Colder than the Snow ((me and Houdini))

Senka looked at him and thought for a moment. She closed her eyes and thought. She knew this was her best chance at escaping. She knew sometime along the line she would want to return home to her people. In that case she would wait as he asked, for him to go his separate way.

"All right...you have a deal...lets do it" she said a devious glint in her eyes.

His anxiety mounted as he watched her consider his offer and finally accept. However, once she agreed, it was no time to relax. The plan he had proposed to her meant danger and discomfort, not to mention leaving all that he knew behind. He brought the two plates over to the small dining area and laid them down. "Come sit over here at the table. Let's eat first. You must be quite hungry"

He hoped deep in his heart that was not making a mistake in trusting her. Senka was skilled at surviving in the outdoor, and no doubt would be greatly valuable should she return his trust. "What is more fearful to you? Being in prison, or braving the countryside along to escape?"

Senka looked over at him and she stood up and sat across from him. She looked down at the plate of food he had made for her. She picked up a fork and began to eat slowly. She looked up at him when he asked her the question. "Being stuck in a cell, able to do nothing is what I fear more out of those to" she said to.

"Yes, I imagined this would be a better alternative for you." He took a sip of wine in between bites of food, then stood up and refilled both wine glasses. "You realize that we must leave tonight if we are going to do this. If they see me going around the camp over and over again with you, they will suspect something is going on."

He wondered again how they would stand a chance of making it. Either side might kill them if they were discovered by a military unit. And that was not to mention the bitter cold. Yet he thought it was preferable to the pain his conscience might inflict on him should he stay. He took a few more bites off his fork.

Senka looked at him and ate a little more before she thought for a moment. She then looked at him and said "Disguise me...get me a uniform or something, what those female doctors wear, then we could practically walk out of here" she said thinking. Of course, she had just made this plan on the spot, it was no where near perfect or a full proof course of action, it was just an idea. She drank a little more wine before she ate some more thinking.

"I've already thought of that", he responded. He had secretly picked up a German uniform from the commissary earlier in the day. He went to the closet, pulling open the door and removing a neatly pressed green uniform top and skirt, along with a beret. "You can put it on in the back as soon as you finish. Hopefully no one will know the difference in the dark. I think you should pack something else though. I don't know how warm that skirt will keep you in the cold."

"I also packed some goods to bring along: a small tent we can use, some canned foods, canteens, matches for fire, and a few other things I suspect will prove useful. All soldiers undergo wilderness training. I hope I can put it into practice now", he finished with a nervous smile as he sat back down at the table and finished off what remained of his meal.

Senka looked at him was he pulled out the uniform from the closet. She looked at him when he said she should take somethign else. She then said "Like that, I have nothing else" she said with a sigh.

When he came back she began to eat slowly. She thought for a moment and finished of her own meal before she sighed to her self for a moment and looked back at him for a moment. The logical pat of her brain could not believe she was in liaison with a German. She sighed for a moment and thought.

"We carn't hope to survive with out some form of weaponry" she said,

"Well I have an extra pair of heavy pants if you'd like to bring them along. They are the type our parachuters use. They are designed for men of course, but its the best I could do." He sighed, trying to avoid thoughts of whether he was marching out to his death, or the death of both of them. He made himself feel better by remembering that Senka would have died in prison anyway, so if she died out there, at least he would have given her a chance. It was only his own life that he was taking into his hands, and he could live with that.

"I hadn't thought too much of weaponry. In my line of duty, my mind is my weapon. I have my service pistol of course. But I could locate something else quickly for you while you change. What do you suggest?", he asked, feeling it best to leave this choice up to a more expert combat soldier.

Senka nodded at him when he said that he had some pants. She looked at him when he spoke of weaponry. She then said "Well...I'm trained to be a sniper...somethign along those lines would be best" she said to him.

"But I hardly doubt you could get one of those with out anyone noticing" she said.

"Yes Senka, I agree that a rifle would arouse some suspicions, since that's not exactly in my usual line of work. Do you think a Luger would do? I know the guard at the munitions building, and before anyone checked into this tomorrow, we'd already been gone. If you must have a rifle, I'll see what I can do, but it will be riskier."

He finished up his plate and picked up hers as well, seeing that she had cleaned it off, taking them both to the sink. "I hope you enjoyed your meal. I'm not much of a cook."

Senka looked at him and said "what ever you can get is fine" she said to him. She watched as he picked up her plate. "It's better than starving" she said as he said he wasn't much of a cook.

"Quite a compliment", he chuckled, knowing that she was only being honest - his cooking was really bad, he wasn't just being modest in saying so.

"I'll be right back, I'll see what I can find you in the way of weaponry. Feel free to get changed while I'm gone if you want." He headed out the door to the munitions building. He thought this would be the moment of truth. If she was just playing him, she probably would be gone when he got back. But if she were still there waiting, he decided he could trust her to a certain degree.

Leila looked at him and watched as he left. She nodded. Once he was gone she sighed to her self. Her fight or flight reaction kicked in and for a moment she felt the strongest urge to run. But the logical side of her brain told her it would be stupid to do so, and he was her best chance of getting out of here alive.

She looked at the uniform with disdain before she began to take of the prison uniform and put on the military one. She put her hair up in a bun under the cap, as was protocol and looked at her self in the mirror. She wouldn't stick out so much if her hair wasn't red.

Josef walked out into the cold night towards the munitions building. He encountered Franz, the guard, a casual associate of lower rank who he had played cards with a few times. "I've misplaced by pistol and need another one", he told Franz, trying to act as casual as possible. Franz waved him in, saying "help yourself". Josef was starting to think of himself as more of his own agent, and the thought passed quickly that if he put a bullet in Franz, he could take whatever he wanted, grenades, rifles, anything, and be long gone before anyone noticed. But he couldn't bring himself to do it to a unsuspecting fellow German.

Once inside, though, Josef realized that he could probably conceal a rifle under his long winter coat without being detected. After all, Franz would not be suspicious. He quickly tucked one under his coat and went back out carrying the Luger in his gloved hands, and the rifle under his coat. Franz said nothing. As Josef approached his building, he realized this was the moment of truth. Would she be there. He opened the door. "Hello", he said, propping it open.

Senka waited for him patiently for return. She sighed to her self as the instinctual urge to run escalated, yet she remained where she was and waited. When he returned she turned around when she heard the voice. She looked at him as he had returned and said "So, ho did you go?" she asked him.She had dressed in the uniform as he asked. She felt odd being in the enemies colors.

"Well, Hello", he said to her. "You look like quite the dashing German medic", he teased her. He looked closely at her for a response. She didn't seem like the type to take a joke, but he was trying to loosen her up a bit. He examined her more closely, and noticed that without such a heavy uniform on, and with her hair up in a neater bun, she had quite a pleasing appearance.

He opened his coat, revealing the rifle he had concealed underneath. "I hope this will do", he said with a smile.

Senka frowned a little at that and said "Oh hush you" she said. She sighed to her self and she watched as he showed her what he had managed to smuggle out. She looked at him and said "Yes, it will do perfectly" she said. She looked at him and said "So how are we going to get out, not like I know where to go" she said.

"OK, well I have a knapsack prepared for each of us," he said, retrieving them from the back and tossing one to her. "There are only two buildings between here and the fence of the camp. They both belong to captains. We only need to get by them, so just keep low to the ground until we pass the two buildings. After that, we can hop over the fence, it's not guarded in that area, since that section is away from the prison area."

He led the way out the door, and ducked close to the ground as he walked past the two mentioned buildings, motioning for her to follow.

She cought the bag he tossed to her and she put it on her back. He nodded when he explained what was happening to her and said "I alright" she followed him when he made sure the place was clear and walked silently through the snow behind him, keeping her head down.

Once they passed the two buildings, Josef tossed his sack over the chain link fence and hopped over it. "Toss me your bag", he whispered through the fence to Senka.

She nodded and tossed her bag over and she climbed over the fence her self, the skirt making the task as little more difficult than normal, but she made it over fine.

He tossed the bag back over to her. "We only have until morning before they come looking for us", he panted. There is a stream about a ten-minute walk back. We need to get there and walk on the ice, or they'll track our footprints, he said, leading the way. Their breath wafted up into the cold night air as they trudged through the snow. "I think we should move for half the night, and try to get a few hours sleep before dawn."

Senka put the pack back on her shoulder and she nodded. She looked at him and said "Lets go" she said following him. She looked at him and said "I agree...we'll need to find a spot where they won't spot us easily" she said. She followed him, looking around and keeping a sharp eye out. She then said "You should probably give me the rifle now, no point in you carrying weight you don't need" she said.
