Peace had finally befallen the group. Civil bantering could be heard and occasional laughter from the table. The girls on the sofa had started lightly conversing with one another between blitzing off texts. So when the door opened to a new face, everyone’s attention was on them. Newcomers were few and far in between to this covert party, so a few people turned to their companions and began whispering; who had invited him, what did he do, how much money would he bet. Yet when revealed that Oliver and Zachary knew one another, the whispering wasn’t just about the new fellow.
Dru turned having heard the whispers, knowing what they elluded to and a rumbling chuckle bubbled up. Oliver spoke his mind and Dru quickly put an end to it seeing Zachary was followed in. Dru knew Steiger and could pacify the man with ease despite Oliver’s transgressions. This new fellow was uncharted territory and making wrongs right perhaps could not be as easily smoothed over. So his hand quickly covered Oliver’s mouth and he nodded a hello to Zachary before turning in his seat, with Oliver, to get a better look at the new fellow just as he spoke.
“Now, now boys that is no way to act in such a fine establishment. Let bygones be bygones for the sake of our company shall we?” he wave his hands in the air and briskly pushed Zack aside taking his seat. He waved over to Frederick, who promptly waved back, breaking the tension that had settled. Dru at that point let his hand fall from Oliver’s mouth and twisted back to the table encasing Oliver in his arms with one on each side so he could play cards with both hands. “Zachary fetch me a jin and tonic.” he ordered, waving Zack away not bothering to look. He did twist to look at Oliver though.
“Pardon Zack’s rudeness. He’s still rather peeved he lost his freedom just recently. Gambled his life away earning himself lifelong servitude.” He said to the pair though he was looking at Oliver. “Quite the getup you have there. Pick out by none other than your partner?” he asked and then feigned a gasped, “Now pardon my rudeness. I’m Aedus, Aedus Burns.”
“Drudwyn Lackovic.” he responded with a nod briefly glancing at Aedus Burns for but a moment before introducing Oliver, “This is my pet Oliver.”
“Pet?” he asked seeming surprised. “Oh! You must be THE Drudwyn I’ve heard stories about. Your reputation precedes you. I’m surprised you’d bring a product out, although I must admit you chose well. Clearly your training works wonders if you have him out and about. A slight attitude adjustment and he’d be perfect for the market.”
Dru laughed and reached out the arm closest to Aedus for a quick shake. “Thank you for the advice. I’m well aware and that’s something we’ve been working on adjusting.” After the brisk shake, Dru withdrew his hand and placed it back on Oliver’s leg. “What is it you do Aedus? I haven’t seen you here before so you must be an up incoming.”
Aedus noticed Dru’s hand wonder yet didn’t squak like some of the other would have. Rather he looked around the table, “I started into this ring of gentlemen by planning their trips, arranging transportation, mostly all covert things. I expanded my business into purchasing a small airline and then began dabbling in this and that. I haven’t delved deeply into any one thing other than transportation. Just sort of feeling the markets, seeing what there is.”
“Clearly you’re doing well.” Dru said taking note of Aedus’ attire in addition to him being in the private room. Before Aedus could respond, the fellow on the other side began asking him about his transportation arrangements. Dru took advantage of that moment leaning down to Oliver and whispering, “Keep yourself in check.” He squeezed Oliver’s leg lightly and then returned it to the table. “Would you like to play a hand? Give you something to do to keep your attention off of other things.” Dru asked suddenly looking down at Oliver ever so slightly motioned towards Zack as he moved back over towards them.
