in the back seat." He said quietly.

"Alright..." She said looking at each vehicle "How about this one...its got a good sized back seat".

She wanted to lay down well curl up but that was the same thing. As she waited for him to get the car she tried to project into possible witnesses that there was nothing unusual going on. Hopefully it'd work well enough for them to get the car and get away.

Jett lowered himself into the drivers seat of their new ride. Not bothering with the seat belt, he placed his hand over the key ignition. A second later, the engine turned over. Letting out a sigh of relief he started to drive away.

It took only a few minutes to reach their home, but already Jett could see that their parents were gone as both cars were missing from the drive way. "Gem, I don't think we have much time. Mom and Dad are out looking for us right now. We need to grab what we need and book. Pack fast, and grab anything that we could pawn if needed. We'll need the cash." He said as he looked at the dark house in front of them.

She laid down in the backseat wondering what was going to happen to them. They might not be able to get very far on their own.

"Alright...I'll try to keep my mind open for them" She said "It'll give us some warning before they get here".

She climbed out of the car and hurried inside knowing that this was their only chance. Going to her room she only packed enough clothes to last a few days. The money she stashed away was still there and she grabbed it along with some jewelery. Taking a quick look around and grabbing a few more pawn-able items she went to her brother with a duffel bag over her shoulder.

Jett moved threw the dark house as if the world was after him. For all he knew, it was right now. Hitting his room, he started filling a large suitcase with clothing. Glancing at his bed, he decided to add a few extras for the car ride. Two pillows and a thick blanket were tuck under both arms as he came back out, the suitcase levitating off the ground.

Throwing the bedding in the back for Gem, he stuffed both bags in the trunk of the car. "Do you want to grab anything from the fridge or just get going? I won't be stopping until we're out side city limits. That should give us enough time to get away before the press gets a hold of the story." He said softly.

"I'd rather go" She said "Mom and dad are on their way back".

She could barely feel their presence but she knew that wouldn't last long. It was getting closer by the second and she didn't want them to be caught. She climbed into the backseat thankful that the car had tinted windows. The longer they went without getting caught the less likely she'd see a repeat of Jett's power too.

Jett said no more as he pulled himself into the drivers seat once more. Giving one last look at their home, he started the stolen car up and began driving. Knowing enough to keep under the speed limit, the car traveled down the darkening roads that lead out of town. Jett feared drawing attention to them by stopping anywhere, so he kept on going, waiting instead to reach the next city before stopping.

It was nearing dawn by the time he finally pulled into an out of the way motel. Rubbing his eyes, he let the car turn off so he could think. 'What next? Where to? How long can we run for?' Questions started screaming threw his mind as tears rolled down his face.

She'd fallen asleep during the drive the shock had worn off leaving nothing but exhaustion. Her sleep wasn't sound of course the images kept replaying in her mind of what happened to her eliciting silent sobs. As dawn approached and they made it to a motel her mind was hit with her brother's questions effectively waking her up.

"We'll run as long as possible" She said softly in response to his last question "And we'll go wherever we have to".

She knew his uncertainty and understood the questions they were the same ones in her mind. Sitting up she leaned forward and hugged him as best she could with his seat in the way. It was the only way she knew to comfort him.

"What we do next is get a room and you sleep" She told him "After that we'll worry about our next destination okay?".

His hand lightly patted her arm as Gem hugged him. His tears dried as her soft voice spoke to him, reassuring him that everything could be made to work out in the end. He swallowed before replying back. "I thought I was to be looking out for you after what happened, not the other way around." A small laugh left his mouth as he spoke.

"I'm not just tired, I'm worn out. I killed those guys, horribly, and I didn't even flinch till they died. What's worse, I'd do it again in a heartbeat for what they've done. I'm scared Gem, and I know you are too." Jett closed his eyes for a moment as he spoke, just wanting to feel is sisters touch for a moment more before they started moving again.

"Jett...you did what you did to protect me...and I'm thankful that you did..." She said softly "I am scared but it can't be changed we just need to keep going".

She didn't want to move again she wanted to get a room and relax even if she didn't sleep.

"We'll be fine Jett....I know we will" She said smiling "And we need to look out for each other...".

He was looking out for her in fact he'd done nothing but look out for her since they'd left. She was just consoling him trying to keep him from getting depressed or discouraged.

"I love you brother dear" She said smiling "What you did won't change that if you're wondering".

"And I love you my better half. I'm sorry for what I was thinking. When we get a room, would you please continue to hold me until I fall asleep? As it stands now, I don't think I could do so on my own." He replied as he looked into her face as she spoke.

"You're smile always brightens my day. Thank you for being better than me." He added, his voice gain the strength needed to carry on.

"Of course" She answered "I'll hold you".

She was so thankful for him he was her brother, her friend, and the only person she could trust in this world. Without him she knew that she'd still be in that back room with those bastards right now.

"I'm not better than you brother" She said softly "We are equal in our differences...but let's go...a nice comfortable bed waits for us".

She had enough money for them to stay in the room and she knew he'd be thankful for that.

Jett let his arm wrap around his sister and pull her in tight, fearful that something might take her away at any minute. The desk clerk asked only a few questions, not carrying what their business was provided the money was paid. Once the key was in his hand, Jett felt a small release of pressure from his mind.

The motel room was simple, clean and allowed for them to keep an eye on the road. Jetts' body nearly collapsed onto the bed, his energy drained from the events of the last day. "Hopefully we will be able to get further away before people think too much about us. Any more thoughts about where you want to go?" He asked as he pulled his body into a ball on the bed.

She relaxed once they had the key as well and walked with Jett to the room. Laying down on the bed with him she immediately held him close just like he'd asked.

"I...really don't know where I want to go" She said softly "I'd never thought of leaving before...but perhaps we can go across the country like you wanted to".

This would be as good a time as any to go after all there were no strings left to keep them down. She wouldn't miss home anymore and having fun would take both their minds off their predicament.

"Small towns are out of the question from here on dear sister. We need a big city to hide in." Jett replied as Gems' arms encircled around him. "What about Miami? There's tons of people who pass through everyday. We could find easy work, and use our powers if need be without anyone noticing. And then there are the beaches." Jett said, a small smile forming on his lips. "You always look beautiful in a two piece."

"Miami sounds nice" She said smiling "We need to be careful with our powers though".

She blushed when he mentioned how she looked in a two piece. It was flattering but right now she wasn't interested in showing her body off like that.

"Thanks" She said softly.

She knew he was right of course but her current frame of mind wouldn't let her think that.

With Gem holding him, Jett found sleep creeping in on him. His breathing started to settle down, and his mind stopped racing franticly.

"I'll try not to repeat what happened." He said as his eyes grew heavy. "Wake me if there's any trouble, and don't let me sleep too long. We need to keep going for a while before we can get comfortable enough to relax." With sleep almost upon him, Jetts' last words to Gem were "I love you."
