Junior prom. Not as big a deal as senior prom, but still pretty big. Especially for Cassie Clayton. She'd gotten a gig with the school to provide some live music in addition to a DJ, a suggestion that someone had made on account of Cassie and her best friend Ellie being a bit of a musical sensation locally and with a sizable online following. There had been a few small interviews on local television and radio, a few local performances. She and Ellie were hoping for a big break soon.
It had been the summer after eighth grade that both Cassie and her best friend Ellie had moved to this town for work-related reasons with their families, the same summer they had decided to start a band, and the same summer Cassie had begun her transition both medically and socially. For about three years now they had been building their career as Cassie had blossomed into womanhood. And while her anatomy still disagreed, there was little doubt that medical science had been turning the tide of the war between her mind and her genes.
She had everything packed and ready, heading over to Ellie's house to get ready. While Ellie was going with her boyfriend, Cassie was going solo, and more because of the paying gig than anything. She wasn't looking forward to it, though. Not really. Because she'd have to see Ellie dancing with her boyfriend all night. Cassie had no one. Very few people knew the truth about her, a few friends and the school administration, mostly. But her fear of rejection had Cassie keeping most people at a distance. But mostly she was jealous. Jealous that she wasn't the one dating Ellie. The two had grown up together as BFFs, even before Cassie had realized who and what she was.
She barely spared time to knock on the door to Ellie's house before opening it and heading in.
