Anna, Clara, and Caitlyn had been getting ready to sit down to lunch with the rest of the Sandalios when the news that Chris had been severely injured in her last match hit them. Whether their daughter hated them or not, Anna and Clara rushed off to see their baby, Caitlyn following right on their heels. “What’s going on? What’s wrong with her?” Anna was all in a panic as she burst into the tent, dark eyes welling with tears as she looked at Chris’ unconscious body. Caitlyn immediately noticed the blood slowly oozing out of her sister’s ears, her heart sinking because she knew that couldn’t be good.
“Mrs. Sandalio I presume? Your daughter has suffered severed trauma to her cranium and possibly her brain. Her skull is most certainly fractured….” The doctor paused for a moment, never liking to deliver such grave news. “There is a chance that when your daughter awakens from her coma, she might have brain damage or a c-spine injury that would impair her motor function… That blow would have killed a human.” The doctor glanced between his patient and her guardians nervously. He always hated this next part. “She signed a DNR; there is nothing we can do for her besides make her comfortable and hope she comes out of her coma soon.”
Anna looked at the doctor in complete and utter disbelief. Seventeen may be the age of consent around here, but what the hell did a seventeen year old know?! “I don’t care what she signed. If there’s anything you can do for her, I want it done. She’s young, she’s strong, she’ll heal.”
“Ma’am, I cannot in good conscience perform any extreme life saving measures on your daughter. I’m sorry but those are her wishes.”
Something inside of Anna snapped; before she knew what she was doing, she had closed the distance between them and stood toe to toe with the doctor, her beautiful face contorted into a mask of rage. This was her child! And she’d be damned if she was going to have some asshole in a white coat tell her what was going to happen with her kid. “’I’m sorry’?! Oh no, you’re not sorry.” Anna snarled, jabbing the doctor accusatorily in the chest. “You will be though if you do not do something. So don’t you dare give me anymore of your legal bullshit. GET IN THERE AND HELP MY KID!!!” Anna was roaring by the end of her threat, seething with absolute fury because of this insanity. Her daughter was dying and the best the doctor could do was say ‘I’m sorry’?! No, not good enough.
Anna had never scared anyone in her entire life, but today the doctor was intimidated enough to quickly nod and then turn tail and run back into the medical tent to work. “What?!” The wolf snapped as her siblings gawked at her.
“Just…you know…never seen you get mad before.”

When the Sandalios weren’t competing, they were all over at the medical tent offering support for Anna and Clara or trying to offer sweet words of encouragement to sensitive little Caitlyn…unfortunately there was no cheering the young girl up. This was her fault, she should’ve done something other than walk out on her sister or told the other girl to leave her alone. She knew that Chris was fragile, a hell of a lot more fragile than her big sister let on. Come on Chris wake up… The hours of the surgery seemed to pass by as slowly as days….though that was probably because there was only two doctors on staff as well as a handful of medics who had very little operating room experience so the surgery was taking longer than it should have. Finally it was over and they were allowed into the tent to see Chris. She looked so pale after the surgery…and so bald. Chris is going to have a fit when she wakes up.
The doctor was talking to her parents in hushed tones, typical adults not wanting the little kid to hear. But whatever, Caitlyn didn’t pay them any mind. Instead she just knelt down by her sister’s cot and stayed there, waiting for Chris to wake up like a puppy dog.

There weren’t many other competitors in the tent that night so Anna and Clara crammed themselves into an empty cot, not wanting to miss it if Chris woke up. That left Caitlyn to carefully arrange her lithe body in Chris’ bed. It was cold out here at night and the doctors had been worried about Chris’ body temperature dropping even after they had piled the blankets onto her. So Caitlyn solved that problem by snuggling up close to her sister just as they had always done when they were little.
