Tarak Tales -- Round Two -- OOC Thread

Into The Unknown is the second Tarak adventure, this one being somewhat more involved, plot-wise, and rather more character-driven in some areas. Yes, we're starting with Cersei, and sticking with her for the first few exchanges, so that we can get her character arc rolling. When the time is appropriate, she will recruit the others. But here is where we can talk OOC about all this kind of stuff. As per usual.

Oh, right, I was gonna get into the habit of posting some standard opening material. Here goes:

Most of you know the deal, but I'll reiterate it, just to be certain. This game is taking place in the world of Tarak, the Tower City, and all of you are residents of the city. It's a huge metropolis, but it's all fairly tightly packed inside this big mesa.

Nearly everyone in the world is pretty much average; they may get skilled, they may have heroism in them, but they're basically just normal folks. Some few are born to be heroes, though, or villains. In Tarak, that includes you people. That's why you have a lot of extra attribute dice, to start with. Now, there aren't such things as professional adventurers in this world; if there were, you'd be some. But every community has people that can be called upon to help out with unusual situations. For Tarak, that small group includes you.

You're part of a small group of movers and shakers; basically, you're the adventurers of the city, so whenever there''s a big job that has to be done, the people in the know can call upon you and your friends. It's a big town, but the group of people qualified to handle unusual situations is generally quite small, so you all know each other and have a working relationship; most of the time you have full-on friendships. Not every member of this group is available every time something comes up, but there's enough folks around, a mission group can usually be rounded up for any given task.

In game terms, the fact that you are PCs gives you an automatic advantage, and in this sort of relatively insular community, that advantage has not gone unnoticed. You're already experienced at working together and at dealing with unusual situations, so that's why you start off with an extra 10D in starting skill dice from the usual, and have gear and such that you likely wouldn't otherwise possess, given your day jobs. Further, although I like to keep my groups pretty small online, there is room for people to drop in and out as the situation warrants (between adventures, at least, or during stopping points within adventures if we have to). New PCs are just members of the group that haven't been called upon yet, "on camera" so to speak, so existing PCs have an excuse to treat the newcomers as friendly and trusted. I don't know if we'll get far enough for that to matter, but if we do, the dynamic is already in place to account for it.

This is the second OOC thread, and the second adventure. We've already had something of a "shake down" in general, so it's only a matter of bringing the new people up to speed (and they can accelerate the process by looking through the first adventure on their own, as well as the first OOC thread).

I do want to reiterate my comment about actions here and now: you can tell from the Example of Play I posted that certain things I let pass with description, but major activities require die rolls, particularly when the time is short and the consequences are potentially grievous. One of the things we'll be working on is all of us getting used to what is what and how to handle it in the text-only format. It would be a lot easier to figure that in face-to-face tabletop play, but the tendency in text is to describe a long thing, all your actions, and that gets tricky when I'm not able to interrupt to ask for a die roll or something. But not EVERYTHING is going to call for dice; when there's no consequence to trying again, and there's no effective time limit, we can assume some things are just attempted until they succeed, if it's possible for them to succeed at all. This should have the net result of saving time.

Suffice to say, I imagine we ought to be prepared to edit ourselves, when necessary. I have learned that lesson myself in other RPs, and this should be no exception. We can work out things here or in PMs if there's a conflict, and then edit as need be.

Oh, and post length is: whatever's required for the moment. If it's action, for example, doesn't have to be long: describe what you're doing, and maybe the intent behind it, if you're planning something or setting something up. But I'd rather not deal with extraneous padding if we don't have to, that just slows things down.

Also: pick a color and font that's comparatively easy to read. That's just a request from a guy with old eyes.

Other than that, thread is now open. Have at thee.

I'd be more inclined to agree if everyone didn't decide to jump ship.

If I had decided to 'jump ship' I would have said something along the lines of 'I quit'.
I'm still in for this, however stress isn't exactly helping me at the moment.
So, please, be patient.

It's all right, Gaz. Your life has been troublesome of late, we're not judging.

Kite's into the story, is all, and wants to RP, as do we all. It's just difficult when we have two that are unmotivated (possibly busy), two that are very busy in RL, and Kite. Who may or may not be busy, but he's more raring to go than the other players.

Please don't feel pressured; although we're eager, we know RL comes first. And while I may move us along as a GM just so we can get a little sluggish motion going on the thread, you are 100% welcome to jump in at any time and wrest control of your character back from me in a high-tension struggle for... nah, I'll just turn it over. Further, if you read something I've done that seems out of character, let me know, and as GM, I'll revise it. That goes for anyone.

<hugs Gaz tight> I hope things smooth out for you soon, m'dear.

... What he said.

To be honest, I was on my way to this thread to say something like that, but when I saw MM had posted, it was obvious to me that he beat me to the punch.

I don't know what's going on in your RL, but it's obvious that it comes first.

I was just a bit frustrated that I'm the only frequent poster, despite the fact I don't have a computer of my own.

So, I'm sorry, 'n' stuff.

It's all good, babies.
I'm just sick of all this snow, it makes the simplest tasks (like feeding and watering the doggies or bringing in firewood) seem like nothing but a huge hassle. Plus household issues and family issues...let's just say, I'm living up to my screen name at the moment.

Anywho, I appreciate your understanding, boyos.

Woo! Finally, some BMR time. ^^

Hey doods, I'm living in Vernal, Utah now. A place in Utah's vast nowheresland.

Good news = I have a computer with internets.

Bad news = It has Vista and I won't be on for the next two weeks. I work an on-call job for an oil and gas company. I make HELLA money now.

Anyway, I'll get around to posting whenever I get the chance, if anyone bothers to post.

Hoorah for making money! On-call can be iffy, but then again, that's why a post-based RP site might be more useful than IM kind of stuff; you can pick up and go when you need to and all that'll happen is someone has to wait a bit longer for the next post. So, good on you!

Yeah, hope things go well! And I also hope we have some action soon. No pressure, fellow comrades, but I have a bunch of ideas yet to expose to y'all.

All right. I talked with Misha, and it seems she's unlikely to continue this particular RP. I told her the story of how I had imagined things going, the kind of finishing situation I had in mind. She approved, so I have no problem sharing; this was initially supposed to be a Cersei-specific adventure, after all, as you'll see.

So here's what we'll do.

I'll post the resolution to this adventure. Sorry, but without the primary motivator, it's not going to happen. So we'll wrap this up. And THEN, we'll see who wants to play a different adventure. Something a little more city oriented, now that I've given a taste of the countryside. again, more option for existing characters and new ones, as desired.

I'll post the wrap-up, give it a day or so for comments, and then assign character points. And then we can discuss what kind of thing we're interested in. I know Kite's likely to be in; Dready and Gaz, you two are also quite welcome, if you feel motivated.

I'm in. Also, I'd like to make an NPC suggestion. It came to mind, but I'm not too sure just how useful it'll be.

In any case, would it be cool if I post, the situation being right after the team made the report? Kohdeki wishes to sulk. ^^;

I'm honored by the attention my little game is generating; I have one person contacting me in PM, another here. Since Kite's in, and I want to keep an open space or two for existing players who decide they have the time, I'm going to cut it at the two people who have already asked at this point. Double-I, drop me a line and I'll give you my character basics, and you can float some ideas toward me. The other person interested is Omerta, which name always makes me think of the Mafia, but she's got a good start on a character concept.

Anyone else interested, there will be next time, I'm sure. It make take a while, but every adventure eventually ends. :p

Also? Flattered that people not involved in the game are paying attention.

I told Omerta she should try to join if she likes GRPs.

However, I'm not yet aquainted with Miss Ivy here, and seeing as her post in this thread is her first post on BMR, I'd like to see what kind of roleplaying skill she's packing.

;)

Well, I figure I'll get a feel for how Double-I operates when she gets around to PMing me. If the discussion doesn't go well, we'll have to talk.

However, I'm making an assumption that she read a little of the OOC thread, and one would hope a little of the RP. If she feels she can keep up, I'm willing to give her a listen for a bit.

Plus, I like her attitude! <snaps off a crisp salute>

-lazily salutes-

By the way, did you want a Kohdeki-related NPC idea?

So, how're the newbies' characters coming along at the moment?

Ivy Insane hasn't been back on since she first posted, so she may not have read my responses.

Omerta and I are corresponding slowly, in part because I have lots i'm trying to do, and when she does drop me a line, my posts back can be delayed. Like, at the time I write this, I don't think she's on, or she wasn't last I checked. So I gotta wait until she is.

Forgive my impatience (I took an energy drink), but could you respond to that PM?

^^;

Sorry.

When I'm running on an energy drink, I'm always thinking people are running at my speed.
