Colder than the Snow ((me and Houdini))

Senka listened to him speak, just listened. His wife did sound like someone could fall in love with, probably very easily at that. Probably the total opposite of her current self. She felt hims move closer and cuddle up to her as he spoke. She did not object to it. The story was probably a tender memory, she wouldn't upset him further.

"She sounds like a very kind individual, just like...Dmitri" she said for the first time naming her fiancee.

"She was," he agreed. "I missed her every hour of every day. You may think I don't, when you see the steely persona I front as an interrogator. But she never leaves my thoughts."

He didn't realize who she was talking about for a moment. "Dmitri... that must be your fiancee. The more I think about it, I suppose our lives, our lost partners, are alike in some ways." He stopped and thought for a moment, connecting some dots in his mind. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but Dmitri has something to do with whatever you hide under your blouse, doesn't he?"

Senka looked down a little and she said "Yes...he dose". She looked at him and said "It is very dear to me" she said softly. She looked down for a moment and closed her eyes for a moment. She looked at him and said "It gives me comfort" she said to him softly.

He was glad she had been willing to open up to him about whatever it was she was always hiding, although she didn't volunteer to him what exactly it was under there. He ran his fingers through her bright red hair, his finger getting stuck on a knot every so often, as neither of them had properly bathed in a couple of days. "I understand the need for something, whatever it is, to bring a measure of comfort." He rubbed her back a little bit next. "Why don't you get some sleep. I'll stay awake and keep guard, it's been a tough morning for you."

Senka felt his hands running through her hair. She heard him speak and said "Alright" she said. "I'll rest" she said softly. She then closed her eyes and used her arms as a pillow, falling asleep slowly.

As Josef watched her sleep, her body moving up and down a little with each breath, he found it very comforting. Even though they were just taking about his lost love, this Russian was starting to seem like a substitute for all of the feelings that were being dredged back up. He got up quietly, careful not to wake Senka, and went outside. He sat outside for several hours, mostly thinking, resting mentally. When he thought he heard a stir inside, he went back to the shelter. "How are you feeling, Senka?", he asked.

Senka stirred a little and she opened her eyes. She looked up at him and said "I'm fine, do you want to keep moving?" she asked crawling out of the shelter and standing up slowly. She felt a little better about having confided in him about her past. She felt at ease with it.

"Yes, let's see if we can at least cover a little ground before nightfall," he replied. "Staying here too long might be dangerous." He held out his hand and helped her up, glad to see Senka feeling refreshed. He quickly got their things together and they got ready to head off. "So how do you stay clean when you're out in the wild here?" he asked, a little curious about hygiene, particularly now concerned about making a poor impression on Senka, as the effect of three nights without a bath started to take an effect on him.

"Rain..." she said with a shrug. "If we can find a stream or a water hole or something then you can bathe in that I suppose,, otherwise, you just have to stick it out. you could also go to a bathhouse somewhere, but that might be a little risky" she said with a sigh. "Most of the time me and my partner had to keep hidden so bathing wasn't really an option" she said shrugging. She picked up her pack and put it on her back and began to walk.

"I see", he said, coming to terms with the fact that bathing probably wasn't in his immediate future. After trudging on for a while, he remarked "I don't think we're going to make it to the next town by nightfall, after the incident." He rubbed his gloves together, as it seemed to be the coldest night so far, since they had been together. "Are you ready to camp for the night?" he asked after a bit longer.

Senka looked at him and said "Lets walk a little more" she said to him. She continued to walk on for a another half hour or so before she found another secluded spot and said "Lets camp here" she said looking at him. She pulled her coat around her and looked around for a moment.

Josef was exhausted, and not exactly in the mood for building a new snow shelter. He looked around. "I think I see a small cave against the mountain!." He went over to investigate, and sure enough, there was an opening in the side of the mountain with a dry floor. It was small, but the dry spot was large enough for two people to sleep in. "This seems like a good place to spend the night," he suggested to Senka. "It's freezing more than before, though. I think we are going to have to really huddle together for warmth."

Senka followed him up the mountain side to the cave. She looked about and nodded and said "This looks good" She put down her pack down in the dry area and pulled out a bedroll. She rolled it out before she pulled out a blanket to put over her.S Lay down, leaving him enough space.

He lay down on his own blanket, shivering next to her for a few minutes, noticing she was doing the same. He cleared his throat. "Do you think if we slept next to each other inside the blankets, it might keep us warmer?" he asked, really wanting to find some warmth on this freezing night, yet also strangely craving the comforting feel of her body alongside his.

Senka looked over at him and nodded and opened her blanket for him to move under. "Come on" she said to him, telling him to get under.

He looked over at her, and quickly accepted her invitation, bringing his blanket over and doubling them up, also taking off his coat and laying it over them, so as to absorb more body heat from Senka. "Thanks," he said softly, curling up next to her, his face in the back of her soft neck.

Senka felt him shift and put his blanket and jacket over them. She felt him move up close and she closed her eyes and said "Night". Her fingers reached into her shirt to hold her ring once more. She slowly fell asleep, breathing evenly and softly.

Josef fell asleep to the sound of her soft breathing. Sometime during the night, his hands must have out of habit wrapped their way around Senka. As he gradually woke to the first rays of dawn, he felt wonderfully warm, his body flush with hers under the blankets, protected from the freezing cold outside. Groggy and confused, he kissed her ear. "Good morning, love," he mumbled in half-sleep.

Senka stirred a little as the suns rays entered the cave. She felt something warm wrapped around her. She seemed to blush lightly and even more so when he kissed her ear and called her love. She sat up a little and shook him a little. "Come on, wake up...". He was still sleeping, he probably thought he was someone else, that someone would probably be his deceased wife. She sighed a little to her self and looked at him.

Josef was jolted into reality by Senka's words. He grunted, pulling himself away from her quickly. He blushed deeply, stammering: "I... it was.. I'm so sorry, I was really confused." He stood up out of the blankets into the freezing cold air. He let out a shiver before sitting down against the wall of the cave. "There's something comforting about waking up next to someone," he explained. "It was quite subconscious. Although, I have to say, even in the conscious world, you've been quite comforting to me these last few days. Your face isn't a bad one to wake up to," he added with a nervous smile.

Senka looked at him as he woke up and was back in reality. She listened to him and when he said her face was a nice one to wake up to she seemed to blush ever so lightly before she said "Thankyou...I'm glad you find me comforting..." she said looking at him. "I feel somewhat the same..." she said softly. She smiled and said "We should get moving I suppose" she said begining to pack up.

He saw her blush and enjoyed her soft smile, something he would have never been treated to seeing from her only a few days ago. She had a nice smile, he thought. "Yes, let's get going. If we start early, we should make it to the next town by nightfall." He got his things together and headed over to the entrance of the cave, standing in the sunlight, glad it made things at least a little warmer.

Senka put her pack on her back and she followed him out of the cave. She looked around for a moment, just getting he bearings before she headed off in the right direction, moving down the mountainside a little. "Come on" she called to him.

He followed her out into the wild again. It was going to be a long day of travel. As they walked briskly along, he pulled out two oranges from his knapsack, as well as two pieces of bread. He handed one of each to her without breaking his stride. "Here you go Senka," he said. "So where do you hope to end up tonight? Another shoemakers? Or a baker's house? Or maybe out in the cold. You don't seem to mind that too much," he said with a chuckle.

Senka took the food he handed to her and bit into it. She heard him speak and she chuckled and said "It's becouse I'm used to it, I'm no stranger to being out in the cold for extended periods of time" she said to him with a chuckle. "I've had to hang around in the cold for days on end"
