There Once Was a Pirate(butterfly0408/Distain2003)

Eventually, Laine had looked over each and every map on his desk. So now she found herself sitting at the window seat, staring out over the water just, watching the waves. They were out to see now. No land in any direction. This was horrible! She was in deeper trouble then she thought. And what would happen when he decided not to treat her so well anymore? She had no clothing, no money. He could leave her just high and dry somewhere with nothing but the clothes on her back... or less. What was to become of her?

Stephen handed the wheel back over to Nathan just before lunch. There where only 3 people on this boat he trusted himself Nathan and Adam. He would have to rely on them while he made his way to France. He went below decks and got another 2 plates of food. Again nothing special Ale, bread, and a sauce less pasta. He came into the room a not long after noon locking the door behind him. He looked at her nodding she had changed like he figured she would. He walked over silently setting the plate and cup on the desk before taking the remainder of the tray to bed. He say down eating slowly with out a word.

Laine watched him as he entered, keeping alert. But seeing that he brought food with him, she figured he did not have any foul intentions. At least for the moment. After a few moments of him sitting and eating his own lunch, she finally got up and walked to the desk, picking up the plate and starting to pick at it herself. "Thank you..." she said softly. He might be her capture, but that didn't mean she was going to give up on her manners. There were a few more moments of silence before she spoke again, "What do you plan to do with me? Am I to stay locked in this room for the rest of my days?"

He looked up at her he really had no idea what to do with her." Your not locked in here. "He said quietly looking at her speaking softly. He continued to eat nodding softly looking around. "Your welcome to go out onto the ship when ever you want. But be warned I wont fight threw my crew to save you."He spoke calmly making it clear she was not being locked in they where being locked out. "Haven't you noticed i lock the door when I am in the room with you?"He stared at her locking his eyes on hers again. "If i wanted to keep you here i would just force you to do so. I have over powered you before i can do it again. " He did not trust the crew he knew at least 5 of them had designs on his position as captain before yesterday he hoped his excessive force scared a couple of them into submission.

She had not even realized it, but sure enough it made sense then. He wasn't protecting her. He was protecting himself. That made him even worse in her eyes. So he took her and could care less what happened to her here. He'd not even feel bad, she was certain, if one of his men welcomed himself into the room to have a taste of her while he was not around. "You still did not answer my real question. WHAT are you going to do with me? You took me for some reason or another. What is that reason? Am I to be.... entertainment?"

"You have me mistaken for my crew." He looked at her snarling. He hated being lowered to that level. He understood why she would make that mistake. It did not change the fact that he hated her for saying it. "I am searching for someone. Your father knows where he is. I figured you might know where he is." He spoke calmly looking at her finishing his meal and ale." If your father was not telling the truth when he told me to look in France. When i threatened your life, if he cared about you at all then he would have told me he was lieing. " He stood up putting her breakfast plate on the tray and walking over to the desk setting the tray next to her. " So tell me does your father value your life? Over that of the man i seek?"He was still staring deep into her eyes something about them bothered him but he could not place it.

"Depends on the man you seek. If you asked me this question 10 years ago, I could have told you yes without a second thought. But..." she was lost looking in his eyes as well. She had the same feeling as last night and had to look away as she continued one, "but after the attack 13 years ago, he changed. We lost so much, but says we only gained. Money, power, influence. He's a changed man. I hate to tell you, but my father very well could have lied to you and sacrificed me to save his own hide. I would not put it past the man my father has become, since I wouldn't change myself into the child of convenience he so wanted to have as of late."

Stephen was fuming again he looked at her. If he had lied, what was he going to do. "Well then i suppose your going to be happy in France. " He spoke spoke sternly glaring at her. Only 3 people heard his threat he could let her live if he wanted to. He sighed wondering just what he was going to do shaking his head. "There are books under the bed. It can get boring at sea." He wanted to yell at her so badly but he couldn't do it for some reason. Her eyes... they wouldn't let him. He turned and stormed to the door.

She could see the anger in his face, and it only made her angry as well. "You have no right to be so mad at ME. I have done nothing wrong. I am not the one that has wronged you and yet you punish me for it. I know no one in France. You plan to abandon a defenseless young woman in a land were she struggles with the language and has nothing to her name? It's a slow death sentence for the girl that did nothing to you."

His mind flashed back to the day he put her in the pit. They had threatened to burn down that building if he had did not come with them peacefully. "It would not be the first time." As far as he knew she died in the whole. That would be the only reason he could think her father would have fled to France. If she did die there it was his fault every moment of discomfort she felt hung on his head. "Fix the bed if you take a book. "He spoke softly before stepping outside of the room locking the door putting the key on his neck again. He went down below decks to make sure the wounded were healing well and to have the doctor take a look at his wound to make sure it was healing well. He had forgotten the dirk that was hidden under the mattress. He was not thinking clearly something about her was causing him to lose his edge.

Watching him go... she couldn't help but smile a little. He DID lock the door. She could hear it and upon going to it, testing the knob she found it indeed locked. He was more talk then he was action it seemed. Wondering what kind of books he had, she went to the bed, reaching under to find these books, but it was no book that she found. Her eyes grew with hope! Pulling the object she found out... she held the dirk in her hand. It was perfect. Something like this though she could not pass up. It might not be there tomorrow. She'd have to use it tonight. As soon as possible.

Forming a NEW plan, she got herself a belt as well, just in case. Getting herself all set up, she waited by the door, ready to jump him when he got into the room. She would strike swiftly, and hopefully true. But what she would do once he was dead... she'd cross that path if it came to it.

Stephen got his bandage changed then moved slowly to the ships holds. He inspected the food stores and weapons stores. After nearly an hour he had cleared his head. He was back to his 'normal' self he moved slowly threw the ship he was heading back to his quarters.

A key slipped into the lock and the door opened slowly. Above on the wheel Nathan had thought he saw a ship and was looking for it on the horizon. One of the mans with plans on Stephens ship was going to make his move today. He planed to take the woman for himself and rick the room to blow. He had made a copy of his key long ago and decided to use it now. He pushed upon the door and and walked in looking around the room for the woman his eyes scanning the back of the room.

Stephen saw the man enter and moved quickly to the room but he was unarmed.

((OOHH! Tricky! You are tricky and sly!))

Without a second thought, Laine lept at the man that entered. Digging the dirk into him, he first place she could get at while trying to jump on him as well. The man roared in pain, Laine got him in the gut, but he was strong. His hand grabbed her wrist and pulled the dirk out of himself, using her own hand. "Little BITCH!" he yelled at her, twisting her wrist and literally yanking her off his back, tossing her across the room. Laine went SMACK into the desk, and crumbling into a little pile on the floor. Took her a few moments to regain some of her wits, but she looked to her hand and found the dirk gone. Looking up... it was in HIS hand as she stood over her. It wasn't the captain. This was bad... this was VERY bad.

Stephen grabbed the rod used to push powder into the cannon it sat by. As he came charging in he swung the metal rod as hard as he could. He hit as hard as he could bending the rod over his back causing him to stumble. Stephen jabbed the end into his ribs pushing him over the desk. "You broke into my room! You where going to kill me! Well i guess that's one less traitor. " He moved around the desk as the man stood up. They both lunged at the same time Stephen was cut lightly on the side as he pressed the metal rod against the man and pushed driving him threw the window at the back of the boat. Stephen fell into the seat relaxing leaning against the window that was not broken out. He had taken out 2 of the four panes of glass. He was breathing heavily his eyes closed. The dirk was laying at his feet.

Laine was clinging to the desk as it all happened around her. Watching the pirate captain fight and take down such a large, strong man... she knew she could never fight him herself. Hell, that could have been her flying through the back of the ship if she had been successful in attacking him and not his flunky. Laine didn't know what to say now. She didn't even move, just stayed in the same, frightened spot on the floor. She was still there when Stephen's men came running to see what had happened. Some to see if he was alright. Others to see if they had a new captain or not. The doctor pushed his way through them and went to Stephen, "Get back you dogs. Give him some air." No one seemed to notice of care about Laine and in truth, with so many pirates suddenly all around her, she liked it that way.

Stephen winced as the doctor started to fix the cut on his stomach. "GET BACK TO WORK!" He yelled jerking firmly, he groaned as he tugged on the stitching. Nathan and Adam began pushing people from the room yelling at them to get out. Once the room was clear Nathan stood guard at the door while Adam took over at the wheel. "Doc that's 4 times now. I am gonna owe you for ever now aren't i?"He chuckled and the doc shook his head."I'm going to look at the girl now you rest. "He moved down kneeling next to her his hands carefully running over her as he tried to inspect her.

Laine was clearly nervous as the doctor came to her, kneeling down next to her. She tried to flinch away, only making her realize she was hurt, for pain shoot through her side where she had hit the desk. "Where does it hurt?" he asked, noticing her pain right away. Laine was not sure to trust him, but it was better that trusting one of the other pirates on this ship. He at least seemed normal. "My ribs... I think..."

The doctor took her hand and helped her to her feet, the sharp pain in her side making her flinch once again. Upon inspection... "You've bruised a rib or two. Nothing rest and a bandage won't help." He got out even more bandages to wrap Laine's mid section, but smiled over at Stephen, "We are going to need more bandages at this rate." Turning back to Laine, "Lift up your shirt a bit my dear, don't worry he won't look... will you?" He was smiling at Stephen again.

Stephen turned in pain laying down on the ledge. He was in pain and he had just had a near assassination attempt. He had to get control of his crew today. He could only hope that he would not have to kill them all and start over to do that. He held his hands over his head it was throbbing he just wanted to go to sleep. Could he really afford to?

"Don't mind him," the doctor whispered to her. "He has a tough exterior, but he is good deep down inside.... somewhere." Once she was finished getting bandaged up, the doctor helped her to sit in the bed. "I'll have Nathan bring you both dinner. You both rest tonight. Don't worry though Stephen... your starting to weed out the men. At this rate, you'll get rid of all the bad eggs by France." With that the Doctor left them and the tension was in the air.

He was right he but at this rate they would weed him out as well. He looked over at her setting up he had just realized what had happened when she been attacked. He walked over to her looking at her. "You didn't know that wasn't me! " He got into her face staring pushing her down lightly looking into her eyes." You tried to kill me! I protect you from them! I relight the lanterns because your being irrational and you tried to kill me!" He roared he was livid he wanted nothing more than to destroy her right now he had never been so hurt by someones betrayal.

"OW!" she had to move swiftly to try and escape some of his wrath, irritating her bruised ribs in the process. It was about time he realized just what was going on. And he made many a good argument in his favor, but she had many in her defense as well, "You kidnap me... keep me prisoner... put in in danger... I was acting in instinct! And my instinct is to get as far away from YOU as I can. Sending you to hell where you belong sounds about as far as you can get from me!"

He moved with her pinning her down with his hand on her neck. "What do you think i am! I have not attempted anything with you! I keep you in her to keep men like the one i just killed from taking you in many horrible ways. " He snarled looking at her she seemed to be failing to realize just what they where going to do." Do you know what would happen to you if you had killed me " He griped the shirt ripping his shirt from sending buttons flying in all directions as he ripped the shirt open revealing her chest. His eyes where furious he had no intention of raping her but was going to scare the hell out of her in the process.

Laine's eyes went wide in fear! He was getting what he wanted. He was scaring the hell out of her alright. "AH! You bastard! You should never have taken me! If you just would have LEFT me in my home, none of this would have happened!" She started to struggle against him, her ribs screaming in pain at her for so much movement. "AH, OW! Let me go! BASTARD! Let me GO!"

He growled loudly looking into her eyes holding his hand on her neck he moved off her. His free hand undid the belt looking into her eyes."This must be what you wanted. You where going to kill me leaving you at sea on a ship with a bunch of sex starved men. Killing me would have been begging them to do this." He began tugging down her pants wanting to scare her more prove what would happen if she did that again. HE got her pants down to her knee before he saw a scar on her inner thigh. He froze his grip on her neck loosening. He recognized that scar... It couldn't be!

"OW! STEPHEN! OW! My leg!" Little Laine was a dozen or so feet out into the water, blood in the water around her. Young Stephen ran out and scooped her up, quickly bringing her to shore and laying her down. Her pants were all ripped up, showing her bleeding wounds.
"Laine! What happened?! Oh I gotta get you to the town doctor!" He was not much bigger than her, but he quickly picked his little friend up and started to run with her towards town.
The little girl was crying wildly, "A rock! A rock in the water! Stephen it hurts! It hurts a lot!"
"It's okay Laine! I'm gonna take care of you! I'll always take care of you!"
Getting little Laine to the doctor, he started working on her leg while Stephen sat with the doctor's wife. Soon, both their mothers were there as well. He sat next to him mom, who held her the hand of Laine's mother on the other side. Some time later, the doctor came out, a smile on his face. "She'll have a scar, but she'll be find. No rough housing for a month, she will need to take it easy." He came to Stephen and roughed up his hair a bit, "You helped your little friend out today son. You're her little hero."
As they were walking home, Laine in her mothers arms, Laine reached her little hand out and took Stephen's hand. "Thank you Stephen... thank you so much for taking care of me..."

That scar was in the exact same place as the scar on the woman before him.
"You're no better then them!" she screamed at him. "You try to pretend like you are, but no. You're the same SCUM of the earth that the rest of them are! Don't try to deny it you bastard! I dare you to do it! I DARE you to! Go on! Be more like them while you lie to me and to yourself! AHOOWW!" The more she struggled, the more her ribs hurt until she had tears in her eyes from the pain. "AAHH PIRATE BASTARD!"
