There Once Was a Pirate(butterfly0408/Distain2003)

Years of dreams were coming true for her as well. She always knew, even when she was young, that the only person there ever would be for her, was Stephen. Being here now, in his arms, on his ship, it was like a piece of her that had been missing for 13 years was finally in it's proper place once again. Laine did not mind the kiss at all, nor being tugged into his arms. She only wrapped her arms around him and returned his kiss. It was an amazing kiss. Like no kiss she'd ever had before. And then, a thought came to her. Stephen was the only one that had ever kissed her. EVER. She liked that idea very much as she moaned slightly into his lips.

Stephen broke the kiss and groaned a bit in discomfort. "Your crushing something that is very dear to me can you move your right knee?" He looked up at her she had come into the hammock on an odd angle. "I hope you don't mind using me as a mattress. "He looked up into her eyes his hands running over her back slowly a bit nervous to touch her. He had not laid like this with a woman ever, well one he had not payed for the comfort.

She smiled shyly, but nodded and moved her knee as he asked her too. "Better?" she asked but before he could reply, she was already kissing him once again. But a sudden knock at the door, it's opening, and the doctor's voice, shocked Laine. She immediately tried to make a retreat back to her own hammock.

Missing, she feel the few feet to the ground, landing with a thud and a loud, "OW!!" Thankfully, she landed on her right side. All her latest damage was on her left. "Are you alright!" the Doctor yelled as he ran to her side. "You all are lucky I don't charge per injury. You are going to be one giant black and blue mark!"

"I am fine. I didn't land on anything already in pain," she automatically looked to Stephen and smiled. She wanted him to know she was alright. And her cheeks were still a light red as well. She was also still a little embarrassed, almost getting caught like that.

Stephen moved quickly out to kneel next to her looking into her eyes. "She will be fine doctor once she realizes that it is perfectly fine for 2 adults to lay in the same hammock and kiss. "He looked at the doctor smiling as he took her hand picking her up slipping her into his slightly larger hammock pushing the other away. " She also still needs to get used to the sea. What did you need doctor? Is my room done? " He looked at him smiling shaking the doctors hand in thanks for all the work he had done.

"Aye it is. The workers completed the repairs, were paid, and departed back into port. It's all clear to move back in there now. I'm sure that it will be much more comfortable resting in there rather than this stuffy little cabin." The doctor looked to Laine and laughed a little seeing that she was blushing and pouting a little. Clearly embarrassed by Stephen's comment. "Why don't we help the little lady back to bed and then... I will make myself and her a little something to eat while you go into town for yourself. The men might get a little fishy if you don't at least share a drink at the tavern with them."

Stephen nodded looking at him."I was thinking the same thing Doctor. I will head back to my room and see you there later. "Stephen leaned down kissing her softly before moving from the cabin quickly. He went to his room grabbing some Spanish coin. He moved quickly into the town, he had to drink with the crew as well as get a bath before the morning.

The doctor helped Laine reach the room once again. Leaving her a moment, he retrieved some bread, cheese, and fresh water for them both and returned to the cabin. The two sat at the bed and held a pleasant conversation together. Laine took a liking to the doctor. He was a kind man. And he liked her as well. Yes, she was just what Stephen needed in his life. She could bring joy back into his eyes. She had already begun that. "So tell me doctor, how long have you know Stephen? It amazes me that he is captain of this ship. I knew when we were young he was going to be a leader but... I never thought pirate. I don't even fully understand how he came to be so. He was taken I know, but moving his way up to captain in only 13 years? He's not much older than I. Aren't captains usually... older?"

Stephen did exactly what he said he would he got a bath then went drinking with his men. He spent many hours with them doing his best to enjoy himself. It was hard sense she would not leave the front of his mind.

The doctor nodded as she spoke about him. "I have known him every day since his father took him. He... was a good boy when he joined this crew 13 years ago. His father... broke him. He did every thing he could imagine to change his demeanor make him a pirate. "He took a deep breath remembering the day Stephen took over the ship. "Stephens' father... ordered the crew to open fire on a ship as we sailed away. All that was on board where wounded and women. Stephen demanded he stop his father refused and Stephen killed him. It was a brutal fight, Stephen was in bed for 5 days after that battle. That day was the last time i saw the goodness in his eyes. Until he discovered you. "He spoke quietly.

Laine listened with great interest. She had been missing from her loves life for so long, she would need to know all that had happened to him in the time. She needed that before they could go any further together. She had been munching on the bread at first, but she stopped and only listened, a shocked look on her face. "How long ago was that? I can't believe what poor Stephen has been through. How can I help him?"

"That was nearly 7 months ago. Before that every time he held his mothers necklace he came out of his state. "He shrugged looking at her."You are helping but i don't know how to make it faster. Just be there for him becoming a normal man again will be hard for him. He spent 13 years training to be a monster. It's not going to be easy to reverse. " He sighed looking at her smiling.

Laine sighed as she picked up the cup of water, staring down into it. "I hope I can... I just..." she sighed, "I'm just one girl that has been out of his life for 13 years, how can I have such an influence upon him?"

He did not say a word about that just placing his finger on her heart. He smiled not really knowing how to help her. Stephen and many of the members of the crew began coming back onto the ship. Shouting and singing only about half the crew would come back to the ship tonight the rest would stay in town for some... affection. Stephen had a good deal to drink and was a bit more than tipsy. He walked into the room his face flushed slurring his words. "Hello... how... ish... your... night... going? "Pausing between each word trying to stay on track. His hair was clean his cloths where new he was feeling no pain.

Laine gasped slightly at the sight of him. She thought he'd have a drink or two, yes, but this was more like 10 it seemed. The doctor did not seem to happy as well. He as hesitant to leave them alone, but hopefully he would just pass out. Patting Laine on the shoulder, he stood to leave. As he passed Stephen, he whispered to him, "Don't make a fool of yourself." He then smiled and spoke across the room to Laine, "Good night child. Pleasant dreams."

"You too," she bid him back. In a moment, they were both alone again.

Stephen turned locking the door putting the key into his pocket. He staggered over to the bed setting down looking up at her."What did you to talk about?"He smiled he was very curious what the pair had done together for so long. He reached forward pawing at her hand a few times before he actually grabbed it, lacing his fingers looking at her."You look very nice!*

She smiled a little back at him... despite the fact he smelled horribly of booze. "All kinds of things. Where he came from, where I came from, this ship." She left out that they spoke of him. They mostly spoke of him. Gently, she grasped his hand back.

He pulled her hand lightly urging her to come lay down with him with out words. His eyes closed as he groaned softly. He wanted nothing more then to go to sleep right now he was feeling the booze a bit more than he expected he would be. "Do you mind me holding you while we sleep? "He completely forgot about her fear of the dark the lantern that was lit was flicking against the metal already sputtering nearly ready to go out.

Happy to have him ask her such a sweet thing, for a moment she forgot about it as well, nuzzling against him, "It's alright. I don't mind." Laine nuzzled up close to him, closing her eyes. The light was still on when she closed her eyes...

Stephen held her close his arms wrapped tight around her as he drifted off. He was happy to hold her tight. His lips pressed against her neck as he drifted off. The alcohol coupled with the stress of the last few days had him exhausted. With in an hour after the pair feel into their sleep the light flicked out. The faint lights from the city outside did little to push back the darkness.

At first, the darkness had no effect on Laine, at least on the outside. This time, it was all inside her head. Her breathing was a little faster and she was sweating a little bit more then should be normal... she was not tossing and turning.

"Laine! Get in!"
"Stay with me! Stephen stay with me!"
"Someone has to cover the door Laine! We can't both-"
Pounding on the door! They were coming.
"Laine! IN!"
He pushed her into the hole in the floor. The door closed. A few beams of light between the boards.
"Stay quiet Laine. No matter what you hear!"
The sound of the carpet moving. Darkness.
...
The door above her burst open and the sounds of the pirates footsteps pouring in rang out across the wood above her. Everyone was yelling but it was impossible for her to make out any words. One thing she could tell, Stephen was talking with them. It was calm at first and then it all was so loud! They were fighting! Stephen was fighting the pirates! Right above her head! It went on and on what felt like forever though in reality it was only a few moments. And then... a loud thud RIGHT over her head. A body. A dead body falling down upon the carpet over her. She wanted to scream out, but quickly clasped her hands over her mouth. The rest was a blur. All that was running through her head was the wondering if it was Stephen that lay above her, dead. Bleeding. She knew they were bleeding, for the blood was starting to soak through the carpet and drip onto her in the darkness. A few moments later, the sounds of footsteps leaving. A bit of distant screams and blasts filled the darkness, but even those soon ended. And all that was left was the silence, the darkness, and the dripping of blood above her.

Laine was still in bed, but her breathing was growing so heavy now as she was gasping for air. She couldn't breath! It was happening once again! She could not breath! Air! She needed air but no matter how she struggled, the darkness seemed to be wrapping around her neck, choking her in the stillness.

Stephen was starting to wake up he never was able to sleep well after drinking. Slowly he woke up he was sobering up quickly. He sat on the edge of the bed not realizing that the lights where out or she was having an episode. He jogged from the cabin to releave himself before coming back finally seeing her panting. "Laine? Are you okay?"He was standing next to her before he realized it was black in the room. He quickly moved to light a lantern setting it next to her on the bed. He slowly moved next to her laying down holding her close. "Its okay Laine I'm okay you need to be strong and come out of that hiding spot. Your going to have to come with me now don't worry I'm going to get you out of here. "

Laine was panting a few moments more, but the light definitely did begin to calm her. After he was snuggled close to her, whispering sweet little reassurances to her, then she really relaxed. The nightmarish memories were gone once again and she was sleeping soundly. At one point, her eyes drifted opening and she spotted the light flickering. It made her smile and she let herself slip back to sleep, snuggling closer to him.

Stephen sighed happily once she calmed down. He drifted off to a deep sleep his night mares had been driven away the moment he knew he had found her. He pressed his cheek into her shoulder holding her close sighing happily. It was early the next morning when Stephen woke his head throbbing slightly as he slipped from the bed to go get breakfast for the pair. The chief had been one of the ones that came home last night so he knew he would be cooking.

By the time he got back to the room, she too was awake. Smiling and sitting up in the bed as he came in, "Good morning. This is something I can get use to. Waking up like this."

Stephen turned his head to the side in pain. He walked forward putting the tray down on the bed before going back to lock the door and close the blinds. Once he came back he kissed her softly."I have a hang over please speak softly."He whispered setting on the bed next to her offering her a plate.

She smiled at him as she took the plate, giving him a little kiss on the nose, "And whose fault is that?" She said softly and quietly. She started to pick at the food on her plate. "You still sure you need to keep the door lock?"
