(COSTUME)

To Astrid DuBois, having power of the elements was the greatest thing to ever have. Having power over fire meant never getting too cold or too hot. Having power over water meant never drowning, and when she was in the water, she was healed and strengthened, reenergized, like drinking a really good cup of coffee. Having control over air meant she could fly, and never have to worry about traffic. Having control over the Earth meant her plants never ever died on her.

Astrid was an 22 year old mutant, well, she was sure that was the name for those who had natural born super powers like her. She was exquisitely good at hiding her powers though, she had been taught how to control her powers by Professor X. She loved the man, he was so kind to her from Day 1, he took her away from the bully children in New Orleans, she had been abandoned in an cradle in front of the orphanage as a baby. After about 5 years, she had just been followed, her lunch got stolen by bullies. They followed her back to the orphanage, about to whale on her, when her powers suddenly activated. The wind began to howl. The ground began to rumble. It grew hot. Then it began to smell of rain. The bullies than ran off. Professor X found her hours later, crying and hiding, and he quite simply marched her over to the orphanage, and adopted her... The rest was history, he took her to his school, where she got the finest education offered to a child, and the best tutors to help her control her powers.

By day, she was a worker at a Star Bucks in one of New York's not so nice neighborhoods, by night she was Elementa, super heroine. She liked fighting crime, it gave her something to do since the cops didn't always know how to fight crime properly. She had just graduated college from Cornell, one of the most difficult schools to get into, but she got in full ride scholarship and everything. She majored in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

Right now, she was at work. She was secretly waiting for the handsome guy who always ordered coffee. The girls she worked with totally could tell she had eyes on him.

"Look, buddy, I love Lamborghinis as much as the next guy, but that doesn't mean you can just go take one whenever you want! There's rules! Nothing to say? Oh, right, your mouth is covered by webbing. Rain check on the banter?" The only response was angry, muffled shouts. A man, dressed in dark clothing, hung from a lamp post, surrounded in webbing, including his mouth being covered. Leaping from the top of the pole, a red and blue-spandexed man extended his arm, pressing the mechanism on his wrist to fire a stream of webbing, attaching to the train that passed overhead. He let the subway track pull him along, letting go and shooting another strand up to a building, momentum carrying him up in an arc, landing on the corner to overlook the city.

Spiderman grinned underneath his mask, taking a deep breath of the crisp morning air. Not much usually happened during the morning patrol, he was surprised to actually catch a car-jacker. Then again, that's why he did it, to stop people like that. Constant presence, prevention was always best. The public loved him, he was in a good period right now where people didn't hate him and the Bugle wasn't constantly declaring him a menace to society. Then again, that might be going out the window with the mysterious new hero that was taking the heart of the Big Apple, Elementa.

Either way, he needed to get to work pretty soon. He'd been at Verge Labs for a little over a year, and he loved it. Finally he was working with people who wanted to make a difference, do something good with their intelligence. Not only that, he was still doing journalism and photography on the side, freelancing. Put that alongside the fact that the public loved Spiderman, and things were coming up Peter.

Well, most things. He'd been pretty busy lately, and his romantic life had been on the back burner for...longer than he'd liked. Maybe that would change soon, at least he dreamed it would. Back in his streets, he headed to his usual coffee place for the morning cup. Not that it wasn't decent coffee, but there was a bigger reason he always came to this store, at this time. A smile crossed his face as he got in line, seeing that reason behind the counter, taking orders. "Hey, I have an out of the blue question. Do you happen to sell coffee here? No idea where I got that," he said with a smirk as he got up to the front. "The usual, please."

Astrid smiled when she saw Peter, every morning, he asked the same silly question, but it didn't bother her, there was something endearing about him, something childish and impish. Her smile could light up a whole room, there was something calm and pleasing about her presence, she was really popular with the customers. She replied,"Coming right up!" She got to work on his coffee, though she finally managed to get the guts to write her phone number on the thing that ringed the coffee cup to protect the hands in case of an accidental spill. She handed him his coffee, still smiling brightly, and she spoke the price of 2 dollars.

Right now, she was really thinking about what she'd be doing tonight, well, she did it every night, which was fighting crime. She knew she wasn't the only hero who was working the city, but she idly wondered if Spider Man was a mutant, like herself. After all, not many folk could jump and do all of the cool stuff he did. Well, the web maker was man made, she knew that much, but he had to be super smart. She wanted to date a guy who was as smart as her.

The goofy, joking side of him leaked into both his lives, whether it was exchanging banter with whichever Goblin was in right now, or asking a stupid question to try to make the cute Starbucks girl laugh. That smile was enough, she was gorgeous, and quite obviously out of his league. Either way, he was far too busy anyway. There wasn't much room left for the boyfriend hat, what with the scientist, photographer, and superhero ones taking up so much room on his head.

"Thanks," he said, returning the smile, paying for the coffee and leaving a couple extra as a tip. Giving her a nod, he took the cup and walked away, sipping carefully at the hot beverage. It was good, and she'd made it perfectly, like always. He tilted his head, noticing something on the cardboard ring that protected his hand from the heat. Shifting his grip, his eyes widened as he realized it was a phone number. Her phone number? A fake one? Either way, he looked back to her before leaving, cheerful grin across his face as he raised the cup and nodded. Whoever's number that was would be getting a call later. He headed out the door, destination: Verge Labratories. Time to change the world.

She smiled, thanking him and telling him to come back. She appreciated the tip, every bit helped. She whispered to her co worker,"Aye, you owe me two bucks, I put my number on his coffee ring!" Isabelle grunted, and passed Astrid the money from the wager. Astrid was in a very good mood today, she finally had the courage to give her number to the cute guy. As a side job, she tutored children in Math and Science, and they always paid well, though sometimes they did not pay her with money, but sometimes with well, thanks. Seeing them improve was reward enough, really.

Astrid was looking at her phone, waiting for a call or text from the cute guy, assuming he actually did look at the ring and didn't think it was a joke. Now all she had to do was robot her way through the day, catch a nap, shower, eat, then it was hero time. She loved using her powers, though she was very good at hiding them.

Hours passed, and Astrid sighed with relief, it was time to go home. She loved using her skills with science to improve the coffee flavor. It was all natural, of course. It took lots of experimenting, but she wanted to one day make a flavor that everybody liked, it would taste like anything that you wanted.

Peter's mind was preoccupied throughout the day. He'd had to redo one of the experiments they were working on because he'd stopped paying attention to it halfway through. As the machine whirred, he was staring off at the wall with a stupid grin, thinking of the girl at the coffee shop. It was hard to believe she'd given him her number like that, out of the blue. Persistence and bad jokes paid off, it seemed. His hypothesis had been correct.

This was the perfect job. He loved science, and they were working on great things here. Not only that, he was "contracted" to work on things for the amazing, friendly neighborhood Spiderman. His webbing material for his shooters, other tech he might use, Peter got to work on it here at the labs. The publicity of a Verge Labs employee working for Spiderman made it worth it to the management. No city emergencies seemed to happen throughout the day, and the scientists got to work through it in peace. Eventually it came to be the evening, and they closed down for the day. Peter said goodbye to the others, and headed out. Just time to quickly drop his stuff back at his apartment, then off for evening patrol.

A little while later Spiderman was swinging through the streets, taking an arc to launch himself up to a roof. Kneeling to overlook the street below, he reached to type into the special keypad he'd made for his phone, letting him use it in the outfit. He'd memorized the number from earlier, and now that it was quiet, he thought he'd try to give it a call. It started to ring, always a good sign.

Astrid had two cellphones. One was to call her normal friends, the other was her 'emergency' phone, or in case she got a call from a fellow mutant, or the big man himself, Professor X. She only ever gave out her mundane number, not the emergency number.

It paid to be very smart, to have had top ACT and SAT scores in all categories. More doors opened if one had such a brain like that. She needed not take the SAT, but she did it any way just to show off her intelligence. But she was also an inventor, looking for new ways to improve her costume. She was working on making the fabric resistant to the heat of molten rock, since she could make it through usage of pyrokinesis and geokinesis, though doing that tired her out, it was worth doing it since she could shape rock to her precise needs.

Astrid made it home, napped, ate, showed, and put on her costume. She had worn it once to a comic book convention, people there remarked how she looked like Cat Woman from The Dark Knight Rises. As soon as she left the house, she took to the air, literally, enjoying the beautiful feeling of flight, and her mundane phone rang. Unknown number, but the digits showed, so she knew the number had to be safe. Astrid spoke, in her home town of New Orleans accent, the Southerner girl accent,"Hello?" When she was fighting crime, she spoke like a Northerner, her voice was completely unrecognizable.

He couldn't help but smirk as the girl answered. Partly because he was glad that it was actually her number, also because he thought her accent was cute. "Hello? Hi, this is, uh, Peter. From earlier today, and yesterday, and the day before...you serve me coffee a lot, that's what I'm trying to say. How was your day?" he said, stumbling over his words. He'd stared down the Rhino and beat him, and talking to a cute girl over the phone still made him nervous.

Easy, Parker. Just pretend it's some criminal and be confident. No, that's weird. Don't pretend she's a criminal, just be confident. Yeah. Here goes. "So, I was wondering if you might be interested in going out sometime. We could get coffee and you wouldn't even have to serve it, or we could get dinner," he said, looking down to stare over the city as the second between his question and her answer seemed to take an eternity.

"Well, hello, Peter. My name's Astrid. I hail from New Orleans." Astrid replied, continuing her home accent. She was smirking, she could tell from his speech patterns he was quite nervous. She continued, after he finished speaking,"Getting dinner sounds mighty fine to me!"

A gust of wind blew right by him, though little did he know that was Astrid, though she was too far high up for him to see or hear her. She spoke again,"Well, what day and time sounds good to you?"

She was smiling as well, she was so pleased that the cutie had actually called her number. No, his name was not Cutie, his name was Peter.

The hero pumped his arm back in excitement; she'd said yes! "Awesome, that's awesome," he said happily, shifting a bit as the wind caused him to sway some. "Uh, Saturday sound all right? I can swing by around seven or so if that works out," he said, not able to help but smirk at his little pun. She wouldn't get it of course, it was just for him.

Beneath them, through the street he was looking at, several police cars suddenly drove by. Sirens going and lights flashing, clearly they were responding to something. Peter cursed under his breath, it seemed their call would be cut short.

"Well, I think Saturday at 7 o clock is a fine idea." Astrid replied, continuing the Southern lilt, knowing the lilt was quite charming, along with her looks, she actually got guys to do whatever she wanted, but now, her eyes were for Peter, and him only. Right now, her hair and eyes were white, but they turned pink when she used Air in conjunction with Fire. She heard the police sirens and saw the cop cars going mega fast, so this had to be something juicy, a robbery or a shooting, maybe.

After she was done in the night, she always went to a part of the city she called Underworld, because she had informants there that told her of the odder things that went on, like magic and the like, messes probably caused by mutants or mundanes that messed around in magic. But recently, she had been receiving some very disturbing reports of mutants and mundanes going missing.

She slowly spoke, and her tone was with genuine disappointment,"Sorry, I'll have to cut this call short... I'll see you in the morning at the usual time!" You could really hear the wink in her voice, almost like her beauty was standing in front of him, winking. She ended the call, stored away her phone, and turned on the heat, diving downwards, looking like a comet, or as she liked to say it, an avenging angel. She went down very fast, streaking past Peter's sight, though she didn't know it was him. When ever her fire burned really hot, it had a bluish color to it, as she was sure the blue part of a flame was the hottest part. She almost looked like she was using a Brave Bird Attack from the fourth generation of Pokémon, for the fire surrounding her was blue.

"Oh, great! Glad to hear it, I'm looking forward to it," he said, crouching to lean over the roof at the cars racing away. It must be something fairly big, for this many cars to be needed. Of course it had to happen now, and not, you know, when he wasn't asking out his crush. That was the curse of being a superhero though, and duty was calling.

About to end the call, she actually got to it first. Something must have come up. "Of course, see you then," he said with a smile, hanging up. The image of her in his head soon shot away as a streak of bluish-fire streamed in front of him, arcing after the cop cars. His eyes widened, surprised as he recognized who it was. The new sweetheart of the people, Elementa. "You're not beating me to this," he said, diving off the roof, firing a web to start swinging to follow the sirens.

Elementa was laughing with a New York accent, she still had the bluish fire around her, and she got quite the applause from some children who were walking home, they thought she looked very neat. Elementa loved it when people, especially children, applauded her. She heard faint gun shots, and she pushed herself to go even faster, gun shots meant death and dying, and her purpose was to minimize it.

She had recently been working on using the air, which carried sound waves, to improve her hearing, she wanted to improve her hearing, which would improve reaction times, which would allow her to respond faster to crimes.

Spiderman shot two web lines forward, as they attached to a wall he pulled hard, shooting him forward like a slingshot. Keeping up with fliers was never easy, especially ones that could zip through the air like a firey comet. Johnny Storm was usually able to beat him, and it seemed Elementa was just as fast.

The two finally came upon the scene, a bank robbery at the New York Bank and Trust. They had a large vault, an enticing target for criminals. They'd gone all out, a full team of armored mercs inside to try to take the loot. Peter held onto a wall above the bank, getting a feel for the situation while trying to make a plan.

There was a certain exhilaration that went along with not making plans, the feelings of the unknown always had a way of bringing her such delight, even though in most folks, it brought them fear, fear of the unknown.

Elementa was also working on a way to create mold, it required geokinesis and hydrokinesis, though it was much easier to sense mold and summon it through geokinesis. Right now, Elementa had stopped the flames, so she didn't look pink anymore. She had an odd shade of teal to her, a very light teal, since she was using Air to stay flying, and Water and Earth to create mold, she was going to wreck the electrical workings of the get away vehicle, if everything was all dirty and nasty, car wouldn't work. Whenever she was making mold, the air always had a peculiar smell to it.

The air also sounded like it was whispering, and the whispering was concentrated near the vehicle. One could almost see vapor go underneath the car, absorb into it. If they couldn't go anywhere, it'd make easy pickings for the cops. But even so, time to go and pick the baddies off one by one. She floated slowly, quietly, there was one bad guard outside of the bank. Quietly, she began to summon the Earth, more specifically vines... A faint snap was heard, loud enough for the guard to look around, but he was looking in the wrong place... By the time he looked back, there were many vines behind him, like she was using a Vine Whip attack from Pokémon... Speedily, they bound him good and proper.

As Peter started to crawl down the wall of the building, his nose started to pick up an odd smell. "The hell is that," he muttered, not able to tell, so he pushed it out of his mind. He continued around the side, trying to find a vent or something to crawl into to enter it stealthily. Causing any commotion would just exacerbate things, so this should be as quiet as possible. Being stealthy had its fun too, though nothing beat fighting off a whole group of goons, zipping between them while they couldn't land a single hit. Spidey-Sense for the win!

Spiderman stopped as his head poked around the side, giving a sigh. It seemed she'd beat him to it. One of the men was being attacked and bound by vines stretching out of the Earth, quickly tying him up. "Seriously? That's my thing. Maybe not with vines, but still," he said, shaking his head and continuing to a vent he spotted. He should really stop thinking that way, that's not what it was about. Great power means great responsibility, he would never forget that. It was just...New York finally wasn't declaring him a public menace, and now she was stealing his thunder. Maybe they could work together? That could be fun, he decided to try to get her attention after they handled the robbery. Carefully pulling it open, he webbed the vent lid to the wall, and slipped inside, carefully crawling into the interior of the bank.

Soon enough he was in the ducts above the main room, looking through a vent to get a look at them. Ah, his good buddy Tombstone seemed to be the one in charge, as he walked around spouting orders at the men in body armor. A large group of hostages were crouched off to the side, guarded by a few baddies. "All right, Peter, one at a time," he muttered under his breath, crawling through to get above one of them a little away from everyone else. In a moment, he had shot through, landing on the man and knocking his head to the ground, webbing him to the ground. Quickly he zipped up to the dark of the ceiling, looking around for the next target.

The get away vehicle was now officially wrecked, even the inside of the vehicle was covered in mold. She smirked, she had so over done it, but hey, better over do it to ensure that the baddies wouldn't get away. Now, for the real playtime as she decided to do what Spider Man had done, hide in a vent and look for an opening. She knew better than a direct assault, people would die. Astrid growled quietly once she had gotten to a good spot, having seen Spider Man web one of the men. He was so not going to steal her thunder. Then a little voice whispered in her head,"Well, that's what you're doing to him, isn't it?" She calmed down, realizing the whole vent had gotten very warm. She was pleased the room didn't get warm, a place getting warm was a dead giveaway that she was there. She saw that there were two guards left that were near the hostages. She quietly summoned some vines, again, a quiet snap was heard, blessedly covered up by one of the hostages coughing, and she used the tips to tap them on the back. They turned, but saw nothing. She did it again, and they turned once again, and they still saw nothing. Little by little, she had been working the vines up their legs moving it up to properly bind them. She tapped them once again, and she spoke,"Boo!" They couldn't scream, their mouths were covered by the vines.

Two quick shots of web covered the face and mouth of a guard, and in a few seconds, Spiderman had knocked him out. Another one down, just a few more. He zipped back to the ceiling before his gaze caught the hostages again, seeing the guards over there being knocked out, by the same vines he'd seen outside. She was already in here? Gah! He couldn't even have this? Again he had to force himself to calm, to think that this wasn't about that. As long as the hostages were safe, that was fine. They were making good progress of the baddies inside too, working in sync even though they weren't partners, knocking them out when the others couldn't see.

Their luck would eventually run out, though. "Okay, gents, round 'em up and let's move!" Tombstone shouted, turning to head towards the hostages before he saw that his mean were tied up in vines. "The fuck! We got company, boys," he said, pulling out a machine gun and looking around, the few that were left following in suit with their weapons. "Goodie. Well, we've got one more silent attack, better make it count," he said, zipping to the ceiling above the group. Waiting for the right moment, he dropped onto one, knocking him out before leaping to another. "Tomby! Long time no see, how are the pebbles? That's what I call your kids. You know, because you're made of rock," he said, messing with the head baddy while he fought another henchman.

Sadly, their luck of being unnoticed ran out, as eventually the room was entered by this Tombstone as the remaining henchman... Gods, Magneto would be sooooo useful right now, he'd be able to control the metal in the bullets... Once again, the air began to get the strange smell as she watched Spider Man take out one of the bad guys... Suddenly, the insides of the guns would be moldy. Secretly, she was hoping she'd make penicillin, a stronger version than what was out now, to help combat sickness, but no luck yet. Then, the room grew hot, very, very hot. a ring of fire surrounded the last two henchmen. One tried to escape, but the flames leapt high, preventing them from escape. Elementa was around, but hidden, unseen.

Spiderman did his usual acrobatic-style of combat with the goons, Spider-Sense helping him dodge their fire as he danced around, knocking them out and webbing them up to keep them held. He slowly started to sweat under his costume, the temperature rising fast in the bank. A small ring of flames erupting around the two henchmen to his right, trapping them within. "Right on cue, of course," he said, not able to help it as he stood. Tombstone was the only one left, lifting a handgun to fire at Spiderman. Trying to shoot, the trigger was hard to pull, almost like it was meeting resistance from something. "What the hell?" he shouted, throwing the gun aside to run and try to punch Peter. "Has this ever worked out for you, Tomby?" he said, zipping up with a web to dodge, then twisting in the air to cover his feet with webbing. "So, you're basically beat, maybe we just call it now, rather than do this whole song and dance?" he said, just out of reach of the man's swinging fists.

Elementa began to work on freeing the hostages, since a great deal of them were bound, tied up. She actually went out in the open to do it, and she began burning off the ropes that bound them, though she was careful to lower the heat so they wouldn't get burned. All the folks would feel was a gentle tickling sensation, like a Flame Freezing Charm in Harry Potter, which had been mentioned in Prisoner of Azkaban, well, the book, anyway.

She got quite a few cheers from the people, they loved her a lot more now. Though she spoke,"The credit does not entirely belong to me. Go cheer the original hero as well, that is only fair and just." Her hair and eyes were bright red now, as she was using fire to free them. Even though it was her style to revel in the praise of the people, her little rumination earlier made her act nice for once.

This would totally bring front page stories. Headlines would probably be SPIDER MAN AND ELEMENTA TEAM UP TO FIGHT CRIME! Well, this was so unintentional, but it turned out to be for the benefit of everybody except for the bad guys.

A few moments later, Tombstone was webbed to the ground, several layers deep, of course. You had to take precautions with someone that was basically made of stone and had enhanced strength. "And boom goes the dynamite," he said, stepping away from the incapacitated bad guys to hurry over to the hostages. He saw they were now free, and a woman in a black costume was standing near them, bright red eyes shining through the holes in a face mask, long hair the same color. "It's safe now, everyone, head outside and the police can help you," he said, waving them to the front doors.

He walked closer to the woman, giving a nod and extending his hand. "Hey, thanks for helping. You're doing good, the people seem to love you. Take it from me though, one bad headline and they'll turn on you. I'm used to it though, JJ's had my number for all these years."

Astrid took careful measure to make sure none of them had something nasty attached to them, like a bomb or something of the sort, one could never be too sure. She stood up once the hostages scurried off to the police, though she kept the fire going around the crooks that were in the flame circle, she lowered the flames once the cops got close. She turned to Spider Man, and spoke in her very convincing New York accent,"I am repaying the kindness that was done to me when I was young. I believe the phrase is 'paying it forward'." What she didn't mention was that she recorded everything she did, that way she could prove herself innocent in case the occasion ever arose... And she didn't want to ever forget anything. Professor X had told her that if she ever had the misfortune of having to fight a mutant, it was always important to note their strengths and weaknesses in case she ever came up against them again. The red drained from her hair and eyes, and turned white, she floated a few inches off of the ground. She extended her hand as well, not wanting to seem rude. A faint white X shimmed into existence on the front of her suit, it only appeared when she was using Air, and the X marked her as one of the X Men.

"Well, glad to see it," he said, shaking her hand as she put it into his, watching as she started to move up slowly. Always in a hurry to get away, it seemed. It was funny, that neither of them realized they'd been talking to each other on the phone about a half hour ago, him asking her out. Both of them talked differently, her voice in a different accent, his deeper, to hide their identities. Now they were just fellow heroes, stealing each other's thunder. "We work pretty well together, any chance of a team up again?" he asked, smiling under the mask. It was hard because she too had a mask on, but she seemed pretty under it. Astrid was cuter though, definitely.

Astrid shook his hand, and spoke,"Depends on what you wish for us to work together on. Some things I prefer to do alone, so I can practice my other abilities. Other times, I definitely need help on, like this occasion right here." She spoke,"I don't trust the newspapers. We only know what they tell us, and for all we know, they could be telling us lies about things. The only way to know truth is if you see and hear it for yourself."

Her 'emergency phone' began to ring. She sighed, and answered it,"Yes, Dauntless, what is it?" Little did she realize, the phone was on speaker, so Spider Man could also hear what was going on. Dauntless answered, the voice was definitely male, and he sounded very distressed,"Sister Abnegation disappeared earlier. Sisters Candor and Erudite are looking for her. Brother Amity is with me. We need your help to find her." She answered,"Well, do you know where she was last so that way I can have an idea to where to start looking?" Dauntless continued,"She was last seen in Underworld with her boyfriend Hex, they were investigating something that I know not of." She spoke,"Well, I'll transmit this information to Professor X, hopefully he can track her with Cerebro." One could hear a clear sigh of relief from Dauntless, and he spoke,"I appreciate the assistance. The disappearance of mundanes and mutants is getting disturbing." He ended the call.

She sighed, she thought it was pathetic, how the brothers and sisters had named themselves after the five factions in the Divergent series, but their powers were odd. If one was in close proximity to Dauntless, they felt very brave, they sort of became reckless, really. If one stood close to Candor, they were compelled to tell the truth, to do the right things. If one stood close to Erudite, their intelligence was increased. In fact, Erudite had been working on a way to cure mental disabilities, for it seemed if the mentally disabled stood close to her, their disabilities seem to go away. If one stood close to Amity, they felt compelled to seek a peaceful, non violent way to do things. If one stood close to Abnegation, they felt overwhelmingly compelled to be selfless, to put themselves in danger before letting somebody else endanger themselves.
