Campus had been all but empty come the first day of Spring Break. So Vanessa had no problem waiting in the main parking lot for her childhood chauffeur. The black rolls Royce turned onto campus grounds, stopping right in front it's intended target, Vanessa. David, a man in his late fifties exited the car, a welcoming smile on his face. "Dave.." Vanessa hugged the man tightly, always enjoying his presence.
"You haven't changed much" David chuckled, his love for the little girl, now grown woman still the same. Vanessa would always be a little girl to him, the little who he drove to school, camps and to the mall. "Are you ready?"
"Yes" She helped him place her things in the trunk, and soon, they were both on their way to the Vasseli estate.
Entering the familiar black gates, brought a sense of comfort, yet uncertainty. Vanessa stared out the glass windows of the car as it ascended the long drive way. The usual guards sitting on the lawn, under a tree, their make shift watch post. When the car came to a complete stop, Vanessa exited and before reaching the large mahogany front doors, it swung open, revealing little brother and sister.
"My God! How old are you guys now?" Vanessa's legs got tackled with hugs. She stopped hugging them both properly.
"We're five" Megan smiled.
"But I'm older still" Vitaly boasted
The twins, born too Victor Vasselli's one and only wife Margaret, were Vanessa's only siblings, and she loved them to death. They looked up to their elder sister, fully enjoying the love and attention she bestowed on them.
"I got you two gifts"
The twins both leapt into the air, joy overcoming them. The three walked into the mansion, their mother waiting in the hall, greeting Vanessa with a warm smile. "Its good to see you again" Margaret hugged her tightly. The two had never been best of friends, but they got along, for the sake of Victor, and the two kids.
"You too.." Vanessa gave her usual sweet smile. She had been the only mother figure Vanessa knew, yet she had never truly experienced the love and warmth she craved. Vanessa had been the result of an affair, a short fling her father dabbled in while on business in Venice. Abandoned at birth, by the only woman who would ever truly love her. That, however, had been terribly far from the truth.
Vanessa was never abandoned, instead taken from her mother's arms. It why Margaret never softened towards her, the elder woman could barely stomach her husband's indiscretions, but she knew it came with being the wife of a rich and powerful man. But when Victor learned of Vanessa's existence, he wanted her, and it infuriated Margaret. After retrieving her from Venice, Victor spared no expense, a nursery had been fully prepared, and two nannies on rotation. Vanessa was, and still is the Apple of the Victor's eye. Margaret never understood his love of her, yet she tried too, equating it to the love He had for the girl's mother. A woman whom she had never met, yet always remembered evrytime she saw Vanessa.
"Your father isn't here, he's out on business, but he should be back for dinner"
"Okay, well I'll go give these rascals their gifts and take a rest" She followed David as he carried the bags to her bedroom.
"Thank you" Vanessa unzipped the suitcase and rummaged through her things, Megan and Vitaly hovering over patiently.
"For youuuu"She grinned hanging Megan a jewelry making kit "And this is for you.." She passed Vitaly a mini remote control car. The kids lit up, thanking Vanessa from mars to the moon. Despite having everything they ever wanted, they were still very grateful for it all. In a flash they disappeared, eager to show off their new toys. This left Vanessa alone, she retrieved her phone, checking it for messages. "Zero.." No messages, especially from Brandon. Why would he message her, "Not like he's having fun. He went New York to compete" Vanessa opened their ongoing conversation and clicked the camera icon, she placed the up in the air, capturing her perfect smile, her bedroom on display in the background. Adding the caption "Home at last" she hit sent.
