[Bio] There is more than one Rascal.
The bipolar young man's personality shifts in a sinusoidal manner. There are 3 different incarnations of Rascal that you might encounter; manic, depressed, and equilibrium.
So, you know that kid in class who is likely a super genius, but afflicted by the worst form of ADHD you've ever seen in your life? That's Rascal van Halen #1. Manic Rascal is how a lot of people tend to remember or think about him since it is the incarnation of him that stands out the most. Rascal is exceptionally bright, but it is often hidden by a very eccentric, zany personality. Although he gets exceptional grades, he has a penchant for getting himself into trouble with his flights of curiosity and overactive imagination. He has a tendency to obsess over certain things (usually reading or accomplishing some kind of goal) when he is manic and can also be hypersexual to the point of insatiability. In this state, he often gets very little sleep; sometimes even going a couple of days straight without sleeping (thereby exacerbating his mania or leading to a crash the puts him in a depressive cycle). Despite being so bombastic though, his manic self can be the most charismatic, charming, uplifting, and domineering incarnation of Rascal. Although mania tends to make him an almost unstoppable force to contend with, it also makes him extremely impulsive, neglectful of things that fall outside the purview of his hyperfocus, and can get lost in rage if conditions allow.
Rascal #2 is in many ways the opposite even though he's still the same person. When he's manic (and to some extent, even at equilibrium), he's a diehard optimist -- but when depression kicks in, everything seems to crumble within. Self-loathing and dwelling on perceived failures as well as conditions around him spur him into feeling numb. In this state, he's much more passive and lacking the energy to put up a fight over anything. He can become very reserved and second guesses himself on virtually everything. He's much less likely to recognize if someone is flirting with him and is much more likely to assume that people around him harbor ill views toward him. Although his manic and depressive selves can share hypersexuality (in the case of depression, often as one of the few ways to temporarily feel okay -- but his sex drive can also potentially crash during depression instead), he isn't likely to pursue sex with someone unless they straight up throw themselves at him. When he's like this, he can lay in bed for long stretches of time and eats very little. Although he isn't outwardly pessimistic and tends to tell other people uplifting things about themselves, he finds it impossible to feel it about himself.
The last incarnation of Rascal is probably the "truest" state if you consider the equilibrium to be who he "truly" is (debatable). At equilibrium, he is charming but in a much more subtle and coy manner. He isn't nearly as much of an attention magnet, but he has a bit more of a laid back coolness to him. His flights of curiosity and overactive imagination are still around, but don't utterly consume him. He's quite rational, but not nearly as unwavering as when he's manic. It'd be best to describe him as playful and cheeky more than anything else. Although this is the equilibrium of his states of mind, it is a state that often doesn't last for very long. In this state of mind, it is almost impossible to anger him and he has great long-term thinking that can sometimes save the day for when he becomes more impulsive or hopeless.
Raised on the farthest end of human civilization, Rascal had never even met a monster. To some extent, Rascal was quite sheltered, but in other respects, he was thrown right into the world without a life vest. His parents died in a car accident when he was only 6; he survived the accident with just a single scar behind his ear that isn't easily seen due to the length of his hair. With no other living family members, he spent the next 11 years in foster homes. On the surface though, that hardship wouldn't be apparent to anyone looking at him. In his circumstances, he had to learn how to fend for himself quickly and effectively. It built an air of confidence and eccentric defiance to him that drove him every step of his life. He developed a smart mouth, quick wit, fearlessness, and a lifelong fascination with learning. It served him well in school.
Once he got to high school, he attended an all-boys Academy for gifted students on a merit-based scholarship, maintaining straight A's. Academics became an escape for him and he learned to study no matter how much noise and drama went on around him. Rascal developed a fascination with science in particular, and saw himself as an astrophysicist one day. Despite most of his classmates coming from privileged backgrounds, he stood out among the pack and had no trouble fitting in. Few people knew about his tough living situation. He even joined the high school wrestling team. It all masked what he came up from. Going to an all-boys school did limit dating options, but he managed to get around enough.
The Interspecies Cultural Exchange Program took interest in him as a candidate due to his exemplary record. He didn't apply for it himself, but names were requested for high-achieving students who might be good candidates for the program. Out of thousands of candidates, Rascal was one of the few students who was chosen for the program. Of those selected, he was one of the only ones to actually agree to participate once it was brought to his attention due to latent human bigotry. Rascal saw it as an opportunity though; his dorm and expenses would be paid for by the program and he'd get to see another part of the world. Seemed like a win-win to him. In truth though, he had no idea what to expect.
