The others were gone; Mariah was alone. She knew that she had to find the other two fast. Pushing herself away from the window, she crawled back to the stairs and climbed her way back to the 2nd floor. Looking over the balcony she notices that all of the infected had disappeared. “Oh shit.” She whispers. They must have scattered themselves throughout the building; this meant that she had to be extra careful. She dropped into a crouch and headed through the 2nd floor doors and up to the 3rd floor through the bathroom. Once on the 3rd floor she stood up and walked in the narrow hallway where she took the second door on the right and climbed the stairs.
Luckily, the stairway was somewhat intact up until the 6th floor. Mariah did have to climb over and around some of the collapsed stairs, but it wasn’t too hard. The 6th floor was too quiet. Caitlyn was supposed to be up here, but where was she? Something felt wrong. A loud croak emitted from the other side of the room. Mariah immediately kneeled down; she had to be careful. She crawled inside a cubicle and placed her back against the wall; she silently listened. The sound of something softly thudding to the ground reverberated off the walls. “Caitlyn?” she says in a hushed tone.
“Hello? Is someone there?” comes a faint whisper. A female with short brown hair dressed in a Guardians uniform slowly stands up. An old metal pipe is resting at her side; blood caked and dripping around the end. Sweat dripped off the end of her nose and onto her open white shirt.
Mariah stands up, revealing her hiding spot. “It’s Mariah. Some infected are roaming around the building.” She looks at the blood and dirt covered pipe, “But I guess you don’t need me to tell you that. Anyway, I came up here to get you and Leonard. By the way, are you alright?”
The young woman looks over at her, “I’m alright. Where’s everybody else?”
“They went to go get Desmond. Sarah and Steven are hurt real bad, they needed fast medical attention.” Mariah could see that Caitlyn was shocked and most likely wanting to know more. “I’ll tell you more about it later, first we need to get Leonard. Last time I saw him I knocked him out and he was passed out on the floor.”
Caitlyn’s mouth dropped open. “But… Are you sure? I mean. A bloater just ran through here.” Realization dawned on her face, “We need to get up there. Now!”
