(Earthdawn: The Veil of Prometheus) Ch. 1: Lessons on the Serpent River

Lotar looked across to Yrineda. "Get ready," he said simply. "Burn anything that escapes the nets."

The troll had considered finding a hiding place, but he didn't have the agility of Harlanarander or Eesheeoka and there weren't many places to easily conceal his bulk, so in the end he hadn't bothered. Instead he'd set himself up across from Yalathael, just in the treeline near an open area along their path where there'd be fewer obstacles to interfere with his throw. He held the net unraveled at his side in both hands, his blood beginning to pound in his veins as he waited for the roar which would signal their target's approach.

Step 6: 1d10 = 2.

The four predator's hissed at the sight of the two tasty maidens. Undeterred by the bear, they broke into a run through the rocks and woods after the bait, leaping and bounding with frightful speeds.

Yala ran hard to keep their lead.

It wasn't long before the waiting ambushes could hear their approach.

Then the hustled past Lotar. The crackbills jerked as the ambush came into sight, animal cunning in cruel brains adjusting to the situation...

And they kept coming.

The Crackbills appear at 15 yards from our front line. There are trees for cover, but we've chosen clear lines of fire to draw them down.

Tag Kara, Meridian, Yrined, and Dagnus in whatever order you can post.

Kara waited until they got past the front line of the group before she slide off the bear as she drew her bow eager to attack the huge beasts. Adrenaline ran through her fingers as she took a breath and then pulled her bow and fired at the birds. She blinked as she watched her arrow fly over the backs of the Birds.

2d8= (3+3= 6)

she missed... quickly started to reach for another arrow as she knew she couldn't pout about missing and get ready to try again as her comrades were already sprining into action as she reached for another arrow.

Kara has dropped from her perch behind her, all Paws and she could do was bait, so she flailed her arms out wide as though she were falling off and gave a distressed shriek of a wounded animal. Bait, bait, just don’t get caught in your own trap!

Trick Riding 2d6 6,6,2,3=17

Dagnus, seeing the flailing woman riding atop a bear, identifies that it is bait, and sees the crackbill. "You're mine you ax-faced, overgrown, chicken-brained toucan!" She shouts before throwing a net at the bird.

Thrown Weapons (+2 step from Kara) 1d6+1d8=6+5+5=16

Yrineda saw the savage birds coming down on Them. She wasnt afraid of anything because in her mind, everything can Burn.

She took her Time and waited ready to cast her spells in case the net failed.

Yalathael was far more skilled in hand to hand than with throwing weapons. She was, however, a practiced fisherwoman. Falling back on those skills, th River's Daughter smoothly cast a net over the second crackbill.

Before everything took place Yrineda took the time to enchant her best friend, Yalathael, weapons with her fire elemental power.

Crackbill are bird with feather and feather can burn.

As the beast approach, she weave her earth dart to strike them next.

Dwayne, seeing the lead crackbill entangled in a net, runs in for a strike. Raising his hand above his head, he rockets his fist down at the trapped bird and slams his fist down on it.

Roll to hit:
2d6 = 3+6 = 9
Exploded dice:
1d6 = 1 = 10
Damage:

You had four rounds to cast the Flame Weapon. Let's say you suceeded.

With the Crackbill hampered by the net, Dwayne didn't just strike it, his magically charged fist found a vulnerable point in it's hide. The crackbill was driven to the ground with a squawk and serveral ugly snaps!

The rearmost crackbill ran at Dwaine—given that the obsidiman had stepped out front a bit. The monster powered up the open path of forest and—a few feet away from the obsidiman—puffed out a cloud of acrid smelling gas. It made Dwaine's skin tingle painfully.

Crackbill rolls 11 vs. your Spell Defense.
If it overcomes your spell defense suffer damage equal to 4-mystic armor.
if it doubles your spell defense mystic armor does not protect.

“Hrrrraggggh!”

Lotar let loose a guttural roar as battle was joined, and stepped forward to hurl his net with a twist of his body. He didn’t want to risk catching Dwaine, so he aimed for the furthest, unnetted crackbill. Once the net was in the air, he reached back and slowly slid his sword forth from its sheath.

The weapon was his pride and joy; forged a mere few weeks ago, the proof of his progress as a weaponsmith. It had yet to taste blood, but there was no truer test than real combat.

Battle Bellow as a simple action against crackbills 1 & 4: 6, vs their highest social defense (+1, because there are two of them).
Throwing the net at crackbill 3: 6.
Drawing my sword.

The bird Dwaine targeted gave a frightened squawk as the heavy bar of razor sharp steel descended towards it, but it managed to leap away, barely! A few feathers were slashed off of its' vestigial wing!

Oliver knew this would be a big test for Billy Bob. He had yet to finish combat training his valiant steed. It would take some coaxing to get him to charge the predator, but if he could manage it, he and Billy Bob could show the girls their worth...

The only partially combat trained stallion gave an angry 'bruoo haha!” and surged into a charge at his guidance, bearing down on the lead crackbil—the one Yalathael had netted.

He lowered his spear perfectly. The murderous bird squawked and tried to stumble out of the way despite the impediments, but he adjusted smoothly and slammed his spear into it center mass, sending the bird to the ground in a limp, bloody mass.

Attack roll: 2d6=9

Damage roll: d12+2d8=24

Strength role not to be unhorsed: d12=12

Still unable to get out from under the net, Dwaine's opponent scratched and struggled back up to it's feet.

Luelalin

Luelalin, telekinetically focuses for a moment, before putting one hand behind her head and whipping it forward as if throwing a dagger from nothing.

Wounds appeared on the fell beast, that had started to approach her.

The third crackbill wove through the heroes 'til he got too a few paces from Yalathael. He puffed that horific gray steam at her!

Goldberry gave a shivver and a cry as it washed over her, then a little shout to gather her will against the energy.

Yalathael "Goldberry" Shan, the River's Daughter

While casting the net, Yalathael's blade had been plunged into the earth beside her. She'd moved immediately to take the blade in both hands and ready it for battle.

Sweet Yirineda's spell had writhed her fine two handed blade in flickering red-orange flames.

A crackbill jobbed up to too far away to strike before releasing it's paralytic mist, which wracked her body with pain. The river's daughter gave a ululating battle cry to shake off the stabbing pains and waves of lethargy as she surged up too the crackbill. Her sword descended in a flaming circle that arched up and across at the avian monster! The River's Daughter's focused determination caused a flair of azure energy as she powered the strike with her own karma.

The perfectly placed blow slashed up the crackbills body, raking a foot long bleeding line of charred flesh into the monstrous bird who crumpled like a rag doll. The flare of the flame was so intense that the elf girl's hands were reddened.

Tag Meridian and Urza.

Meridian laughed in glee as the nets and birds came together behind her. Before she could get Paws turned back to the fray, two were already down. "Yes!" She pointed Paws at the freestanding bird and charged, she rocked in her saddle timing, timing, and launch. This would be stupid if she were like other girls, but she wasn't. Shaping the power within herself she lashed out with her arm, though now it ended in a vicious feral claw. She arced through the air, her target before her.

Barely had that lethal bird managed to get to it's feet when Meridian all but fell out of the sky to slash ti's throat wide with her cracking talons.

The fourth bird—and last on the field—darted past Lotar and puffed a gasp of paralytic steam at the troll as he passed.

The bird's maneuver was clearly taking it off of the defensive—but it also had him past the group in a flash.

Yirineda look at the last crackbill that was still up and frown.

The crackbill was trying to get away but she knew that if she use her earth dart she might at least slow him.

She concentrate on her power and cast her spell. She move one finger up to point at it a start humming a small tune that helped her focus her thought.

She had prepared her spell but better safe then sorry.

Casting + karma = 3D6 = 3+5+6=15

A crystalline dart launched from Yirineda's hand and shot through the air like a crossbow quarrel. It slammed into the last crack bill's head. The bird collapsed in a heap!

"All right!" Yalalthael gave a bounce. "We were awesome!" She spun around, grinning at everyone.

End battle for now

People may post freely for a bit. :)

Anyone with Creature Lore or elemental lore please give me a roll. This includes a perception based half magic roll from Yirineda and Meridian

Kara had hesitated before she could get another shot at the beasts... it was over so quickly. "Wait.. what about the other 9...there were 13 all together right?... we can't relax yet." She said as she gripped her bow tightly. She felt like she was dead weight to the group... she did very little to actually take them down.
