The Princess of the nation needed a new bodyguard. Sir Garret had perished when his steed had been shot with a crossbow, and he was dropped into the river in full plate armor. No knight could get up from that. The armor was that heavy. He had been on the way to a jousting competition in the neighboring kingdom in the west.

Sir Alex, the Azure, was the current jousting champion now that Garret had passed. Alex had faced Garret several times in the final round, but never won. Alex was best with the glaive and sword, neither of which were used when passing lances in friendly competition.

The six most well-known knights of the kingdom were all lined up before the thrones, knelt in a perpetual bow. The princess was to choose her next knight.

Princess Aida Zariel sat on the throne next to her father,King Melchior as she scanned the line of knights before her.She didn't seem to excited but that wasn't unusual. She didn't seem to want to pick any of the suitable warriors in front of her.

King Melchior saw the lack of enthusiasm in his daughter so he decided to pick one himself. He got up and walked towards the line of knights and stopped at one"You,You're the new jousting champion are you not?"

"Only because Sir Garret is no longer among us. May he rest in peace." Alex bowed deeper out of respect for the fallen comrade. As with pretty much all those who went too soon, Garret was an exemplary knight, and a great friend.

"I believe a new competition should be held soon in Sir Garret's honor. He was far better with a lance than I, or any knight."

"mmm...yes.It was a shame what happened but he died with great honor. If he had not stepped in it would have been my daughter that we would have buried"Melchior said.Aida lowered her head as she thought about that day, still thinking that it was her fault that sir Garret died.

"Yes,it shall be done"Melchior motioned for the other knights to depart"Rise young man and tell me your name"

Alex stood and was tense at attention. "I am Alex Zerkova, the Azure. Firstborn of Melchas the Bastion." Pretty much every knight had some overly long way of introducing themselves. Alex was the shortest of them, actually. In stating a name, they also had to state their lineage. Alex's father had been a part of the defensive line in the south during an attack sixteen years ago. Melchas was no more. Formality was a pain, but it was necessary.

"ahhh yes.You shall make a fine addition"Melchior said with glee"You are to protect my beautiful daughter.Defend her with your life as Sir Garret did"Melchior turned to face his daughter as he placed his arm around Alex. Aida who was still sitting on her throne, her hands on her lap just stared nonchalantly at her new bodyguard.

"As you wish father"Aida said as she slowly sat up."I shall be going to my room now"Aida bowed respectfully to her father before heading to her bedroom.

"you shall start immediately."Melchior went back to his throne"You will escort the Princess to the eastern land where the prince is waiting to meet her and hopefully purpose to her"

"Yes My Lord. I shall serve without question."

Alex bowed again. Now as the bodyguard for the princess, she would have another metal-clad shadow to escort her pretty much everywhere. As the princess left, Alex picked the glaive off the ground and followed her. The knight was five paces behind, not wanting to crowd her.

However, Alex could not speak to reassure her. Not until the princess spoke would the knight respond.

Aida did not say word as she went into her bedroom, not seeming too happy with her fathers decision but it didn't matter who he picked. She still would have disapproved. It was the same for many other things in Aida's life which was why she was 25 and still not married or engaged. She did not seem to be able to choose a proper suitor and she didn't know why.

Alex was far younger than the princess at the age of eighteen. When the princess entered the room, Alex turned around and stood at the door. A knight was not to enter the bedroom of course. A princess needed her privacy. So Alex would simply stand guard. Being the personal knight of the princess was hard work.

Aida sat on the bed, thinking about tomorrow and dreaded the thought since she already predicted the out come of her meeting with the prince of the eastern land."...S-Sir Alex is it?"she called out though the door to her bodyguard.

"Is everything okay, Princess?" Alex turned to talk through the door. The princess had never really shown favor to the knights. Sir Garret was probably the closest to her, and even he had no idea how she worked. "Is there something I can do for you?"

"Yes, Princess." Alex took a deep breath before entering the room and shutting the door after entering. The knight bowed then, taking the deep kneel as always. How many had been in this room outside of the king, queen, and the princess? Maybe a serving maiden too. Not even Garret had been in there.

Aida glanced at Alex then quickly turned her head away when she felt her face becoming warm.A shade of crimson appeared across her cheeks as she looked away"S-So,you my new bodyguard?"She said as she tried to hide her blush.

"Yes, Princess. I hope I am satisfactory." The knight bowed deeper, head looking straight at the ground. It was a bit hard to flex so much in the plate armor that was worn for ceremonial sake. It was restrictive and heavy. It was what got Garret killed.

Aida said nothing as she his her face more, felling herself blushing deeper"My apologies,I just never had a man in my room before..j-just my father"she confessed to explain her shy behavior. She didn't know why she was acting this way or even let Alex in her room in the first place.

"I understand. Your father has been rather eager for you to accept a marriage proposal for the good of the kingdom. We've been in tough times after the war with Naran. The people have been looking up to the kingdom for a sign that things will be better soon. And they shall, they just don't see what we know. We've forged many alliances with our neighbors. Although I have to say, it should not be the princess moving out to meet with a prince, but rather the prince who moves. Bandits are far more likely to attack the entourage of a maiden. Especially one so powerful and beautiful as you." Alex was a bit surprised at having spoken that much, and that frankly to the princess. It was rare fr Alex to talk much.

Aida face was an ever deeper shade of red when Alex said the she was beautiful"y-yes that is true for the Prince to go to the Princess but I hear that the King of the eastern land has fallen Ill and he dose not want to leave his fathers side. However I do feel that no matter who goes to who,I can already predict the out come"Aida said, feeling slightly more comfortable

"Princess, you've seen quite a few princes, nobles, and even knights already." Alex was still in the down position, because quite frankly it was easier to stay down in the armor than it was to get back up. "You've not found one that was satisfactory. Many of them have been devoted and caring towards you. What is it that seems to keep you away from them all?"

"So you're a romantic then? I see." Alex understood the feeling. The knight had read many stories. And so many had true love. Love at first sight. Alex was a bit more realistic, but it was nice to dream.

Aida just nodded shyly"Yes you see,I'm not looking to marry for power or money.I want to love the person I'm with...no matter who it is"Aida sat up and looked out her window which faced the courtyard that was filled with many flowers"I think I shall go for a walk around the courtyard"she said as she started out the door.

"Yes, Princess." Alex pushed up to stand, resisting the urge to grunt under the weight. To marry for love was such a rare thing in this time. Of course she'd have to be a dreamer to think of such a thing. Princesses were usually bargaining chips in political games.

Aida made her way out and to the courtyard, starting to get used to Alex already which was very usual since it took her a while to warm up to Sir Garret. She walked along the garden, stopping to take a flower and bringing it to her nose, taking in it's scent as she sighed.

Alex followed five steps behind as usual. Each step was taken with care, trying not to rattle the armor too much. The princess wanted peace, so Alex was not going to get in the way of that.
