Olive and Canaan sitting in a tree... (Ink x Degu)

"Alright, let's get back and get you home. I should have known better than to take you despite you asking." What was he thinking, taking not only a complete stranger, but a human to a dangerous place? She was so small, so fragile looking that he felt guilty for it despite not being responsible for her safety. What was wrong with him? The entire situation was confusing, it had to be the lack of sleep, there was no other explanation.

"I--What?" His hand stilled slightly on her back even as he continued walking, and Canaan glanced down at her with a bit of shock as they continued towards the café. "While I appreciate the trust you seem to have in me, you shouldn't be asking strange men to stay the night. You can't trust everyone, you know."

“But, you’re not everyone. And I don’t know why, but my gut is telling me to trust you. And my gut is almost never wrong.” She was slightly sad at the answer he had given, and starting pouting a little. “Besides, I have no one else is this damned city to stay the night with me. Not ones that I trust like I do you anyways.” She got a little teary eyed again, it hurt everytime she remembered she was pretty much alone here. She didn’t like dwelling on it. She eventually started playing with her hair to make herself feel better while they walked. Stroking it with her hands, using her fingers like the bristles on a comb. It made her feel a little less sad.

As they walked she could still feel his hand on her back. Shouldn’t ask strange men to stay the night he said. All while holding his hand on her back. What a weird man, with such weird boundaries. But he seemed to truly care for her, so she brushed it aside. He must just be hesitant is all. She was sure that he could convince him to stay eventually.

Good god, this woman was going to get herself killed being so trusting. Could he truly leave her alone in a city that he essentially protected from the worst of things? If she only knew what he had done to take care of the danger and death in that area.. Cursing himself internally as they returned to the café and reached his car, his hand fell away to unlock the vehicle before he cleared his throat.

"I could stay until you fall asleep. On the couch, I could stay there, and then lock up and leave. You really shouldn't be so trusting, though." She was a human, she didn't have the same senses as him, so why was she so readily trusting him? Simply because he was being polite?

“That’ll be great, you can stay in the bedroom if you like. I have a tiny desk there with a pretty comfy chair to sit on.” She was happy that he finally agreed. She could tell that he was still a little uncomfortable with the idea, but she was sure he’d warm up a little back at her apartment. She had plenty of snacks and a couple of movies they could watch on the tv in her room.

As she got into the car she continued playing with her hair a little more. This time not to calm herself down, but because she felt happy. Having someone watch over her while she fell asleep. It’s like having her own personal guardian angel. It was a comforting thought. Something about him just felt right to trust. It wasn’t based on anything logical or anything rational. Just a feeling in her gut that wouldn’t go away.

"I'm not sleeping in your room." The answer came far faster than he expected it to, and Canaan internally cringed at how it came out. Getting into the car and starting down the road he requested the directions politely from her, following them carefully even while his head spun. Honestly, what was wrong with him? The moment she was asleep he was going to leave, was going to lock her door behind him and high tail it home to hopefully get some sleep of his own that night. Granted, that was going to be several hours from now once she finally went to sleep and he could leave, but nonetheless.

"This is where you live?" He wasn't sure how he felt about her location as they arrived, scrutinizing it carefully. It wasn't that it was bad, and maybe he was just so used to owning his own home, but it wasn't the best, either.

“If you want to sleep, all I can say is I hope my couch is big enough for you.” She was really hoping that her couch was comfortable enough to sleep on. It was a very old cloth couch that she bought second hand from someone who was moving out from around here. It was pretty shitty, but it was also dirt cheap so she didn’t really care.

“Yup, this is home sweet home.” She opened the door to her little apartment and gestured to the room they were in. It was a tiny room with a couch to the right and a small coffee table in front of it. To the left was a fridge and a kitchen countertop with a sink. At the end of the room, directly in front of them, was the door to her room. It wasn’t much to look at, but it had a certain air of cosiness. At least to Olive.

“I’m gonna just quickly change into something more comfortable.” She raced off into her room, closed the door behind her and locked it up. She quickly got out of most of all of her clothes. Letting out a sigh of relief, as she took her bra off. She left her clothes in a little basket in the corner of her room. Putting on an oversized white t-shirt and a pair of light blue boyshort undies, she headed back out. “Much better! So did you wanna watch a movie or something?”

"No, there's no need for me to sleep, I'll be fine." The last thing he wanted to do was fall asleep in a stranger's house and wake up wondering just what was going on. A freak out first thing in the morning wasn't appealing at all, for more than one reason. "Most couches aren't big enough for me anyway, so I'm used to it." At his height, trying to stretch out fully on a couch usually resulted with his feet hanging off the edge.

"It's.. Definitely small, but I suppose you don't need much room, do you?" His eyes wandered to her briefly before he went back to observing the room, taking in the small details as she disappeared to her room. He gave only a grunt of acknowledgment, standing awkwardly in the living room with his hands tucked into his pockets. Hearing the sigh from the other room he chuckled, shaking his head and shuffling in place.

"You-" When she came back out in much less clothing than she had just been in Canaan blinked in surprise, a hand coming up to his mouth as he coughed. An expression of discomfort settled on his face as the same hand fell to wave in her direction and he took a small step backwards. "You're not wearing pants. You should wear pants around company, especially strange men." Either she was trying to seduce him, or she truly was that naïve, and he wasn't sure which was worse.

“What, pants? Who needs those in your own house. Besides I trust you to not do anything creepy to me.” She grinned from ear to ear, she loved being in her house clothes. It was so freeing to just hang around in a loose fitting shirt and no pants. She then gestured to him to come into her bedroom.

“Come on, let’s watch a movie. You can choose.” She then plopped herself down on the edge of her bed, sitting cross legged. She took the remote and turned on the fairly small television. She had a netflix account, so they had an almost unlimited library of TV shows and movies. Anything they wanted from comedies, action movies, documentaries, and even rom coms. She’d hoped that he would pick a rom com, they were her favorite kind of movie. When Harry met Sally, was by far her favorite. The way the two of them fell in and out of love, it made her heart warm.

"That doesn't mean you can do that around everyone. You shouldn't--Shouldn't trust people so easily." Just because he wasn't going to try anything unsavory with her didn't mean other people wouldn't given the chance, especially considering that she was a rather attractive woman. There was a brief moment that his eyes ran over her exposed legs before he looked away, not bothering to even take his shoes off as the jacket slid down his arms. It was far too warm to keep it on inside, but he wasn't going to get too comfortable by taking off his boots as if he intended to stay indefinitely.

"I.. Don't really watch movies. I wouldn't know what to watch." Half of his days were spent outdoors or in a daze, sometimes a combination of both. A seat was taken a bit stiffly on the edge of the bed as he kept his eyes away from her legs, leaning back a bit uncomfortably and staring at the television. This human was going to be the death of him, wasn't she? It hadn't even been more than a couple of hours since they'd met and already she was acting like they'd known each other for years. "Just put on whatever, I guess."

“50 Shades of Gray it is then, I didn’t get to watch it when it came out and was always curious about it.” All she’d heard about the movie was that it was about two lovers who were into bdsm. The people in her small town didn’t find that kind of thing interesting, and her parents certainly wouldn’t have let her watch that. From what she heard from her friends though, it was very kinky.

She put the movie on and decided to get into a more comfortable position. Shifting around on her bed, she ended up lying down facing the screen. Her head resting on her hands as her legs were moving up and down like an excited little girl. Almost forgetting that she hadn’t offered canaan any food.

She then got up quickly off of the bed and stood up asking “Do you want anything to eat or drink?” She still had a couple packets of snacks tucked away in the cupboard, and maybe a half of a six pack of beer. Also her favorite drink was always stocked up, Coke. “I’ve got some soda, beer and a couple of different snacks,”

"I have no idea what that is." He shrugged, hoping that it either wouldn't be terribly boring for him, or that perhaps it would bore her to sleep so that he could just go home. This was incredibly awkward that she was lacking pants and had invited him straight into her bedroom. Any other man would have read into it the wrong way, but he only smoothed back his messy hair and tried to concentrate on the movie.

"I'm fine. You really should put pants on though, you're showing a lot of skin and," He took a deep breath, looking frustrated with himself. "It's a bit awkward when I can see it out of the corner of my eye every time you move." At least with her standing more of her legs were covered, and he gave her a slightly strained smile. "You are far too innocent to be living in a place like this, little one."

“Well, for now this is the only place I can afford. Especially off of my salary as a waitress.” She left to go get herself a can of coke, and a bag of chips. She thought about what he said for a little while. About showing too much skin. She was always like this in her home, even back in her small town. No matter who was in their home, she’d always be in loose fitting clothing almost never wearing a pair of pants.

She came back into the room with the bag of chips and coke can in either hand. “There are plenty of ladies who show off more skin that I do though.” She laid back down on the bed and opened up the bag of chips, pointing them to Canaan offering them up. “Also, why are you looking out of the corner of your eye when I move?” She then continued watching the movie.

"That's irrelevant how much skin other women show. Those are other women, not you." He frowned, declining the offer with a wave of his hand. "When I see motion out of the corner of my eye it's instinct to look. I am a cautious person, unlike you, apparently." He was silent for some time as the movie played, but the moment it began to dip into more explicit sex scenes he cleared his throat and snatched up the remote.

"I don't think this is appropriate to be watching with someone you've just met." He hadn't realized that was what the movie was about, but it at least explained why it was so popular. "Are you getting tired yet?"

“I am cautious!” She pouted and continued eating her chips. It hadn’t occurred to her that certain people might think that she was flirting with them. Or trying to tease them. But after he said that, it all clicked in her head. “Ohhh. I’m not trying to flirt with you or anything by the way.” Trying to convince him that this was all just normal behavior for her. “I just much prefer being in something that doesn’t restrict my lower body. If you want I can put on a longer dress or something to cover up, if it makes you that uncomfortable.”

This was all happening while the movie took a turn to the raunchier side. She thought, oh that’s why everyone back home was so opposed to watching it. They were such prudes. She was interested to see what was going to happen next when Canaan switched it off. “I’m not tired yet, I usually sleep pretty late into the night.”

"I would prefer it if you put something longer on, yes. I may be a gentleman, but in the end I am still a man, and bare skin is quite distracting for most of us." Enough that he was beginning to feel like a creep sitting on her bed, turning his attention back to trying to pick out a different movie. Something, anything other than what had just been on.

"Here, this says it's some Hallmark romance, surely it can't be as crude as that last movie." Canaan grimaced, starting the movie and setting the remote back down gently. "You shouldn't stay up so late, it's bad for your health." Coming from him it was quite hypocritical, but it wasn't as if she knew that!

She headed to her dresser, passing in front of the screen. There were a couple of cute options, but she wanted to make sure he’d feel comfortable with them. So she asked “Which one would you prefer me wear?” Holding up two dresses. One was a sundress with a bright white base and a floral pattern on top. The other was a light blue blouson dress that probably came up to her knees. “Also, I know it’s bad for my health. But hanging out awake late at night is one of life’s many pleasures.”

As she said that her mind brought up memories of what she did late at night. She enjoyed late nights, usually by herself. Most of the highly pleasurable things in her life came late at night. Like binge watching movies, late night snacks, playing video games till ungodly hours, and some others ~ Her face settled on a little smile, before realising what she was thinking about in front of Canaan. Then it flushed with a bright pink colour

"Whichever is more comfortable," He gave her a quick glance and a wry smile. "I'm a man, we're not known for our sense of fashion. Most of us would rather see a woman's clothes on the floor than her body." Surely even she must know the nature of men in that aspect, or was she so completely innocent he had to spell everything out for her?

"Whichever one you'd like." He repeated the comment, a bit fascinated by the way that color seeped into her cheeks. For a woman who was casually walking around with no pants on in front of someone she hadn't even known a handful of hours, what could she possibly be blushing about now?

“Oh really now? I thought most men were supposed to be gentlemen and care about the women they were with.” She then walked towards her bathroom with the sundress in hand. She got in and locked in behind her. She quickly changed out of the shirt and into the dress. It fit nicely on her, but she didn’t really care much about how it looked tonight.

She exited the bathroom with the sundress on and threw the shirt over into the laundry basket. She then in a swift motion hopped back onto the bed, lying down. Quickly getting back to munch her chips. “Did I miss anything?” Tonight was a really comfy feeling night. And this time she got to spend it with someone else. She was never happier than this in all her time in the city.

"That's.. Not how the world works, sweetheart." Canaan gave her an almost pained smile, she truly was innocent, wasn't she? When she exited the room and went to change he took a deep breathe, inhaling and then exhaling to keep himself calm. As if humans weren't complicated enough, he'd managed to get saddled with the one that was both innocent and diabolical without meaning to be the latter.

"To be quite honest I wasn't really paying attention. I just put it on to get that other garbage off." How did people watch movies like that, they were basically just porn! At that rate you might as well just turn off the television and have sex with the person you watched it with. "Why did you move here?"

"Oh, the reason why I moved here." She sighed, as her mind played back all of the memories leading up to her moving out. Her face said everything, all that emotional baggage laid plainly for anyone to see. "I moved here because I didn't want to be stuck in a small town." It felt good saying it out loud, like she finally had someone to confide in. Someone that she could trust all of her darkest secrets with.

"I spent 18 years living in a small town of a population of about 150 people. Can you imagine that? Everyone knew everyone, and there were no secrets. Every day was the same routine. It was a boring life." She felt so relieved as she rambled on, it felt like a giant weight was off of her chest. "Sorry for rambling on like that, it's just that I didn't really like that place."

“That would drive me insane. I actually moved around because I was tired of being around so much of that for so long of my life.” Far longer than she could imagine, but that was beside the point. “A lot of family and their friends, it was hard to do anything without being judged for whatever you'd done in your past.” When you lived longer than a normal human that left room for a lot of things to dwell in your past, and therefore room for more bothers. There was a reason he'd become a loner and he very intended to keep it that way, although this one human had complicated that matter for the current day.

“You don't need to apologize.” He shook his head, still watching the television absently. It wasn't that he was truly watching the movie, more so that he needed something to keep himself distracted from the many thoughts inside his head. “As long as you stay out of the bad parts of town you should like it here. That cafe is a nice addition, and there are some movie theaters as well, I believe. For now we can just watch this.” He fell silent and began to watch the movie, although there were periodic glances made in Olive's direction throughout the film.

She watched the movie with such intent. When the couple on screen shared their screen her heart melted away. “Aww, I wish I could have something like that.” She had not meant that to be said aloud. Her face quickly flashed a bright pink. She’d hoped that he hadn’t noticed. But he definitely did, the distance between them was only a couple inches.

To distract her brain from going into overdrive, she decided to ask him a question. With relationships being on her mind all she could come up with was. “Do you have a significant other?” All her classmates back in high school had boyfriends and girlfriends throughout the years. But she never did, her reasoning being she just never had that gut feeling. The one where you know they’re a keeper. And she was just waiting for that day to come.

It didn’t matter if it was a boy or girl. Nothing mattered really, not their looks, their job, their history. She just needed that gut feeling. They’d come eventually, she thought. She was a hopeless romantic and definitely way too optimistic for her own good. But that’s just how she lived, be optimistic and good things will come.

Canaan's head turned at her soft squeal over the movie, a chuckle leaving her lips at the sound. So that hadn't changed, human women still turned into mush when they saw something they deemed cute. It didn't surprise or bother him at all, but what did surprise him was the question that she asked him so suddenly. Did he have anyone? The surprise was evident on his face as he hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck before he slowly shook his head. While he had no intent to go into details about his personal life or tell her things she wouldn't understand, he could manage a vague answer to satisfy her curiosity.

“No, I don't. I did once upon a time, but as with everything else, that came to an end.” An end he couldn't say he would ever be happy with, but life could be cruel to all who had the gift of it. “It was a long time ago.” That much was true, so he wasn't technically lying. “I'm not concerned with finding myself a partner at this point in life, so it's not really a big deal.”

“Oh, I was there throughout all of my friends’ breakups to help them through, and since we’re friends now. I’m here for you too.” She felt a little sad for him. She saw what breakups could do to your emotions. Some of her friends grew bitter and resentful, while others wallowed in their sadness and regret. And there were the very few, who took it all in stride and just moved on. She hoped that Canaan was part of that last group, but they are a very rare bunch.

“I get being ok with being single. I’ve been alone pretty much my whole life. But I wouldn’t be closed off to the idea of a boyfriend or a girlfriend~” She didn’t really know what else to say. Her last sentence trailed off as she continued watching the movie. Her chips finished and her coke drained dry.

“You sure you don’t want to stay the night? It’s getting pretty late, and if you want you can take my bed. I’m small enough that I can fit very comfortably on the sofa.” She was concerned for him, but she also had other reasons why she wanted him to stay. She felt safe around him, no longer a lonely little blip in the big city.

"I appreciate the sentiment, but it's quite alright." He gave her a tight lipped smile and shrugged. "You are young, you have plenty of time to worry about a relationship later. Life doesn't require you have a partner just to be happy, there are other ways to be happy." He sighed wearily, glancing around as he spotted the darkened sky outside.

"I will not be taking your bed, no, that is absurd." Canaan gave her an incredulous look, standing from the bed and stretching. "I will use your couch for a short while until you've fallen asleep, and I will leave my number somewhere should you have need of me again. Just don't go inviting strange men over all the time, or I might not feel so special anymore." He chuckled, although he was quite unsure of why he was jesting about such things. "Good night, Olive."
