Kagemusha Streets: The Pit Stop

Tetsuo laughed at Yui, but since she slapped him on the arm, he reflexively bent his crotch away from her swing, just to be on the safe side. He escorted her over to the machine, a hollow globe with telescoping hexagonal panels, some of which were translucent, and some of which were not. He held a visor in one hand, and reached out to her other. "Here, put this visor on and hold my hand so you don't lose your balance."

"Like I would," Yui laughed. "You've clearly never seen me play DDR."
Despite her words, she took his hand anyway, and leaned on him for support as she pulled the visor over her face. "Alright, now what?" When she put it on, she saw a brilliant blue light and experienced a full body ASMR. "Please Insert your Dreamscape Coin." said a voice that sounded like the ARIA computer on Kyle Hill's youtube channel. When she did so the voice intoned "This Dreamscape Coin is spiritually attuned to the user Yui Sakamoto. User not found in Sato VR database. Create Profile now?"

Yui shivered for a moment as the sensation washed over her. Her hand trembled with excitement inside Tetsuo, and she felt goosebumps forming on her exposed arms. Under the visor, she lifted an eyebrow. 'Spiritually attuned', huh? That was interesting. It took her a moment to register that it was asking for her input, distracted as she was by that thought. "Uh, yeah, let's do it!" For his part, though she did not see it, Tetsuo noted she had no profile. Interesting... it must mean she got one... back then? He made a note to ask her about it later.

A pretty standard dialogue box appeared, requesting that the user confirm having read terms of use and whatnot. It forced Yui to scroll down. The language of the terms of use is fairly standard, but extensive. It talks about fair use, piracy and all that. One of the unique declarations you won't find in any other TOU is that as long as your Dreamscape Coin is used, you can access your profile on any SatoVR compatible unit, however, you should use a globe for the best experience. Controllers making standard gaming consoles compatible are available for purchase on SatoVR.co.jp.

Yui scrolls quickly through most of that, barely paying attention to what it's saying - though she does laugh when she hits the section about other controllers. "Really, Tetsuo-kun, you put an ad at the start of your game?" She says out loud - while internally making a note to check that site out later. "Sorry." he said. "Just letting users know they don't have to buy a whole new console if they just by the controller for the existing console."

When Yui clicked through, her screen could be displayed on one of the TVs. This was apparently something permitted by the license agreement. The screen went away "SatoVR uses a full body haptic experience, including optional internal sensations. Do you wish to enable the optional internal sensations?" 'Internal'? What could that be about? Yui shrugged, and clicked yes. Might as well get the full experience, right?

Do you wish to enable optional injury simulation? Yui raised her eyebrow again, her hand hovering over the "yes" button. "I'm not agreeing to be tortured or something here, am I?" She asked Tetsuo skeptically. Before Tetsuo could answer, the machine intoned "The injury simulation falls within JISHA guidelines for electrical discharge of a product intended to simulate pleasure to a maximum of 20 volts. Please set the level on a scale of 1-10." Well, that didn't sound too bad. Yui hesitated for a fraction of a second more, but then, aware that Tetsuo and who-knows-who-else was watching her, cranked it up to 10. Whatever. She was sure she could take it.

"SatoVR has the capability to use your Haptic Profile and biometric scanners to create a base avatar for you to experience the world of Shadows of Kagemusha. The information is stored on secure servers that only SatoVR employees have access to. Do you wish to allow SatoVR to create your base avatar with this data?" "So my avatar's based on me? That's cool," Yui grinned. "Yeah, let's do that."

As soon as Yui consented, the globe went completely pitch black and she lost grip of Tetsuo. She felt a suction. For just a split second, it seemed as though her clothes were removed. This was reflected on the screen outside. Yui felt a very soft, comfortable, elastic fabric where her clothes once were. Her nude avatar stood in front of her eyes. It had everything she had. The right nipples and genitals, hair and eye color, and skin color. The only thing it lacked, was any scars that Yui had obtained in her real life. "Would you like to customize this avatar?"

"Wow." Yui's immediate feeling, once the weird suction had passed, was pure amazement. It was like looking in a mirror - that was really her, standing right there! She reached one hand to her stomach to feel the strange, elastic fabric that had replaced her clothes, while she stared at her nude doopleganger's form... and then she remembered where she was, and her face immediately flushed a deep red. If she was seeing this...
"Tetsuo-kun, you perverted jerk!" One hand flew up reflexively to try and cover her chest - which did nothing to cover the avatar - while her other hand flailed wildly in the general direction where Tetsuo had been standing in the real world. "You better not be broadcasting this!"

"I'm sorry!" he said. "Nobody has ever accepted both the internal sensations, and the Haptic Profiler!" after a few moments "You can turn those off if you like, those are why your avatar is naked." "It doesn't matter why it's happening, you moron!" Tetsuo's apology did very little to calm Yui down. Her one saving grace was that she'd finally turned her head away from the avatar to shout at him, giving everyone watching from her point of view one last view of her digitized breasts sweeping past before the camera turned to stare off into a void. While she continued to try and hit Tetsuo, Yui stabbed blindly with her other hand at the in-game controls, trying to find the "accept avatar" button - shouting loudly at Tetsuo the entire time. "Idiot! Lech! Dim-witted pervert! Turn the screens off!"

Yui suddenly became aware that she could hear her own screams. At that moment, Tetsuo stepped into action. He was not able to turn off all the monitors so he chose the next best thing. To accept the avatar creation from outside the unit by pressing a button on one of the panels. He knew that she would have the basic linen clothes and dagger all characters started with. Unfortunately for her, he accepted right as she yanked on her avatar's breast, pulling out to the maximum dimension of a J cup. The screen began to play a cutscene. Yui could feel the weight of her avatar's chest even in her Samurai Armor that had been given to her during the cutscene. It was obvious this would be legendary gear. Her avatar was run through. The injury simulator only produced a mild pain in her gut, but it shut down her visual cortex for a few moments to simulate unconsciousness. When she "came to" she was in the linens, in a pile of bodies, apparently about to be buried. The first thing she saw was how huge her avatar's breasts were.

Nevermind that. The place was so fucking nasty that rats had congregated. It appeared to be a cave, so maybe she wasn't supposed to be buried after and just dumped. Yui heard both dripping water, and running water. This was promising, as if she could find a pool of water, it might be a good idea to wash off. The olfactory simulation in this game was intense.

Yui hadn't really know what to expect from Hanako's answer, but it certainly hadn't been anything like the story she got! She stopped in her tracks for a moment, stunned - and had to jog to catch back up. "S-sorry, I had no idea," she apologized as she drew level with Hanako again; not that Hanako seemed particularly bothered by recounting that, but Yui still felt like she'd put her foot in something. A moment later she smacked her fist against her palm, outraged on Hanako's behalf. "What a bunch of jerks! I hope your brother kicked their asses!"

She continued to fume about it for the next few minutes, until the group came across the running trickle of water. Her mood immediately improved at the sight of it. She let out a happy cry as she darted forward to kneel by the stream, and immediately began splashing it on her arms and face, doing her best to wash away some of the grime from the pile of bodies. The warmth felt great against her skin; with any luck it meant there was a hotspring around, and she couldn't wait to see what the VR rendition of that was like. Not that she could take advantage of it properly while being broadcast, of course... but next time, in a more private session...!

Akihiro, of course, was more concerned with the wolves. She waved him off as he laid out some orders. "Sure, sure, whatever, be right behind you." She took another moment to run a handful of water across the back of her neck, delighting in the sensation, before climbing regretfully back to her feet and following after Akihiro, a short distance behind.

Up until the wolves caught his scent. As one bowled Akihiro over, Yui charged forward! She thrust her spear at the wolf's exposed flank with a loud shout, both hands on the shaft, aiming to impale the beast or drive it off Akihiro's body; ideally, both!

Yui attacks for blood!
2d6 - 1 (Sports) = 5.
Yui feels instant regret!

Hanako had a single tear in her eye, which any other person might have turned away from Yui if they'd noticed. Hanako did not think to shy away from shows of emotions, but it was perhaps true that she showed the wrong emotions most of the time. She nodded "Yes, it's true, they're assholes. They're still there. Never prosecuted for the crime. But my brother did kick their asses. They were too afraid of losing image they didn't even press charges. He kicked the absolute shit out of them... Then over the next several days, treated me like a goddamn princess. I was in a real fuckin' slump you know?"
Hanako suddenly shifted gears, as if something snapped "YOU KNOW WHAT?! FUCK THOSE GUYS!" she screamed, raising the spearhead above her own, and flinging herself at her foes. She lept, right around the time the wolf was shoved off of Akihiro, it somehow managed to be pushed directly in her path... which was honestly rather unfortunate for poor Hanako. She didn't seem to notice that she missed her mark however, as she landed on the wolf that was now clear of Akihiko, she began stabbing the ground which was conspicuously the same color as the wolves, even though the wolves were covered with a kind of goo upon closer inspection. It was really hard to tell what she was screaming about except for the fact that occasionally the word "serpents" came out of the indistinct rambling. There were no serpents here, so it didn't really make any sense at all.
Even in light of her failure, there is now a wolf who cannot attack ANYONE underneath her, a Hanako who cannot attack anything because what she is attacking won't fucking die!
Yui's attempt to shove the wolf worked, per the 5 being upgraded to the 7-9 result.
The Hanako story does not end there. If you would like to know more, it can be pursued in a Conversation thread

Akihiro shouted as he was knocked to the ground by the wolves. Because of the low pain settings of his equipment, he didn’t fee much from the attack. But that didn’t stop a low grunt from escaping his lips. It’s not like he turned off the pain completely. Probably increase if they start tearing him apart, like a new chew toy. He needs to escape before that happens.

The girls finally came to his rescue after moments of him struggling. Regal taking care of one and Hanako completely crushing another. Although, she wasn’t doing a good job of finishing it off. Her blind rage kept her from seeing straight.

Getting up off the ground, he attempted to drive his spear through one of the remaining wolves.

Suddenly Hanako screamed the Bethesda Guard Scream "WHY WON'T YOU DIE?!" then shoved off the wolf, to pull back the crude shortsword, realized it was broken, and stabbed the wolf she was on top of in the throat with her starter knife. It let out a hollow whimper like she'd just killed a puppy. Blood sprayed all over her tits like a Quentin Tarantino movie. There was one left. It saw the savagery, and backed into a corner growling, unsure whether to be more frightened of Akihiro or Hanako.

His spear was driven into the wolf, impaling it to the ground. He twisted it around a few times to make sure it died. Akihiro pulled his weapon out in time to see Hanako in her frenzy. He was almost too frighten to make a move on her. Keyword being almost. “Hanako! What’s wrong with you?!” He snatched her by the arm, trying to get her attention.

Hanako did stop. She breathed heavily "I was... raped. By a gang last ye-" the wolf apparently took the opportunity to murder Hanako's avatar. Or at least that's what the AI had in mind. As it lept in the air, something else happened. Yui...

... slid into the space between them to intercept the blow! She held her spear before her with both hands, turned so that the haft would block the wolf's jaws. Its paws struck her in the chest; the impact pushed the pair of them back a few steps as its claws tore into her linen top, sending a shock coursing through the haptic feedback system. Yui let out a pained gasp, but grit her teeth and kept her arms raised. The wolf's teeth were inches away, barely held back by the wood of her spear, its breath hot against her face.

"She's working through some stuff, Lecher-san!" Yui called out to Akihiro through ground teeth as she struggled with the beast, unable to turn away for even a moment. "Would you hurry up and stab this thing already?!"

Yui Stands in Defense:
2d6 + 2 = 7. 1 hold, spent to redirect the attack onto Yui.
New blood: 3/5.

After Akihiro made short work of the last wolves, a prompt popped up in front of everyone:

This quest marks the end of the demo. Your character progress has been saved for the full release. This area is a safe zone. Would you like to make camp?

Hanako's avatar winked out of existence, indicating that she clicked yes.

Yui let out a relieved sigh as Akihiro drove his spear through the last wolf. She heaved her spear to one side, dropping the wolf's body to the ground with a thud, then collapsed against a nearby rock herself with a triumphant, exhausted chuckle.

"How intense was that? Did you see how close that thing's teeth got?" She glanced over to Akihiro, buoyed by adrenaline and the thrill of victory, ignoring the end-of-demo prompt for the moment. The wolf's claws had shredded through part of her top, and she was holding what was left together with one hand. "Oh man, I can't wait to get ahold of this thing for real!" She pumped her other fist with a wide grin. "What did you think? Played anything that comes close to this before?"

Akihiro dropped his spear to the side after pulling it from the wolve’s corpse. A sense of relief washed over him once the text popped up in front of his eyes. “Other than the souls games? I haven’t.” He was still catching his breath and feeling himself coming down from a adrenaline high.

“Ignoring the bugs, I think the wait will be worth it.” Those are expected in just about any big game. Plus, this was just a demo. Any mistakes can be forgiven and fixed given time.

When Akihiro brought up the Souls games, Yui let out a short, barking laugh. "No, no, no!" She said, with a shake of her head and a wide grin on her face. "I'm talking about immersion. I mean, Dark Souls is super intense and all, and it's a super atmospheric world, don't get me wrong, but this..." She took a few steps towards the hot spring as she spoke, turning her back on Akihiro, and reached up to touch her cheek with her free hand. She could still the dampness of the water where she'd washed her face. "It's like we're actually here, doing these things! It's amazing!"

The whole Souls conversation had given Yui an idea, though. She glanced back over her shoulder at Akihiro, and her voice took on a smug tone - smugger than usual, at any rate. "You know, they're probably still looking for testers, and I happen to know Tetsuo-kun - SatoVR's CEO." Yui, of course, had no idea that the boy she was talking to already knew Tetsuo Sato better than she did. "I could talk him into giving you access... but you'd have to join the Electronics Club first, and there's one other condition..."

She drew her dagger and whirled around dramatically, grinning widely again as she faced Akihiro side-on and extended the blade towards him.

"You have to defeat me!"

An error message came on the screen "PVP not currently enabled. Please wait for the full release."
An all too familiar voice echoed through the caverns. "Try as you might, but there isn't any PVP in this game. There aren't plans yet. You're playing the 'civilian' version, which is currently in demo. The 'champions' version is also accessible in any SatoVR unit, but requires a blood sacrifice... Which Akihiro would need to enable full sensations for in any case. The ritual is nothing special, just an oath followed by spilling your own blood. Entering into a consenting PVP match would work for that."

"A... blood sacrifice?" Yui turned her face towards the ceiling of the cavern - it seemed the appropriate direction for looking at Tetsuo's disembodied voice - and raised a dubious eyebrow, deflating in disappointment. She'd have thought she'd misheard him if he hadn't repeated it twice, but there was no mistake - he'd definitely said 'blood sacrifice'. "What kind of weird game are you building here, Tetsuo-kun?" She muttered, under her breath.

With a disappointed sigh, she stowed her knife once more. "Boo. Never mind that idea, I guess." Her hand hovered over the quit button on the end-of-demo prompt, but before pressing it, she looked over to Akihiro one more time.

"Hey, Lecher-san..." Her expression had settled into something a little softer than he'd seen from her so far, and so had her tone, though she still wasn't bothering with his real name. "You know Orokana-chan IRL, right? Can you... check up on her, when we get out of here? She... seemed like she might need a friendly shoulder."

Her words hang in the air for the moment before she lifted her chin, her expression hardening again, and jabbed an accusatory finger at him. "But don't try anything perverted with her, got it?!"

“Thank god.” Akihiro muttered underneath his breath as the voice echoed through the cavern. He was hesitant to accept the offer and working up the courage to decline it. It was only his friend’s voice that saved him from eventual humilitation and defeat. Still, a blood sacrifice was still out of left field. “Probably just something for dramatic effect.” He reasoned, pulling up the player menu.

“I don’t know her very well, but I’ll see what’s up.” The two just became friends. He wasn’t going to pass up the chance of having a friend from the opposite gender. Not to date or sleep with. But to try to get others to see him in a different light. One where girls don’t see him as the antichrist.

“Ya ya.” Of course she would think that.

Yui didn't say anything else, but she did cast one last long, sideways look in Akihiro's direction - almost as if she were judging him, weighing up his response and determining whether or not she'd made a mistake in making her request. The silence stretched out for an uncomfortably long moment before she gave a slight nod, turned back towards her end-of-demo notification, and finally pressed the "log out" button. Her avatar winked out of existence.

As her avatar winked out of existence, a bard looking character in purple entered the cave from the side the light came from. Unlike the players who were all able to speak their lines, and unlike the goblins, who also spoke their lines, this character's dialogue was delivered through a box, with an old school sound effect somewhat like the message was being tapped out rather than spoken.
Soul of Kagemusha said:
"Curious. Three new people with souls strong enough to be Champions have all declined. I can't help but wonder how this bodes for us all... For 400 years, I have waited for this land to be cleansed. Yet longer I shall remain. A pity. Perhaps some other Champions will come later."
