Big Bad, Little Red, and the Hunters. (Fates.Gamble and Gunner)

Carl’s expression of dislike could not have been more mutual. Based on the few things he’d eavesdropped from Catty, Aeric kept a low opinion of the guy even before this chance encounter. Now that he’d seen him grab her arm like that however, he was downright disgusted with this guy. Yet despise turned to a smug look of satisfaction when Aeric witnessed Carl’s expression betray his nervousness. Though, Aeric was far less concerned with the little man before him once Catty broke free of her ex’s clutches and wrapped her arm around his fast-becoming replacement. His disregard of their third wheel was completely clear as he ended the stare-off with Carl and smiled back down at the woman he was taking from him.

“Well it is a nice painting,” he commented after a quick glance to the artwork she gestured to. The ironic depiction of the wolves might have made more of an impression on him had the moment not been so awkward. He scarcely had time to consider it with the pizza boy still in their presence. But that came to a quick closure as the sadness washed his face. While Catty had pangs of empathy, Aeric felt more amused than anything else. It was the least he deserved if he was going to fuck other girls behind her back; something that Aeric for one, couldn’t even understand the compulsion of. Catty seemed every bit as wild and fun as one could hope for so far; and drop dead gorgeous to boot. As far as he was concerned, she was way out of this guy’s league anyway.

Maybe Catty had come to that conclusion herself, given how she ushered them away without so much as a farewell to the poor fool. Aeric couldn’t help but feel a little victorious as they left him alone with his bag and trash poker to be lost in the crowds. He didn’t give the man so much as a second thought as he accepted her hand and followed her lead. He was just as relieved to have her alone once they were safely away; glad things had gone more or less well so far. He was still playing a dangerous game here; and he had to keep his wits about him if he was going to make this work. Primarily, he still had to come up with a way to make it back to the apartment before her. But it was hard to think about leaving when they’d only just finally gotten together.

He grinned a little at the sudden way she’d dropped his hand. Her awkwardness was particularly endearing, given he’d literally been living with her. For him, it was amusing seeing both sides of her. At home she was completely relaxed in her own skin; yet with Aeric she became a bundle of nerves. “No problem,” he quickly brushed things off after her word of thanks. “You looked petty uncomfortable with that guy, so I figured I’d better step in.” He didn’t ask further about Carl; appearing satisfied with the explanation. He had no interest in the discussing the men of her past right now, and he would likely already know anything she told him besides.

“Anyway, yep I made it! I was a little worried I wouldn’t be able to find you since we couldn’t plan ahead. Sorry about that by the way… I’ve had a busy couple days so I haven’t been able to replace my phone yet. I plan to get that taken care of tomorrow.” Hopefully, anyway. Should be able to sneak out long enough while you’re at work… “You too!” he announced, more than happy to have a shot at a real first date with her. “No actually,” he admitted, “I only just got here a bit ago. Seems I came at just the right time though, I’m really glad I ran into you.” Though, he frowned some when she disappointingly told him about Anubis. “Aw, that’s too bad,” he lamented, unable but to feel a little guilty over it. “Well you said he was recently abused right? Poor guy… maybe he’s just not ready to be out around people again just yet. He probably just has to get comfortable again.”

But Aeric much preferred to be here in human form, where the two could actually enjoy one another. Carl aside, everything had worked out just perfectly for him so far. Like Catty, he could scarcely even think clear after their last interactions together. Clearly she was still under the illusion it was nothing but a dream. But for Aeric, it was all too real and that made things even more complicated. The dynamic between them was definitely one of the strangest things he’d encountered, but he pushed all that away as he committed himself to just showing her a good time and seeing where things would go for now. “Anyway, I’m here and I’m all yours.” he told her, hoping his arrival would help her forget all about the reluctance of her canine companion. “So, what do you say we go enjoy this fair now that we’ve escaped your ex?”

Still no phone? A little noise of warning sounded at the back of her mind. Anymore being phoneless was worse than being carless. Most people she knew used their phone for everything. Hell the clinic she worked out of used tablets rather than full blown computers. Every bit of patient data stored on a cloud, receipts and reports just emailed. It was strange he didn't appear to be in a hurry to get himself a new phone. Maybe she was being stupid and judgmental. He did lose a family member recently, perhaps that had been taking more precedence in his mind. Her stomach did a little flutter at the notion that he still bothered to come and simply try to find her in the crowd. The noise of warning died down and was crushed at his comments about Anubis. She gave him a thoughtful tilt of her head and a small smile. "Yeah I guess you could be right. Just not feeling social." Which was strange in itself given that dogs didn't have that sort of complex thought. He was a surprisingly smart dog but he couldn't possibly be that intelligent.

Catty's brain screeched to a halt. He was all hers. Oh goodness the connotations there. If only he could be all hers like in her dream. She gave a shy grin accompanied by a short, awkward laugh. "Cool yeah..." she said distantly. Something in her snapped back to attention, her eyes shooting wide a moment before she settled back down. "Yes, enjoy the fair. Absolutely." An image of Jess slapping her own forehead flashed across her mind. Get it together girl. Hard to do when she could so keenly remember the way he feasted on her like a man starved, made her blood course like liquid fire. It was just a dream! It wasn't real and she really needed to think clearly if she didn't want him thinking she was utterly crazy. That or too stupidly awkward to deal with. Finally she realized that to enjoy the fair and stop day dreaming about that dream she had to move. With a rigidity quite unlike how easily she moved with him on the dance floor or in the bed she managed to weave back into the crowds.

The fair was a massive combination of fine arts, crafts and the occasional cheap Chinese made tchotchke stand. Catty was prone to pausing at the artists that made sculpture or paintings that weren't always quite photorealistic but at least looked like something. She didn't much care of the modern splotchy stuff that never made sense to her. "You know...I like some art and I get that artists need to make a good living too but...man with some of these prices I'll have Target brand art on my walls forever," she said with a small laugh, ensuring they were out of earshot of any of the artists. Catty was just as willing to go anywhere Aeric wanted to pause to look, questioning him on his own preferences for artwork, if he even really cared. He seemed the more rebel, devil-may-care type sort of guy. Maybe he didn't even care about decorated walls. The more they walked and were able to talk about their preferences for pieces the more at ease Catty became. Perhaps not fully her true self, the self she had no idea Aeric already knew, but she was at least a great deal more relaxed. Further down were the crafters with stands of candle, lotions, knitted and crocheted items, even some tents that were selling baked good. All just homey, homemade items. She was particularly drawn to a very pretty handmade shawl made of fine angora, close knitted, dyed a handsome shade of burgundy with a silvery, beaded fringe. While very pretty she certainly didn't bring enough for it and, after some close examination, put it back to wander to a stall that sold hard kiln bones. Massive cow femurs that had been cured and hardened in a kiln. "Guaranteed to last years even for the strongest of chewers!" The man proclaimed. Despite turning down the shawl she purchased one of the bones instead. "I think Anubis will like this," she said with a beaming grin. "He might be being a grump now but he'll be happy with this I think."

As they moved further down and the hour grew a little later they'd be able to hear the bands from the stage playing. Mostly a strange combination of rock and country, sometimes even in the same song. The tents changed to beer and wine tasting. "Here, let me get it. You did get me and my friends a few drinks Friday night," she said and brooked no debate on the matter. Catty decided to give a pineapple infused wine a try. Sweet and tangy. "The music is...strange huh? What kind of music do you prefer?" A typical first date question. They'd already gotten careers out of the way.

Aeric had spent more than enough time witnessing Catty in her natural habitat to know that she was a little put off on the no phone thing. Not to mention his species was naturally intuitive on picking up such emotions… no doubt the lack of phone and varied wardrobe had him looking like some worthless homeless person. Which I guess… technically I kind of am now… Still, there was no use crying over a situation you really couldn’t fix; especially when you had a hot redhead who was all over you whether you had a phone or not. And there was no doubt of that, for Aeric could pick up on that flutter of attraction just as surely as her tinge of apprehension. If his confident smile was anything to go by, Aeric certainly wasn’t letting his cut off from the social world get him down. “Yeah give him some time,” he spoke of his alter ego, “I’m sure he’ll come around.”

His smile turned to grin as she stumbled over her words. “Well I see you’re as articulate as the night we met,” he couldn’t help but tease her a little. Oh he could only imagine the things running through her mind right now. He’d scarcely been able to think of anything but that night they had together, and it had to be messing with her head just as much. As passionate as things got between them, surely it had to be difficult to dismiss as some drunken dream. It was almost maddening to have these events hanging over them… all these things he felt like they should really be talking about were buried in secrets he could never tell. It wasn’t a very good way to start this relationship or… whatever they could call it. He knew that… yet it was too addicting to stop. This was becoming a train wreck you just couldn’t look away from. Nothing to do but go along for the ride…

Aeric kept close o her side as they threaded back in with the crowds and walked the fair. Despite how voraciously he’d taken her just a couple nights before, here in the public he remained a gentleman. He could feel that rigid nervousness, and was perfectly content to just relax and take it easy with her. it was easy to vibe with her when he was so comfortable around her already; a rare thing on a first official date. Hopefully his ease would wear off on her over time, as while Aeric felt like he’d be good with Catty, it was hard to judge with how one sided things were. Silently he knew he had to tell her more about himself; an air of mystery was good but he was teetering on the edge of a little too much mystery. Yet, what could he possibly tell her? ‘So Catty... Remember that dog you saved? Well, funny story…’

“Yeah,” he agreed with her, laughing as he tucked that particular thought away, “And I mean honestly… sometimes Target art is better than the things you’ll find here anyway.” If a certain bland depiction of blues and greens modestly priced at $2,300.00 was anything to go by. Given that the painting looked like an indiscernible mess of blues and greens, Aeric had to assume the high price tag had more to do with the brash, gold framing; that or he just didn’t have a good eye for art. Admittedly he didn’t know much about it, which he confessed when Catty questioned his tastes. “I tend to like Bohemian stuff, though,” he admitted, “I’ve always been drawn to the patterns. Still, I can’t claim I ever really got into art. My dad would have loved it here though. He was a pretty big collector, mostly of anything to do with the Viking age. He was pretty fascinated with Norse culture…” Not that he could tell her just how much; their date would likely end pretty quick if she knew about his family’s moonlight rituals… “My name is a testament to that,” he said, chuckling, “You can’t imagine how many times I had to explain that my name is spelt with an ‘A’. Well… the grapheme ash if you want to get technical but I learned a long time ago to keep it simple.”

Not a whole lot caught his attention at the stalls though; honestly it was hard to focus on art when he was so busy stealing glances at Catty as they strolled through the festival. It wasn’t like him to get so hooked up on a girl, but every gesture she made stoked him with brazen fire. Catty held magnetism the likes of which he’d never experienced, and it was almost maddening to think he had to keep his distance and take this slow when they were already far, far more intimate than she realized. It became easier as she relaxed, the undeniable chemistry taking its natural course; but something about the wait made Aeric ravenous for her. The wolf in him stirred, feeling as eager as when he’d chased her as Skoll. Yet he remained chained like Fenrir; unable to run for her. It was particularly taxing when her eyes lit up, the interest obvious as she studied the fine burgundy shawl. Something about seeing her excited about things made him feel like anything but the big, bad wolf he was claimed to be. God, I’m crushing like a schoolgirl… Aeric chastised himself. He certainly didn’t see things going this direction when he woke up in her apartment.

He was very nearly tempted to pick the article back up and purchase it for her after she’d placed it back down; he’d brought enough money just to ensure he could if the opportunity presented itself. Yet somehow he found himself hesitating now that it did. There was always the chance that it would come on too strong; or send the wrong message what with him ready to drop cash on her when he didn’t even bother to get his phone taken care of. Instead he followed her to the selection of bones, pausing inwardly as he realized she’d decided to buy a gift for him instead… not that she knew who they were truly selecting one for. Chewing on a bone wasn’t exactly his idea of a good time…. But maybe it would be something to do when he was otherwise stuck lying on the floor all day. “Wow you weren’t kidding about him being a big dog were you?” he feigned ignorance upon seeing the size of the femur she purchased. “You sure he’s not a wolf?” Or maybe even a man… He couldn’t help but tease her over the situation a little bit.

The music, odd selection as it was, at least gave the place a little life. Aeric was feeling in pretty good spirits all things considered; too often had he been cooped up in that tiny studio apartment. After all the cabin fever, it felt great to soak in the warmth of of the sun again; to hear the sounds of the world and all its liveliness again. And better yet, things seemed to be going pretty good with Catty so far. The relaxed mood of the beer and wine tasting was a welcome shift, as he was more than ready to relax with her some. He knew things would have to come to an end between them before long; after all he had to make sure there was enough time to make it back to the apartment before her, yet he was far from ready to go back to his flea-ridden where he could do little but watch her and pine.

“Oh I suppose I can let you do that,” he said with a coy smirk as she offered get them drinks, “I still plan to buy you dinner tonight anyway.” While she went with wine, Aeric decided to try a Wheat and Citrus ale, served with lemon, which had a surprisingly malty sweetness. He nursed the drink as they continued to wander, enjoying the flavor even more than he expected. “It’s alright,” he said. “I like Rock well enough, especially some of the older stuff. Country… ehh not so much. All genres have their good and bad stuff though, I like a bit of everything. What about you?” he said, turning to her with a grin, “You a Death Metal girl?” the tone of sarcasm in his voice made it obvious it was a joke; Catty didn’t look anything like the type. Though, just like with the wine the night before, he already knew some of her preferences. Hopefully she wouldn’t wizen up if he continued to cheat…

Grapheme Ash. The meaning behind those words were lost on Catty. She was a science girl through and through, some math too because of physics and chemistry. While she had figured his name had an A in front she didn't fully comprehend what he meant. So she just smiled and nodded some before dipping back to a safer ground. "Norse art huh? Your house growing up must have been pretty wild," she said with a grin hoping her lack of understanding was well hidden. Ask her about chemical equations or any bone in the body and she was there. History and Literature...well Shakespeare was a guy who wrote long and incomprehensible plays. Still she made a mental note about the A if she ever needed to write his name down.

His comments about the size of Anubis were cause for a little laugher. "Funny enough you aren't the first to suggest that. The senior vet, the clinic owner, even said that." She had quickly pushed those doubts away when she had first picked Anubis up. "Wolves haven't been seen in this area for years. I think he's just a really big shepard or something. Probably even a mix. But yeah he's a big boy, but very handsome and usually very sweet." She wondered how long the bone would actually last. Claims from the man said years. Even still he was a massive dog and she imagined had extremely strong jaws. Hopefully he wouldn't splinter the bone too soon. Briefly Catty wondered how he was doing, cooped up and all alone. Why was she thinking of her dog when she was there, on a date, with easily the hottest guy she had ever seen? Focus.

Aeric's comment on dinner made an almost shy flush creep up her neck to her cheeks and ears. She hadn't entirely expected that but was quietly elated. Once she managed to relax around him and not stumble over her words like a babbling baboon she found herself having an even better time than she expected. From what she had seen so far he was...almost perfect. Easy to talk to, when her brain functioned properly, and chivalrous. He hadn't hesitated to step in and deal with Carl. Sure there was the lack of a phone thing, which was strange, but as far as she could tell it was the only thing strange about him. Otherwise she genuinely enjoyed his company. Of course her disturbingly realistic dream might have some part to play there. Oh to see that for real. She wondered how accurate her brain had been in imagining what lay beneath those jeans and dark shirt. Her ears were on fire again and she had to get her mind away from that!

Sly and sarcastic his comment on her musical preference made her splutter her wine just a little. She looked up at him with a flash of nearly suspicious surprise. A very wild guess? He sounded like he was joking but wow...what a joke. After her surprise wore off Catty grinned sheepishly. "You know...you'll have to stop reading my mind like that," she said with a laugh. Of course it was silly, just a wild shot in the dark that happened to hit. "Actually yeah, I love death metal. I mean sure, I like other stuff too...pop, some rap, and sometimes I like to listen to the Disney classics but...yeah, mostly death metal. I know it sounds crazy but...it can be weirdly soothing. Like...not in the moment but it's almost like it just...sucks the negatives out. Though I guess most music does that...except emo music I think...that just shoves the negatives right into you," she added with a small laugh.

Somehow the music sounded better than when they had first arrived at the end of the fair. Catty wasn't sure if it could be attributed to the wine or being there with Aeric. His relaxed ease had seeped into her, once again it could be the wine, and she felt far less nervous than she had been or had anticipated to be. There was something about him. An aura of calm and yet strength. How easily he had moved her about in bed....no that wasn't real. Damn it all. Whatever it might be it was intoxicating. For a first date, and despite the run-in with Carl, it was all going so perfectly. Catty was careful to slowly nurse the wine. No need for crazy sex dreams that night. Of course...it was a very nice crazy sex dream. Though all too soon the sun was sinking and the bands were wrapping up with their final sets. With the wine long since gone Catty's free hand had meandered and drifted seemingly of its own accord. She'd be quick to pull away if the gesture was unwelcome followed by a swift and awkward apology. Juvenile perhaps but she liked the feel of his palm against hers. How could a person feel so giddy and yet so at ease? While not a nervous wreck Catty never particularly prided herself on quick, easy quips and responses, certainly not with the simple ease she felt spending the day with Aeric.

The bands wrapped up and suddenly it was almost eerily quiet in the park. "You know...I think the music grew on me. Not that I'm itching to look them up on iTunes but...it wasn't half bad," she said with a small grin.

Aeric laughed some at her comment. “Well, ours was the only house with axes and a shield on the wall anyway,” he told her, grinning, “My friends got a kick out of that. They liked to come up with stories about us living some kind of secret life.” Ironically, they weren’t too far off the mark. Though the truth of what he and his kin truly were was a lot more difficult to accept than the warriors the youths imagined them to be. It was a little painful thinking back on those times now. The days of a peaceful existence living alongside his family were long gone, destroyed from the moment their presence was discovered by the Hunters and the men who financially backed them. Aeric tried to keep the sorrow and rage he felt from showing in his eyes. The last thing he wanted was to let such emotions impede on his date with Catty, though admittedly it was a little hard to stay in good spirits with the shadowed face of the man who’d nearly gutted him coming fresh to mind.

He still managed to smile though, the time spent with Catty lighting his face with genuine expression despite such demoralizing reminiscence. “Wolf or not he’s lucky to have found you,” he told her, the words more honest than she could possibly realize, “Who knows what would have happened to the poor guy if you hadn’t come along. Too bad he didn’t want to come out with you, I’d have liked to seen him.” Aeric knew how much she loved dogs, especially Anubis, and it was easy to show interest when he was literally talking about himself. But the longer he played this game the more he realized there was no way for this to end but bad. He couldn’t squat at her house forever. He knew she would have to lose her dog or learn the truth very soon, and it was hard to say which eventuality might be worse.

But things were great for the time being. Even with all the secrets he was forced to carry around her, somehow Aeric felt like he could be himself around Catty. Maybe it was just another side effect of having lived with her over the past week, but Aeric felt like he could be at ease and fully himself around her. He wanted to believe that he could openly tell her the truth of his ancestry and how he’d secretly been posing as the dog she loved so much. He could almost hear them just laughing about it, brushing it off as if it were nothing as they continued strolling down the art walk. That was ridiculous of course... It was far more likely to end with him in handcuffs or some other deplorable situation. For now, she would just have to go on believing he was uncannily good at reading her.

And Aeric was all too amused by the way his guess had astounded her. He had to keep from grinning as she sputtered on her wind, noting the slight suspicion and hoping he hadn’t pushed it too far. Not like anyone in their right mind would naturally come to the conclusion though, he told himself while playing along as if it was just a lucky guess. “What, really?” he laughed, “No way I don’t believe you. I was just kidding!” He listened to her list of other genres, green eyes still lit by his genuine smile, “See now Disney music I can believe. You look much more that type. Though, your dancing was a little risqué for something so tame.” Yet it wasn’t the truly the dancing he was thinking back on as he appraised her with a daring look, as though he were more than willing to get her back on the floor. “Soothing huh?” he jumped back to the previous topic, “I think that’s the first time I’ve heard metal described as soothing. Well… whatever gets your Zen on!” he teased her with a chuckle.

Like her he was slow to nurse his drink, having come far too close to exposing the truth to her the last time he decided to throw them back to risk doing it again. Honestly he had a good enough time just being with her, feeling an honest connection with someone for the first time since the tragedy that took his family. It was a lonely existence forced to hide in her apartment, hardly able to speak. But Catty took that all away, making him feel more than a little bit of a sap as he thought about it. It all seemed so pathetic and superficial when he tried to think about it logically. But there was nothing insincere about the way felt when he suddenly found her hand in his, fingers entwining as if it was the most natural thing as they continued to wander. There weren’t even any words needed in that moment. Everything just fit somehow; the gesture saying plenty enough despite the silence. It made for a nice moment as the fair winded down, the two finding themselves much closer to one another by the end of it.

“I could get used to it,” he agreed with a little smirk, though if the way he looked at her was any indication it could have just as easily been the company he was speaking of. “I’m glad you invited me out to this, it was pretty fun.” His hand was reluctant to leave hers, even as they found themselves coming to a stop, left alone as people began to double back and make their way home. “So what kind of food you like?” He asked her with a little grin, thinking back on his promise from earlier. “Or should I just continue my lucky streak and take you somewhere? I seem to be pretty good at figuring out what you like…” It was hard not to relate to the double meaning of the words as images of their previous night together came flooding back. He had to shove that particular memory aside as he stayed on topic. As much as he would have enjoyed taking her home to another night of such festivities, she was a lot less likely to discover her dog was missing if they kept things to a restaurant for now.

It really was just a wild shot and a lucky guess. His laughter and surprised was genuine enough. What else could it be anyways? He didn’t seem the stalker type. Maybe social media but that wouldn’t explain his apparent surprise. She needed to get a grip. Just a crazy lucky guess. Catty smirked at him as he agreed with her choice in Disney. He wasn’t wrong, she looked more the type to listen to Disney or maybe some New Age stuff like Enya or Celtic Women. His comment on dancing brought a raised eyebrow and a sheepish grin along with a reddening to her cheeks. The look said it all and she would be more than willing to give that another try. Selfishly and preferably without anyone else around to divide attentions. Then again she could think of another dance she would rather try with him. No! Stop thinking of that! Sex dream wasn’t real even if it was amazing. She tried hard not to but, not for the first time, she wondered how it would be in reality.

Even as his fingers wound around hers and they stood in amiable quiet while the bands ended she couldn’t stop remembering that dream. It made her warm and fuzzy in all the very, very wrong ways. Though how wrong really? They were both consenting adults and how could someone not have crazy sex dreams about Mr. GQ centerfold? Looks aside Catty was finding a quick attraction to him for other reasons than being very, very nice to look at. Thoughtful, funny, witty, gentlemanly, brave. Sure he was still a bit of an enigma but they’d only just met, that made sense. She hadn’t broached the subject of family remembering his mention of a recent loss. If there was a ‘later’ she was sure he would eventually bring it up.

With silence surrounding them she looked up at his comments towards the music and her eyes lit up with a grin as he said he had enjoyed the fair. “I did too, more than I usually do,” she said with a very slight grimace added to her grin. Not that she wanted to think about Carl but she had dragged him almost every year. He would gripe and moan until they got to the beer tents then he would get utterly plastered. This was worlds better. Plus, what the hell was she doing even giving that dreg a moment of thought as she felt Aeric’s hand warmly enveloping hers. His questions on food brought a small tilt of her head followed by a laugh. “Yeah you’re kind of scary good at it. How about…we hit up one of my favorite places and see if your guess was right, no lies though,” she added with another laugh a small wiggle of her finger at him. “Come on,” she said with a very gentle pull back towards the high reaching buildings of down town. “Hope you don’t mind a bit of a walk.”

Ten city blocks, for some, constituted as more than a bit of a walk. Ugly as they were Catty was glad she had chosen comfortable sandals. They just barely skirted the border of the decent side of town and the side where she lived. A sort of buffer zone between the very wealthy and the not-at-all wealthy. Rather than the multitude of hipster microbrews, bistros, and posh establishments nearer to city center the buffer zone housed mostly simple, family owned places. Often establishments that had been around for it to be passed to a couple of new generations. Catty led Aeric to a building with a garish red, white, and green striped awning with the name ‘Il Duce’ scrawled in peeling gold paint. Near one of the windows, in a half-walled little room sat the tiniest little old lady imaginable. Wearing a long green dress and a white shawl, positively covered in flour, she hunched over a counter with a pasta pressed. Painstakingly making sheaf of past clearly for lasagna dishes. Her hair was scrapped back into a tight bun, covered with a hair net. Catty grinned up at Aeric as if she had just presented the greatest treasure known to man-kind. “So did you guess right?” She asked with a teasing smirk before leading him in.

The interior was plain, mildly decorated with very cheap looking grape vines and a few pictures of famous Italians. Every table, no matter the size, had a red and white checkered cloth draped over top and an empty wine bottle in the center covered in wax dripping from year of burning candle in the neck. Some had enough wax that it could be assumed the first layers were created about the time the great Mob bosses lived and ruled the city. It had decent attendance, they had to wait a little before being seated. It made for a good opportunity to watch the elderly woman making pastas, humming a little repetitive tune to herself. As they were finally seated a basket of very hot garlic bread was placed on the table. Water came in dark red plastic cups delivered by a slim and trim young woman, perhaps newly college aged. “Know whatcha want to eat?” She asked through the chomping and smacking of gum. “Meat ravioli please,” Catty said, not even having to look at the menu. “Sure thing…and you,” she asked Aeric with a searing, side-long glance, her gum suddenly silenced. Catty was not so blind as to not noticed. Part of her wasn’t surprised in the least. She had the same reaction, with a lot more stumbling, when she first saw Aeric. The other part wanted to shove the girl’s gum up her nose so far it would take an Egyptian Priest to remove it.

Once the orders were taken the girl sashayed away. Catty snorted a little into her water. Kids these days. “So besides the fact it reminds me of ‘Lady and the Tramp’ the food here is really, really good. Like…eat it until you die from gastrointestinal perforation good. That’d be the way I’d want to go,” she said with a laugh that was cut very suddenly short. “Oh…shit…sorry that probably wasn’t in good taste with you recent…I’m sorry…” she said as her ears burned and cheeks nearly matched her hair. Stupid, stupid, stupid slip of the tongue.

“Wouldn’t dream of it!” he said of lying. Not about food anyway. Who I am, what I am, where I live and what I do well… I guess that’s a different story. Then again, it was only the job he’d technically fibbed about. Could he really consider the rest a lie if it was just... casually left unmentioned? “Nope not at all, I tend to enjoy long walks,” he said, trying not to think about it, “Lead on, my dear.” And indeed, it was a longer walk than expected, but true to his word he didn’t mind. In fact he enjoyed the extra time they got to spend together, an air of flirtatious banter remaining about him the entire way. He took careful note of the direction they were going though, remaining consciously aware of the fact he had to make it back to the apartment before her, and trying to plot the fastest course to do so in his head. Luckily, her restaurant of choice appeared to be along the way back. That would make things a little easier for him at least.

When they arrived at the small Italian mom and pop place, Aeric found himself pleased with the choice. “Il Duce huh?” He commented upon seeing the name of the establishment, “Like the guy from Boondock Saints. I love that movie.” He laughed some as Catty inquired of his assumption though. “You know, I kind of feel like it wasn’t a fair content. I mean, who doesn’t think of Italian food first? Maybe that’s because I love it so much myself though. But actually, after being surprised by your music tastes I was gonna go with something bloodier like steaks. Just seems more metal.” Aeric gave her a teasing, wolfish grin. The place had a great atmosphere; the smell of fresh cooked pasta wafting on the air was enough to make his stomach growl. But he didn’t mind the wait; things were going so well that even just standing there together, watching the old lady work the fluffy strands of dough through her fingers was a great time. Though he was even happier when they were finally seated, eager to look over the menu as he’d never even heard of this place much less been there before.

“Mmm yes…” he mumbled approvingly, “Fresh pasta... a girl after my own heart.” As if the home cooked meals she unwittingly cooked for him just about every night hadn’t done a good enough job winning him over already. But it seemed she had competition in the way of the waitress. Aeric had enough experience with women to pick up on the girl’s interest, and he had to keep from smiling when he got the slightest glimpse of jealousy in Catty’s eye. As far as he was concerned, the cute veterinarian didn’t have a thing to worry about. While she may have been easy on the eyes, any sort of attraction that even might have been was quelled by the way she came up smacking on her gum. There was no cure for a grating personality, which she might have picked up on in the bored tone of his voice as he ordered the chicken penne. While Catty snorted, Aeric merely shook his head, briefly watching the girl taunt him with her antics before turning back to the woman that had his full attention.

At least Catty seemed to take it in more or less good humor, brushing it off as things between them went right back to its excited, playful nature. Yet that didn’t last long as their conversation quickly devolved into an awkward blunder. The joke hadn’t bothered him; honestly he was having such a good time with her it was almost easy to forget about all the tragedy that led to their meeting. Of course it was never too far, dammed at the edge of his mind, while kept behind foundations that could give at any moment. And now that she brought it up, it was hard not to stop the flood of thought and emotion. He tried not to let his spirits dampen too much, but he couldn’t help the sad smile that took his face as he looked at her.

“No, that’s… that’s alright,” he said, though any words after that were proving difficult to form. He knew she had to be curious, after all they were just getting to know each other and it was such a big detail. But how could he possibly tell her what happened? But he knew he had to say something, it wouldn’t do to just linger in silence or let things fizzle out simple because she’d broached an uncomfortable topic. “…It was my dad who passed,” he finally managed to say, eyes sweeping down to the table. It felt surreal to say it out loud. In truth, he couldn’t have utter confidence in the claim. After all, he’d never actually confirmed his father’s death. Things happened too fast. But with the way that bolt sank into his heart… Well Aeric could just feel that the man who’d come to raise him was gone. The fate of the rest of his pack and family were more left to chance, but if the grief that had been plaguing them for the past several months was any indication, it would be no less grim.

“I’m sorry,” he said, realizing he’d fallen quiet again, “It was very unexpected so it’s still all just… a little unreal for me, you know? But anyway it’s… it’s a part of life, right? It’ll get easier with time.” Somehow he doubted his own words. In almost equal measure of his grief was his rage; his fury over the men that brought this tragedy upon him. He was careful not to let Catty see through him to that part. He didn’t dare tell her the truth that his father was murdered, nor could he ever reveal the dark plan of returning the favor that was steadily brewing in his heart. “But I don’t want this to drag down our date,” he said, shoving away the sadness as his smile became more genuine. “Spending the day with you has me feeling much better anyway.” Truer words had never been spoken, and his spirits seemed high once more as their food was eventually brought out and he eagerly dug into the exquisite meal. Yet even as things between them continued swimmingly, the dark cloud of thoughts remained in back of his mind. And even as they spent the time getting to know each other a little better, Aeric was silently contemplating every possible lead he could shake down tomorrow in order to find the piece of shit hunter who destroyed his life, and eviscerate him.

Catty's guts churned and swirled. She hadn't meant to make a death joke, just sort of slipped out. The sad smile he turned on her was wrenching. Way to go. He clearly forgave her but the way his eyes fell to the table belied some of that. She knew he had to know she hadn't meant to bring it up. Really she hadn't. A thick silence seemed to engulf their small table. His dad. Her stomach did an uncomfortable flip and her heart gave a hard thump against her chest. His dad couldn't be much older than her own. So sudden and tragic. Well she didn't know the full story, she just assumed it was sudden and a shock to the family. Catty raised a hand but stopped a moment, hesitant. Normally she would consider herself decent at comforting people but she had accidentally brought up the subject. Indecision warred in her brain as the quiet, uncomfortable seconds ticked by.

His own apology jarred her mind back. Finally she decided and reached forward to lay her hand over his own. If he wanted to pull back she wouldn't hold him of course. "No it's ok, don't be sorry. I really am sorry about your dad. I...can't even imagine how hard it must be." She would be utterly in shambles if she lost her own father, unexpectedly or not. Any past semblance of questioning him not getting a new phone were utterly erased. If she was in his shoes the last thing she would be thinking about was a new phone. Of course that made his desire to come out that night all the more surprising and endearing. His smile and desire not to darken their date seemed to lift the sullen cloud that had laid around them. Catty returned it, though her own just slightly dampened with a strange mix of rueful sympathy. "I'm happy to be of service," she said with a small, quiet laugh. The same could be said from her end. Of course Anubis had greatly helped with her own significantly less sad and tragic loss, more gain really. Though meeting Aeric had really driven Carl into the far, far reaches of mind and heart only to surface slightly when he decided to make an appearance.

When the food arrived, both fairly ravenous, the table grew quiet again as they dug in. As always it was wonderful. Yet, like the odd music at the fair, somehow tasted even better that day than she remembered. Catty would like to convince herself the elderly woman just added a little extra deliciousness but she knew that wasn't it. She was stupidly twitterpated. Despite the small, awkward interlude it had been a perfect day. Scary perfect. Disney perfect. Still she wondered if this was somehow a weird set up. A very long candid camera sort of affair. Yet even as they finished their meal no one popped out to yell 'surprise! You're on Candid Camera." So maybe this was all somehow real. The young waitress was undaunted and made one more small attempt to garner attention. A number written casually at the bottom of the bill. Catty couldn't help but noticed and gave a small, chuffing snort through her nose. "Well it's a little more elegant than lipstick on a napkin," she said with a laugh.

Once back outside the sun had nearly finished setting. Streetlamps gave the city streets a soft glow, the cicadas dinging in the distance. "Well I'm this way," she said about the gesture but stopped herself not entirely ready to reveal she lived in a rougher area of the city. Of course that meant not inviting him back for...no don't think of the dream. She needed her wits to stay intact. Needed to leave with a decent impression. "Thank you again for dinner and...for coming out. I had a really nice time." Her smile was bright in the dim light of lamps and the quickly disappearing sun. Bright and excited if just a little sheepish. Yet a tiny bold streak caught hold of her. Up on her toes, hands to herself, it was Catty's turn to initiate a kiss. It was soft, gentle, chaste. Quite unlike his in the club or the ones they had shared in....no, dream. Just a dream. Catty let it linger just a sweet little moment before drawing back and dropping back to her heels. Once more her face was red, barely discernible in the dim light, and she tried and failed to tuck a strand of curling red hair behind her ear. "So I...guess...goodnight and hopefully I'll see you again?"

The food helped Aeric to disrupt some of the ominous thoughts brought to mind. Great food and better company was as good a remedy as anything he could hope for. Catty was exactly the kind of person he needed in his life right now. Without her he was bound to go crazy or lose himself to grief, and that was assuming he would have even survived the night of the attack. Even after he decided to hide out at her apartment, he never expected things to take this course. But now that they had, everything was going better than he could have hoped for. Of course, their thirsty waitress had to dig her claws in, trying her best to steer things in the opposite direction. But if the unsurprised and uninterested snort of humor when he saw the number was anything to go by, that wasn’t going to be happening.

“Just because it’s written in pen doesn’t make it classier,” Aeric pointed out while fetching money from his pocket. “I’ve still got hat napkin I’ll have you know. It’s got good character, which is more than I can say about the way I got this one.” He crumpled the receipt for effect, leaving the girl a rather poor tip along with the rest of the money. Though, if a girl that brazen was anything to go by, the rude gesture would probably just fascinate her all the more. He didn’t give her a chance to insult Catty further though; walking his date back outside before she came to collect. Things were coming to an end all too soon, leaving the two of them to linger outside of the restaurant with the inevitable thought of ‘what next?’ Given their intimate history it was a surprisingly difficult moment for Aeric, as his mind ran with all the possibilities. Obviously he couldn’t go back to her place. A brief thought of inviting her to his home crossed his mind, but that was equally audacious. Not only were things in disarray, but there was always the chance the men who turned it over would come back.

“This way for me,” Aeric lied in response, indicating the opposite direction. It felt terribly awkward parting when they had the same destination in mind. Aeric couldn’t even do the ‘nice guy’ thing of offering to walk her home. He had to cut this short and make sure he could run his ass off back to the house without her being any wiser about it. “So did I,” he confessed. He was already planning to kiss her goodbye at the least, when Catty took the initiative and did it first. His lips met hers sweetly, hands instinctively lifting to rest tenderly upon her sides. She left a grin on his face as they parted, a sparkle of promise in his eye. “Oh we’re definitely going to have to see each other again,“ he proclaimed thoroughly teased into wanting more from her. “You’ll hear from me soon.” Reluctantly however, they had to part until then.

After bidding her a goodnight he split off from her, going to opposite direction as promised. However as soon as he rounded a corner and was officially out of her line of sight, Aeric booked it. His feet carried him like the wind, a speed to rival that of his bestial form in his desperation to make it back home before her. The frantic pace drew attention as he cut through a crowd and took a path that would circle him back around. He paid them no mind however, getting back on course just one block down route Catty would be taking. He let nothing slow him, dodging people and traffic alike as he silently prayed he wouldn’t somehow end up fumbling right into her path. But things seemed to work out well enough, his reckless dash putting him ahead of her by several precious minutes. By the time he was actually in the vicinity of her apartment he still traveled with all due caution, scanning the distance to make sure that Catty was nowhere to be seen. Upon confirmation he hurried to her front door, knowing that even with his lead it would not be that way for long.

I really need to make a key for this place or something… He thought, not for the first time as he allowed himself into the door he’d purposely left unlocked. He remedied that as soon as he was safely inside, imitating the way Catty secured the place every time before she left. He sped into the bedroom directly after, beginning the process of disrobing and bundling all his belongings with all the haste he could muster. It cost him nearly all the time he would have beat her by, the sound of a key in the door by the time he had everything stashed under the bed and dropped back into the form of Anubis. His heart was racing, breathing somewhat labored when he bounded into the front room to greet her upon arrival. Though his pants and lolled tongue could easily be chalked up to excitement, given his large tail wagging with vigor and the booming woof he gave her. A performance worthy of an Oscar, Aeric sarcastically chided himself as he lamented over how close he was cutting these excursions.

Definitely going to have to see each other again. That glimmer in his eye melted her heart and turned her legs to rubber. She wanted to say she caught a glimpse of him wanting a bit more but, being a gentleman, let them part of the time being. Well she was the one who had the crazy dream. Good lord was she really acting more like a horndog than a man? Maybe she should write to National Enquirer. Catty's steps were light as air as they parted ways. She couldn't even be sad about saying goodbye, not with a promise like that lingering in the air. Honestly she wasn't even certain she touched the pavement as she headed home. She felt like jumping and dancing, singing whatever random mushy song came to head. Maybe spin on the light poles like 'Singin' in the rain.' She refrained of course, it would be very hard to do in a dress. Her steps were easy, slow and languid as she revisited the extraordinarily perfect date in her mind. It was even better than the sex dream....because that was just a dream. Just a dream whereas she actually spent half the day with Aeric.

A few city blocks, hundreds of happily wistful sighs and she made it to her apartment building. Outside, just as she was approaching, Raymond was getting out of his tiny car. How the massive man fit in a Honda Civic was beyond her capabilities to understand. She was more of a biology and anatomy nerd, physics wasn't her strong suit. "Hey Catty," he said with a genial wave. "You're looking happy this evening," he added with a sly smirk. "Yeah...you could say that," she said with yet another happy sigh. Raymond laughed, "nothing like a rebound date." Catty nodded in agreement for a moment but then shook her head. "Hopefully more than that...have a good night at work?" Raymond only shrugged some, "same as usual. Few creeps can't keep their hands to themselves." He shoved a meaty hand into the other and cracked his knuckles. It was like someone cracking tree limbs as it echoed around the parking lot. "Well I'll see you around Catty," he said with a wave as he headed to his apartment. "Mmm...yes see you," she said as she headed up the stairs to her own.

Keys fumbled a moment before she got her fingers to cooperate and unlock the door. The moment the door swung open she saw the great, black dog bound happily out of her room. Catty's happy little smile brightened even more as she saw Anubis with a happy face and wagging tail. "Have a good day boy? I did too," she said with another happy sigh as she shut the door and locked it up for the night. For a brief moment she was utterly distracted, unable to wipe the dopey smile off her face. Finally she got her wits together enough to remove her shoes and plop onto the floor with Anubis. Her fingers dug into the thick, soft fur and she ruffled him some. Finally she couldn't contain herself and hugged her dog close with and excited sort of squeal, though was quick to let go knowing dogs weren't always fans of hugs. "Best day ever! Mmmm well finding out I could keep you might be...best date ever then! Ah! How did I get so lucky?" As she stroked a ruffled Anubis's fur she thought back on the week. Sure the break up with Carl but from that point on it was straight to the moon. Finding Anubis was rough at first but she couldn't be happier with him around and then meeting Aeric. Suddenly she flopped onto her back, arms and legs spread as she stared wistfully at the ceiling for a bit. "If this is a dream too I'm going to be seriously pissed...oh!" Suddenly she sat back up and snatched the bag with the cow femur in it. "Brought you a present handsome," she said with a grin as she brought the bone out for him. "I'll have you know I passed up a very pretty shawl to get this for you so you better like it," she said with a small laugh.

With a final pat she got up off the floor and headed to her room. She took off the dress and tossed it into the hamper along with the nicer bra and underwear before heading into the bathroom for a quick, short shower. Makeup removed, hair in a loose bun, she pulled on pajama pants and a tank top before heading back into the front room for some wine and cooked up dinner for Anubis. Once it was ready she put it down for him and settled in for a little TV before bed. She didn't last long. With all the joy and elation of the day, plus the bit of wine, she wound down quick. Catching herself nodding off she finally got up and headed for bed. "Come on boy, bed time," she called and patted her bed. She actually liked him sharing the bed. The warm weight was very welcome even if it was summer. Come winter it would definitely be welcome.

Monday came with a return to the usual routine. Her gentle alarm woke her up, she staggered to the kitchenette for some coffee. While she drank her coffee she played around on social media. Strange, it had never occurred to her to take pictures during the date. She was so busy having fun she didn't even think about it. Food was made for Anubis before she went to put on her workout clothes and packed up her lunch. "Ok boy be good, I'll be home later," she said with a few affectionate strokes of his head before heading out the door. She came home at her usual time, made dinner for them and her lunch for the next day, watched some TV and headed to bed. Wednesday was little different.

Thursday came and the morning proceeded as usual. "I'll be a little later boy, need to go to the grocery. Be good." Why she always said that when he was a model citizen she didn't know. When she got to work it was all out chaos. Some emergencies had come in during the night. Dr. Henderson usually handled those as he lived so close to the practice. She barely had time to put her lunch in the fridge before diving headfirst into the chaos of a crashed animal control truck. Four dogs and twelve cats all with varying injuries. They had lost one of the dogs in the night and another wouldn't make it. Four of the cats were already gone and Catty had to hold two more as they were mercifully let go. Internal bleedings, broken legs. The three rescued kittens fared the best as they had been upfront with the driver in their small carrier. The morning was a flurrying whirlwind of activity. All scheduled appoints for the day had long since been called and cancelled. Only two patient parents threw fits over the phone. As the afternoon encroached the activity died down. Those they had saved would recover well enough.

Dr. Henderson pulled Catty aside once they had the patients settled. "I need you to come in tonight and stay here over night with them. So go home now and come back, say, around ten?" Catty was taken aback for a moment. "It's your practice but...you've been here all night already..." Dr. Henderson gave her a gentle smile. "Don't worry, I'm going home to get some rest too but the techs are taking shifts too and they know to call me if anything happens between now and when you come in. Do you think you can handle this by yourself tonight?" His confident but weary smile made a little glow of pride form in Catty's chest. "Of course Dr. Henderson." With a relieved smile he patted her shoulder. "I knew I could count on you."

3:00pm and Catty was already heading home. At least the grocery wouldn't be busy. She stopped to buy the usual list: vegetables, fruits, roots, grains, several pounds of meat for Anubis and chicken for herself, usual fare but with a great deal of meat. The butcher asked if she was feeding an army of wolves. There it was again. Catty just laughed it off before heading home. Just after four she pulled into her parking spot and gathered up her groceries. Home a good two hours before she normally got home on Thursday. She gathered up all her groceries and headed to the stairs. Humming to herself she was a few steps from the landing when she realized the door to her apartment was open. Her heart slammed into her chest, her guts turned to water and her blood to ice. The wise thing would be to call the police. "Anubis," she said quietly to herself as the groceries slipped out of her hands. Eggs shattered, milk spilled over the stairs, everything else tumbled down landing in various spots on the stairs. Her body moved before she had time to consider. She ran up the last few steps in twos and flung herself into her apartment. "Anubis!" She called, her voice a panicked warble.

If she thought her blood was cold before it turned arctic as Carl turned around. Her bottle on wine in his hand, empty. His face droopy and red, eye unfocused but a smiled bloomed across his face. "Baby...come here and give me some love," he slurred. Catty's insides squirmed as she looked around. No sign of Anubis anywhere. "What did you do to my dog?" She demanded loudly as she moved to check the bedroom. No was Anubis would have let the creep in without a fight. No, Anubis wasn't in the bedroom. "What fucking dog? Oh wait...you mean..." Suddenly he doubled over in laughter. "Fucking dog...woman I thought you were smart." Catty rounded on Carl, her face turning a deep shade of red. "Stop laughing, where the fuck is my dog!" She nearly screamed. Carl still laughed, pounding a fist on his thigh. "Fucking dog...he's not a dog." Suddenly Carl stopped laughing, his face contorting into dawning rage. "You mean your new boyfriend? Did you...no way..."

Despite being drunk Carl's shambling steps were quick. Catty made a lunge for the door but Carl got there first, slamming it shut. "Did you...fuck him?" He asked. Catty's head jerked back in sudden shock. She was quick to get over the surprise of such a blunt question only to have her anger return. "It's none of your business is it? Now what did you do to my dog!" Her voice getting louder and shriller each time she asked the question, her heart pounding a steady rythm in her ear. "He's not a fucking dog! He's a fucking monster. It wasn't supposed to be like this," Carl raved, swinging the wine bottle around. "They said you'd just take care of him, not fuck him...." He groaned and swayed a moment before settling his eyes on her. "You...sick...did you fuck him while he was a dog?" Catty's anger was slowly taken over by confused concern. Her red eyebrows pulled together, head tilting. "What are you...talking about? Fuck who...wait....it's not your business who I fuck. You're the one who cheated! Get out! Where is my dog?"

"Cheat?!" Carl suddenly shrieked, sending the wine bottle flying. It shattered into her few picture frames, breaking the flimsy table they stood on. "They made me!" He was raving again. "They said it would help you get the wolf! They said when they got you I could have you again! You're meant to be with me! Me, not the fucking dog man!" Catty's anger was definitely gone and replaced by confusion and fear. Carl was clearly out of his mind drunk. Never mind the destroyed pictures she needed to get out and get help. "What...what are you...talking about? Who's they?" Distract him with questions. Catty moved slowly towards her sofa, to the side and away from Carl to try and draw him away from the door. "The men in suits! Government guys. Said it would all be arranged buuuuut no! You had to go and fuck the wolf man." Carl threw his head back and let out a high, terrible mockery of a howl. "Wolf...man...?" Catty asked slowly as Carl began to follow as she wanted. "Yeah...that dumb shit you were with at the fair. He's a wolf...that fucking dog you have is him. He's the wolf. You didn't know? Did you just let your precious doggy fuck you? I'm the one you're supposed to be with, not him!"

He was insane, utterly crazy. "Yeah...sure...the dog and Aeric...same thing...right..." She had to at least pretend to agree to try and get him calm. Catty made a break for the door when Carl was far enough away. Despite he time at the gym she wasn't fast enough. With a surprisingly quick and mighty leap she was tackled to the ground with a mighty shriek of fright. She squirmed and fought but the mania and alcohol gave her ex and impressive and scary strength. As she fought she screamed for help praying anyone would hear. "You're mine! You'll be mine! They said it's my reward for helping! Once they get you and kill your doggy fuck boy." Catty kicked and scrabbled but Carl was unhinged. He managed to her her arms pinned under his boney shins and wrapped his hands around her throat. "Mine! You hear me?" He kept screaming 'mine' as his hands wrapped around her throat and began to squeeze. Catty gasped, her screams for help coming to a rasping halt.

Aeric returned all of Catty’s affections as she joyously dropped down with him. After denying her the intended walk through the fair it was the least he could do. It seemed like she’d forgotten all about that though, left drunk from their date. It was endearing to see her so happy and to know that he was the cause. What he wouldn’t have given to be a man instead, and to have their embrace take a very different course. Luckily her gift of the femur came in handy there, giving him a chance to gnaw out his frustrations after he saw her shed the dress with undergarments to follow. Oh man what I wouldn’t give to just slip into that shower… He was thinking, the supposedly sturdy bone already beginning to weather beneath his powerful jaws. Such desire remained even after dinner when the two found themselves alone in bed. He could not fall asleep knowing they were so dangerously close. Somewhere in the middle of the night he was unable to take it, his body shifting of its own accord as he lay beside her. He tried nothing so bold as the last time, only gentle caresses to soothe his need of touch. But at the first sign of a stir, the form of Aeric was gone, replaced by a ball of fur curled at her side.

When Monday came and Catty made her way to work, Aeric wasted no time in seeing to his own affairs. He showered and dressed with an unnatural haste before hurrying out of the apartment. He couldn’t be certain how long his errands would take, but if he was looking at everything on the agenda he needed for more than a simple work shift. His first stop was to his cellular company, where after an excruciating wait of almost two hours he was finally able to get a new phone up and running. Fetching the napkin left folded in his pocket, he read the blotchy numbers and added Catty to his list of contacts. He sent her a quick and simple text: ‘Hey Catty, this is Aeric finally got my new phone. Maybe now we can plan to meet somewhere instead of searching a crowd for you.’ He left it at that for now, quickly going through his list of contacts after. His first thoughts naturally fell to calling a member of the Pack. He scrolled by ‘Dad’ with a pang of disquiet, going down instead to one of his siblings. But as his finger hovered over the one he felt most likely to have gotten away.

What if they’re just waiting for me to call one of them? He realized with alarm. The men working against his kind were mysterious at best, but after so many years of this struggle they had come to know them rather well. Powerful, high ranking and with near unlimited resources, tracing phone calls was likely a trivial matter for his enemies. So he tucked the phone away for now, relenting instead to count out the remainder of money on his person. The cellphone had cost him heavily, and he was already regretting having not taken more of the stash when he had the chance. I’m going to have to go back, he realized, legs already carrying him that direction. Enough time passed that hopefully the hunters would have forgone interest. Besides, he’d made the visit without alerting suspicion once before already. And if one of the others did escape, there’s still a chance they could have gone back. At least if the money’s gone I’ll know one of them is alive.

But the money was there, remaining untouched which Aeric confirmed by counting it all out again. After a long moment of indecision he once again decided not to take the remainder. Maybe it was out of a foolish desire not to abandon this place entirely or the hopes that someone he cared about would still return and find something that could possibly save their life. Either way, he left half of the remaining money, trying to ignore the nagging uncertainty. It was as bad to leave this much money lying around as it was to keep it in your pockets. Before leaving, he went back to his bedroom, deciding to swap out his clothes for a different outfit. At least if and when I see Catty again, I won’t be wearing the same thing for the third time in a row. After checking his appearance in the mirror, ignoring the way his pockets bulged with the stacks of cash, he decided the best thing to do was go home for the day. Too much time had been wasted to risk getting caught up in anything else. Tomorrow, the real hunt would begin.

Things went apace that night and the next morning, which saw the routine of Aeric dressing before hiding the rest of his money. Man what would Catty even think if she found this… This has to be the stupidest shit I’ve ever done. There was no answer for what she would think; the idea of finding 17k and a gun under his bed was unfathomable. Well beats the dead animals most dogs drag in, he thought, counting out enough to take with him. He already had an idea for a lead in solving the mysterious of his family’s disappearance, and he knew full well that like any little weasel, he might have to grease his palms with a sizable bribe. He would avoid that if possible, but intimidating as Aeric was, sometimes physical threat wasn’t enough to scare the sort of beings he associated with…

Lucky for him that Catty lived on the wrong side of town, because it’s exactly where he would find his man. It’d been years since he last dealt with the sly peddler who’d earned his bad reputation surviving creatures and hunters alike. Everyone knew the little bastard played both sides, but more often than not his connections kept him important enough to both sides that neither was willing to make too big a fuss of it. It may have kept him alive in the long run of things, but unfortunately for him it also meant he was easy to find. A couple of familiar faces in one of the most run down sections of town pointed him in the right direction for nothing more than a couple bucks, and before long Aeric was on his way to pay a visit to his old ‘friend.’

He found his quarry in a dingy old alleyway; his back turned with two other men huddled in close as if discussing some object of interest. So engrossed in their secret little discussion they remained blissfully unaware of the tall man with dangerous green eyes waltzing right up to them. Aeric came within a few paces and stopped, marveling at how oblivious the trio seemed to be. “Eddy! Long time no see,” he announced himself, causing the heads of all three men to pop up like a family group of meerkats. As soon as the two strangers locked eyes with Aeric, they uttered curses and made to bolt at once. Eddy tore his eyes away from the intruder and ran a step forward, waving after them.

“Wait, come back!” but it was too late, his potential customers gone, leaving the tubby, short-statured man to shove a sketchy looking bag back into his pocket. “God damn it, Aeric!” He moaned, turning around to face him. “I can’t make a living with you scaring away all my business!” His pudgy face was flush with anger so hot it threatened to burn away the wisps of hair left on his balding head. “You know how much money you just cost me?” Though, his anger quickly turned to fear and surprise as Aeric lashed out and snagged him by the collar of his shirt. He made to shout, but the words were lost as his back was slammed against the nearby wall, shoving the air right out of his lungs.

“You think I give a fuck about you losing some junkie’s money?” Aeric raged a hint of the wolf within showing in the way he snarled. “I know the kind of people you really work for, you piece of shit!”

“I ain’t done that kind of work in months!” Eddy protested, his voice sounding feeble as he struggle against his powerful oppressor. “Whatever it is you want I don’t have it, alright! I don’t fuck with that shit anymore. Alright, man? You want to have a good time? You want some pills or something? I’m your guy. I don’t sell the Hunters—“

“Bullshit!” Aeric slammed him against the wall again, silencing him at once. “Everyone knows you talk to Eddy if you want some crazy shit from the old days. If you weren’t still selling to the Hunters they’d have skinned your sorry hide or put you in a cage a long time ago, pussy cat. But you won’t have to worry about them because I’m going to do it myself unless you tell me what I want to know.”

“Which is?” Eddy growled, giving up on his futile struggle as his deep brown eyes stared right back into Aeric’s.

“A hunter with a weird ass silver sword and crossbow led an attack on my family just over a week ago. I want to know who he is and why he’s after wolves. He had a fucked up scar on his face. And one on his hand now too,” he realized, thinking back on the way he felt that asshole’s skin tear beneath his wicked fangs.

“Yeah well I don’t know nothing about no hunter with swords and scars or anything about any fucking wolves! Sorry you wasted a trip dog. Now if you don’t mind kindly fucking off so I can get back to my business...”

But that wasn’t good enough for Aeric. Eddy had to know more than he was letting on. He simply refused to accept anything else. “Guess I’ll just have to beat it out of you then, won’t I, Kitty?” No sooner than he raised his fist, Eddy reacted. In an instant, he was gone, an empty shirt clutched in Aeric’s hand as the rest of his victim’s clothes dropped to a pile on the floor. A heartbeat later, a furry form in the shape of a cat to rival the size of a dog shot out from between his legs and took off down the alleyway.

“Hey you mother fucker!” Aeric shouted in alarm, throwing aside the shirt as he rounded on his heels and took off after the animal. Fucking son of a fucking…. Gods damned….!!! He cursed to himself as he burst out of the alleyway and caused a stir from a group of a people walking. He shoved his way past them, keeping his eyes locked with the dull brown coat of the feline running across the street. How the hell was he supposed to catch him now? He couldn’t shift in front of all these people… Yet, with the way he barreled through and took off like a mad man chasing a cat, he probably appeared just as outlandish; especially when a car had to slam on its breaks, nearly running Aeric down while he heedlessly gave chase.

Eddy however, had no intentions of being caught. His swift paws saw the ground zipping by with Aeric quickly falling behind. On the other side of the street he wasted no time in dashing back into the alleyways, forcing Aeric to put on a burst of speed just to keep the cat in his sights. “Fucking nagual!” he shouted in complaint, rounding a corner only to see Eddy leaping up a high wall that served as a dead end for his pursuer. Aeric had to skid to a stop, left to feel like a fool as the massive feline pranced several feet above his head, swishing his tail and looking down at him tauntingly before hopping down abaft the other side. Grumbling, the lycanthrope afford no time for rest, whipping back around and dashing back the way he came. He was damned if he was going to lose him. Not now, not when he felt the answers he needed were so readily at hand.

Eddy meanwhile was already celebrating his victory as he bounded along the alleyway, confident there was no way his opponent would catch up with him now. The loss of his goods and his clothes would be lamentable, but circling back could easily see him back in the chase. Just as the discontent feline was weighing the options of turning back around, a black shape came flying in out of nowhere, and just like that the nagual was pinned beneath a massive, furry paw. A sinister growl bounced off the walls of the alleyway, ringing clear the threatening intent as Aeric leaned in close, snarling at his catch. Eddy yowled, wiggling in protest, but was powerless against such a massive opponent. The more he struggled, the louder the wolf threatened, his jowls an inch away and lathered with drool.

Suddenly, it was no longer a feline within his clutches, but a fat, naked man in clear distress and disgust. “Eugch!” He groaned, a human hand breaking free to wipe away some of the slobber that landed on his face. “A LRIGHT, ALRIGHT!!” He cried in protest as Aeric came in closer, pearly fangs snapping near his nose. “I’ll talk!” But that was not enough to make the wolf relent, his sharp eyes narrowing. “Like I said, I don’t know nothing about no scarred hunter!” he spurted out quick as he could, “Nor what he wants with you or your pack. But…” He struggled to say the rest, but another threatening rumble helped him find the words. “I heard about a place in town where they might be smuggling Weres…”

Slowly, the wolf backed away, letting the pudgy man rise. He retook the form of Aeric a moment later, drawing Eddy to throw his hand up over his eyes in another gesture of disgust when he saw the man’s naked body. “God, put a sock on that thing or something will you! How do you even fuck a girl with something that small?”

“That’s funny,” Aeric said with a voice that spoke of no humor, “Take a good look, I’m sure you miss being able to see yours over your stomach.” Though now was not the time for literal dick measuring. “Where are the weres being taken?”

“A big ole house on the upper-east side,” Eddy explained with a grin, “I’m told it’s owned by some senator. Though you can be sure he’s not taking them there for cocktail parties.”

“And what does some rich senator want with a bunch of were-creatures?”

“Are you aware of just how much money there is in dogfighting?” Eddy said, sounding bored with this conversation already, “Well imagine how much profit you can make when you swap the dogs for werewolves and invite all your rich buddies?” Eddy laughed, shaking his head. “They’re treating you beasts like Poke’mon. And killing you when you lose.”

“Us beasts? You think you’re so much better? You’re just the same thing with a different name, Eddy. What’s to stop them from throwing you in one of those rings?”

“Because I’m smart enough to stay on their good side kid. And if you were any kind of intelligent you’d do the same, rather than sniffing around asking questions.”

“Well luckily you are in good with them Eddy,” Aeric said, looking at him seriously, “That means you get to live another day. Because tomorrow you’re gonna use those connections and get me into that Senator’s house. I’d like to see one of these fights myself.” The nagual made no shortage of complaints and protests, but Aeric would have none of it, leaving the cat to yowl as he walked back to his clothes and quickly redressed before someone happened upon them. And though it took the promise of ending all nine of his lives, Aeric finally got the tubby bastard to agree to his plan. “There’s a good puss,” Aeric said, grinning as he pulled his shirt back on, “Now run along and get your drugs before those customers come back and find them.” Eddy glared in response, but argued no further before dropping back to his bestial form and springing back up over the wall.

The two of them regrouped the next day, fully clothed and in human form as they made their way towards the lavish manor on the upper east-side. “You realize this is crazy right?” Eddy continued to grumbled while Aeric hailed down a cab. “These guys are big time, Aeric. They’re not just going to let some punk show up and demand his way in.”

“They will if you do your job and convince them. Besides, I thought you spoke with someone and mentioned us coming?”

“I did but look at you! You don’t fit in with these people. My connections only go so far! At beast you’re going to get us both killed. At worst, you’ll get us locked in chains before we’re killed in one of those fucking death matches!”

“Well either way at least I won’t have to hear you talking anymore.”

Aeric had their driver stop a couple blocks away from their destination, not wanting the high-society crowd spot them showing up in a taxi. Arriving on foot wasn’t bound to be much better, but it also made things less conspicuous if he saw the place and decided it would be better sneaking in instead. But upon actually seeing the mansion, any thoughts of such infiltration were completely lost. “That’s not a house,” he said quietly to Eddy, “It’s a god damn fortress!” The home had to be at least four stories, with sentries posted at the front gate and throughout the large grounds. Aeric felt uneasy as they approached the front gate, fighting the urge to look up at the cameras homed in on them.

“Like I said, bad idea,” Eddy told him while they were still out of earshot. But as they approach the guards he put on his happiest face, sharing a quick conversation with one of the two men who he apparently recognized. He introduced the man to Aeric, though did not reveal the lycan’s true identity, calling him Aiden instead. Aeric went along with the ruse, trying to commit the fake name to memory as the two of them were permitted entry with the warning not to cause any trouble. Eddy led them through the opened gates with a brisk pace, and Aeric tried to quash his sense of doubt after they came closing shut behind them. No turning back now, he thought as they stalked through the shadow of the giant house. His mind ran with all the possibilities of what could happen if he got caught. Strangely, he thought most of how Catty would be affected. No doubt she would be devastated by the loss of her dog and potential boyfriend both.

Better not to think about that shit, Aeric told himself when they reached the front door. Another couple of guards stopped them as they came near. After having been let through the front there was no further questioning, but both Aeric and Eddy found themselves being patted down. Only once both men were cleared of having any weapons, were they finally allowed inside. But even then they were not given the reins of trust. A member of the security remained with them, leading them swiftly through the house so they would not lose their way. But that didn’t stop Aeric’s eyes from wandering, drinking in every detail. He committed the route they took to memory, just in case he had to find his way alone at any point. It was a lot to remember as their guide led them down a series of halls before coming on yet another guarded door. With a nod however, the sentry opened the door, permitting them into a huge stairwell that led down into a basement area.

As they began the descent, the sound of raucous, cheering voices reached their ears. Through another set of doors and they found the source. Bright, fluorescent light came pouring through the entry-way, making Aeric’s eyes blear as he stepped into a make-shift coliseum of sorts. A large grandstand circled about a massive, caged pit. The crowd was larger than expected, everyone shouting in excitement as they cheered and shouted, praised and cursed as they leaned hungrily over the railing or jumped excitedly out of their chairs. Even Aeric’s attention was locked center-stage, focused on the action going on below them. In the center of the ring was a wolf and a bear, unmistakably were-creatures based on the intelligent look gleaming in their eyes. Fastened around each of their necks was a gaudy, silver color. Upon closer inspection, Aeric noticed there were strange markings inscribed on each of the bands. That’s the same language I saw on that asshole’s sword! He realized with a start. His heart was practically racing over finally having found a connection to the man he searched for.

But before he could thing about it too much, the bear lunged, narrowly missing the wolf who snapped back in reply. The two began a chaotic dance, claws and teeth flying in every direction. It was a short affair however, as soon a yelp of pain rang out, bouncing echoing off the walls as the bear caught the wolf between his jaws. A terrible crunch followed, bringing an abrupt end to the canine’s cries before the mighty beast lashed his head and threw the corpse away. The lifeless body of the shaggy grey wolf slammed into the bars before thudding to the ground. The display left Aeric burning with a white-hot fury; it had not been anyone he knew, but it was all too easy to envision the contrary. A group of men entered the ring shortly after, brandishing weapons on the bear, who wisely knew to back away. Certain he was not a threat, two orderlies came in after, retrieving the body of a wolf and dragging it away. In its wake, a large, red streak of blood was left across the ghost-white floor of polished marble.

Eddy ushered Aeric on, moving him away from the scene before his enraged gawking drew anyone’s attention. They found seats away from anyone else, and while Aeric felt sick to his stomach over witnessing anything else like that, he knew it was necessary. He had to know if anyone from their pack had been taken here. The announcers voice sounded off just as they settled in, coming from two large speakers in either corner of the room.

“And our defending champion continues his reign!” he said excitedly, drawing murmurs from the crowd. “We’ll see if that winning streak continues when our next match begins in a few minutes! The odds will be posted momentarily, with our lovely ladies coming around for your bets shortly after!”

As the voice died off, a monitor came to life on the other side of the room, listing the names of the next two combatants. ‘The Grizzly Terror’ was obvious enough, but his contender ‘Snow White’ was a little less so. Upon seeing the odds and the way the werebear had torn apart one challenger already, Aeric couldn’t help but feel sorry for whatever poor creature would be facing such a massive beast. The last thing he wanted to do was contribute to this blood sport, but in the interest of keeping their cover he put $100 down on Snow White when the collectors came around. Eddy was far more excited about it, placing a large sum on Grizzly Terror and flirting with the girls as they took his money.

“How can you be enjoying yourself?” Aeric snapped when they were out of earshot again. “This is sick.”

Eddy snorted, brushing him off. “Shit like this happens all over the world ‘Aiden.’ There’s nothing we can do about it so why sit there moping? The way I see it, I’m stuck here with you so I might as well make a little money. Besides, if those Weres didn’t want to end up in chains maybe they shouldn’t have let themselves get caught. Shall I weep for every fool in the world?”

Before they could argue further, the two of them were cut off by the announcer’s voice proclaiming the next round. Aeric’s breath caught in his throat when he saw a huge she-wolf with beautiful, pure-white fur step into the arena. Her fierce blue eyes jumped all around, narrowing at the faces that jeered from above. They fell lastly on her opponent, where they locked with a glint of iron will. She appeared lean, yet fast and powerful, capable of proving a threat if the bear got on the wrong side of her snarling maw. “Freja!” Aeric quietly exclaimed. He motioned to leap out of his chair, but Eddy quickly threw a hand out to stop him. Why is she fighting? Why hasn’t she tried to shift or run? Doubtless she was kept here on threat of death, but Aeric knew his sister. Proud and stubborn, Freja would surrender her life long before giving these vile people what they wanted. Yet here she was, and before Aeric could contemplate further action, there was the sounding of a bell.

The bear lunged forward at once, coming at Freja with a swipe of his razor-sharp claws. But the white wolf was like lightning, dodging the assault and dashing to the other side of the arena. With a roar the bear spun around and gave chase, coming in for another lunge only for Freja to snarl and wheel away once more. The crowd roared in momentum with the fight, their voices thunderous. But Aeric could barely hear them, everything else tuned at as he focused on the battle with a growing fear for his sister’s safety. It quickly became apparent her strategy was to tire the bear out. She was doing a good job of it so far, even managed to dive in and catch his flank with her wicked jaws. But the bear was powerful enough to yank away, gaining a bloodied hide before swiping at Freja and sending her back on the defensive.

Her speed gave her the advantage, but there simply wasn’t enough room to maneuver the way she needed. Before long the bear was able to anticipated her limited range of movements, and cut her off. Hemming her in, Freja soon found her back against the wall. Snarling like the cornered wolf she was, her fur bristled as she lowered herself, looking for a means of escape as her opponent prepared to rush. When the moment came, Freja jutted forward, attempting to dip out from the left. But she was too slow, the bear’s reach too great. A formidable paw swung around, catching her in the side and sending her tumbling. Freja yelped in pain as sharp claws tore through her flesh and the breath fled her lungs. She struggled to get up, eyes-striking with panic as the bear came in for more. Aeric could only sit and watch, helpless as jaws clamped around his sister’s throat. By some miracle the slave-collar she wore saved her from the utter carnage suffered by her predecessor, but he knew the damage was extensive by the time the bear finished thrashing and tossed Freja aside like a rag doll. Her gorgeous white coat was stained an ugly shade of crimson when she hint the ground, every breath appearing a struggle. Aeric had never felt such a wrench in his heart, nor had he ever felt so useless or weak as he did in that moment. The scene was painstakingly unreal, and all around him came crashing applause and cheers over the bloody battering that just took place. His sister was just mauled half to death before his eyes and people were happy about it. Even Eddy had just won money from her misery, but he was so stricken with emotion he couldn’t even process that. It was a wonder he could even hold himself together and remain rooted to his seat. The latter took serious effort when he saw the group of men enter the arena to drag his sister away like the wolf before her.

“We can’t do anything for her now,” Eddy cautioned when he saw the struggle in Aeric’s eyes. “Look around you. One misstep and you’ll be even worse off than she is.”

Aeric knew he was right. If the security watching the ground wasn’t enough, a path way extended out from the skybox above them. Men paced along it, assault rifles held ready in their hands as they surveyed the happenings below them. A false move here would see him riddled with bullets. Clearly, Eddy wasn’t lying when he said there was a lot of money in a Were-fighting ring. To think some sick fuck built all this beneath his house… a member of the government no less. if Freja’s still alive after that, I have to get her out of here. It seemed impossible; the place was an armed compound, after all. But there was no question in his mind, it had to be done. He would have been content to figure it out there and now had Eddy not been there to impart what little wisdom remained in his tiny cat brain. After talking him out of a daring proposition, they were forced to remain, watching multiple rounds of slaughter until they’d stayed long enough to leave without suspicion.

Aeric never felt quite so sick or miserable as he did when they finally left. He initially planned to find some way to sneak back into the house, but just as they were escorted in, they were escorted out. He could feel the eyes boring into him with every step, the lack of trust evident in sentries. It was obvious they were well paid and well-trained men. With neither Eddy nor Aeric being a regular face, they watched the men like a hawk. Eddy continued his attempt of talking sense into Aeric, urging him not to do anything he’d regret. Aeric just ignored him, his mind already made up. Parting ways with the shifty nagual couldn’t have happened soon enough, leaving Aeric to head back to the apartment before he risked Catty coming back to an empty home. That was the last thing he needed. I just need at least one more night… he thought, sensing the end of his stay with Catty on the horizon. Tomorrow I’m going for Freja… no matter what.

Once back home he followed his daily ritual of undressing and bundling up his goods. Lastly he checked his phone, making sure it was on silent so as not to alert Catty he was keeping it here in secret. He’d taken to texting her occasionally, never anything serious or coming up with a solid plan for a next date. Hopefully she wouldn’t come to realize the pattern of him only texting when she was away at work; never at night when she was actually home and free. I guess it doesn’t matter now, he realized, putting the phone away, Depending how things go tomorrow… I might not ever see her again. It was a harsh epiphany, but there was no shirking his resolve. As enthralled as he was with his unexpected roommate, family had to come first. So it was he decided to spend as much quality time with Catty as he could Wednesday night, ‘Anubis’ showing perhaps the most affection he’d mustered so far. As they relaxed on the couch his head never left her lap, keeping her legs warm right up until they called it a night. Again he took the form of a man that night, watching her sleep with adoration as nerves over what he was planning bundled up inside. Before changing back, he placed one last soft kiss upon her plush lips, and slumbered restlessly until morning.

Aeric was a ball of nervous excitement Thursday morning. He watched Catty leave with doleful eyes, silently hoping the image of her walking out the door wouldn’t be the last he saw of her. But he wasted no time once she was gone, heading to the room and fetching his things. Once he was fully dressed he checked the pistol, making sure a bullet was ready in the chamber before tucking the weapon away and overlooking the small stack of money he’d been hoarding. He took a fair sum of it, enough to get him by an emergency and not encumber him to carry. The rest he shoved back below the bed, satisfied that in the worst case scenario, at least it would be left there for Catty to find. If nothing else, that would be his way of repaying her. With everything in order, he left. Part of him wondered if he should lock the door for the first time, but better judgement told him not to. There was no guarantee he wouldn’t be coming back after all.

Steeling himself, Aeric made the journey back to the Upper-East side. Once again he had his cabbie stop some odd blocks away, but this time he approached the massive estate from a different direction. I have to find a plausible way in and out of there… Though as he began to long, tiresome process of staking the place out, it became painstakingly clear that would be much easier said than done. The place was well guarded, with eyes or cameras covering just about every angle. Nothing could be done about the video surveillance, but the guards… There had to be some way to get by them. After a couple hours of searching however, Aeric could think of no solution that would spare him being on the wrong end of a gun. Maybe they have some sort of shift change, that could make for a good opportunity. Having found a good vantage point, he decided to scope things out for another couple hours, taking in every detail carefully. He got a good idea of what sort of rounds the sentries made, dismayed by how tight they kept things. People came and went at odd intervals, but traffic never seemed too busy. Sometime deep into his stake-out a black, unmarked van pulled up to the gate and was allowed entry without hesitation. Aeric watched as the vehicle rolled lazily across the grounds, coming to park in a large garage which was hastily closed.

More werebeasts, he wagered, burning with anger at the thought. He would have loved to rush in and put an end to this shit, but he was helping no one by getting himself killed. There’s nothing for it. If I try to sneak in, they’ll see me. If I go in like I’m there for the fights, they’ll watch me like a hawk and I won’t be able to get anywhere. With no better idea, he decided his best option was to leave for now and come back in the dead of night. With any luck the guard would at least thin out. It was doubtful, but at least in the darkness he had far less chance of being seen. I’ll just have to wait at Catty’s place until then. Good thing I left the door open… begrudgingly he made his way back, completely unprepared for what would be waiting for him upon arrival.

Things seemed fine at first, the coast clear as usual as he headed back up to the apartment. By a twist of fate he’d showed up just moments after Catty, missing her completely as she found herself locked alone with Carl. He was just out of ear-shot of hearing the door slam, leaving him to casually approach as if chaos did not stir within. Once he reached the door and his hand reached for the handle though, he stopped, his brow knitting in confusion. His heart practically stopped when he realized he heard voices in side. His mind immediately jumped to panic, wondering if it would be a good idea to enter. If Catty had come home early he might be able to swing the idea of her dog simply getting out of the house. To have him waltz in during the event however… well there was no fucking way he could explain that.

All thoughts of consequence went out the window when he heard a loud thud near the door though, and the followed by the unmistakable shrill of Catty’s voice in the sound of a pained scream. Without hesitation, Aeric burst into the house, finding the scene with a look of surprise, which was quickly replaced by pure, indescribable fury when he realized what was happening. “GET THE FUCK OFF OF HER!” He bellowed, voice seething with anger. He didn’t give Carl the chance to abide by the advice though, rushing in and slamming the flat of his foot right into the greasy mother-fucker’s face. The sudden assault was more than another to knock Carl down, breaking him away from Catty before he had the chance to do any real harm. Aeric’s second instinct was to run to Catty’s side and help her as she was left rasping to reclaim her breath. But he lost himself entirely to his first instinct, which was to beat her ex fucking senseless.

No sooner than Carl had been laid low did Aeric rush in and grab him by the shoulders. He flipped the sorry excuse of a man over like he was nothing, ignoring his dazed, bloody face as he reared his fist back and brought it down with all his strength. He felt bone gave way under his strength, as well as the flesh of his knuckles bruise and split. But none of it felt real. All he saw was the color red; dazzling, blinding. It erased all his other senses. The only thing he could think about was delivering the blows with steady repetition. All the pain that plagued his life over the last several months was delivered ten-fold, erupting out of him and directly into Carl’s face. He was consciously aware that the pitiful human might not survive if he continued his assault, making his problems ten times worse with the faction that planted him. But he didn’t rightly care in that moment. Tears welled in his eyes as everything he was feeling came out, the sorrow and rage over the scenes he witnessed yesterday more than anything. And as Carl crumpled beneath him, Aeric was terrified by how good it felt.

Every muscle was quivering, his fist nearly as bloody as Carl’s face by the time he finally stopped, halting a balled-fist just before driving it back down. Carl was still breathing, albeit it shallowly and with a senseless gurgle. Aeric released his grip, letting his battered victim collapse to the floor before rising on wobbly legs. The reality of everything was sinking in now, leaving him stunned by his brutal feat. Like a hazy memory, Catty’s name came back to him and he was suddenly aware of her presence. He turned to face her, at a complete loss for words. He hadn’t arrived in time to hear that Carl had already revealed his secrets… but that wasn’t his primary concern right now. “A-are you alright?” he asked, still shaking with the adrenaline over what just happened. A thousand things ran through his mind at once, not the least of which was What the fuck am I going to do now? The smart thing would have been to run, bolt out the door and never look back. But locking eyes with Catty kept him grounded, making his legs heavy like lead as he waited to see how she would react to all this. Carl was left to moan and wheeze all the while, a huge problem that threatened to ruin everything.

The edges of her vision began to get fuzzy and dark. Her mouth gulped and strained but try as she might Carl's grip was fierce. She wriggled but was neatly pinned by the thin, boney thigh and shins of her ex. Ex turned raving lunatic murderer. Catty didn't stop trying to struggle even as she began to realize this was it. This was how she was going to die. How long would it be before someone found her? Told her parents? Her friends? Aeric too. Who was going to feed Anubis? The fuzzy darkness crept further and further into her vision, her lungs burned and her struggles slowed. Strangely it seemed to be taking a lifetime, everything moving slowly around her. Distantly she thought she heard a bang, the slam of a door. A deep, resounding shout reverberated through the air, the words indiscernible, muffled as if through a watery tunnel. A tall blur came into view followed by a sudden and swift removal of Carl. Catty's chest heaved as she suddenly sucked in air. Her vision came back straight away, the world moved at its regular pace. She gave a few mighty coughs with shuddering gasps for air in between. What happened?

Catty rolled to her side and the commotion there. A familiar figure pummeling another familiar figure. Still panting softy it took a little for her mind to catch up. A broad back was to her with shining onyx hair. He was fury incarnate, his fist slamming over and over and over into Carl's face. "Aeric?" She questioned quietly as the man treated Carl's face like a tough cut of meat. Slowly she pushed herself up to sit, gingerly touching her neck. Catty couldn't see the reddened bruising but she could certainly feel it. She was beyond grateful Aeric had come to the rescue but...how? Why was he even there? Maybe she had been right, he was stalking her. Finally the sounds of pummeling ceased, the apartment falling quiet. Catty remained sitting, her legs completely unwilling to work, as Aeric rose. She looked up to the man in his imposing height, a train wreck of emotion crashed through her skull. Terror mostly but gratitude, confusion...part of her was even stupidly happy to see Aeric again so soon. Too bad it was like this.

He finally turned as if only just remembering she was there. Her eyes met his as he stammered his question. Catty could only nod a little in response. Eyes drifted to his bloodied knuckles and to Carl who lay wheezing, his face a ruined mess of blood and bone. He had completely lost his mind. Drunk and raving. Wolf man...nonsense. "Anubis..." she said quietly before struggling to her feet, legs as wobbly as a newborn giraffe. As much as he raved about her dog she knew he did something to him. "I...I need to find...Anubis," she said in a squeaking, tight voice. Her vision blurred again as she glanced around. "He hurt him...I...I know it," she said as tears began to slip out of the corners of her eyes. "He-he kept yelling about h-him and y-you. Wolf man...he said wolf man," each passing moment was getting harder and harder to form coherent thought and words. Though one managed to come back in full force as she looked back to Aeric, scrubbing a hand across her eyes. "How...why...are you here? How did you...when did you...." It was a lot to take in all at once. Besides the events at work she was nearly killed then saved by a very unlikely hero.

Before Aeric could be able to formulate a response another figure appeared on scene. Raymond, Catty's downstairs neighbor. His hulking frame filled the door way, an arm braced on the molding above as he surveyed the scene. Hard to see but so close Aeric would be able to note a peculiar scent from the man. Strong with him so close but nearly undetectable otherwise. A strong smell of barnyard, more importantly of cows. Impossible to discern by eye for a glamour encased the minotaur. It might explain Raymond's unreasonably massive frame. He gave a small snort before ducking into the room. "Great..." he said with a huff. Catty stared up at Raymond, surprised he was there but utterly none-the-wiser of what Aeric could deduce about the man. Monster. "You need to go....they're coming." He looked pointedly at Aeric only assuming he would know who 'they' were.

"G-go...but...who's coming? The police? But...but I need to find my dog..." Catty stammered out as she looked between Raymond and Aeric. What the hell was happening? More importantly, where was Anubis? Raymond gave another snorting huff and his gaze fell on Aeric. His expression clearly sympathetic yet also irritated with the lycan. "I think you two have a lot to talk about...but you need to go, now. Out the fire escape. I'll hold them off if I can."

Standing there beneath the weight of Catty’s confused and fear-stricken eyes, Aeric felt as naked as if he’d just shifted. All his time spent hiding the truth from her, and for what? Things had all turned out in the worst way possible. How could he even muster the words to explain to her? Such truths could shatter an unprepared mind, but judging by how terribly bewildering this all had to be to her, it looked like that risk had already been brought to bear. It was particularly wrenching as her first thought was her ‘dog.’ That felt like a blow to the guy to Aeric. What could he even say? “Catty…” he started in a dry voice. Feeling ashamed he had to avert his eyes from her. “There isn’t any…” but he couldn’t say it. The words just refused to come. This was difficult enough that he almost envied Carl and his comatose state right now. Though any hints of envy quickly turned to something else at Catty’s revelation.

“He what?” He blurted, unable to hide the sound of serious astonishment from his voice. Immediately his eyes dropped to the sputtering mess of a man on the floor, the terrible truth sinking in. How the fuck could he know about me? No one had seen him shift, he made damn sure of that. But then… there was a semblance of doubt. Could he really be certain no one saw him shift outside of that cab last week? Or even just the day before when he was chasing the nagual? Aeric thought his surroundings were free of eyes both times… but what if he was wrong? No… this feels bigger than that. But to what end? Before he could contemplate it Caty’s mind had begun putting the pieces together. “Catty, listen…” he tried to interrupt her, realizing the seriousness of their situation. Before things could go any further though, the door flew open and Aeric automatically assumed the worst. His hand dropped to the small of his back, ready to pull the gun he had tucked away, or shift at a moment’s notice. It almost came to that when he first saw Raymond, but then the familiar scent struck his keen nostrils, he hesitated.

But that wasn’t enough to lower his guard. Just like with Eddy, Aeric knew there were a myriad number of supernatural creatures that were in more than good with the opposition. While the Hunters and their benefactors knew the value to having loyal members of their kind, their unlikely partners often helped them out of desperation. You don’t have many other choices in a world of kill or be killed. Yet beyond that even, some creatures were just as twisted and fucked up as the humans who hunted them. Minotaurs had a long history of violence just for the fun of it. But if there were any truth to the legends, none of it seemed to reflect in Raymond. Aeric found himself a little stunned by the unlikely show of good faith. His mind swam with questions, burning to know who this guy was or how he and Carl knew about the things going on here. But the menacing promise was all he needed to hear. If what he said was true, there was no time to discuss it.

“Catty I know where Anubis is,” Aeric said, cutting off her exasperated questioning. He instantly felt guilt for the lie… well not a lie technically, but he needed to get her into motion. “I’ll explain everything on the way. But he’s right, we have to go; now.” He turned to follow the minotaur’s instruction, though he only took a couple of steps before something dawned on him. “Wait!” he said, before hurriedly turning back around. “Catty get your bag!” He didn’t leave her time to argue, hurrying her into the task before he addled brain could distract her out of it. Once she’d done as asked he impatiently took it from her, rushing to the bedroom where he dropped to his knees beside the bed and reached under. In a rush he scooped out the small pile of money there, stuffing it into her tote right before her eyes. He didn’t take the time to explain, by now it was probably just one more oddity in a long string of strange occurrences.

He finished the task with all haste, coming out of the bedroom to pass one last look at Raymond. He tossed one of the stacks, held together by a flimsy rubber band, for the man to catch. “Thanks,” Aeric told him with a nod of appreciation. A thousand dollars wasn’t much when he was potentially risking his life for them, but if he could manage to fend them off or give them the slip, at least it was something to help him along after. Aeric said no more than that, taking Catty’s hand and leading her to the window that would serve as their escape. He felt terrible dragging her along like this, involving her in the chaos of his life. Not to mention the truth of who and what he was still lingered like a heavy, dark cloud. But he couldn’t grant her the gift of clarity, not yet. Not when they were still in such danger.

So despite any protests Aeric guided her down the fire-escape and out into the warm daylight. He didn’t not give them a chance to rest on their laurels once they were safely down on the street, ushering her to keep moving at once. “There’s somewhere we have to go,” he told he truthfully. Raymond was right, they had a lot to talk about, and the most important thing right now was getting some place safe to do it. No place is safe… he realized, but his mind automatically jumped to the one place he felt safest. “Come on it’s this way. We have to keep moving!” He hurried her across the street, ignoring any protests as he demanded they run. He remained hand-in-hand with her all the while, driving them on with reckless abandon until they inevitably tired out and were forced to keep a briskly paced walk. “Don’t stop now,” he told her, hardly giving her time to catch her breath let alone release the flood of questions she was bound to have. “It’s still pretty far.”

It would have been a lot faster to catch a taxi, but somehow things just felt safer on foot. He took a convoluted route, hoping to throw off any pursuers as to their destination, should they potentially follow. It made for an even longer trip, lengthening the uncomfortable silence between them. Awkward as it was, Aeric cherished it while it remained, looking none too forward to the conversation that would follow. But he pressed on, knowing there was no way around it. It grew all the more pressing and real when they finally reached the suburbs and Aeric guided her towards the family home he’d known all his life. As before, he led her down the path through the hedges, shielding the two from sight as the secret trail led passed the wrought-iron fence and into the large, tree-hidden backyard. “This is the place,” he told her, going up to the backdoor. He didn’t bother locking it as the small window was still broken, allowing anyone access even if he had. Luckily, unless someone was dedicated to scale their dangerous fence, few and less knew how to navigate their way through to the back anyway.

Once the door was opened he ushered them both inside. Before either of them could talk however, Aeric did a quick sweep, making absolutely certain they were alone. “We can’t stay here long,” he said, wondering if that wasn’t already too obvious with the way the place was ransacked, “But it’s the safest place I can think of for the time being.” He led her through the living room, where hanging on the wall above the sofa, were the mounted shield and axes he spoke of on their date, proving this to be the home of his childhood. But he brought no attention to that himself, quietly leading her deeper into the house. “Down here,” he told her, coming to stop as a set of stairs leading down into a den. “I think that’s probably the best place to talk about this…”

After they descended and Aeric flipped on the lights, his reasoning soon became obvious. The norse artwork and artifacts his father supposedly collected appeared to be gathered on display here. It would quickly become clear that everything featured one constant theme: Wolves. From vases with crude depictions of the animal, to elegantly crafted blades inlaid with silver images of them, to pieces simply with the Nordic rune for the word ‘Wolf,’ everything seemed to practically worship the beasts. Even the floor served as one, massive, round mural. Yet the most impressive perhaps, was a huge mosaic covering the entire far wall. Aeric’s eyes fell upon the image with a twinge of worry. He’d grown accustomed to seeing the Father of Wolves in his dreams ever since the attack. Seeing the image of his ancestor bound and chained struck him with a new sort of emotion after having lived the scene in his dreams.

Aeric pulled his eyes away from the picture, turning back to face Catty with an uneasy sigh. “So here we are…” he said, unsure of how to begin. Maybe she was already starting to put it together; starting to see the truth in Carl’s words. He decided to start there. “About what Carl said…” he said, tongue feeling thick and nerves electric. He’d never openly revealed his secret to anyone. “About Anubis…” he continued. With another heavy sigh, he decided to just get it over with. “It would be easier just to show you.” He said finally. But perhaps to her surprise his first action was to remove his shirt. He pulled the fabric up over off his muscled chest, revealing it to be fairly accurate to her dream. However, that night was dark and their minds were more than a little clouded. Here in the brighter light she might be able to see reddish-pink scar that ran from below his pecks and across his abdomen; suspiciously like the one she treated her dog for.

Aeric didn’t stop there, moving to kick off his shoes even as his hands came up to undo his belt his belt and jeans. Surely she thought him crazy by this point; dragging her into his weird wolf dungeon just to strip down to nothing in front of her. And ‘nothing’ was not an understatement, as his pants dropped with his boxers to follow. He stood unabashed, fully nude before her. But before she could think anything of it, Aeric disappeared. Standing in his place and surrounded by his discarded articles, was the large black wolf she had come to know and love. His vivid green eyes watched her with intelligence, yet he didn’t dare move, letting her come to terms with it all. His head dropped some, ears drooping as she would have come to realize the truth of everything. He probably should have switched back to a man then, but being so uncertain of her reaction, it almost felt safer to remain a wolf where he could have plausible deniability for remaining silent.

Catty's mind was an incoherent blur of questions. Who was coming? Why was Aeric there? What insane nonsense had Carl been raving about? Where was her fucking dog?! Her mouth moved but only the odd squeak issued in her inability to form a solid thought let alone translate said thought to her mouth. Her head snapped around to Aeric when he said he knew where Anubis was. Her lips hung open a little, her eyes confused and wary. She had no reason not to trust him...but she was beyond confused and distraught. More questions. How would he know where Anubis was? Was he somehow involved with Carl? It wouldn't make sense. Nothing made sense any more. Concern for her beloved pooch spurred her legs forward to follow only to abruptly stop as the command to grab her bag. "Bu...wha..." she mumbled out only to be ushered around to grab it. Still with her workout clothes from the morning and her scrubs in it Aeric was quick to snatch it from her and stomp to her room. Catty peered in as he wriggled himself under her bed only to reappear with a stack of money in hand. Once more her lips moved with only a squeak or two. What the hell was going on?

Raymond caught the stack thrown to him by the wolf. He gave a gruff nod and stuffed it into his pocket. There was no time to argue, they needed to go and he needed to prepare. "Take care of her," he said with a short grunt as Aeric had to bodily pull Catty out of the window to the fire escape. He wasn't entirely clear what was going on but he had a couple of guesses. "Just my luck..." he said with a sigh once he was alone with the bloodied, unconscious remains of Carl. He slammed the door closed and tossed, with ease, anything he could in front of it including the refrigerator. That would delay them for a little while more. He went ahead and dropped the glamour. No different in size save the massive bullhead sitting on broad shoulders. He shook his horns a little and flicked the ring through his septum. Heavy thuds on the door. "Open up!" Of course he wasn't about to. They tried to shoulder the door but Raymond only chuckled. "Keep trying humans."

Catty and Aeric were decently far. Catty simply pulled haphazardly along. Her steps willing enough but sluggish. She could barely process anything as Aeric pulled her along for the mad dash. Anything but the explosion they could hear even from their distance. Catty's feet truly skittered there to crane her neck back to look. No smoke billowed but she somehow just knew it was back at her apartment. Of course they still couldn't stop and they kept moving. Moving, moving, moving. Despite her exercise routine running on a treadmill was a bit easier than a street. Moving, moving, moving. Her legs and lungs burned, her mind still a jarring whirl of confused, jumbled thoughts and questions. Even still she kept on behind Aeric, her fingers white knuckled into his hand. Finally they slowed a little but no stopping. Briskly walking away. Further and further to the city limits. Catty wanted to pour forth her confused questions but it was enough to just keep breathing.

Far, far out, well past the city and into the suburbs. Why didn't they just take her car? Her hips were screaming, her legs like jelly as they continued on and on. Then into a strange grove of shrubs in a subdivision. Massive trees and bushes kept them hidden as they approached a substantially sized home. Dark and foreboding but Aeric marched right for it. Still she obediently followed like a wanderer lost in a chaotic dream. Aeric pulled her right to and in the backdoor. Inside she was met with simply more chaos. Every piece of furniture overturned and tossed everywhere. She had nothing to say as they passed into a living room. Her eyes shot straight to a mounted shield and axes. Nordic. Even with the unwieldy chaos in her mind a memory managed to zing through. They were in Aeric's home. It was a mess! His parents' home? Could this be the ravings of grief? Or something a little worse...his father had died suddenly. A cold shiver raced her body. What on earth had she stumbled into?

Still just a bit further, to a set of dark stairs. The best place to talk about this. Her stomach tied in knots, palms damp with sweat as he led her down the dark stairs. Sudden light blinded her a moment. Just a moment. Her jaw fell open at the displays around her. Wolves. Everywhere. Even things she didn't know were or meant wolf she could only assume between the intricate floor mural and massive mosaic. Aeric hadn't been kidding but he neglected to mention a specific fascination with wolves. Wolves...wolf man. Was this some weird, nordic wolf-based gang? For a moment she had entirely forgotten the sheer absurdity of the past...however long it had been since she had gotten to her apartment.

Her eyes jumped to Aeric as he spoke. Tried to speak anyways. It was the first time she had seen him anything but smooth. He tried several times to speak but hesitated and stopped. "Wolf..." was all she could managed to say back to him as he moved and simply pulled his shirt off. An entirely new set of clamoring thoughts flooded her mind. Her dream had been accurate as hell. Besides panicked confusion a slight, bright, tinge of interest invaded her gaze. Despite all the site was well appreciated. Then her eyes took in the scar. Diagonal across the belly. She had sewn up an injury like that not too long ago. Coincidences were...her brain screeched to a halt as he unbuckled his belt. Was he...yes he was. The pants and boxers were quick to follow. Her arms came up in front of her body protectively. If this was his weirdo idea of foreplay she was anything but willing at the moment. Maybe not entirely as he cast aside the pants and boxers.

Before she could even think or comment Aeric was gone. Instead stood a painfully familiar shaggy black shape. If possible her mouth fell lower, blue eyes doubling in size. "Anubis..." she breathed out. It was impossible. Stupidly bravely or bravely stupid either way Catty edged forward with the tiniest of baby steps. One arm reached as far as she could stretch, entire being on edge to bolt. Slowly, agonizingly, she reached for the dog and her fingers brushed the side of his muzzle, the short hairs tickling her finger tips. Once more her mouth moved without sound as her fingers continued to lightly brushed the side of his muzzle. Wolf man. Catty's legs gave out and she plopped to her knees with a hard thunk. Mouth still agape she stared absently forward, hand dropping to her side, as he mind whirled. It was impossible. Her eyes utterly unfocused as she relived the past two weeks in her mind. Finding the dog, healing him up, the strange behaviors, her door unlocked sometimes, Aeric at the club, Aeric at the fair...Anubis didn't want to go to the fair...because he couldn't. He couldn't meet himself.

Finally her eyes slipped back into focus and she looked into the vibrant, intelligent green eyes. She remembered a similar feeling once. There's no Santa Claus. There was never a dog. A man as a dog. It was impossible but here it was. "It's not..." she managed to squeak out. "It's not...possible..." she reached up again, quicker, with more determination, and buried her fingers in the familiar coat. This was real. "How can...it's not..." Something in her mind snapped. Catty went very still for a moment. Suddenly tears welled in her eyes and every confused thought came pouring out in liquid form. The tears hot and salty. "You're my dog?!" The squeaks gone and replaced with a shrill, shocked fury. "This whole...this whole time?! You've been....my apartment...the club and...no phone...music preference..." The pieces were snapping together wildly preventing anything more than a word at a time from coming out. She stopped suddenly again, her right eye gave a small twitch. Crazy sex dream. "Dream...it wasn't a dream was it? We fuckin..." Literally. Her fingers gripped his fur a little tightly and, without considering this was actually a wolf, gave him a firm but small shake. "I was dating my fucking dog? Fucking my fucking dog? What the....what the hell! And, and, and, and...what the hell? And Carl...he knew and...forced cheat..." Her fingers released the luxurious black fur, hands dropping back to her sides.

Her head pounded furiously, eyes and limbs aching. "Nope...no...too crazy...nope..." Slowly she tilted to one hip and flopped down onto her back as she had when returning from the fair. An arm flung over her eyes as she laid there, willing everything to just stop. "I reject this reality..." she groaned. The cool floor helped ease the headache somewhat even as her mind still reeled. After a few moments of deep breathing she raised her arm off her eyes. Still in the wolf basement. Still with the wolf man. "OK...let's pretend this is real before my crazy brain melts. Can you turn back into a man and tell me...what...the...fuck?" It felt real, her aches were real, the floor cold. Everything she believed in, science, told her this had to be real. Science also said fairy tale creatures weren't real either. Bully for science.

It was a long painful moment of waiting while Aeric allowed Catty to accept the reality of things. Her initial reaction was unexpected to say the least. He sat perfectly still, allowing her hand to brush across his bristly muzzle while his deep green eyes continued to appraise her. Catty dropping to the floor was a more anticipated event, but nothing could prevent the feeling of unease when he saw the clarity of recognition return to her eyes. It seemed she was still having trouble accepting it though, Not that he could blame her. To someone who didn’t know about the secret world hidden all around them, this sort of thing was lunacy. Struggling with it, Aeric fought a wince while she latched onto his coat as though to reaffirm he was truly there. And then came the tears…

Aeric couldn’t remember having ever felt as guilty as he did now as the jumble of realizations came pouring out of Catty’s mouth. It was especially true when she came to the ultimate realization that her ‘dream’ had not in fact, been a dream. Well that certainly wasn’t going to help his case. As if it wasn’t weird enough that he’d secretly been posing as her dog, now she’d really think he was a creep. Just lump me in with Kevin Spacey and the rest of them… He chastised himself whilst he continued to weather her fury and emotion. Aeric wasn’t sure what would happen when she finally released him and sat back. He didn’t put it past her to get up and leave. It’s probably what he would have done in her shoes. Just walk out that door and run away from this whole crazy mess. Instead, she seemed to collapse under the weight of it all, dropping to the ground.

Can’t blame you… Aeric thought silently whilst he watched her lay there, rejecting it all. But his attentions were quickly snatched by what he saw. Images of his dream; his incarnation of Skoll chasing Sol, were practically re-enacted right before his very eyes. The way Catty had fallen back left the depiction of the sun as a fiery halo around her head. Aeric’s eyes followed her beautiful visage to the image of the massive black wolf, jowls spread wide waiting to swallow her whole. Just a coincidence… He quickly had to reaffirm to himself. The idea of prophetic dreams were about as hard for him to accept as this whole situation was for Catty. Though, a pang of doubt and worry struck him as he looked to the other wolf; Skoll’s sister Hati. Black and white… Just like me and…. Freja! His sister’s plight came rushing back to mind, causing him to ignore the continuing similarities between his life and the legend of his ancestors. But dire as his sister’s situation was, things had to be solved between Catty and him first.

And it seemed Catty was eager for the same as she demanded he change back and explain things. He wasted no time in granting her wish, the form of Aeric appearing so instantaneously that ‘magic’ was the only word to describe it. He stood over her, looking upon her with the same doleful eyes as the wolf just moment’s before. “It…” he started, appearing to struggle with words as much as she. “It’s a long story,” he managed to breathe after a moment. “But the gist of things is… I’m not really a web designer.” Humor, Aeric? Now? “I’m a… well there’s lots of words for what I am. “ He gave himself a swift quick for the terrible start, seeming to realize that it must have been twice as ridiculous considering he was still perfectly naked before her eyes. He wasn’t particularly abashed of nudity; his family may as well have been nudists what with all the time they spent shifting around one another. But something about the situation made him feel unusually embarrassed. So he grabbed for his clothes, shuffling back into his garments. Once he had his pants back on at least, he decided to just spit it out already.

“You probably know us most commonly as werewolves,” he said, pausing only to pull his shirt back on over his chiseled torso. “Look… I know this is a lot to take in and all, but I just want you to know I never intended for things to go this far. In fact I never intended for any of this to happen in the first place. That night you found ‘Anubis’ two weeks ago? Well, I was out there because it was the night of the New Moon.” He knew she wouldn’t understand the reasoning for that, but he didn’t have time to explain the intricacies of werewolf life right now so he kept things brief. “The cliffs above that highway are where my pack… my family has gathered for generations. But on that night we weren’t the only ones on those cliffs. A group of men ambushed and attacked us. That’s how I lost my father… and everyone else I’ve ever loved.” He was unable to keep the bitter tone out of his voice. Talking about this was bringing up a well of emotion, but Aeric’s eyes hardened, refusing to let it overtake him. “I… I tried to fight back… to save my family. But I failed. Their leader cut me down with a sword and threw me from the clifftops. I passed out after that, only to wake up in your apartment.”

Aeric leased a breath, feeling like a tremendous weight had been lifted from his shoulder now that she knew the general truth of his appearance in her life. “I didn’t plan to deceive you like this… I didn’t even plan to stay. My first thoughts were how the hell I was going to get out of your apartment. I was so beat up that I wasn’t even able to shift back into a man again. So I decided to stay until then. When I finally healed enough that I could, I came back here to my house only to find it like this. I knew I shouldn’t have gone back to your place after that. I knew it would be dangerous. But…” he trailed off, reluctant to admit his moments of weakness. “I didn’t know what else to do,” he finally said. “I don’t expect you to understand the gravity of this… but there’s a whole world full of things out there that you can’t even imagine Catty. For our own safety, we’ve remained on the edge of history, keeping in the shadows and passing into myth and legend. But there are those who know the truth, and in their prejudice, hunt us down and destroy us. The men who decimated my pack were one such group of people. These Hunters find, enslave, and kill us without mercy. I was afraid that out there on my own, it would only be a matter of time before they found me again.”

He gave her a moment to digest all that before continuing further, wanting to get everything out that he could in the short time they had to discuss these things. “But stuck there in your apartment every day… under the weight of all these terrible things and the secret I was keeping from you… well I just started to go a little crazy. I had to get away from it all. So that night you went to the club, I decided to follow you. I know it was a pretty fucked up thing to do. But believe me… I didn’t expect us to actually hit it off or anything. I was just trying to have some fun. But I saw the way you looked at me, and I liked it… liked you. Things just happened from there.” With a shaky breath, he looked her in the eyes, still concerned over how she would handle all of this information. Yet, he couldn’t even afford her the opportunity to take it all in. Now, there were things he needed to question. “Listen, Catty… I know I’ve given you more than enough to consider right now… but there’s something I need to know. I always thought that what happened between us was a coincidence; that by some manner of luck I fell to that road and was fortunate enough to be found by you. But now… I’m not so sure. You said that Carl told you I was a wolf man… but how the hell could he know that? I never even heard of that piece of shit until after we met, and I don’t think he could have witnessed anything to tell him otherwise. I know it’s probably hard to remember with everything going on… but I need you to tell me everything Carl said. It might save not only our lives, but the life of my sister as well.” But he didn't explain Freja yet. His plans to help his sister were far from canceled, though. As soon as this conversation was settled, it would again be his first priority.

Catty remained laying back on the floor, the cool tile soothing to her throbbing head. He was quick to fulfill her demand to change back. She gave a soft groan as the man reappeared making her head give a hard pound. Part of her had been hoping it wouldn't happen and she just had feinted or something. Blue eyes stared up at Aeric. A very, very naked Aeric. She wanted to appreciate the sight. Well, no, she did appreciate it. The only good thing to happen with all the insanity. She could no sooner have stopped the sunrise than glanced a couple times up and down. He struggled to start again but she was only barely listening. He wasn't a web designer. That snapped her brain right back and she narrowed her eyes at him. Yeah, no shit. He seemed to suddenly remember he was nude and grabbed up his clothes to pull them back on. Well fit black shirt and jeans. Only then did Catty even realize he had worn that same outfit to the club and to the park.

Slowly she pushed herself to sit up as he tried to explain. Werewolves. Well that much she understood. It made absolutely no sense and yet, somehow, also made sense at the same time. None of this could possibly be real. Myths, legends, fantasy stories weren't real. She rubbed her temples as she listened to him. No, this was crazy, how could it be real? Though as he spoke of the ambush and loss of his father a bolt of sympathy struck her. He had admitted the loss of his father but...if this was real and that was the truth...it was terrible. Her brows were knitted as she listened and tried to absorb the information. So he and his family were attacked and...she found him. Found him as a wolf. Wounded, close to dying. It had been weirdly coincidental. Catty tucked up her knees to her chest as she stayed quiet and listened. She didn't interrupt him even if she struggled to comprehend and accept everything he was telling her. Some insane secret war among humans a supernatural creatures. How could this have been hidden for so long?

Catty finally looked back up at him as he spoke of his time in her apartment. Stuck, going stir crazy. It was safe for him to hide for a while...posing as her dog! Her teeth clenched some as she thought about the dog hanging about her apartment. He had seemed so smart and this was exactly why. Her blood heated as she thought about taking care of what she had thought was just a dog. A wonderful, handsome dog but still, just a dog. No, just just a dog. The heat suddenly dissipated as he spoke of going to the club and meeting her. Really meeting her. Suddenly her throat felt tight. She had liked him too. Everything seemed to perfect with him. Well now she understood why it seemed so perfect. He knew far more about her, after living in her apartment for a week, than she ever knew about him. And the...not dream. The real sex. God why...how could it be better and yet worse to know what they had gotten up to that night? All the agony thinking it was just a dream while on their date.

Before she could even question him about any of that he had his own questions. Catty's head jerked back some as he asked about Carl. What he had said to her. For a while she just stared at Aeric, her eyebrows pulled into a confused frown. "He...he...he was drunk! Drunk and crazy...he couldn't..." she stopped herself. Was that the craziest part of all this? That Carl knew something about this apparent secret world? "I...well he said...I...don't know something about the government and...and that they forced him to..." She stopped again and blinked. "Cheat...forced him to cheat..." Could that even be real? "I don't...know why but...what else....a-a prize? Wanted the wolf dead...so...you...I guess. A-and...they said..." She notably cringed and shook her head. "That part doesn't matter. It was...set up...? I guess? I don't know....he was drunk and raving. I was supposed to just...take care of you...?" Catty gave a low groan and rubbed her hands over her face before burying both into her knees. "None of this makes sense. Just wanted...to help a dog..."

Catty sat there for a moment, trying to digest everything. A secret war. Carl cheated because he was forced to for...some reason. Aeric was a werewolf. His whole family all wolves. "So...what now? You have to kill me? Knowing this...crazy nonsense?" Finally Catty picked up her head and looked at Aeric. It was almost too much to digest, too much to believe. Why couldn't he just be a web designer and not some crazy, bad romance novel come to life? "I just...do you have any idea how crazy this all is? I mean, maybe normal for you but...Ok...ok so...so what now then? These...government hunters are looking for you?" Her head jerked back as she remembered Raymond at her apartment and the explosion. "So...so Raymond's one of you too? A...werewolf?" Holy shit she had been living near and playing poker with one for a couple years? "I hope he's ok...he said there were...people coming. The government hunters...I don't think....I'm just gonna...go...yeah..." Slowly Catty pushed herself to her feet. "I mean...good luck and all but...this is just too crazy for me. I just wanna be a vet..."

All things considered, Aeric thought Catty was taking it all pretty well. Well, as well as could be expected anyway. But she didn’t have a complete break down or at the very least smack him like most women probably would have done. He wouldn’t have blamed her for it if she did. Honesty, he thought it might still be coming when she just stared at him, seemingly at a loss of words. It took some gall to demand information from her when he just shook the foundations of everything she thought to be true; if she didn’t hit him for anything else than that was surely a justified reason. But it seemed the craziness of it all would stay her hand, as well as her tongue. Aeric tried to remain patient while she struggled to recall. He felt guilty even forcing her to remember; judging by the murderous look in Carl’s eye that had to be one hell of a traumatic experience for her. In a way, maybe these revelations were a good thing. At least it distracted her from the fact she was nearly murdered by her ex-boyfriend.

The details he got from her were jumbled at best. But the scattered bits of it began to paint a yet cloudy picture. Government… forced to cheat… set up for her to take care of him… Aeric had to conclude with Catty’s analysis: None of this made sense. Set up? I was as good as dead, what could they possibly have to gain by planting me in someone’s house? What the hell is going on? His emerald eyes fell upon Catty, full of confusion and uncertainty. Could it have something to do with her? But no, that didn’t make any sense either. What would they want with some fresh-faced veterinarian girl? As far as he could tell she was all human, and aside from a great personality and being dynamite in bed, as ordinary as the rest of them. Maybe Carl really was just drunk and raving. Maybe he really had spotted Aeric shifting and just came up with the rest. Fat chance, he told himself at the thought, there’s another piece to this puzzle somewhere.

His thoughts were interrupted as Catty addressed him, wondering what happened now. Fuck, if only I knew. But he never expected her to jump to the conclusion she did. Aeric was taken aback, surprisingly hurt that she would even consider such a course. “What? Of course not!” he retorted, looking at her seriously. “I would never hurt you, Catty. Besides, what purpose would that serve? Even if you told someone about this, they wouldn’t believe you. Did you believe Carl?” Well, it was a bad example if the scent of alcohol Aeric picked up on while beating his face to a bloody pulp was anything to go by. Aeric sighed, feeling as equally exhausted having to reveal the secret as Catty was over hearing it. “Believe me… I know how crazy it sounds. Every day of my life has been spent pretending none of this is real; that I’m as ignorant as the rest of the world. Even explaining it to someone makes me sound like I’m insane… But it’s as real as that night we spent together.” Ok probably not the best way to bring up the sex, he chastised himself, not sure I want her to relate it with the rest of this craziness… Not that there was much of a way around that now. Their entire, budding relationship was seeped in crazy.

“I have to assume so,” Aeric admitted as she brought up the hunters. “If what Carl and your neighbor said are anything to go by anyway.” Her mind seemed to latch onto the man of mention, apparently eager to avoid the most dangerous topic of all. Aeric shifted a little under her gaze at the query. “Well…. No. He’s not a werewolf. He’s a…” he stopped himself before he letting it slip. She already had too much to deal with, and while he made it plain there were more than just werewolves out there, he didn’t think she was truly ready for the weight of just how much was out there. “Well he’s not a werewolf anyway, let’s just leave it at that.” But then it came back to the hunters, and Aeric could not blame Catty one bit for deciding to check out as they came full circle. Yet he watched her, a knowing look in his eye as she pushed back to her feet. “Go?” he repeated, sounding incredulous. “Catty, where are you going to go? You heard that explosion the same as me. Do you honestly believe it came from anywhere but your apartment? There’s nowhere to go. Look, I don’t know if your boyfriend was right about this being some kind of set-up, but if it is, these government guys aren’t about to let you go anywhere even if you could. If they’re looking for me, they’re looking for you too. What are you going to do? Go back to your little animal hospital? They’ll find you there Catty! They’re probably on their way right now. It seems to me like our best chance is to stick together.”

Aeric realized his words were sounded a little sharp, maybe even like he was annoyed. He stepped back at the realization, hanging his head somewhat. None of this was her fault, and she couldn’t be blamed. But the longer they waited around here the higher the chances the men searching for them would break the door down. They simply didn’t have the kind of time she needed to accept all of this. And neither did Freja for that matter; if she was even still alive to begin with. “Catty…” Aeric started slowly, a sorrowful note in his voice, “I’m so very sorry that you got involved in all of this. I never intended for any of this to happen. But it did, and I can’t change that. I can only go forward from here. But listen… These men… they will kill you for knowing these things. And that’s if they don’t already have something worse in mind for you; which if our friend Carl is to be believed, they just might. You don’t even know the sort of things these guys are capable of. I’ve seen this shit with my own eyes. Just yesterday I found out my sister is still alive. But who can say for how long? They’ve got her chained up in some underground facility, forced to fight other werebeasts like a goddamn dog fighting ring! I watched my sister practically get ripped to pieces by a fucking bear yesterday; to be honest I don’t even know if she is alive anymore. Last I saw was her battered body being dragged out of the ring while all the rich assholes betting against her cheered over it.”

Aeric abruptly cut himself off, fighting not to lose himself further to the emotion that came welling up only to explode out on her. It was the last thing they needed right now. And honestly, why would she even care about his problems after he’d spent the last two weeks deceiving her? “I have to help her,” he said flatly, gaze still averted. “If she’s still alive…. I just have to. And I know I have no right to ask this of you… but if you really want to be a vet maybe you can help her too. We may not actually be animals, but we… We’re not really human either.” Aeric finally forced himself to look into her soft blue eyes once again, doing nothing to hide all of the hopelessness that had taken over his own. “But if you want to walk out that door, I’m not going to stop you. You have to live your life, and do what you think is right. But for me, that’s getting Freja the fuck out of that hell hole. And I can’t wait any longer do it. I’m sorry.”

Aeric walked right passed Catty, afraid to linger or say any more for fear of how his own feelings might be affected by her choice. Whatever other chaos was taking over, there was no denying he’d grown to care for her. But that was exactly why he couldn’t force these things on her. He had to leave her with these things, to arrive at whatever she thought was best. Still, he feared what conclusion she might come to. But he tried not to linger on it, fighting the urge to look back even as he ascended the stairs and dug his cellphone out of his pocket. After the events at her apartment, things had changed. He couldn’t take the chance of it getting back to the senator and his cronies. If they were half as careful as they appeared, it would only be a matter of time before it put them on even higher alert. Catty aside, there was only one other person who could help him now.

“Eddy it’s me… I need your help.” And those were the last words she would have heard before Aeric was out of earshot, returning upstairs where the cell signal would remain strong enough to explain the situation to Eddy in full. He lingered in the living room even until and after their plan of action was decided, his back kept to the stairs from which Catty would have to emerge and make her decision. But whatever her choice, to leave by the door or stand by his side, he tried telling himself he would look back on it with no regrets.

Well she wouldn't be killed for this sudden knowledge. The shock and appalled tone of his voice set a little knot of guilt to her guts. Aeric didn't even need to say it, she knew he wouldn't harm her. Hadn't he chased Carl off of her twice now? One of the times quite literally saving her life. Despite all his insane screams of 'mine' he had seemed very bent on ending her then and there. Catty rubbed her throat a little, marks still present and tender to the touch. She watched Aeric as he tried to make sense of it. At least he knew about this secret monster world but the incident with Carl. Even still she was trying to recall what he was spewing in his drunken insanity. Mostly it was a jumbled mess of memory, nearly blacking out didn't help either. Still she wanted no part in this craziness. Just wanted to go home and sleep and see if this was all just a very weird dream. Maybe all of it way. Of course Aeric was quick to denounce the idea. Little animal hospital. That pricked a nerve a little only to simmer back down as he spoke of these government people. Her lips pressed to a thin line. Neither of them seemed to understand just who these government guys were. If what he said was true then where could she actually go?

Catty lifted her eyes to Aeric as he halted in his berating of her plans to leave. His tone was harsh, his eyes seemed so lost. Her mind told her this was all crazy and she needed to get as far from the insanity as possible. Yet that look and that sorrowful tone plucked at her heartstrings like a masterful harpist. The tune only plucking more as he spoke of his sister. Possibly the last family member alive. Instantly she wondered how she might feel if her parents died to violently and suddenly, what she would do if her brother was in the same spot. Catty rubbed her arm, a little shame seeping into her as her eyes fell to the floor. She said nothing as he brushed past her, leaving a short waft of scent in his wake before heading up the stairs. She didn't turn even as he spoke again, though not to her. Then she was simply left alone with her thoughts.

This wasn't her world. It wasn't supposed to be. A mysterious realm abutting her own that she had simply stumbled across. More like nearly ran over. Yet that one decision, to help a wounded animal, seemed to have been a turning point. She had no reason to disbelieve Aeric. No where she knew was safe. Hell, if it was the government, absolutely no where was safe. Costa Rica maybe but she had barely enough money to buy groceries let alone a ticket to Costa Rica. Catty huffed a sigh as she stared at the wolf tile on the floor. Slowly her eyes drifted up and around, able to take her time to examine the plethora of wolf paraphernalia. His family certainly was prideful of their kind. Catty managed to move her legs forward to have a closer look at some of the things but kept her hands to herself. Couldn't go to her parent's home. Such a beautifully intricate dagger. Couldn't go to her brother, any family really. A very odd vase with runes on it that likely meant wolf. Even the clinic wouldn't be safe. She made her way to the massive mural that spanned an entire wall. The government would be able to find her anywhere. She broke her 'no touch' rule and let her little fingers trace along the intricate tiling on the wall. It was beautiful and terrible at the same time.

"I don't know what to do," she said quietly to the wolf. She knew next to nothing about norse mythology. A massive wolf bound and chained. Aeric's sister. She imagined a wolf that looked like him, like 'Anubis,' bound in such a way and pushed into an arena. Blood and fur flying. The wolf wounded once again, a great gash across his belly. Catty leaned forward and rested her forehead against the mosaic. She had been so quick, so eager to help that wolf. The wolf who had lived with her...the wolf she had went on a date with. "Couldn't just be a web designer..." She said with a long, quiet sigh. Catty had really liked Aeric, had been so blissfully happy. This was just unfair. With the quiet enveloping her she more clearly remembered the last couple of weeks. Two weeks of lies. Mostly lies...just the living arrangements, jobs, an entire secret world of crazy. Even still did that negate any sort of feelings? He said he liked her. Enough to stay by, to juggle so much to come see her as a man. A sudden jolt raced across her, a bolt of realization. Without hesitation Catty turned and headed up the stairs. Her brain possessing a sudden clarity despite all of what had transpired.

She got up the stairs quietly and found a broad back to her. He wasn't on the phone any more. Just standing there. Her stomach in knots she approached Aeric from behind and stopped a couple paces away. Just out of reach. "Aeric I..." she began but her tongue suddenly felt twice as big. How to put it into words? She took a deep breath to steady herself, arms folded almost defensively against her chest. "I can't...imagine how hard this is for you too...I know you...didn't mean for all of this to happen. I really wish..." She stopped again and blinked a moment. Honestly, did she even wish none of it happened? The recent bits yes but before Carl came in staggering drunk and destroyed the perfect illusion. "Wish I...could have met you another way...but this is where we are and...and you're right. There is no where to go. I mean it is the government and...you know I never really thanked you for getting Carl off me and...I guess what I'm trying to say is...I'm...sorry. This is all just...really, really, ah, shocking to put it mildly. Really shocking. I'll....do what I can to help. I mean...hell I'm just a human but..." Words she never thought she would hear herself utter.

With Eddy’s help reluctantly secured, Aeric felt a bubble of anticipation rising. Their plan wasn’t very solid: After a little more undercover betting the Nagual would create some sort of distraction that would afford Aeric an opportunity to sneak away and find his sister. The longer he thought about it, the more it sounded like suicide honestly. The distraction couldn’t account for whatever security he would find after, and he still couldn’t be sure exactly where the Freja and the other prisoners were kept. This isn’t the time for doubts, he reaffirmed himself. Steering away from his misgivings, another thought came to him. In the worst case scenario, there are a lot of influential people that visit that place. Not to mention the senator himself… It was a dark train of thought, but Aeric was not above taking a hostage if it meant keeping him alive or seeing his demands met. They’re all sick bastards, besides, he told himself, quashing any moral dilemmas he might have if it came to that. The sort of men who would endorse the suffering and slaughter of his kind were better off dead as far as he was concerned.

Thinking on such misery, Aeric’s thoughts couldn’t help but wander to Freja. He could only imagine what sort of tortures she was going through even now. Between his sister’s plight and everything coming to a head with Catty and the Hunters, Aeric was feeling more than a little heartsick. Why did everything have to turn out so wrong? He wondered, gazing out of the large bay window that overlooked the backyard. The late afternoon sun broke through the canopy of trees like golden fingers, making everything seem to calm and peaceful despite the brewing chaos. It was almost too easy to imagine none of this terrible shit had even happened; that at any moment a member of his pack would come padding through the hedges, their fur a glossy-sheen in the light of Sol. Just picturing it brought a rush of memories back to him. How many happy moments had his family shared here…

One such recollection came to him as easily as though it were a scene played out before him. It must have been over 20 years ago now, but Aeric could remember chasing after Freja in the yard as though it were yesterday. They were still pups back then, no older than six or seven. Aeric had a hard time believing he was ever so small; a bundle of black fluff that ran like the wind but was nothing compared to the white blur he chased. Freja had always been faster, as though the very wind guided her paws. Blue eyes burning with determination and tongue lolling, she led Aeric on more than a fair few hopeless chases. The little black wolf had next to no chance catching his sister, but it wasn’t any fun if you never got to wrestle. So Freja would often slow down just to let him pounce, or to surprise him with a quick rebound, leaving Aeric to take the role of prey. She always managed to catch him in that event, after which the two would be engaged in a fluffy mortal combat; the snarls and growls of which seemed far more menacing than the sight. After coming to a stalemate, the two would break away and the chase would be on once more.

It felt like they’d been at it for hours on the day he recalled, and as neither was ever keen to admit defeat to the other, it felt like no end was in sight. Aeric forgot how many times they’d clashed; tumbling and rolling through the tickling grass. As usual, Freja was making a mockery of him as she ran around the perimeter of the yard, teasing Aeric with yips as his four little paws just couldn’t seem to carry him fast enough to catch her. But, these contests had gone on long enough to know his opponent. Freja was a stickler for the course; keeping close to the fence and hedges that shaped their yard. Aeric however, wasn’t above taking a short cut and cutting sharp whilst she went wide at every corner. Freja was fast enough that most times he barely missed a nip at her flank, but this time he was quick enough for a collision. Freja yelped and snarled as she felt her brother’s weight topple her, sending them squirming across the ground. She tried to break free and bolt, but whereas Freja was lithe and quick, Aeric had more stock and strength. He managed to pin his sister down and thus began the dance of their dangerous maws snapping at one another yet never doing any damage.

“Aeric! Freja!” The voice of their mother rang out like a clear, and soothing bell. The two wolf cubs growled the last of their threats before wiggling apart and racing each other to the door of the house. They were all grumbles as they ran neck and neck, only for Freja to take the lead, shooting through the door and past her mother’s legs while Aeric was left to eat her dust. Bitter over the loss, he bolted right around their mother as well, and just like that, their furious contest had come in from outside. Their mother scowled, watching the display, as three more young wolves suddenly bounded in to join them. One of their siblings, with fierce green eyes and a thick gray coat, was fairly bigger than the rest. As he broke into the fray, the rest scattered, sending sounding chaotic yips in every direction.

“That’s enough!” boomed another voice, their father this time. The command was enough for most of the pups to quit their squabbles. But the growls of Aeric and Freja’s struggle remained. Aeric had his sister pinned once again, thwarting her every effort to let her up. “Aeric!” His father commanded, a thick pronunciation on the name, “Settle now!” His friends had always poked fun at the way his parents enunciated his name. ‘Why does your dad say your name funny? EEEEERIC!” They’d crow, taunting him. Aeric had tried explaining that was the proper way of saying it at first, but it wasn’t long before he was ‘Aeric’ to his parents, and ‘Eric’ to everyone else. Regardless of what his name sounded like that, he knew that an order from the alpha was not to be refused. At his father’s behest, Freja was allowed the squirm free. The two were quick to shift back into their human forms as soon as the battle was done, completely unashamed or phased by their profile.

“I beat you!” Aeric declared triumphantly, grinning at his sister.

“Nuh-uh! I got to the house first!”

“Doesn’t matter that you got there first you still lost the fight!”

“It’s only because you’re too fat and heavy to push off of me!”

Aeric didn’t like that. An instant later, they were fighting again. No fur or fangs to aid them now. There was only fists, nails, and teeth. And neither of them were above using any of them. Despite the human appearance they still growled and snapped like wolves, as though they were no more than feral children. The fight continued until their father broke it up, shouting with irritation while the rest of their litter barked and cheered like entertained spectators.

“You two…” their mother sighed, watching as they were pried apart. “More wolf than man.”.

“Well they were born of it,” their father commented, sounding as amused and proud as he was agitated. But Aeric knew their father wasn’t just talking about the blood that ran through their veins.

~

Aeric knew Catty was there even before she spoke. His ears were better than any human’s; he heard her footsteps the moment she approached. He could even smell her sweet perfume as she lingered. He wanted greatly to turn around and face her, but he remained uncertain and somewhat fearful of her decision. When she finally spoke only to stop however, he gave her his attention, turning to appraise her and hear what she had to say. If only we had, he thought of the circumstances of their meeting. Any other way, any other time… this could have been something great. Now he wasn’t even sure if there was any chance for things between them. There was a little spark of hope when Catty said she would help however she could, but still. How did you move forward from this kind of thing? He wasn’t even sure what to say next, let alone how to work this out to a favorable conclusion.

“You don’t have to apologize for anything,” he said, deciding to start there. “Nor do you owe me any kind of thanks. I’m the one who should be grateful. You saved my life that night… and your life has been uprooted because of that. I don’t… I can’t even…” Apparently, he wasn’t very good in these situations. Not that he’d ever had a situation quite like this as a reference point. He sighed, not even sure of what he was trying to say. “If it’s any consolation, I still feel the same way about you.” He didn’t know if that was any kind of comforting. It could just as easily be disconcerting; it wasn’t like he could expect her to see him in that light anymore. But this also wasn’t the time to delve into that. “Maybe we can talk about that after this is all said and done… but we’ve got bigger things to think about right now.”

Aeric stepped away, going to the couch where he’d set her bag down. “Thank you, Catty… not only for offering to help Freja, but for everything you’ve done for me. Yet, I need you to understand… this is going to be dangerous. What I’m planning could quite easily get us killed or worse.” He retrieved the bag and walked over to her, looking her in the eye. “I have a friend on his way to bring me to the place where Freja is held. We’re going to pretend like we’re there for the fights. We’ve been there once already so they should remember us and not give us too much trouble. If you’re coming along I doubt they’ll think twice about a beautiful lady on my arm either. Once in, we’re going to find an opportunity for a distraction and I’m going to break away, find Freja if she’s alive, and get the hell out of there to somewhere safe where you can see to her wounds. Until then all you have to do is stay in character and act natural…”

He let her consider his plan for a moment, then handed Catty her bag back. “We’ll have to use some of this money for placing bets,” he explained of the small mound of cash he’d stuffed inside, “But whatever’s left after this is yours. I know it isn’t much of compensation after everything that’s happened and all that I’m asking of you now… But it’s enough to start new or at least keep your head above water if we make it out of this.” Taking a breath, Aeric stepped back, appraising his with ever-lingering uncertainty. “So knowing all that… it’s your last chance to back out. Eddy will be here soon… and I should probably warn you, he’s an acquired taste at best…”

Perhaps new territory for the both of them. Aeric seemed just as uncertain as she felt. Catty wasn't even sure she wanted to be part of this secret world but, well, she already was. One hell of a stumble into the unknown. Even if she, unknowingly, saved his life first she felt the thanks necessary and just shrugged a little as he tried to push it away. His attempt with a consolation prize brought a tiny, almost awkward grin to her lips. Still reeling from everything she wasn't entirely certain what to say about that. She wanted to say she didn't harbor any ill will towards him, after all it wasn't his fault she felt the need to rescue every animal she saw. Even still she needed a little time to sort that part out in her mind and based on his hasty preparations with this Eddy character it likely wasn't a good time. "Oh you bet we're going to have a talk about this," she said with an almost dark but quiet laugh. When there was more time of course. "I have a few choice words for you."

She watched as he went and fetched her gym bag. Her eyebrows rose as he spoke of the potential dangers of what he was planning. She didn't even need to ask exactly what those plans were. Catty nodded slowly as he explained the barest skeleton of a plan. Go there pretending to be gross rich people betting on animal fights and try and sneak his sister out. His quick little compliment brought a strange look to Catty's face. For a moment her eyes narrowed. What a moment to toss that out there. Even still she couldn't stop a grin even as she tried making the look more of a grimace. The light flush that took over her cheeks was sign enough she wasn't entirely displeased with it though. The plan itself was too sparse for her liking. Of course she would mostly just be there to tend to his sister when and if they escaped. This was utterly crazy. Barely an hour into knowing about werewolves actually being real and suddenly she was taking part in some looney Ocean's 11 scheme. "Act natural...sure...easy. Just a normal human girl hanging on the arm of a werewolf at an underground fighting ring. Natural."

Aeric handed her gym bag back over and Catty slung it over her shoulder. Her eyebrows raised as he mentioned the money in there. She cringed a little as his own uncertainty seeped into her. Start over or try and stay afloat. Fat chance if the government might be coming. He gave her one more chance to back out of it all. Just get the hell out and don't look back. Inwardly Catty sighed. Part of her wanted to. Just go off and pretend none of this was real. Drink enough to convince herself it was all a crazy dream. She noticeably winced at that thought. Apparently she had a talent for drinking enough to assume reality was just dreams. This wasn't the time to think about it. Catty took a long breath, rolling her eyes up to the ceiling for a moment. Her stomach twisted and gurgled in worry. Anything could happen and neither of them seemed to know exactly why the government guys might be after her. Hell they didn't. Even know which one of them they were actually after.

"Maybe I should just go," she said with a heaved sigh before lowering her eyes back down to him a moment. Just a moment before looking down at her tank top and shorts, plucking at the thin material. "I'm not really dressed for the occasion." After a brief pause she gave a short laugh. "I said I'd do it, even if it seems like the much stupider option...especially since my traveling trauma kit was just blown up...I hope your friend knows somewhere with medical supplies to take your sister." That was assuming they even managed to get to his sister and get her out. "If I were you, mister Big Bad Wolf, I'd be more concerned about me re-acquiring a taste for you," her partial smirk belying she was only partially serious about that. She wanted to still like him and forgive everything that happened but part of her was still more than just a little upset with the whole situation. One good thing had come out of all of it though. Reeling and irritated over everything that had happened loosened her up a significant amount. Mentally Catty patted herself on the back for managing to overcome the goofy, awkwardness she hadn't been able to shake around him before. Finding out that the guy you were sort of dating was a werewolf was one hell of an ice breaker.

"So what sort of creature is your friend Eddy?" She asked while they waited for him to arrive. One hell of a "casual" conversation. "Werewolf or...were...ah...what else? Bear? Werebear. And...Raymond too...God I hope he's ok." It was possible he got out before the explosion. Possible.

Aeric was surprised to find Catty relaxing into things with such adaptability. Whereas before she seemed an awkward mess, she was already teasing him about things now. He couldn’t help the smile that spread upon seeing her grin, though inwardly he expected they had a ways to go before things were back to 100%. Can’t wait to hear what those might be… he thought as she threatened him with words to come. But if how quickly she was willing to not only accept all this, but help him and his sister was anything to go by, he had a feeling the two of them could turn out alright. It filled him with a little hope, something he’d found in very short supply lately. But of course, there was still a daunting challenge ahead of them. They’d have to survive this endeavor before getting a chance at repairing any relationship that might have been.

“You know, not everyone I associate with is inhuman,” Aeric pointed out, though he soon bore and awkward expression. “But… he’s a nagual.” Assuming those words would be foreign to her, he went on to explain. “He turns into a big cat basically… They used to be pretty common in Africa. But thanks to the hunters... well let’s just say a lot of us are a rarer sight than we used to be.” At the mention of her neighbors, Aeric also found himself wondering at the man’s plight. Things seemed grim for their unexpected ally, but there was always a chance he made it out. “I never met Raymond before today so I can’t say for sure… but going off my nose I’d say he was a Minotaur. Only ran into one of them before… But he was a tough son of a bitch so I wouldn’t worry too much about your friend. I’m sure he’s more than capable of handling a little danger.”

Werewolves and naguals aside, a Minotaur might have been a lot for Catty to consider. But he didn’t leave her much time to chew over that implication, as his eyes swept down her scantily covered body with what was rather quite hard to call ‘disapproval.’ “You’re right,” he said. “You can’t go in looking like you’re about to hit the gym. We’re taking too many risks already…” Aeric wondered if it wouldn’t be better to leave Catty behind all together. Why drag her right into the maw of danger after all? But there was always the chance that Freja would need her help there and then… and besides, he was loathe to leave her alone somewhere. Not only was there a chance his pursuers would come along and find her, he would likely be so busy worrying about it happening it would distract him on his mission. “You should change into some of my sister’s clothes,” he said pointedly. “Freja is a little taller than you… but Alva was pretty close to your size. Her room’s upstairs, down the hall and on the left. You might want to grab a couple things, actually. I don’t think it’ll be safe to come back here, and you’re going to want more to shorts and a tank-top to fall back on.”

While Aeric left her to those devices, he had a few last minute things to take care of himself. Firstly he went to his own room, sighing in defeat upon seeing the disarray of things again. He did a little digging around through the mess of overturned trappings and clothing until he found a small duffel bag of his own. Afterwards, he decided to take his own advice. He’d gotten by on casual appearance once already but the less attention they drew, the better. He wasn’t about to go all-out of course, but swapping his clothes for a button-down, dark-blue shirt and a pair of khakis had him looking a little more classy at least. Nothing to be done about his dark-gray sneakers; as a werewolf wasn’t prone to putting on airs very often, but it all coordinated well enough. He stuffed another change of clothes in his bag as well, before heading back to the master bedroom and the ever-visited, loose floorboard. After reaching the safety deposit box, he emptied it for the last time, gathering the other half of the many and stuffing it down beneath his clothes. I’ll keep just enough to get pay and pay Eddy as agreed, he decided. If Freja is alive, the rest of this is belongs to her. He stuffed the pistol away in the bag too, knowing full well that he wouldn’t be getting it through the doors with security’s habit of frisking their visitors.

Making sure the last of their affairs were in order, he met Catty back down in the front room, looking upon with a wary smile. Any chance for casual conversation was quelled however, at the sound of an engine rumbling up the drive. Aeric took a steady breath, gripping his bag while continuing to appraise her. “I guess it’s time to go… I hope you’re ready for this.” But how could she be? How could anyone be ready for such a thing? She scarcely learned this covert world existed. Now she was supposed to just leap into its dangers with reckless abandon. But with no other course, Aeric did not linger on ceremony. He led her to the front door which he threw open to find Eddy’s tubby form coming up the walkway. Aeric ushered them outside, intercepting Eddy off before he had a chance to enter the home.

“Well well!” The nagual crowed joyously, eyes lighting up upon seeing the cute little redhead at Aeric’s side. “You didn’t make mention of a lovely young lady coming along. Got a taste for blood sport do you, darling?”

“Eddy—Catty, Catty—Eddy,” Aeric introduced them quickly, cutting off Eddy’s next deplorable statement. “I wasn’t sure if she would be coming. Now, let’s get on the road before someone sees us.”

Eddy was quick to grumble his grievances, mostly mutterings of what a terrible idea this all was. But he shuffled back to his car all the same, taking the driver seat. Aeric gestured for Catty to take the back seat with him, wanting to sit next to the crooked man upfront about as little as he wanted Catty to. And the reason why didn’t take long to become evident.

“You could have sat up here with me, sweet thing!” He taunted her, casting a glance at her in the rearview mirror with a mischievous grin that displayed poorly maintained teeth. “I’m sure it smells like wet dog back there! Speaking of… you got my money, wolf?”

“Yeah, I’ve got your money. But you aren’t getting a cent of it until we make it out of there alive. Why don’t you just keep your eyes on the road, huh?”

Eddy cursed under his breath, but seemed to follow the suggestion. “Well at least you dressed yourself a little more presentable. Too bad it’s not going to matter.”

“And what do you mean by that?”

“Well now that I see you’ve brought this beautiful young creature along,” The nagual said of Catty, wearing another cheesy grin, “I think it’s time we re-evaluated our plan a bit. Let’s face it, this ‘distraction’ plan was dead in the water from the moment of its conception. It was only ever going to get me killed.”

“Seems like an even better plan to me then. Cheaper too.”

Eddy ignored the jest. “Now I’m thinking we play this differently. I go in with the girl and you’re going to be our man on the inside. Well… dog really.” Aeric looked up, eyes narrowing at the back of Eddy’s head. He had a pretty good idea of where this was going. “You’re going to pose as a wolf I caught,” the nagual went on, confirming the suspicion, “I sell you off to the fights and they take you right to the other weres and with any luck, wherever they’re keeping Snow White.”

“Are you fucking insane? You want to see me in that death pit?”

“It’s not going to come to that!” Eddy countered, sighing. “You stroll right in there at their bloody invitation, find Freja, shift into the guise of one of their security guards and walk her right the hell back out! Meanwhile… Catty was it? Catty and I are going to wait in the stands, keeping an eye on everything and ready to run interference.”

“Shift into one of their guards? How the hell do you expect me to do that? I’m a lycanthrope, Eddy. Not a shapeshifter. I can turn into a wolf not wear some other person’s face.”

“You won’t have to as long as you look the part. Listen, this is a solid plan. I’ll explain the particulars when we get there, alright? Be a good dog and lay there quietly until then.”

For the sake of his own sanity, Aeric agreed to hold his tongue. But he sat seething over the details of this new plan. He saw the sense in it; honestly he never felt good about sneaking his way through the compound. There were just too many guards and too much uncertainty. With Eddy’s plan, he would be taken right where he needed to go. Still, if it would be that simple to walk his way back out, then how were they keeping all of those weres on lockdown in the first place? Aeric thought of a million and one reasons, none of them good. It wasn’t often Aeric felt afraid, but as the miles rolled by on their journey to the Upper East Side, he was all nerves. Without even thinking of it, his hand instinctively wandered across the leather seats, tentatively finding Catty’s for support, and hoping she would not shy away. Comforting though her touch was, Aeric could think of nothing other than that bear’s jaws clamping around his jugular.

The event seemed all the more evident as they rolled to a stop in a secluded spot a couple blocks away from their destination. “Alright… hop out Aeric, there’s something I need to show you. Catty, I’ll need you to come up front too. Appearances and all.” Judging by the smirk he was happy to oblige such appearances. Aeric relented, stepping out of the car with Eddy and following him around to the trunk. He waited impatiently while Eddy rummaged around through his belongings only to retrieve a lumpy parcel. As the trappings fell away, it revealed a makeshift coat of what looked like bristly fur. Only, it looked like someone had melted a box of crayons only to pour the soup of colors all over the garment. If rainbows could vomit, then the gaudy looking article was sure to be what came out.

“Um,” Aeric stammered, looking aghast at the thing. “What is this and why are you showing it to me?”

As Eddy moved it around, it seemed to catch the light and shimmer like a jewel. “The skin of a shape-shifter killed in its true form,” he explained. “Even a regular shapeshifter skin is rare as hell. But this one has been tailored and enchanted to change shape in the hands of other shifters. As you just pointed out, you’re no shapeshifter. But luckily for you, we were-beasts still fall under the same category. Strip down and put it on.”

“You’re serious? “ Aeric grimaced.

“No I drove you all the way out here to tell you a fucking joke.”

Snarling, Aeric irritably removed his clothing, piece by piece, lamenting over the fact he’d bothered to change into nice clothes at all. When he was fully in the buff, he accepted the god-awful looking fur coat from Eddy, and slipped it on. Despite its bulky shape and length which dropped nearly to his feet, it felt light as a feather. Almost as though he wore nothing at all. It was quite disconcerting… not to mention the thought of wearing the skin of a dead shapeshifter over his naked body. A brief reflection of the ugly thing in the side-mirror had him feeling like he looked even more ridiculous than the time he wore Catty’s clothes out in public.

“You look good!” Eddy encouraged him upon seeing the look of despair. “Now… think about what you want to wear. Let the sensation of shifting drift over you… but don’t will your body to change. Direct it at the clothes.”

“Do you have any idea how ridiculous that sounds? Direct it at the clothes… what?”

“Aeric just shut up and concentrate. Close your eyes, it helps if you’re not used to it.”

“Fucking ridiculous…” Aeric mumbled again, but he obeyed. As his eyes drifted shut all he could think about was how badly he just wanted to be back into his own clothes. He felt a little tingle of something after a moment, and with a gasp, he opened his eyes, realizing that his wish had come true. Alarmed, he patted down his stomach, feeling every little detail of the button down shirted that even now, was draped over the open car hood. “No fucking way…” he breathed, still in disbelief. “But… how does…” unable to fend off the curiosity, he unbuttoned his shirt, revealing his muscled chest as he removed the shirt. It was completely separate from his pants, and the rest of his attire. But the illusion still held.

“Get them far enough apart and it’ll break though,” Eddy pointed out. “There’s a few other little intricacies you’ll see… but for the most part, if you can imagine wearing it, that’s what you’ll get. Even if that happens to be nothing.”

Eddy quickly regretted his words as that revelation prompted Aeric into the scientific study; he had to find out if that was true after all. His excitement was palpable when he learned that it was. Forced nudity had been a draw back of his greatest gift since the time of his birth. “But what if I have something in these pockets?” He wondered, changing attire back to his original outfit.

“It’ll persist,” Eddy assured him.

“But how’s that even possible? If I were to shift into a ...”

“Jesus Christ I don’t know Aeric. I’m about as much a warlock as I am a scientist. Magic and logic don’t mix as far as I’m concerned.”

“So this is what you mean by shift into one of their security,” Aeric realized. “Take on one of their uniforms…”

“It’s not the best plan I admit… but it’s better than our original. And listen, that thing’s worth a god damn fortune so look after it, alright?”

“Really… then why are you just handing it over to me?”

“Because you need it. And… listen, kid. Just because I do a little shady business with these blokes every now and again don’t mean shit. Far as I’m concerned, it’s us before them. Yeah I’m a cold hearted bastard, but every one of us has lost something to these pricks. Even me.”

Aeric was surprised by the words, having come to never expect such a reaction. “Thanks Eddy,” he said, smirking.

“Don’t go sucking my sick just yet. You can do that after it gets us out of there alive. Now get in character, this isn’t gonna work without a mutt to take in.”

Aeric forgave him the crass shift in attitude, gathering up his scattered clothes and stuffing them back into his bag before obliging. He dropped into his form of a shaggy black wolf and prepared to hop into the back seat only for the nagual to stop him. “Yeah… sorry you’re not going to like this next part but it’s necessary.” Digging through the trunk again, he came back with a muzzle and a leash. The wolf’s green eyes narrowed at him fiercely, but he knew there was no getting around the necessary accessories. Still, ‘Anubis’ was all grumbles as he sat in the back-seat feeling like Hannibal Lecter. It put him in a sour enough mood that he looked every bit the vicious wolf he had to sell. I sure hope Eddy’s got a good explanation for all this… He thought to himself. Would the guards really believe he waltzed up with a capture werewolf?

They would soon find out as they rolled up to the main gates of the senator’s house. They drove right on through this time, Eddy explaining the situation to the same friend from the day before. He was directed to veer off the usual course, their little party rolling into the garage he’d seen the black vans pulling into earlier. Once they parked, the door shut behind them and they were stuck in the thick of things. A group of men, most carrying assault weapons, came forward and motioned for them to come out. Aeric’s heart thumped with anticipation while he watched the men approach and search them both. His gaze lingered on Catty, hoping she would be good under such pressure. Once they were satisfied neither of them were carrying weapons however, they allowed Eddy to step away and retrieve Aeric.

The black wolf leapt out of the car immediately, causing a few men to brandish their guns just in case. He growled at them in reply, sharp eyes belying his intelligence. Everyone involved knew what they were dealing with. One man seemed unafraid, smirking as he strode forward to inspect the wolf.

“How’d you get him so calm?” he asked of Eddy.

Eddy grinned, taking on the role intended for Aeric as he tagged Catty to his side and looked at the man with malicious intent. “Just like my girl here, it takes a firm hand to get them in line at times. Heard about this wolf den on the south side of town, so a couple of the boys and I decided to go clear it out. We killed a few of them… took the others hostage. This here was the alpha, who became most agreeable when he threatened to do away with the survivors same as the rest.” Aeric snarled for effect, looking at Eddy with an intense hatred. It was easy to feign as he saw Eddy’s hand sliding down the small of Catty’s back, taking his own liberties with the role he’d donned.

The evaluator appeared satisfied with the story, giving a nod before calling out to one of his subordinates. “Get one of the wolf collars, will you? This one looks like a brute! Alright… I trust they explained the percentages to you?” he inquired of Eddy. A few brief exchanges and he was seeing them on their way, ordering them back into the car and telling them where to go to enter proper. Aeric was left feeling more nervous than ever as Eddy and Catty were forced to obey, pulling out of the garage to leave Aeric alone with the group of hostile men just as his collar-bearer arrived. He growled as the man approached him with the gaudy, inscribed collar. If this was going to work he had to go along with it for now, so he didn’t fight as it was fitted around his throat and snapped uncomfortably tight. Not a moment later, he was marched away, through a security door and down a long, deathly silent hall.

Aeric drank in every detail, remembering every turn and twist they made just like the last infiltration. He caught the scent of a myriad of creatures on the air, both known and unknown as they walked past a series of doors. When they crossed one in particular however, he drew the ire of the men as he came to a complete stop. Freja! He realized, attention shooting to the door. He’d recognize that scent anywhere. She’s passed that door somewhere… unfortunately, their senator friend wasn’t found of windows so he had no way of knowing what might be on the other side. And his curiosity soon cost him. Aeric yelped, the sounds of his pain echoing off the walls as he felt the sudden rap of a baton explode across his back. The wolf faltered to the ground, head jostling around to see the man who’d struck him.

“Keep moving, freak!” He was ordered, yet given no chance to obey before another blow came… and another one… and another one… and it was then that Aeric learned just how much these men loved their job. Guffaws of laughter carried out by the time he had his fill, while Aeric was left shaken, trembling in both pain and fury by the time they finally continued on. It had taken everything he had not to shift or fight back, knowing Freja’s life depended on it.

~

The journey was likely painful for Catty too, albeit in a much different way as she was forced to bear the insufferable presence of Eddy and his company. The tubby nagual was none too shy about showing her off like a fine prize as they were paraded through the senator’s home, carefully led down the same path he and Aeric had ventured just the day before. “You’re going to love this, babe!” He boomed at Catty, keeping a little pep in his step as they followed their guards down to the arena. “Best god damn entertainment there is! And if we’re lucky, lots of money to be made…”

Everything was going well for them so far as they were guided down the stairs and shown into the grandstands. Eddy kept Catty almost too close for comfort as he ushered her towards as vacant an area as possible. It was a much more difficult feat than yesterday, as far more people had come tonight. Their spot was relatively secluded however, giving them enough space to speak in hushed voices without unwanted parties hearing. “What did I tell you?” Eddy said, gesturing at the caged arena, “God damn magnificent, isn’t it?” He threw an arm across the back of her chair, shuffling a little closer to her. “I’m not sure how long we should give Aeric,” he said quietly, “For now keep your eyes open. We have to be ready for anything. I’ve still got our little distraction planned should we need it.”

He didn’t elaborate on what that might be however, as the first set of fighters were shown in. no Grizzly Terror this time, just two wolves with names of no repute. The quick sound of a bell, and the horrors were on. A blur of gray and brown fur collided as the two wolves viciously lunged into each other. It was a long, brutal fight, leaving both combatants bloodied before the gray wolf finally got his jaws around the throat of the brown, only to rip it out. It took a painfully long time for nature to take its course, leaving a blood soaked floor in the wake of the body finally being dragged out. The other wolf was left to remain despite his injuries, the announcer rolling off his preamble to the next round as the monitor came to life and displayed ‘Jungle Fever’ as the next challenger. Eddy sighed with impatience as the collectors came around to take bets. “Aeric better hurry if he doesn’t want to end up in that ring,” Eddy mused, counting out a couple bills to put on Jungle Fever given the decrepit state of their opponent.

A minotaur and a nagual. Catty should have been shocked. Instead she just found herself nodding as if the revelation were little more than learning a long time friend was gay or something. "Cool....cool..." she said absently. After everything though how could it be shocking? She did manage to catch Aeric's glances concerning her current state of dress, the corners of her lips quirking just a little. Tiny shorts, tank top, sports bra not exactly battle arena wear. She gave a short but slow nod as he pointed out his sister's room and turned to head where directed. It felt a little odd to raid another woman's closet. They were going to rescue the one called Freja. Catty wondered where Alva might be. Hopefully she was alright...Catty caught herself with a small frown. It was a strange enough thought given that only a couple hours ago monster of myth didn't exist in her mind. Now she was concerned for the well being of an apparent werewolf that she knew nothing about shy of being Aeric's sibling. Not that it was wrong, just strange. Shaking her head a little Catty headed into the room and dropped her bag on the tossed up bed.

First she cleared out her other set of shorts and tank top as well as her scrubs. No need to keep those around and keep stinking up the bag. The blood on her scrubs made her hesitate a moment. She was supposed to be heading back to work for night shift with the animals from the accident. Catty's lips pressed together as she heaved a sigh. Of course she wanted to go back. Dr. Henderson needed her there. Even still she had agreed to help and Aeric wasn't wrong. The clinic wouldn't be safe. Going into a battle arena swarming with who knew what was though? "This is crazy," she muttered to herself as she headed to the tossed up closet and dresser to pick out a couple of things. Judging by the clothing littered about she could see herself jiving with this sister. Alva was clearly in touch with her roots, in a way. Most hard rock and metal groups had serious viking overtones. Alva must has spent a decent little sum at Hot Topic given the interesting array of clothing. Band shirt, ripped jeans, and hoodies were prominent but so were oddly shaped and torn shirts, frilly and lacy gothic dresses, and leather pants. Catty picked out a couple comfortable and serviceable clothes and folded them neatly into her bag. For the evening she chose knee high, spiked patent leather boots to go with a short leather skirt and a glittery, draping, blood red halter top. Not entirely certain what people wore to such an event she figured that no one would care if enough skin showed. One last thing, she raided a nearby bathroom for a touch of make up. Might as well complete the look with a very quick and ever so slightly haphazard smokey eye and vibrantly red lipstick. Finally done she headed quickly back downstairs.

Catty was promptly taken aback when she saw Aeric. Her eyes, made all the more vibrantly blue with the make up, swept from crown to toes at least twice. Two thoughts raced across her mind nearly at the same time. Hot damn....I should have picked something nicer. There wasn't time to pick something nicer, not even enough time to really appreciate Aeric's new look but oh how she wished there was time to appreciate it more. The rumbling of a car signaled it was time to leave. Catty hefted her gym bag to her shoulder and quickly followed Aeric outside just as an unfamiliar person, Eddy she could only assume, was wobbling up towards them. Her head jerked a little, taken aback by the man's appearance. Somehow she didn't expect an aged, portly man to be the magical cat creature. Nazgul or whatever Aeric had said. With his crowing hello and comments Catty's immediate opinion of the man was unpleasant. She said nothing, only narrowing her eyes some at him. Blood sport indeed.

Catty was quick to follow Aeric and obliged her gesturing for her to hop into the back of the car along with him. She was quiet even as Eddy made his comments into the rearview mirror. As they headed towards the city the full realization of what they were doing came crashing down on her. Finding out these creatures of lore existed was one thing. Now they were off to do some James Bond level shit to rescue Aeric's sister. Maybe she should have just walked out the door. Lost in her own mental wanderings she was only jarred back when she heard her name. "Hmm?" Wait in the stands and run interference. She missed everything else. Hopefully it wasn't too important for whatever craziness they had cooking. Well they would talk about it later at least. Silence dominated the back of the car. Catty glanced over at Aeric, catching the look of seething anger. Not just that but worry. This was his world and if he was worried then this could be very, very bad. It only seemed to double her own concern about this whole thing. She should have just walked away. A rough warmth crept to her hand. Catty glanced down, her lips softening to a ghostly, wan, smile as she saw Aeric taking her hand. Comfort or support? She wasn't sure but her wrist twisted a little to let her fingers twine with his. Just as she could feel the tightness in his muscles so too could he feel it in her.

They unexpectedly made a stop and Eddy hopped out with Aeric quick to follow. For a moment Catty stayed put but her curiosity was too much and she followed suit. Around to the back she lingered behind the men as Eddy rummaged in the trunk. Neck craning to see she caught a glimpse of whatever it was Eddy wanted to show Aeric. Her head tilted as he explained what it was. Magic skin? Of course her curious mind came screeching to a halt as Eddy told Aeric to strip down. Her eyebrows raised as Aeric acquiesced, albeit with some beastial growlings. Lord have mercy. Catty tried in vain to not watch. It was impossible. If they ever got around to having that talk and she started in on her few choice words this would definitely be a weapon he could use against her. Just get naked and she'd shut up.

Her mind managed to restart as Aeric pulled on the weird, rainbow vomit bristle coat. It was heinously ugly. They spoke of weird magic nonsense. Focus on the coat to shift. Of course given all that had transpired this couldn't be surprising or weird anymore. Catty was fresh out of surprise juice. Even as the coat shifted to what Aeric had been already wearing she couldn't manage even half of the surprise Aeric mustered. His reaction was amusing though. Like a fascinated kid at Christmas. One would think if he grew up in this strange, secret world that nothing would be a shock any more. Wow magic clothes, go figure. It was interesting of course but Catty wasn't sure if she could be shocked or surprised by anything any more.

Catty was starting to understand bits of the plot they had conceived which she had missed the discussion of. She looked down at the massive, shaggy, black wolf. How the hell did she ever think this was just some crossbred dog. Boy was she friggin stupid. Just as Aeric she turned to go back to the car only to halt with Eddy's words. Her head tilted before jerking back in surprise as he drew out a leash and muzzle. This just seemed cruel and by Aeric's reactions he agreed. Still Catty said nothing as Eddy put the devices on Aeric and finally let them get settled into the car. Catty was not looking forward to sitting up near Eddy and being left alone with him. Still she wasn't about to say anything on it and climbed in. Turning she glanced back at Aeric as he seethed in his wolfish form. She reached back and lightly stroked the thick, soft fur of his back. Boy oh boy what a day...and it wasn't even close to over.

She sat back up as they approached their destination, keeping quiet and trying to look curiously puzzled with a touch of fear. That was easy enough. They rolled into a garage only to be surrounded by men with M4 rifles. A healthy dose of worry shown on her face but who wouldn't be worried about being surrounded by men with military weapons? They were ordered out and Catty was quick to comply, keeping her movements slow and easy. Last thing she needed was to set off anyone of these guys who was trigger happy. They were patted down for weapons and moved off to the side. She watched as they approached the car and opened the door for Aeric to spring. Her heart thumped painfully though no one else seemed to be intimidated by the massive black wolf. So focused on Aeric she tumbled some as Eddy roughly yanked her to his side. Firm hand...what she wouldn't give to break that firm hand especially as it drifted to the small of her back.

They were quick enough to buy Eddy's story and pay him for his 'capture.' As they were ordered back into the car Catty's eyes lingered a moment on Aeric as men approached with an ornate collar to fasten onto him. This was their plan? This was stupid. Catty was never a godly woman but she prayed to whoever might listen that things would go alright. In the car and driving up to the front Catty huffed a long sigh. This was insane. This was stupid. It was too late but that didn't make this any dumber. Quickly parked and ushered inside it took her a moment to realize exactly where they were. A senator's house! What the fuck? Carl had said government guys but...hell she had voted for this guy! Catty looked around as they were quickly ushered in, trying hard not to look conspicuous or punch Eddy. He was certainly pleased to be dragging her around. For the time being he was wise to mostly keep his hands sort of to himself. Of course leading her about and placing a pudgy hand on her back but if that hand went any lower he just might lose it. Down some stairs that opened to the massive grandstands surrounding the caged arena. Catty's jaw dropped at the sight. Not just the swarths of people gathered in various states of dress but the arena itself. It was like Mad Max and Wrestlemania had a baby. She didn't have much time to absorb the sight as Eddy ushered her towards a more empty area of the stands. He was being awfully pushy and grabby. Catty glowered some but followed along, there wasn't much in the way of choice.

He picked out some seats, decently away from others so they might speak without being heard. "Yeah...magnificent..." she grumbled back as he put an arm around her seat. All too eager to keep up appearances. Catty breathed lightly through her mouth with him so close and his dental hygiene clearly lacking. "Did we even cover how we'll know he has her?" She kept her voice low only assuming his hearing had to be as good as Aeric's given what he was. Not a portly creep but a...Nargal or whatever. Werecat.

With a resounding and appreciate roar the crowd cheered a two wolves entered the arena. Catty leaned forward some as the match began. It only took a minute for her to become sick to her stomach. Catty was no stranger to blood but this was different. She blanched as the grey and brown blurs snarled and battled while the crowd jeered and cheered. This was disgusting. Honestly she didn't know if it was better or worse knowing what the combatants were. Her face took on a sickly grey hue as more cuts and tears were ripped into the two wolves. It was a long battle. A slow kind of death. Finally quicker for the brown wolf. Catty couldn't stop her hands leaping to her mouth as the grey wolf gave a fierce yank to the throat of the brown wolf. Blood and gore sprayed. The brown wolf collapsed and soaked the floor with its blood. It's gurgling death took years. Finally it stopped moving. The crowd screamed with delight as the bookies walked about for payouts and to take more bets.

As Eddy placed some money on the newcomer, Jungle Fever apparently, Catty stood. "I...bathroom..." she mumbled. It had been years since the sight of blood affected her so. She swayed a moment before hobbling off with directions to the ladies room. Her stomach roiled as she made it to the bathroom, she felt hot and clammy. This was disgusting, vile, barbaric. How could people enjoy this? Catty leaned on a sink, slowly breathing in through her nose and out her mouth. Don't throw up...don't throw up...Slowly she got her stomach under control, her body cooled off even if she could feel the dampness of her back and palms still. In the stalls she heard a toilet flush. Catty ran some cool water and lightly dabbed it around her neck as the other woman exited the stall.

"Catty?" Ice shot through her veins, she knew that voice. "Ally?" She questioned as she turned to see her friend. Sort of friend. Acquaintance through another friend really. At the club Ally might have been dressed like a nun given what she wore now. A black strapless dress that maybe was a total of two feet long. Her breasts barely contained by the tight fabric that ended just barely below her bottom. The dress itself was fascinating. At first glance it was black but as Catty stared it seemed to be made from every color ever imagined, glinting softly in the florescent lights. The cloth didn't shift between colors it just simply was every color and some how black all at once. With thick makeup on and massively tall, strappy stilettos Catty couldn't tell if Ally was going to a club or a street corner.

Ally recovered first and gave Catty a sly grin. "Like the dress? Daddy bought it for me." Somehow Catty knew Ally wasn't talking about her father. "It's by some new, super high end European designer...Tooaha De Danna I think. Something like that. Very elite. So...miss goodie goodie animal doctor came to animal fights huh? Shocking. What will Jess think? Come here with that hottie from the club? He didn't look like a rich playboy." With a flick of her sleek brown hair she washed her hands up.

"Uh...yeah...kinda..." Catty said slowly, too surprised to see Ally there to lie properly. Apparently she wasn't 100% incapable of surprise anymore. "So you...come to these a lot?"

Ally shrugged as she dried her hands off. "Yeah...like every other day it seems. Daddy likes it and I like his money." She turned and finally actually looked at Catty. Her eyes ran up and down a moment before giving a small laugh. "You here for fights or for concert? Yeesh you look like Hot Topic threw up on you. Hey, where are you sitting? I'd like to see mister hot stuff again and you can meet my Daddy." Catty gulped and mouthed some words but no sound came out. Ally shook her head and grabbed up Catty's arm like they were the best of friends. "As always so good with your words Catty. Come on." Just like that Catty was ushered around once more. Shit, shit, shit. What now?

Just outside of the washroom waited Ally's date. Actually he looked a lot like the guy she had left the club with only aged about thirty years. He was a good looking older gentleman in a fine, Armani suit, perfectly tailored to his body. Salt and pepper hair was slicked back, his face completely shaven. His eyebrows rose when he saw Ally dragging Catty along, appraising the sight. "You know I don't like to share," he said with a coy grin to Ally.

"Ew no...not that. This is my friend Catty from college. Catty this is Daddy...er...Alex," she said with a bright grin.

Alex reached out and took Catty's hand. Why was her life like some weird ass movie? He planted a kiss on her knuckles before pulling Ally to his side. "I'm guessing you want to sit with your friend poppet?" Catty's guts started roiling again, the need to vomit resurfacing.

"Yes please," Ally said with a sweet simper. Yep, need to vomit.

"Uh well...I'd hate to intrude on...you guys. It's fine I'll just go back..."

Alex cut her off, "nonsense. Any friend of Ally is a friend of mine. Now show us to your seats." It wasn't a request, the man had a gentle and yet firmly commanding voice.

"Ahhh...ok..." Oh boy Eddy was going to be pissed.

Catty came back to where Eddy was seated. "Uh Eddy...this is Ally and Alex...I ran into them, well her, in the bathroom. They...wanted to say hi," she said with an awkward grin. Catty to his left and Ally to his right at least that might appease him a little despite the potential disaster to the plan. Alex shook Eddy's hand before sitting beside Ally, putting a tight, possessive grip around her shoulders. Ally leaned back to look at Catty with a devilish grin glancing between her and Eddy. Catty boiled on the inside. Ally certainly had the wrong idea about her 'date.'

Aeric struggled to remain composed as the men marched him to their final destination; a large room, barren except for a series of massive cages which held were-beasts of all sorts. Wolves were by far the most common, but he spotted the Grizzly Terror, scarred and ill-tempered curled in one corner. There was even a nagual like Eddy, looking scrawny and incapable of surviving against any of the other predators. Even as they walked Aeric in, a large werepanther was being led out; undoubtedly the next contender for their disgusting entertainment. Not a single one of the creatures rose their head to look upon the new arrival. Each and every one of them had the appearance of sullen defeat, or unspeakable fear. Why haven’t they risen up? He couldn’t help but wonder. The look of defiance wasn’t written on a single one of them… and weres, wolves especially, were typically proud creatures full of fight. Small wonder the humans came up with the idea of pitting them against one another.

Aeric was brought to a large, empty kennel, where the door was opened before his muzzle was torn off and his new masters shoved him inside with a harsh kick at his flank. Aeric fell to the ground of his prison with a yelp, before wheeling around and snarling at the group of men. They sneered right back at him, looking so very much like that hunter from the night this shit all started, before slamming the gate shut and bolting the lock. Fierce, emerald eyes bored into the men as they walked off, conversing. To his delighted surprise, the guards were content to abandon them entirely, abandoning the imprisoned creatures to their solitude. There’s bound to be someone at the door though… He realized. A swift appraisal told him there were still a couple of cameras overlooking the cages. Someone could easily be watching the footage in real time, but it was a risk he would have to take. Maybe he could shift and get out of his cell in time to ambush anyone who came in to stop him. But then, why hadn’t one of the other weres tried to pull that off? He investigated the lock; it wouldn’t be very difficult to pull open. The space between the bars looked wide enough that his arm could simply fit through and finagle with it. Maybe it was the cameras… He passed them one more wary look before deciding ‘fuck it.’ Steadying himself, he prepared to shift.

. . .Nothing.

Panic gripped him at once as he was reminded of his first few days at Catty’s house. Shifting was right there… right on the cusp like a word you couldn’t remember on the tip of your tongue. Heart racing he tried again and again, receiving the same results every time. Slowly, understanding clawed its way through his mind. The inscription on the collars… same as that guy’s sword… oh god they keep us from shifting. His heart was practically hammering out of his chest now. The reason for their submissive became clear; the other weres taking no interest as Aeric began a frantic dance they were all too familiar with. The wolf squirmed and wiggled, doing everything he could to brush his collar up against the bars of his cage and try to snag where it latched shut behind his head. But it was no use. No…no… no… he thought, exasperated. Fuck, fuck, fuck! Suddenly, the images of Freja and the other animals being ripped apart yesterday was becoming all too painstakingly real. Stupid, Aeric… he chastised himself, threatening to rub his neck raw as he refused to give up on getting free of the infernal contraption. He had to agree with Catty’s assessment, reiterating her sentiments. Stupid… fucking… plan…

~

Eddy glanced at Catty with some concern as she blanched. Great, that was just what he needed; some green-around-the-gills girl puking on his shoes. But worse than that was that she would draw attention to them. He was nervous enough when she stood up, only to snag one of the officials and ask for directions. He felt stiff as a board as he watched her go, feeling entirely too uncomfortable sitting there by himself. He was one lonely pussy in a sea of humans that would have gladly paid to see him killed in that arena. He cursed himself a little over the cowardice, but he’d seen enough shifters die in that pit to have earned it. He grumbled the whole time she was away, lamenting over the fact that no, they had not thought so far as to how to determine Aeric had Freja. He assumed the wolf would call or text, giving him some sort of queue. But as Aeric was still a novice with that flashy coat he’d just gave him, it was just as likely he wouldn’t even be able to find it in his endless supply of pockets.

Why the fuck am I doing this? He seethed, stewing on it right up until Catty reappeared with unexpected guests. Eddy looked like a deer in headlights as the older gentleman snared him in a handshake. He looked sharply at Catty, before narrowing his eyes a little at Ally’s strange dress. “Oh! Well charmed I’m sure! Name’s Eddy… so you gonna be joining us then?” Apparently fucking so, as they appeared to settle in. “Great… great… the more the merrier, you know!” though the way his beady brown eyes sparked at Catty said he was anything but merry about it. Luckily the next match began soon after, with a vicious looking black panther waltzing into the gate. The beast had a wilder look in its eye than most of the creatures they dragged in. The bell had scarcely rang before it lunged out with a furious scream and snared with wolf with its razor sharp claws. Unlike the last match, there was nothing slow about this one. The wolf was finished in seconds, though the delay came when the guards came to remove the body and the werepanther would not relinquish it; ripping into the corpse with a stunning ferocity. If it truly was a were, it seemed all humanity had been beaten out of the thing.

Aeric had collapsed to the floor of the cage, breath labored from his efforts. His mind ran wild, wondering what he was going to do, how he was going to get out of this situation… But all that was torn away when the door swung open and angry footsteps marched inside. Aeric bolted up at once, growling threats whilst staring his captors down.

“Dead already? Fucking hell… We’re going to run out of them at this rate.”

“Nothing to be done about it. The boss wants The Terror throw back in.”

“Shit we’re really going to run out of them if we do that. I’ve been making a lot of money off that panther too… They ever going to fix those crippled ones up or what?”

“I don’t know. They were talking about maybe bringing in some vet girl to take a look at them but they’re dead either way, aren’t they?”

“You got that right. Still... a vet? It’s not like they’re actually animals..”

“What, you think they’re people? Look at these fucking things!” He slammed his baton against the nagual’s cage, drawing an angry hiss as the creature folded its ears back, ready to pounce.

Vet girl… Aeric pondered their conversation. Surely they don’t mean… but why would they want Catty, specifically for that? It still didn’t make any sense; from everything he knew she was still early on in her career. She thought a werewolf was a house pet for two weeks! Why would the government take such an interest in her? No, it has to be somebody else. He tried convincing himself of that anyway, but couldn’t fit the sinking feeling that he was wrong. But it would likely take a lot more than vet to save them tonight as the armed guards unleashed the Grizzly Terror, their weapons aimed at the beast’s skull. It bad tempered bear was uncharacteristically compliant, going along as he was ushered out of the room to leave the rest of the prisoners in solitude once more.

With a sigh, Aeric collapsed back to the floor. Hearing about a ‘vet girl’ instinctively turned his mind to Catty. He wondered where she was now… still in the stands with Eddy? Hopefully she was safe… but that could change even if she was. Anytime now they’d start to wonder where he was and why this was taking so long. And that was if they didn’t seem him dragged out onto that stage first. The fear of that kept sinking in, especially as the next round begin and the Terror’s roars were so loud and fearsome that he could hear them all the way back here. After some long, uncomfortable minutes, he could make out the sound of the announcer’s voice declaring the bear the winner, and the angry group of guards with which he was becoming to familiar burst back into the room an instant later.

“Fucking cunt bear! I lost over a grand on that fight.”

“You know the boss is going to be pissed if he finds out you’ve been betting on these.”

“Yeah whatever fuck him. So who we letting this bear kill next?”

The squad leader’s eyes narrowed at Aeric at once, meeting his green orbs in a deadlock. “That one,” he said plainly. “I don’t like the way he’s been looking at me. Besides, he looks mean enough to wear ole’ Terror down. That white wolf almost got him and he looks bigger than her.”

Aeric was all growled at the mention of his sister, as well as his fate. His breath was furious, anticipation burning through his veins. He wasn’t sure if he should fight or go along… either way felt like accepting death. The M4’s trained on him still felt a little more real than the bear though.

“Gonna need a name for the fans.”

“Eh who cares? Doubt he has long…” the man chewed on the thought for a second. “Black fur… call him Midnight.”

As the man went off to get things set up the remainder of the guards approached Aeric’s cage and forced him out. His fur stood on end, impressive white fangs displaying threats even as he relented. This had to be some terrible nightmare… it was all too surreal. His paws carried him seemingly of his own accord as the arm men marched him out of the room and up the hall. Coming from the opposite direction was a pair of men carrying the dead body of the werepanther he’d seen not minutes before. It was hardly recognizable after the mauling from the bear. As they came upon a set of doors, one being the room from which he’d sensed Freja, Aeric was unable to look away.

Don’t go right, don’t go right… He pleaded, afraid for what it would mean if they took corpses into that room. But it seemed the world cared not for his hopes as the door on the right was thrown open, only for the panther’s mangled body to be dragged in, and shut an instant later.

~

Eddy was growing increasingly worried as the minutes ticked by and there was nothing from Aeric. Now that the bloodthirsty bear was back on the stage, he was becoming aware of just how little time they had left. Either Aeric had managed to break away and was walking amongst them covertly, or he was going to find himself up against that horror pretty soon. Catty’s guests didn’t do much to put him at ease either, and while Eddy tried to make small talk he was starting to appear a bumbling fool; so unlike the smooth conman he prided himself on being. The biggest reason he’d parted with that shapeshifter coat was to avoid this whole distraction plan and hopefully getting himself killed. It was starting to seem like that may have been a waste now…

“Midnight huh?” He quipped to their party when the name of the next challenger appeared on the monitor across from them. “Well let’s hope he puts up a better fight than that panther! Still, smart money’s on the bear!”

And truer words had never been spoken if the furry black shape that entered the ring to face said bear was anything to go by. Eddy’s eyes went wide when he saw Aeric step into the ring, a string of curses running through his brain. The fucking fool! He thought, feeling his heart sink. There was no way the idiot was going to survive this, not if he was stupid enough to end up in the situation in the first place. Great… all for naught! He glanced over at Catty, wondering how she would take this new development. While he wasn’t certain of her relationship with the dog, he could certainly smell the pheromones on the way over. Judging by his recent string of bad luck, odds were the girl would fall into hysterics when she saw her boyfriend ripped apart. The two of them would be sure to follow… The way Alex carried himself he was probably a man of high standing in this place. They couldn’t make false moves…

Neither could Aeric as the bell rang and the fight began. The black wolf was swift as could be, bolting as his opponent came in with a swipe. Aeric barked out a challenge, backing away and keeping his eyes on the enemy as the bear wheeled around to face him. A roar was his answer in reply, followed by a charge. Aeric stood perfectly still, nearly giving Eddy a heart attack as he refused to move even as the bear came closing in. But at the last second he dashed to the side, leaving the werebear to stumble in surprise and crash right into the metal frame of the arena. He reeled, shaking his head with disorientation. But Aeric didn’t afford him the chance to gather his senses. The wolf was a black blur, jaws snapping at the bears face. He caught him on the snout, leaving it bloody but paying the price for it as a huge paw swatted him down in answer.

Aeric wiggled from his back, recovering to all fours as the bear reared on his hind legs and came slamming down. Aeric got away by the skin of his teeth, his heart racing. But the bear ran for him soon after. Aeric thought back to all his chases with Freja, putting on a huge burst of speed as he ran in a circle, sticking to the outer perimeter just as his sister was want to do with the fence back home. It gave the bear a run for his money at first, though just like Freja yesterday, there wasn’t enough room to maneuver. Another swipe got Aeric on the flank, claws gouging his hip while the brute strength sent him skittering across the marble floor. Clearly furious, the bear continued to come for him.

Hardly able to take his eyes off the display, Eddy hissed under his breath, brows furrowing in frustration as he realized he would have to rely on a distraction after all. He didn’t look forward to what was about to happen… not one bit. But his hand dug in his pockets all the same, and he leaned over, feigning a kiss on the cheek so as not to alert the two who sat with them.

“Take these,” he whispered quietly, lips pressed right next to her ear while he silently stuffed his set of car keys into her hand. “When shit gets crazy, run. Get to the car and have it ready for us.” He left it at that, dry lips ending in a little peck on her cheek as intended before he pulled away and stood up. After a deep breath, he shouted at the top of his lungs, “ONE OF THEM’S LOOSE!”

As all eyes turned towards the commotion, towards Eddy, he shifted. And no longer were they looking at a fat, tubby man, but a massive cat that sprang from its resting place and pounced the nearest spectator right to the ground. He dug his claws into her back for good measure, breaking the skin and causing the lady to scream in panic. How quickly the rest of the privileged rich people mimicked her was almost magical. The people nearest the display were the first to their feet, a crowd of people causing such a disarray that the armed men watching from up above couldn’t have fired their weapons upon the nagual even if they tried. Eddy didn’t stay in one place long enough to give them the chance though, he jumped away from his prey and continued to descend down to the cage.

Aeric saw the end coming in the form of a one ton grizzly bear that was ready to make him chew toy. But just as he expected the bear to crash upon him, the Grizzly Terror stopped short, head lifting to watch the people above them. Aeric followed the bear’s gaze, surprised to find the entire grandstand in a panic. A swarm of bodies rushing for the exit was the first thing that he noticed… but then the sight of a large cat jumping down to land upon the top of their cage caught his attention. Eddy? Aeric realized, watching as the tubby cat managed to wiggle his smaller frame between the bars and drop into the pit with them. The bear reeled in surprise as the cat rushed right by him, only the change into a portly, naked man with balding hair. Eddy knew the beast had a good chance of attacking, but took the chance of potential escape appearing much sweeter to him.

“Come on you bastard! On your feet this is our chance!” Luckily Eddy was quick to read a situation, realizing what the problem was when Aeric was not forthcoming with a shift. His meaty hands dropped to the wolf’s collar at once, straining with effort until the gaudy, silver band unclamped. Not a moment later Eddy stumbled back, alarmed as the Grizzly Terror approached him. A quick gesture of the paw told Eddy what the creature wanted, and, muttering curses, the nagual grudgingly obliged. His hands clamped around the much bigger collar, breaking it open just as a couple of floor guards finally came to terms with what was happening in the pit. Aeric was already back to the form of a man, blue shirt and khaki pants back on just like the last time he shifted. He had no time to appreciate that though. The guards already had the gate open and were coming in with weapons hot.

Seeing the danger, the bear lunged forward, collar scarcely off his neck before the charge. The men opened fire at once, bullets sinking into the bear but not deterring him as he barreled through the first man. His corpse was left on the floor, neck twisted at an awkward angle while the bear continued to the next without missing a beat. By the time he reached his second opponent though, he’d taken enough shots to do serious damage. His legs gave out just as he caught the man’s shouting head between his jaws, crushing it even as his weight came toppling to the floor. As they hit, the bear pulled away, shifting into the form of a naked, bullet-riddled man who lay dying on his back. Aeric rushed over to the man, his enemy turned savior. But there was nothing to be done, leaving him little choice but to choke on his own blood. But as his eyes met Aeric’s, he stilled, and it was then Aeric noticed the faint smile buried beneath his bushy, brown beard. It looked like shifting one last time had given him some measure of peace before his eyes grew dim as lifeless glass.

“COME ON!” Aeric finally became aware of Eddy tugging at him. Aeric stumbled back a step, still reeling with everything going on. In the rush of everything he barely felt the terrible pain in his hip, or the wet feel of blood seeping through his pants leg. He could still walk, and that was decidedly good enough as he found Eddy shoving one of the guards’ discarded rifles into his hand. If things had been a panic before, it was utter chaos now that gun fire had rang out. Mass panic wasn’t enough to deter the men from their job however, as the rest of the guard contingency rushed to action.

“Do you know where Freja is?” Eddy shouted over the commotion, grabbing up the other M4 from the dead man’s hands.

“Yeah! Follow me!” Aeric led the push forward, though they didn’t make it far before the men in charge of watching the weres came pouring out of the hall. Aeric didn’t even hesitate, lifting the rifle up and opening fire on them. He had no time to savor the victory as he saw a bullet blow right through the head of the man who’d beaten him senseless upon arrival, as he stepped forward, pressing the advantage while their enemies scattered for cover, and giving Eddy and Aeric a chance to dart out of the arena and take some of their own. “We have to get through those doors!” he told Eddy, just before throwing himself up against a support beam wide enough to protect him from a sudden return of fire. “Where’s Catty?” He asked, finally realizing she wasn’t to be seen.

“Warming the car up for us, so we better make this quick!”

Aeric growled, hoping beyond hope she was alright. But he didn’t have time to linger on whatever plight she might be facing, as he popped out of cover and delivered a sporadic barrage of bullets upon his enemy’s hiding place. “So much for a stealthy infiltration,” he lamented, looking over to the nagual with regret as they huddled away from another onslaught. Aeric growled, realizing they were in a pretty bad situation as he saw a bullet cut right through the edge of the stone to his right. If they didn’t get out of this situation quick, it would only be a matter of time before the place was cleared out enough for the men up top to fire upon them as well.

Catty grinned apologetically at Eddy. She really hadn't meant to bring back company. Especially very untrusted company. Ally was mostly a bimbo so Catty assumed she was safe enough. It was her, ugh, Daddy that concerned Catty. Hopefully he was just some wealthy asshole who just thought he was watching animals kill each other. Or weres. Which ever, just so long as he was just a plain spectator. Catty kept glancing towards the new pair. Ally was all over Alex when she was giving Catty sly looks. Gross. Catty wouldn't be surprised if Ally just started blowing him then and there. No that was rude. Ally had enough class to find a dark corner at least. The next match was beginning. Catty glanced to the arena to see the wild looking panther stalk in. She didn't even have time to look away before the panther sprung and tackled the wolf down. It was over in mere seconds. The urge to vomit rose once again to her throat. Not just for the death but the way the panther mauled its fallen opponent. Catty had to look away and luckily the blood thirsty roar of the audience drowned out most of the crunching sounds.

With the ring cleaned up finally a new challenge appeared. Catty's eyes widened at the sight of the massive bear. A clearly vicious match up. The bear would have size and power but the cat would be faster. Both had razor teeth and claws. Catty shuddered and stared very avidly at her feet. She couldn't watch this bloodsport any longer. That didn't mean she could block out the sounds. Even above the mighty roar of the crowd the screams and roars of the combatants rose above. At least she could play the part of being dragged there. There had to be a few in the crowd only there because they were dragged by a significant other. Or a sugar daddy. Catty glanced over to Ally and Alex once more. Ally couldn't be more unaware of the carnage on display. Catty had to give the girl credit. Either she really liked the guy or was really good at acting. Alex, meanwhile, joined in with the cheers and shouting.

The fights seemed to drag on and on until finally the massive bear overcame the panther. One well bloodied and the other dead. Catty shuddered. Why did people think this was fun? Were people really this sick. Apparently yes. The booming voice of the announcer appeared again. "Midnight...creative," she said with a sarcastic chuckle. She hardly cared which could fight better. More than the crazy world she had found herself in she wanted to be out of that place. Despite only just learning of the secret world of monsters she was quickly developing a distaste for how they were treated. She chanced a glance as the new combatant was loosed into the arena. Her heart disappeared and her brain turned to fuzzy static. Of course she would know that black, furry form anywhere. "Aeric..." she whispered under her breath. This couldn't be going any worse. She didn't even realize she was suddenly clutching Eddy's wrist as if it were the only thing keeping her grounded to reality.

The match began and every movement sent an icy tremor through her. Aeric did well to avoid for a while but his speed only did so much. The bear was wounded but clearly a monster of a competitor. For once Catty couldn't look away. Her heart found its way back only to hammer painfully in her chest. So this was it? Typical story right? Boy meets girl, girl watches boy get torn apart by bear. Disney channel shit. So focused on the fight she jumped when Eddy's face was suddenly against her cheek. She felt the keys slipped into her hands as he spoke. Only a small nod gave him any idea she even heard what he said. She cringed a little at the dry peck on her cheek but looked up at he stood. Her head tilted at his sudden shout. Not knowing what he planned her shock at his shift was a real and palpable as anyone's in the crowd. Apparently still not out of shock juice.

In a eruption of panicked frenzy the crowd surged around towards the exits. Catty couldn't help but notice Alex was gone before Ally had time to move. Though the smug amusement of that quickly turned to a reviled chuff as Ally fled, uncaring that her tight, tiny dress had very quickly worked up her bottom to her hips revealing a very lacy, purple thong. Get to the car. Had to get to the car. Catty's legs barely obeyed her as she pushed herself out of the seat. She kicked the heels off, barely able to walk in them normally let alone when her legs were filled with a spectacular blend of jelly and lead. Had to get to the car, get the car started. They would be ok. She just barely made it to the exit before giving one last look to the arena. Just in time to see Eddy running naked across it. Catty cringed a little at the sight but appreciated the bravery. She wouldn't run around naked with a vicious bear.

At the rear of the panicking crowd Catty at least didn't get trampled. Her legs worked a little better as she followed the terrified swarm of rich sickos. In the thick of things she caught sight of a familiar head of thin, greying hair. No, couldn't be though. Most of these old codgers looked enough alike. It would just be silly if he was there. Outside just as much panic ensued as cars were fired up to flee the scene. Catty had to dodge a bumper or two before making it to Eddy's car. Limbs trembling she slid into the driver's seat and managed to ease the car back into as much shadow as she could, killing the lights. All she could do was wait. She looked around at all the doors. Waiting and expecting two wolves and a jungle cat to come burst out of them at any second.

*~*

"What the hell is going on down there?" Senator McCoulhan, democrat surprisingly, raged from up in his office. He had been watching the fights on his live stream far upstairs when all hell broke loose. His wrinkle, pudgy face somehow both furious red and ashen grey. Misty grey eyes, sunken from a life time of scheming politics, blazed his fury.

"Sir, someone in the crowd was a beast. He's gone down and seems to be-" a quick backhand to the face cut the man off.

"I fucking know! I have eyes you dimwitted shit for brains! I want them dead. Kill all of them. I can't have them escaping into the city! Send the interns up here, stop all phone calls out. No police, no fire, no emergency whatever-the-fuck of any kind!" If any of this got out he could go to prison. Worse, he might not get reelected. "I want all the guards down there now! Open fire on any beast. We can get more."

True to his word every guard around the place was summoned. The grounds nearly empty of guests anyways. Each guard was outfitted with M4s and thick kevlar vests. No non-lethals were. Kill on sight were their orders. Mostly only poorly trained security guards they rushed in like a bad movie. All haphazard, no tactics at all. Of course there was one thing that utterly no one suspected. Aeric and Eddy weren't the only ones attempting infiltration. There were no perfect stars aligning, no serendipity. It had been a slow mission. Waiting and watching. Posing as guards and security. Biding their time. In all the chaos no one could figure out where the bullets were flying from. Choice guards were killed, keys taken. Only a couple of them were there, indiscernible from the others. Mostly human, one or two a fellow hidden myth.

"This way!" A guard called out, waving the two men towards the rooms with the cages. The others were going through, loosing all of the captured weres. Suddenly things were looking up as collars were dropped. A few weres fled, unwilling to risk capture again. The one Nagual was quick to flee the scene. Mostly it was the wolves that barreled in. They smelled their kin and they smelled their freedom.

“Oh man, we’re going to die here, Eddy…” Aeric lamented, inching ever closer to the naked, pudgy nagual as more bullets threatened to turn their hiding place into Swiss cheese. They popped out to return fire a number of times to no success. Untrained as a lot of the security was, they were still better trained than the cat and dog that stood against them.

“God damn it!” Eddy growled, having to agree with the assessment. “This is exactly why I talked about staying on their good side, dog!” His comments were cut short as a round blew through the beam, dreadfully close to his skull. “Fuck it…” he declared in a weak voice. “FUCK IT!” he declared again, growing more confident. “If I’m gonna die I’m taking some of those assholes with me.” With the courage to match the way he dove into that ring, he leapt out of his hiding spot with a furious shout, firing wildly at their opposition. Body after body began to drop, leaving those to realize what was going on to drop back down into cover or join them.

“Holy shit, Eddy!” Aeric commented, having caught a glance of the carnage. Only, just about every one of Eddy’s rounds had actually missed their mark; his chaotic spray of bullets drowning out the sound of the hidden agents joining into the fight. The wolf and nagual quickly realized what was happening, eyes scanning the coliseum to spot the skirmishes erupting throughout. He recoiled when he noticed one of the guards posted up above aiming his firearm right at them, but not a moment later a bullet cut right through his neck, sending his body toppling to the stands below. By this point so much gunfire had rang out that Aeric’s ears felt like they were going to bleed. It was ten times worse thanks to his keen earing, leaving him hardly able to think over the white noise in his ears. His eyes caught wind of the man waving them over though, and while Aeric wasn’t quite sure who these guys were or what was going on, he thought it best to place his chances with anyone else shooting at the senator’s men.

When they had a clear moment, Aeric led the charge, dashing out of hiding with Eddy on his heels, each keeping tight hold of their weapons. Aeric didn’t even bother asking who their unexpected saviors were, nor even thank them for the bail out. He had a one track mind at this point, knowing it was now or never as far as Freja was concerned. He saw several of the wolves rushing out to join in the fray, but neither Freja, nor any other member of his pack was among them. “Did you get everyone out?” He frantically asked of the man who’d waved them over. “What about the injured ones?” But there was no chance for reply before reinforcements converged on the pit, weapons hot. Aeric hit the day as rounds came flying in on their position, though as the friendly soldiers returned fire, he was quick to join them, managing to land a shot on a guard just as he attempted to attack from around a corner.

“The ones well enough to walk,” came a stiff reply, “Anyone else will have to wait until we’ve got this place secure and McCoulhan in custody; dead or alive. If the two of you can fight then we could use the extra men. We’re going to press forward and take him down.”

“I say we put the bastard in the ring,” one of the other soldiers suggested, “Show him what it’s like to be trapped helpless with a bloodthirsty shifter.”

None of that was good enough for Aeric. If he didn’t see Freja with his own eyes that meant she was still here somewhere, and to hell with leaving her fate hanging in the balance while these assholes played cat and mouse with the senator. “I’m here to save my sister not bring down the government.” Aeric told them. Eddy looked less certain, hovering between Aeric and the heavily armed men he felt much better about casting his lot with.

“Go back for her if you wish,” their squad leader told him pointedly, “But if you’re not going to help us shut this place down, then you and your nudist friend are on your own.” The decided, he gave the order to move out, his men falling in formation as they went to finish this. Those weres who remained moved on with them, joining the fray while Aeric and Eddy were left behind in the hall, now cleared of all but the bodies of the less fortunate.

“Of all days to give you that fucking coat,” Eddy grumbled, feeling embarrassed over the comment while he watched their short-lived allies leave, only for the sound of gunfire to break out again a moment later.

“Come on,” Aeric said, ignoring the jest, “Freja’s this way.”

He led Eddy further down the hall, to and through the door where he sensed Freja was being kept. The room was stark white and heavy with the scent of death. Eddy’s expression soured with distaste the moment they stepped inside, eyes scanning the terrible scene. Like the room Aeric was taken to, this one was full of cages holding weres. Only unlike those beasts, the ones kept here were battered and broken. There was evidence that someone had tried giving them medical attention; soiled bandages and other tributes to shoddily done work. Many of them creatures lay dead and motionless however, left neglected while injuries from the fights had taken their toll. He rushed over to one of the cells upon noticing an unmoving lump of white fur lying on its side.

“Freja…” he breathed out upon seeing her, fearing the worst. But as he came upon her, he noticed she was still breathing; albeit it shallowly. She seemed out of it though, completely unaware of their presence. Aeric felt hot with anger as he noticed the cuts and abrasions all over her, recalling all too well how she’d been thrashed in the ring. Like the others, bandages had been hastily wrapped around some of the worst injuries. But just as the rest, they looked neglected, old, and stained reddish-brown.

“Come on, let’s get her out…” Eddy said, to which Aeric nodded.

After breaking their way in, Aeric rushed to his sister, running a hand through her fur which was slick with perspiration. Freja only moaned lightly in response, eyes seeming to shift around beneath her lids but never opening. With no other option, Aeric carefully hefted his sister in his arms, muscles complaining against the unwelcome weight of a full-grown wolf. “You’re going to have to cover us,” he said to Eddy, who could only grumble in response. Their odds of survival were going down by the minute. Yet all they could do was press on, and so Eddy deigned to take the lead, giving Aeric less than a pleasant sight as followed behind the naked man.

Fortunately for them, their delay gave the resistance fighters enough time to clear the pit and work their way back upstairs, leaving the two of them to continue uninhibited. Aeric tried not to pay any attention to the carnage all around them. Bodies were everywhere, but worse than the sight of their gruesome ends was the smell. The iron from all the blood stung his nostrils. It was so strong he could practically taste the metal. It wasn’t much better when they made their way back up, stepping over a few corpses of soldiers who’d met their end on the stairs. By now Freja was growing cumbersome, testing Aeric’s strength as they walked through the lavish home which was now in a state of disarray. Bullet holes, corpses, and broken objects were not the decorum of choice; a testament to the battle that had just taken place, while nearby gunshots sounded from where it still raged.

“I think it’s this way!” Eddy shouted back at Aeric, going to turn a corner. As soon as he did however, Aeric saw the tubby man go down like a sack of potatoes. An assailant had been waiting for them just around the bend, managing to down Eddy with one of the batons Aeric had come to despise. Stunned and rooted in place by the wolf in his arms, Aeric could barely register what happened before the guard had his hands on Eddy’s fallen gun and was aiming it at the two of them. He had half a second to realize his life was over before the guard pulled the trigger and…. Nothing. Eddy’s mag had been completely spent from his Rambo moment earlier, unnoticed from his inexperience and leaving the weapon about as useful as a club. Realizing the stroke of luck, Aeric had no choice but to lower Freja to the ground. He didn’t have time to shift or defend himself however, before the enemy was on him.

Aeric felt himself hit the ground, tackled away from his sister while his opponent fell upon him. Growling, he fought back, managing to land his fist right into the security guard’s face. But his opponent had too much leverage. He couldn’t get him off, and before he knew it, Aeric found himself in much the same position Catty had been in earlier. Meaty hands wrapped around his throat, leaving him to kick and struggle as oxygen was suddenly cut off. He clutched at the arms of his pursuer, looking right into his furious, sneering face. Despite his efforts, there was nothing the were could do, filling him with a sudden panic. Yet just when he thought it was over, he became conscious of a stir of movement. At first he thought it might be Eddy, but then he became aware of a blur of white. A second later, the man was screaming and his grip relaxed. Aeric sucked in the breath he’d been deprived and rolled over coughing as he felt the man’s weight let up.

Once he composed himself, Aeric looked upon the scene to see the man struggling on the ground, his arm caught between Freja’s jaws. Aeric could hear the unmistakable sound of tearing flesh as his sister gnashed and thrashed, doing as much damage as possible. The man swung his fist, catching her in the side which caused her to let go. But he had no time to recover before Freja was on him again, jaws sinking into his jugular this time. Aeric looked away just before the crimson spray erupted, having seen more than enough blood today. Nothing could be done about the gurgling sounds that accompanied his death though. A moment later, the beautiful white form of his sister, now tainted red, collapsed to the ground in a huff.

“Freja!” He called with alarm, rushing to her side after he heard the thud. Glossy blue eyes focused on him briefly, before she gave a little shudder and passed out from the exertion of her kill. He wasted no time in scooping her back up, happy to see that Eddy was slowly getting back to his feet too, now accompanied with a nasty head gash that left a streak of blood across his face. “Come on,” Aeric told him, continuing on, “We have to get the hell out of here.” The nagual nodded, his senses still askew after the harsh blow, but managed to stumble on.

They were able to make the rest of the trip without incident. Aeric tried not to get distracted by the continuing sounds of gunfire, though secretly he wondered how the fight was going. Would they truly be able to get to the senator? As far as he was concerned, going to war with these pricks was beyond a bad idea. For him, there was little choice involved when it came to saving a loved one; but the idea of taking on the government itself? That was a losing battle in his mind. There was nothing to be gained. And so he was comfortable in his choice to abandon them to their devices, stepping out into the cool night air in the search for Catty in their getaway car. With her stealthy tactics it was up for her to spot them first, but when he headlights came back to life, Aeric and Eddy wasted no time rushing to the vehicle.

Eddy helped Aeric get Freja into the back seat, where her brother jumped in with her while Eddy quickly rushed around to take the front passenger seat. “Go, go! Get us out of here!” He shouted to Catty, scarcely before he had the door closed. Now that Aeric had a chance to sit down and the adrenaline began to subside, he became aware of the harsh mistreatment of his body. The gashes across his hip hurt worst of all, but the aches in his body reminded him of the beating he’d received as a wolf while the pain that came with swallowing reminded him how close he’d been to getting strangled. He let none of that bog down his mind however as his hand continuously ran through Freja’s fur coat, comforting her as much as possible while he fell into a stony silence, yet reeling from the crazy shit they just went through.
