There Once Was a Pirate(butterfly0408/Distain2003)

He was frozen he could not move no matter how hard he tried. His eyes where locked on her scar. "Whats your name."He said it so softly the he could not even hear it. He waited a moment looking at her she didn't answer. He got a bit louder and more aggressive in his questioning grabbing her leg turning it so the scar was visible."Whats your name! How did you get that scar!" His grip was hard as he looked at it. This could not be her. She would have recognized him by now. He was certain he would recognize her.

He could feel his heart crumbling in his chest. If this was her... she hated him. The women he loved hated him and wanted him dead... How could this happen? It was not fair! He had spent his whole adult life working for this moment... and he had ruined it. He wanted to leap out the window right now and just let the ocean take him.

"AHH!" Now his treatment was irritating her wound even more! Tears rolling down her face. She didn't know why he wanted to know her name or her scar, but she was willing at this point to do and tell him anything to get him off her and stop the pain. "AHH Laine! My name is Laine! I got the scar from OW a rock in the ocean! When I was five! OW!" He was really starting to hurt her now.

When she said her name and how she got the scar he nearly fainted. his hands released her he walking over to the desk and fell into the chair. He was crying soundlessly the tears masked by the sweat dripping down his brow. What had he done?! He shot her father, threatened her life, her innocence. He had even threatened to kill her. His mind walked back over all the terrible things he had done to her. If he had a pistol in his hands he probably would have used it on himself. He could not believe what he had done. Miller was the governor he had lied to her. He had sent his own daughter off to die to save his own hide.

Stephen knew he could never tell her who he was. At least not now if he told her now her memory of the boy that she called her hero twice would be ruined. He could not drop her off at port now. His entire plan had been ruined. He had to protect her even if she hated him for it. He only had one thing he thought he could do. He had to confront the men who wanted to harm them. If he didn't end this quickly something terrible may happen to her.

Laine quickly sat up in the bed, flinching in pain once more, but he had backed down. Perhaps he was not such a bad fellow after all. And yet he still had raided her home and kidnapped her. Nothing changed that. Nothing. Except maybe... crying? Glancing his way, he could have swore a moment that he was crying as he said there. Her clothing was still disheveled, she made a move to get a closer look. Before she could even get out of the bed, the knock came at the door and shocked her. Nathan could not come in with her only half dressed like this! And knowing this pirate scum, he would not wait for her to make herself look decent once more. Rushing to put her clothing back in order, flinching at the speed caused her ribs discomfort. "Captain, I have your dinner..." Nathan called through the door.

Stephen sat up whipping his face off. He stood turning around he got up opening the bin where his cloths where. He looked at her tossing her a new shirt. "Put some cloths on."He moved slowly to the door opening it just a enough for the tray."Nathan... Tomorrow I am going to need yours and Adam's aid... I am putting and end to this disrespect. "He did not give him time to answer before he moved setting the tray down on the bed for her. He could not look at her if he wanted to. He took his plate and cup back to the desk setting down eating slowly.

Something wasn't right suddenly. As she sat there, swimming in the shirt he had just thrown her, looking at the food he placed before her... something was changed. Something in the air? Something in her? Or him? Or both? Tentatively, she reached out and took up the plate in her hand. Picking at it with a fork a few moments, not actually eating any of the food on her plate. The tension was as thick as ever. "You forgot to lock the door..." she said suddenly, in a gentle whisper...

Stephen got up moving to the chest he opened it slowly he pulled out his sword and his 4 pistols. He put them where they belonged in his cloths. Once he was fully armed he closed the chest. He did not really care at this point if she could get in. They where both wounded and he could tell her injuries where affecting her more. He stared at the door as he ate with his right hand only. His left remained on the handle of the pistol on his right hip. He was so shocked right now he was not even sure what he would do if someone came threw that door.

While watching him arm himself, she finally started to pick at her own plate. She hardly ate anything by the time she put the plate back down. She felt sick to her stomach, not wanting to eat to much. Afraid it was only going to come back up again. There was still such and overwhelming silence in the room, even long after her plate was down. She just sat, glancing his way, watching him as he would watch the door. She wanted to ask him if he planned to stay there all night, but she was to afraid to anger him any more. She could stay in this bed with him. It was bad enough being in the same room. She'd sit there and wait until he went to sleep, then she'd... sleep in the chair. Something. She didn't know. Anything.

Stephen remembered when she said she had been locked in a dark whole for 4 days. He got up slowly with several matches he lit a lantern in every corner of the room. He moved slowly back to the desk lighting the one on his desk setting down he glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. 'The least i can do for you is make sure you don't have to be in a dark room again.' He spoke only to himself he knew if he said a word to her right now it would be telling her who he was. That was something he could not do. He pushed the chair back against the wall and put his feet up on the desk. The room was chilly because of the open window and the fact they ship had a tail wind. Stephen pulled the his ax pistol from his shirt holding it in his hand as he closed his eyes. He kept his finger off the out of the trigger guard just in case he was jolted awake again. His hand in in his lap he watched the door until sleep over took him.

She wanted to say thank you as she watching him light all the lanterns in the room, but words escaped her tonight. She only sat there, waiting for him to lay in bed. It never happened before sleep overtook her. She passed out in the bed, laying on her back for it was too painful to lay on her side. That was where she remained till morning. No attack came that night, only the cool breeze and a tense slumber for them both.

Nathan knocked on the door and Stephen spoke clearly. "Come in!"It was almost an immediate reaction. He moved to a more stable seated position putting his pistol away. Nathan came in and froze when he say Stephen fully armed. "Stephen... Your no..."Stephen looked at him and interrupted him in mid sentence. "Put the food down at the foot of the bed. Then get Adam to gather all the men on the deck in 20 minuets. Do not question me just get ready. I need you both to be armed in case the balance of the fight shifts to badly. "Stephen knew that in order to protect Laine he would have to let the monster that his father had created go one more time. With any luck it would be the last. Hopefully today he would gain control of his ship. Something he had been fighting for every day since his father took his last breath. Nathan set the tray down on the chest at the foot of the bed. Nodding he moved back out into the ship. Stephen moved quickly to the bed taking his plate and setting at the foot of the bed eating what he thought would be his last meal in silence.

It was silent, until Laine started to stir. Starting to wake, she stretched without thinking, and ended up flinching as her ribs throbbed. "Mmm!!" she curled a little to the side not damaged and curled up a little bit. A moment later, she opened her eyes and moved to sit up... shocked to see he was still there, calmly eating his meal. She couldn't help but gasp slightly and flinch away from him. A reaction she could not help. It was her instinct at this point.

Stephen turned to her looking at her."Take your plate and get on the floor lay down next to the bed. Do not get up unless you are going to run. If i am not the first person to come threw that door. Jump out the window and swim straight off the back of the boat. You are better off taking your chances with the see than if i don't come back into this room. "He put the tray on the bed close to her and stared at her. He wanted to remember how she looked because if he did not win this fight he would never see her again. Stephen reached inside the chest pulling out a large ornate cutlass. He stood holding it in his right hand walking from the room closing his eyes. Every fight he had ever been in this was why. To prepare him to take this ship. To prepare him to fight for her the last good thing that remained in his life. He walked out of the door closing it and locking it behind him. The lock would not stop them but it would give her time to flee.

"What are you-" she stopped as she watched him getting himself prepared. For what, she did not know, but it was not going to be good. THAT she knew. She stayed watching him all the way up until he looked her right in the eyes. The eyes were the window to the soul, and in that moment, she could see right into him. She saw past all the things he had done, all the things he had said, and for some reason she saw a man wanting to hold onto her for just one moment longer. Why? Why did he look at her like she was some kind of precious gem to him. She never got to ask him, for a moment later, he was up and out the door. The moment after that, she was on her feet going after him, "Wait!" She reached the knob the moment after he locked it. She tired it for a few moments before backing away. She didn't know what was going to happen, but it was not going to be good. Forgetting the plate, she quickly went to the spot on the floor where he told her to lay. She lay with her head at the foot of it so she could watch the door. And then, she just waited to see just what fate held in store for them and this ship.

Stephen walked out and his fathers cutlass in his hand. "It has come to my attention that some of you want to be the captain of this ship. Some of you don't feel I deserve this ship! "He swung the cutlass hard and buried the blade a full 2 inches into the main mast of his ship. "When i took this ship my father gave me that sword. If you want my command Come take it. "He drew a pistol in one hand and a his sword in the other. He was ready for anything his back to the only place where there where no pirates. His eyes scanned the crowed he was not sure what exactly to expect every single man had at least his sword on some had their pistols. He also knew Nathan would have hidden his blunderbuss near the the door to his cabin. That was were he always put it when he was preparing for a fight. Above him where the wheel was Nathan and Adam stood both armed to the teeth in case more than 2 or 3 came in at the same time.

For a good half a minute, no movement. Not a single inch on the entire deck. It seemed on man was going to make a move for it. That was only at first though. And then, the move was made. Thomas Duggins, a man that had been on this ship since before even Stephen stepped forward, sword drawn in one hand, pistol in the other. He was one of the ones Stephen had on his list of men that would likely rebel, and as for the last two names on his list, they came forward to stand beside him. It was Thomas that did the talking though, "I stand before ye boy with my fellow pirates Smith and Lewis. We been thinking for some time that ye be to soft to run this ship. To soft for the ship, and now it seems soft for the little skirt that makes ye hard. That ain't the kind of man your father wanted running this ship. If he saw ye today, he'd never give ye that sword. So I challenge ye boy. Three of us..." he pointed to Nathan and Adam, "And three of you. A fair fight. To the death. He who wins has no doubt earned the right to this ship. What say ye boy?"

Stephen smirked dropping his sword lowering his pistol hand. Standing up straight."I am surprised I never took you for a man. I assumed the day you would come to take my ship would be just like the day your father conceived you. Like a thief in the night coming while i slept to take what you wanted. " He grinned. "It would appear though that you have forgotten what my father thought me. There the only fair fight..."He drew his ax with is right hand raising his left at the same time. "Is the the one you win!" As he finished his word both pistols burst to life the round from his left hand entered Smiths throat area shattering his collar bone and ripping threw his throat lodging in his spine crippling for the few moments he had before all his life's blood took to spill onto the deck. As the shot rang out Stephen released the pistol the recoil sending it from his hand. A trick he learned from his father.

The shot from his ax hand buried could not have been any better aimed. It struck Thomas in the ball joint of his pistol shoulder, ruining his arm for life. "Nathan, Adam, DO NOT move!" Stephen moved quickly gripping his fathers sword ripping it from the mast as he rolled behind it to avoid pistol fire. He switched the hands and of his ax and his sword so that he could fight effectively. "How is your shoulder Thomas? A boy just ruined you!"

"LEWIS!" Thomas yelled at the only one of the first three still standing, but Lewis was no fool. He dropped his weapons and raised his hands up into the air in defeat. The old pirate looked up at Stephen, a glare in his eye. He knew he was looking up at his death and he could spit! A mere wisp of a man was his downfall. Perhaps he misjudged the boy. But then again... the boy misjudged him as well.

"Surprised me boy. That ye did. But... I've a surprise for you as well. I didn't have two men on my side. I have a third as well. You forget boy... it was I that took ye from the island all those years ago. I know it was that same island. I know you been pining over something you lost for all these years. I know more than you think..."

Laine lay on the floor of the cabin, hands over her ears as the shots fired. She didn't know what was going on, or who was winning, but she hoped it was the good guys. If any of the pirates could be counted as good. She was so fixated on what was happening out the doors in front of her she did not notice the pirate climbing into the broken windows behind her, knife in his teeth, silently creeping up on her, ready to kill.

((CLIFFHANGER! I have to go to sleep. I am LOVING this so far! I just don't know when to let her find out it's him. Hmm))

Stephen dropped his fathers sword turning he drew another pistol firing striking Thomas in the chin ending his speech."Throw all 3 over board let the ocean decide what happens to them. " Stephen dropped his pistol and bent down picking up his sword. "Who is this man he speaks of! Who else means to challenge me! "He roared turning looking at the crew he had a bit his face looked as though he had gone mad. If proving the point that he was not to messed with he was proving it well. "In that room resides a woman any man who touches her will be drug behind this ship by his manhood! Anyone else who seeks to threaten me will hang from the masts until body and head part around the rope!" He turned facing Nathan and Adam he finally felt like the the captain of this ship. He was not aware he would be tested again so soon.

Laine heard yelling from the deck through the doors in front of her. The door was too thick to make out words. But then another noise caught her attention. A noise from behind. The glass from the windows was still on the floor, and her would be assassin took a misstep, alerting her to his presence. Laine turned quickly, moving just in time to miss the attack by the slightest of margins! Stumbling to her feet, her attacker was not ready to give up yet. Running for the door, she reached for the knob, but the attacker grabbed her from behind, knocking her to the ground with a thud. That was the first time she screamed. No words, just a blood curdling scream. A cry for help. "Shut up ya damn whore! This don't have to be so hard!" Knife in hand, he raised it up to strike again, but she was squirming so much he missed the main target again, instead of hitting her in the gut or the heart, he got the fleshy part of her leg. Still, it hurt like HELL! Her screams turned to ones no longer of just distress, but she was screaming in pain as well. Words finally formed. "HELP ME! SOMEBODY PLEASE! AHH!" He raise the knife once again to strike. This time, she didn't think she would be so lucky as the first two times.

Stephen heard the first of her screams but he didn't know what they where for. He put his ax away quickly as he walked to the door taking out the key."Nathan get the crew back to work." He unlocked the door quickly as the second and third scream came. He pushed on it but she had fallen against the door and was holding it shut. Quickly he jammed his drew his last pistol punching it threw the glass. Looking in he saw the man over her. "Your such a coward you cant even face me you have to attack a woman!" He put his pistol in the door as he drew back again. And shot him in the same location as he had Thomas Right in the ball joint of his shoulder. Blood splattered over her face upper body as he fell next to her the knife falling into her lap. "Get away from the door so i can get in and get him."

Laine didn't know what happened. One second she was looking at her death, the next he was lying on the floor next to her, the knife in her lap. Someone was yelling, the door was pushing against her ribs. What all was going on? It took a moment for it all to register. Nodding, even though he was not in the room to see, she started to crawl away from the door. It was all she could do, for her leg hurt to much to stand on her own and walk away from it. She was far enough from the door that it could be opened, when the man reached out for the knife in her lap, desperate to defend herself. But Laine had her own hand wrapped around it. Pulling it back, she stabbed it into his hand, pinning his hand to the ground, he screamed in his own pain while she struggled to crawl even further away.

Stephen came into the room the moment she was clear of the door yelling for the doc. He did not see the knife in the man's hand. He stepped in seeing him still moving he kicked him in the ribs. The force from the blow ripped the knife from his hand causing it to cut its way out. Stephen grabbed him by the hair and pulled him from the cabin. "Doc go check on her! This man dies my way!" He snarled he had warned the crew now he would prove his point. He went to the rail grabbing the end of a hundred foot long rope. He came over pouring gun powder into the mans wound. He sparked it the flame cauterized it in the most painful of way's. He looked at him doing exactly what he said he would. He tugged the mans pants down and tied his groin to the ship before throwing his screaming body over board. He did not care what killed him first the pain he would go threw when the ship had gone the to the end of that rope would be excruciating. He turned to look at the crew as they pushed the last of the men over board.

"Men I don't wish to kill another of you again! You are my brothers my friends! But i will kill anyone who disobeys me! "With that he turned going gathering his weapons coming back into his room brushing the broken glass from the door onto the deck before closing it. Once inside the room he tossed all his weapons in a pile on the bed before running over to check on her.

When Stephen came running back into the room, the doctor had Laine on the bed, blood everywhere. He was hard at work to tend the wound, which had Laine screaming in pain as he picked and tended at it. Seeing that Stephen had re-entered, the Doctor looked to him. He as now a part of the action. "Stephen! Get something to knock her out! Ale! Wiskey! Something! Anything to get her calmed! I have to close this wound before she loses any more blood or an infection gets into it!"

"Stephen!" she called out suddenly. Hearing the doctor call him by his name triggered something in Laine. She still did not know that HE was Stephen. HER Stephen. But hearing the name... she wanted him again. She wanted her hero. She needed her hero back to hold her hand through this. "STEPHEN! Don't leave me! Come back please! Don't leave me in this hole!" She was lost somewhere in the past in her own mind. "It's so dark!"

Hearing the commotion, Nathan and Adam had come running as well, now standing in the doorway, watching.

Stephen grabbed the flask from his desk looking up at them in the door way. "If there is anyone left on this ship that was involved in their plot... FIND THEM!"He took her hand pouring what was essentially poison down her throat. It was pure moonshine 180 proof. He used it to stay his nerves when he remembered her. He took a sip himself hearing her talking about being in that whole. He leaned in knowing the alcohol would make her forget anything he said. He leaned in taking her hand tightly."Its okay Laine I'm here, I'm not going anywhere! Your going to be okay. Just be still and relax so the doctor can fix you up. "His lips were touching her ear and he was still quiet to her. Almost like a voice speaking from the past to her not the man with his hand in hers. His other hand pressed her hips hip firmly holding it in place so she could not move it. His shoulder pressed lightly against hers holding her still.
